Pretty decent. Waitress was super nice. Sushi was ok. I got the highland park roll, alaskan roll, and california roll. Sake was on point... wasabi was super hot and spicy. I think the size of this place is just right. Its small and they look busy all the time. It is nothing special, there are better sushi places chicagoland area.
Review Source:Great sushi? The best! Â (and I worked at another sushi place for 4 years!) Â Kushi yaki? Excellent! Â But one huge reason why I love Sushi Kushi? Â Real, authentic, Japanese home cooking, and great prices too! Â Delicious yaki soba (pan friend noodles), don buri (rice bowl meals), and even oni giri (rice balls)! Â Japan doesn't live on sushi, they have other great food too, I'm so glad to have a place to get it!
Staff is always super friendly. Â They are always really busy, and they have to work in a tight space, yet always fast and friendly! Â
Just a couple tips:
- PLEASE do not ask for Chinese food here..... or any Japanese restaurant for that matter. Â There is no beef with broccoli, egg rolls, or sweet and sour chicken. Â Scoot yourself to Panda Express for that.
- DO NOT stick your chopsticks in your food and leave them sitting up straight. Â It's considered bad luck (like incense sticks at a funeral.)
- The soda with the marble is called Ramune. Â It's not 'Japanese Sprite'. It tastes like bubblegum, nothing like Sprite.
- Tell the staff how much you like everything! Â It's a really tough neighborhood to cater to, show them some love!
Came here for ramen specifically while were in the area for the Highwood Pumpin Fest. Â I'm not sure about the sushi because we only ordered ramen, but for ramen this place is legit. Â The boy had their Taiwanese style ramen which has ground pork instead of the sliced pork, and also adds a little spicy kick to the broth. Â He really liked it and slurped it all up. Â I thought it was a little more oily for my taste, but I was super pleased with my regular ramen. Â We're from LA and we've both had ramen in Japan, so our standards are pretty high. Â This was really close to the real thing. Â The noodles had a good bite to it, and the serving size was good (I was super full and didn't have room for the delicious looking green tea ice cream afterward). Â Anyway, if you're looking for real Japanese tonkatsu ramen, make the drive out here and you will leave fat and happy :). I really wish there was a place like this in downtown Chicago!
Review Source:After sweating it out for a little while at the Taste of Highland Park, we decided a nice, air conditioned restaurant is where we wanted to eat dinner. Â We had originally decided on Tamales, but as we walked there, the unassuming sushi place next door that we'd never tried, caught my eye and I said, "let's try here instead."
My first impression of the restaurant is that they had a lot of staff on for the night. Â At least three sushi chefs, plus a handful of servers. Â The restaurant isn't that large. Â
The menu was pretty standard, a lot of their specialty maki consisted of something that had eel and/or eel sauce. Â We ordered three rolls, the Highland Park, the Highlander, and I think it was the Red Dragon (the menu that is shown online is not the same as the menu in the restaurant.) Â We also ordered four pieces of nigiri.
The flavors on the rolls were good, and the filling-to-rice ratio was better than some other places we've tried. Â One thing I cannot stand is if there is too much rice. Â It kills the whole roll.
What I did not like about our experience at Sushi Kushi Too, is as follows:
1. While the rice/filling ratio was good, the rolls were sloppy. Â They do not take any pride in presentation here.
2. For the amount of staff working that evening, service could've been more attentive.
3. There was a fruit fly hanging out near our sushi all night. Â This makes me question the cleanliness of the whole establishment.
4. Someone who works there's girlfriend was (seemingly) drunk and hanging out at the sushi bar all night, being generally loud and rude.
5. No background music.
6. Servers complaining about their tips right in front of us.
I cannot say that I'll be back. Â Mark another failed sushi attempt off in Highland Park for me. Â Sad.
I think I found the best ramen noodles in the northern suburbs here. Went here on a recent Saturday night with my wife, jonesing for some ramen. Â Voila! Â They had Taiwan Style Ramen on the menu. Â Nice big pieces of pork, delicious and perfectly cooked ramen noodles, and a great broth. It's on par, but different, from the ramen you get in the food court at Mitsuwa. Â Great sushi here too. Â Great menu...lots to choose from, including some entrees I haven't seen at other Japanese restaurants, and I've been to quite a few. Service is friendly. Â A bit of a wait on weekend nights, but that's testament to the oishii eats here. Located in downtown Highland Park. Â Street parking on a weekend night is a bit of challenge, but there's a large lot east of the restaurant about two and half blocks away.
