So much has changed.  The waitress - herself inattentive and uncaring - based it on the fact that there was a new chef.  That would explain why the turkey burger - now seemingly brimming with bread crumbs where there used to be meat - was first burnt and then undercooked, and the chips a shadow of their former selves, but not why a request to have mayo on your burger adds 50 cents to the bill.  What used to be a nice local place to get a meal is now just a a place where you wonder why you came.

Was there this evening with some friends.  I had been there a couple of times previously and honestly sorta had better times then.  This evening the place was very cold.  I and a friend ordered soup.  Which wad quite good.  Our waiter however was not.  He at the beginning he was constantly bugging as to what we wanted to eat and drink.  He was also paying attention to another table as in possible exchanging of texts.  All i know is that he definently sat down with them.  I got bangers and mash.  The mash was better then the bangers, which seemed to be ordinary breakfast sausage.  The irish coffee was good, if not a little strong.  Was served in a wine glass.  Also waiter brought out checks before we ordered dessert.  Or even had a chance to.

This place is average and would be a solid three- star except for the fact that both the food and service are inconsistent.  I have been to SJG on good days and ordered the right thing and been happy with it overall.  It gets a good local crowd for Maplewood, and I think it does well mostly because of the lack of other good pubs in the area.  I will definitely go to SJG if someone else picks it as a meeting place, but personally I'd drive a bit further to find better when I'm in the mood for a bar  and pub food.

Been stopping by the past two years, this spot is where I go when I'm in the area with friends. They have a good beer selection on tap (and in bottles), and the pub food that I've tried has not disappointed me yet. The only thing is a preference thing - if you don't mind a crowded bar and/or being shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers, then you'll be fine. If not, you will be hyperventilating and may possibly have a panic attack. Very crowded at times! However, there are tables on the one side of the place - dining area - where you can sit if there are available seats. Go and have a good time.

    Staff was friendly and attentive.

Food was typical bar food. Didn't expect to be impressed and wasn't.

Beer menu was limited but beers were inexpensive.

Place got busy around dinner time. Really the only place like it in the area, so if you're looking to grab a cheap beer and some chicken fingers, go here.

Fantastic local bar.  Few places balance the stroller crowd, the sports fans and the beer and a shot types better.  Way better than average pub food is buoyed by a homey ambiance and a great staff.  Nothing beats the sight of that fireplace on a cold night.

Don't believe the haters.  Nerds will always find something to complain about.

St James Gate is one of my favorite spots to go when I come home to visit my parents... Whether your in the mood for a drink at the bar or eating at the tables , its the place to go! The bartenders their are hilarious and always want to make sure you have a smileon your face!  After being stuck at my parents with no power for 10 days during the storm the Gate was the only place to go where all the staff was still smiling and welcoming, even though they prolly had no power at home they still came to work to make sure  the community was taken care of. I don't know how anyone could have a bad experience their!

The beers might have tasted better if the bartender wasn't making loud comments about my gay friend and pretending he didn't want us to hear them.

Next time I want a drink after a night at SOPAC I'll take my business somewhere else.

Ok so last night I was assaulted here by the bartender, who was drunk on the job.  I asked him for a drink and he refused to serve me so I ask why.  He says to me, "What are you some kind of faggot?"  So as a proud gay man I said to this, "Yes what of it?"  He tells me to leave but he won't let me get my coat.  He spits on my face then punches me.  So I give up on the coat and head outside, where he follows me and pushes my friends out of the way and hits me again, knocking me over.  He (Jimmy Meade) then kicks me in the head.  This guy has a problem and it seems like a simple question can set him off.  He's the owner's son soooo l doubt he will be fired.  Never had a problem before but I suppose Notre Dame's loss is what sparked his unprovoked attack.

St. James Gate is more of a 3.5 star kind of place and would be a solid 4-stars if they could pick up their table service and beer offerings a slight bit.  I have rounded up to 4 stars for the review because it is charming and a great local spot.

