Staropolska has an absolutely beautiful, cozy, fun interior. Very clean but very traditional. This was my first experience at a polish restaurant and I thought it was very reasonably priced. The service as well, was quite good.
We started with the zucchini pancakes - they were ok, but started getting a little heavy and filling at the end.
I ordered two different kinds of beer and they were out of both, but recommended an alternative that turned out to be quite good.
I had the sautéed, breaded pork chop with mushrooms - it was pretty good - though I don't eat a lot of meat and the old world style of food harkened back to a by-gone era.
My girlfriend ordered the pork tenderloin, but they brought her something else - when we alerted them to the mistake, they took care of the problem right away, even giving her a free desert.
I found the restaurant to be acceptable - a little heavy from a food standpoint, but with good service and reasonable prices.
I've been there twice and I really was not impressed. One thing's for sure - the interior looks magnificent. Captures the Polish rural charm in its decor, not plebeian though, but tasteful. That's about where the good ends.
Service... Mehh. I've experienced better. One of the waitresses, an older Polish lady, blonde, wearing glasses... Really snotty, not to say b****y. Gotta work those attitude problems out, otherwise you won't be making good tips, at least not off of me. Oh, and Chardonnay is supposed to be served chilled in wine glasses, not champagne flutes... Just a tip. Another waitress, much younger, had barely any knowledge of the menu whatsoever. Could not answer a single question adequately, but at least she was friendly and polite.
Food... Really could do better. Much much better. I was looking forward to some traditional Polish home cooking. What I had received, however, was a plate full of "microwaveables". The pierogis were exactly the kind you can buy frozen in packs at a supermarket. How about serving some fresh homemade pierogis you can pride yourself in? Shouldn't have to resort to Alexandra's pierogis purchased in bulk... The fish had so many bones I choked on almost every bite and had to pull them out individually. Coffee was absolutely disgusting. Whoever runs the kitchen is resorting to cheap and effortless methods, where quantity plays the lead role, not quality, where nothing is made fresh, but frozen and microwaveable. And on top of it all - wayyy overpriced! I didn't really know what I was paying for!
If I'll ever feel like treating a friend to some Polish cuisine again, I think I'll resort to cooking a meal from scratch myself. Even though I'm no chef, I think I could do a much better job than whoever runs this place.