Review Source:Stopped by Sushi Kushi Too for another lunch today and tried the Cubbie roll - deep fried spicy tuna with additional spicy mayo and wasabi mayo on top. Â I'll admit it is not the healthiest item on the menu - but it was very very good. Â Give it a try - or better yet split it up with friends so you don't feel like a total glutton!
Otherwise - same great service and food here.
Went back for lunch carryout with a friend.
Sticky overcooked sushi rice - she had a three roll combo of spicy tuna and two other spicy rolls. Â Not worth 15.00 just because it was large - it was mostly rice.
I had four pieces of nigiri with a tuna roll that had 6 very small pieces. Â This also came to $15.00.
All in all, there are a lot better things you can do at lunchtime with $15.00.
Full disclosure: I'm from Chicago but have lived in LA for the past 7 years, so I'm accustomed to above average sushi at the very worst, simply because of the general freshness of fish on the west coast.
Sushi Kushi is a casual neighborhood joint in downtown Highland Park. It has an extensive menu of sushi, rolls, teriyaki, shish kabobs, hot and cold appetizers. Kudos to the broad menu and reasonable prices, particularly for sushi. But the quality is simply average. Not terrible but nothing great.
On a recent night we had:
Gomae
Edamame (too watery, not salty enough)
Spicy scallop roll inside out with wasabi tobiko (best roll of the night)
Rainbow roll (usually my favorite, kind of bland)
Fresh salmon and avocado roll (fine)
Chicago roll (meh)
This place is fine if you're looking for reasonably priced sushi. Though don't expect much.
Get the Bento Box for lunch, It's under $10 - A deal in my mind and I counted 6 items (sticky brown rice, seaweed salad, fried shrimp and veggie, beef teriyaki, steam veggy and spicy tuna roll) Â and unlimited ice cold water.
Plenty of seating outdoor with a spectacular view of downtown Highland Park and of course, free parking.
I have been frequenting Arthur and the staff at SKT for over 10 years.
If you want the freshest in Ahi, Mirugai, Hamachi, Uni and the like, this is the place. Toro, the best of the tuna is usually available. First come, first serve.
He even carries things that are not on the menu and available to the few who know to ask for them. Aji...a wonderful and scarce little fish is wonderfully prepared with shaved ginger and a special sauce.
Have you ever heard of Sasadango? It is a desert item that few have ever tried. Bamboo leaves surrounding a not too sweet pod of red bean ice cream. Truly and acquired taste, yet one worth trying if your lucky enough to find it. It comes from Japan and is wrapped in the leaf with Bamboo string ties at each end.
Arthur takes great pride in his work and the staff is very helpful.
FYI- I come from Florida and have owned my own fishing boat. I catch Tuna and all the salt water species. When I say it is fresh...believe me.
I am there once a week, so give it a try.

For up here in Highland park, this place is solid.
Ambiance is decent. Servers are eh, but the sushi chefs are very friendly.
Sushi is decent for the price.
The ramen here however, is fantastic. In particular, try the taiwan style - it is a solid meal on it's own.
I have never had a bad meal here; at worst I've had an okay meal and at best  I had a fantastic one.
Here's all I can say to recommend this place - the sushi chefs are Japanese and they serve unfiltered sake. However, if you like bland, unimaginative rolls, not-so-fresh fish, over-the-top prices and your aging aunt's attic decor, this could be the ticket. I hate to say it but I've had better sushi prepackaged at Whole Foods.
Review Source:I actually do find the food to be pretty good however after a recent visit I had a unusually poor experience related to my credit card bill. Apparently SK erroniously overcharged me by submitting two seperate bills. after repeated phone calls to the restaurant they still were unable to resolve the issue. i had to call the credit card company to handle on my own.
Review Source:Fast and polite service, high quality food, and warm atmosphere. Â What more could you ask for?