The bad: the (table) service is usually pretty clueless. The young waitstaff are friendly enough but service can be slow and there should be a little more personality.  On the other hand, we have found the bar service to be top notch. Bartenders who remember your drink and give you just enough attention without being overbearing. Also, the beer list needs some life to be breathed into it ...  Being a local, Irish pub, it would be unfair to expect The Gate to bring a 5-page long menu of rare Belgians and American craft beers... but the list is limited. They do pour a nice Guinness (and, usually, properly) and have a few rotating drafts.

The good: This is classic pub fare done well.  The food is perfect for a quick bite, a hearty and affordable dinner, or a casual lunch with the family.  Perhaps the menu could be more inventive, but then The Gate wouldn't be what it is, and I'd much rather have a place that does what it does well than a place that tries too hard (if that makes any sense).  I think the decor is charming, from the beautiful facade to the cozy seating around the fireplace. It is open late and airs Premiership games on the weekend  (late mornings).

    Food:
It's alright, nothing spectacular. If I'm here earlier than 10 and hungry, I'll eat, but otherwise I wouldn't come here for only the food.

    Bar:
This is the place my friends and I like to meet up for late-night drinks so that's why my rating is 4 stars. Monday through Wednesday is easy to grab a table with friends and talk. Their mixed drinks are solid. On Tuesdays (It's Tuesdays, right? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.) everything on tap is half price for a total of $3. I'm not really a beer drinker so I like that they have Magner's Irish Cider and I can partake in $3 drinks with everyone else. Because of this, the Tuesday night crowd is livelier than expected. Speaking of the crowd, it's mostly people in their mid-twenties and older. We're usually among the youngest patrons and keep to ourselves. They have a dartboard in the back if you're into that. There are also a few televisions set up by the bar if you want to watch sports.

Parking is plentiful and easy to find. It's located in downtown Maplewood which gives me a pleasant small-town feeling (for some reason this pleasant small-town feeling makes me feel kind of guilty when I'm stumbling out of the bar at 2 am).

This is a great local spot. The staff is friendly and familiar and always make you feel welcome. The food is decent (mashed potatoes are a good choice) and the drinks are on point. They have a good beer selection as well as a full bar. They are also one of the few places that stay open until 2 as they claim. This makes it a great spot for people like me who sometimes work until midnight. I can go unwind and not feel like they're trying to kick me out.

Get to know Jimmy and you won't want to go anywhere else.

I really like the ambience of this place. It has an authentic Irish pub feel to it. Great selection of beers. The burgers are okay and the hand cut chips are excellent but some of the non-traditional Irish food is questionable. The mac and cheese was identical to Kraft easy mac and the thin cut fries could have just as easily come from McDonald's. I'd say to steer clear of the non-traditional Irish menu items and play it safe to ensure a positive experience.

Brunch is excellent and I still go to the Gate for this purpose.  Dinners are not bad... but there's better to be had in Maplewood.  As far as the bar goes, it's WAY too child friendly - they've really jumped the shark on this one - and for me, that just flat out ruins the experience.

Its a very popular place, so in all fairness I may be missing something here - but for me, the Gate is just not a worthwhile experience except for the brunch menu.

If you like the food here, youd probably eat anything with fat and salt.  crappy taste is a prerequisite for dining here.  I've given this place so many chances, i can't believe i even agreed to go here last weekend.  a rat (not a mouse) jumped out from under the table as soon as we sat down.  No need to go in to details about the food: it all sucks.  The bartenders are mostly nice, except for tom, he's worthless, as for the table servers, hit or miss.  how about the owners? the young guy is fine, his father is someone i'd never want to give my money to.  half the beers are skunked, and the crowd is mostly underage losers and divorced depressed wannabe cougars and horny upper-middle class deebs.  maplewood village is worse off for this place, and check out my review history, i don't go on yelp to write a 1-star for nothin.

