If you're like me and your guilty pleasure is late night Chinese take out, it really doesn't get any better than Foo Hing, my favorite place to go for late night deliciously dirty Chinese take out food.
I lived in West Orange, NJ for work during the summer of 2009, and I found this place randomly on Google maps. I worked late Monday through Saturday, and this was the only place that I could show up to around 10-11PM and be welcomed with open arms. I'm pretty sure my first time there, I called beforehand to make sure they were open, and they actually reopened so that we could come and get food (WHAT SERVICE!).
So this place is very much a hole-in-the-wall joint, family-owned and everyone works there day in and day out. If I'm not mistaken, I think they family actually lives upstairs from the kitchen that is downstairs.
I am a huge fan of all their dishes that come with rice and spicy, stir-fried chicken or shrimp. Their pan-fried noodles are also all really good, and for the prices that they charge, the amount of food is super satisfying. We came here late every Saturday night, and we got to know the owners really well and they gave us free 2-liter bottles of soda and complimentary sliced watermelons (they treat their customers super well).
This place was my first real experience with Chinese take out, and I grew up jealous of all the people on TV who would eat greasy, smelly Chinese food out of cardboard take out boxes late at night. Now I know the beauty of Chinese take out, and I have yet to find something like that on the west coast (I may consider moving back east just for all the great late night Chinese take out food).
I guess the main thing to take from this is, if you're as passionate about late night Chinese take out food as I am, you must try this place.
If the owners of Foo Hing read this, could you please send some of your food over to California? Or just move over here? I miss you guys!