Stay away.  Decided to come here tonight (Monday, so somewhat quiet) based on someone's rave recommendation.  Really not worth it.

My date ordered the Guiness Irish stew and I ordered the St. James burger.  The stew came out tepid, as if they did not nuke it long enough and was completely absent of beef.  Keep in mind that it is listed on the menu as containing "Hearty beef cubes." Not so and we sent it back.   Called the waiter over and he just did not give a ****.  His only excuse was that it was late (about 9pm) and they must have run out of stew.  At least he took it off the bill.

I ordered my burger medium and it came out harder than the puck of the Devils/Rangers game that was on the tv and the fries were not freshly made.  The waiter did not even attempt to make anything right.

Irish pubs are a dime a dozen.  Don't bother wasting your money here.

Outstanding pub. Great place to take your family or just go to the bar to watch a game. Great atmosphere and staff. I highly recommend it,

Bad service and overpriced food-most of which isn't prepared in house. My friend ordered the veggie burger and I noticed it was the Dr Prager's brand I buy at the supermarket! After being served a glass of wine I noticed there was cork floating in it and the bartender told me that "that's just what happens." Also, on another occasion I saw a cockroach crawling on the wall near the kitchen. Spend your money elsewhere!

A very strong experience. Very typical as Irish Pubs go, but without some of the downfalls. Not too dark or divey or too noisy (although we were there on a Tuesday night so I'm sure it could get a bit more lively later in the week). The ambiance is just right. The service was decent and the food was very strong. They have a nice menu with a balance of your different pub-fares without trying to be too pretentious. Located in a perfect spot right in downtown Maplewood. My group ordered the stew, irish breakfast, a burger and a tuna melt and all were done very well and very tasty. No one had anything negative to say in any regards. Put it all together and that equals the fact that we'll be back again.

An intimate Irish Pub that is both welcoming and fun. It is located in a very quaint and cute (yeah I had to use that word) downtown Maplewood. Who would have thunk. Plenty of parking in lots all over. From the outside it can pass as a legitimate Irish Pub with the design and signage. Inside the place it can be described as dark and oak-y. Wood tables, bar and everything else. Very few lights except from the sun outside. It makes it the perfect place to hide from everyday crap and sulk your sorrows in a pint of Guinness that isn't quite the perfect pour but a valiant effort nonetheless. There menu is comprised of the usual pub food. Nothing too modern or out of the ordinary. Their burgers seem to be a big draw so I choose the Dublin Burger which was quite tasty. A little over cooked but with fresh blue cheese crumbled on top but it did satisfy my hunger. It did come with scrawny fries but if you want to splurge, you can order for extra $ their potato chips (steak fries). Their prices are reasonable with a Guinness going for over $5. Even though there were a few people inside it was quite quiet which was refreshing. The bartender was friendly but did go MIA for a bit when it came time for a refill. Overall a good experience.

Came here after a night at Paper Mill Playhouse.  Typical Irish pub feel but they do it well.  Had the corned beef sandwich and it was one of the better I've had.

Plus, you have to love a place that has Magners on tap so I can order a Black Velvet (half Guinness, half cider).

Service was friendly and prompt.  For a Friday night, the place wasn't too crowded, but enough to have a good time.

    More like a 4.5

    Food:
No reservations, but worth the wait. The burgers are good, their bread is better and best of all are the mussels. Lively crowd for dinner

    Bar:
Good place for catching up with an old friend. Not a dancing environment.  Drinks are decent priced. intimate crowd so you can make friends with the neighbors, but you probably won't. Very post college crowd, with some older guys there.

The Irish did things right when they invented Shepard's Pie and this place makes it well. The flavorful dish (beef and veggie mixture topped with mashed potatoes) came out piping hot and was hearty and filling. A good dish for a cold day.

The food was good, but the service was not. I was in the company of some cheesy men, but our waitress was definitely not in the mood for any fun. She was abrupt, not friendly and almost rude.

The crowd here is a huge mix of everything but the place is pretty popular, even on a cold, Tuesday night.

You gotta love a place that lists a pint of Guinness as an appetizer. Veeeery clever, St. James's Gate. And I got a long sleeve shirt from them at a street fair that pretty darn comfy.

The crowd is a little schizophrenic. One part families with little kids for the dinner, two parts middle-aged drinkers watching sports at the bar, and a growing contingency of drunk-off-their-asses unemployed college graduates who have boomeranged their way back home.

The food is fair. The cocktails are pretty crappy, but I guess it's your bad for ordering a gimlet at an Irish pub.

1st. Even though my palate doesn't really favor beer, all in all an exceptional selection on tap. Come here before 10/11 pm before the kitchen closes and get a chance to taste easily one of the best burgers in the area with seasoned steak fries to match. If I like it so much, why the 3 stars? Truth, I've had better burgers and there's something about manhood that forces us to hold the burger with a certain amount of reverence. I couldn't, with all integrity rate this place any higher, lest I find myself trespassing the unwritten bylaw. Although -the ambiance is unexpectedly rustic and holds a certain amount of charm on it's own -solid wood, fireplaces, & nice large window seats can make for a pleasant outing with you and yours

Great burgers and wings. Best pub food in the M/SO area... perfect place to grab a beer(s) with a couple friends.  Always have at least a couple of screens going, so it is a great place to go with the family or the kid to watch a game as well.

The food is good here, particularly the shepherd's pie which is fantastic. The burgers are pretty good as well. There can be long waits for a table on weekend nights and the bar is not very large so there is not really anywhere to wait. The service is usually pretty slow.

The beer selection is good, but they serve their "pints" in 14 oz glasses. Overall St James' Gate is a decent place but not somewhere to go out of your way for.

It's the only game in town, so it coasts (in my opinion). Food is poor, beer selection is limited, music is very bad.

I'd pretty much have to  agree with all the ~meh~ reviews here. The place is inconsistent at best, annoying and overpriced at worst. The good bartender really is great though and will make your drink just how you like it.
The burgers are ok, the shepherd's pie is okay, nothing really to write home about. One of the things I dislike about the place is the people. It seems like some of the most self-involved asshats come here on a regular basis and are just very demanding and annoying.

Typical Irish pub with basic menu. Food is inconsistent. Bar service could be better, depending on who is behind the bar. Bartender A keeps the Guinness flowing, while if Bartender B is working, you have to ask for every beer.

Note: Pub's "irish breakfast" served with Scrambled eggs, However the correct Irish breakfast is served with Fried Egg - enough said. p.s. the pub does not fry eggs on request.

    Many locals hang out there.

Friday is Raw Bar Day (oysters, shrimp cocktail and clams) - so far that has been a hit with me. Seafood is fresh because it comes for the seafood market next door.

    Bathroom is clean.

Wait staff not highly intelligent. They do not know the menu or if you ask what type of vodka, tequila or etc is served, they do not know and does not make the effort to find out.

Summary: ok to go to if meeting friends or hanging with family. Don't expect anything spectacular.

A lot of people I know are regulars here and all have only great things to say.  I have to join in that sentiment.  I was there on a Sunday night and the place was packed (we had to wait about 20 min to sit down) but it was worth the wait (and we got a great table next to a wood burning fireplace).  I ordered a turkey burger and no joke it was the best one I've ever had (and I've had many)  Often the turkey burgers are rubbery and the taste comes just from the condiments - here, the burger itself was delicious!  And, substituting a salad with balasamic dressing instead of fries was no problem (and the salad was delicious and topped with a pile of goat cheese)  Coffee was terrific, as was the cheesecake that I tasted.  Everyone else at my table loved their food and I was really very impressed.  The bar area tends to get really crowded, but people who go here don't seem to have any complaints about it - I would recommend the place for the food especially.