Sushi Kushi is the place to go for Japanese food. Â I was recommended to come here by a friend and I was not disappointed. Â I ordered the salmon bento box, and it came with miso soup, california rolls, vegetable tempura, salad, noodles, rice, potato, and the salmon of course. Â Great meal!
The place had below par sushi for over the top prices. Some rolls were a little rice heavy and low fish content, while others like the spicy salmon and eel roll were not bad. The first time I went I had a worse experience, but this past time, it was a tad better making me think that I will be back since it's so close to work. I do think they need to lower their prices since the rolls are small. Just as any 3 star place, I would say it's A-OK. Not the best nor the worst I've ever had. Def. worth a try if you're in the area!
In the summer, they have some outdoor seating which is always a plus for me!
SERVICE AT THIS LOCATION IS TERRIBLE!
Â
What really stinks about this is that Sushi Kushi Toyo in Lake Forest is pretty great. I assume they are under the same ownership and I feel like my poor experience with one totally affects how I feel about the other.
Get it?
SK Too in Highland Park has GOOD SUSHI.
Their SERVICE is HORRIBLE.
Everything I ordered was fresh and tasty, no worries about their food quality or authenticity -and it is a pretty and clean place, even prettier than the original in the strip mall. This is one of those places where the waitstaff seems like they are actually pretending not to hear you!
We had such a difficult time getting anything more after our initial order...it was an ordeal to get a few more sushi pieces, a big problem to order a Sprite for one of the kids after the initial drink order...and for a Saturday dinner, right at opening -they sure were out of a lot of stuff.
They were both rude and indifferent.
Though we ordered a good percentage of the menu and spent a good amount of loot...we were treated with disregard. Unfortunately this is how some places can act when they have cornered the market as they have with their quality of food.
Thanks for the not so great service -we are sure you don't care if we ever come back. Sushi Kushi Too Rude. 1 star, I'd give you zero if I could.
Sushi Kushi Too is a comfortable, neighborhood sushi restaurant offering quality at a fair price (given that it is located in downtown Highland Park). My sister introduced me to this place as she works up the road at Fort Sheridan, and we've eaten here on many occasions over the past few years.
The atmosphere and decor is sort of a contemporary Asian motif, with the long sushi bar dominating the room and space for a few tables. Upon walking in you might think it is trendy but the food is really more traditional.
Ramen noodles here are a good choice for a lunch meal if you don't want sushi, but I think you'll want to at least try some of the rolls. I like the Central Roll best but all of them are beautifully assembled and presented, and most importantly, are delicious. Â The only nitpick I have here is that there sometimes is a heavy hand on the sauce they use to dress the rolls.
Fish is standard in terms of portion size and freshness. I tend to prefer sashimi these days over nigiri but both are recommended here. Service is inconsistent, usually attentive but sometimes slow, especially on busy Fridays and Saturdays. It's best to arrive early because once the crush hits, it stays crowded until the later hours. Sushi Kushi Too is on my recommendation list.
I think the people who like this place hasn't had really good sushi.
The best thing they have is the tuna brittle.
I been here many times, but the last time I went, I took my kids and mom. My daughter ordered a rice dish. It came out long after the sushi even after I mention to the waitress that we were still waiting on it. When it came out, we were practically done with our dinner and my daughter had eaten a few pieces of sushi because she was so hungry.
I went to the older gentleman at the register and explained the situation. I told him, I know it does not take 45 minutes to make a rice and chicken. I told him we were already done with our dinner and that I asked the waitress twice about my daughter's dish. I requested he take her meal off our bill since she did not touch it and based on my assumption, the waitress probably never placed the order with the kitchen.
He would not budge. on a meal that was maybe $7. He said it takes about an hour for that dish. That was BS, considering I'm Asian myself and I know how long it takes to make it, maybe 15 minutes from start to finish, even with making the rice. My mom laughed when I told her he said it takes an hour. He would not take it off our $90 bill and I told him I would never returned.
It's not smart to lose a customer over $7, for a mistake they made. I will never returned and if you explain to other sushi restaurants how the tuna brittle is, they can make it.
I done many take outs from this place and though it's okay sushi, it's not the best. There are better, even across the street at Sushi Badaya.
This place was recommended to me by my boss, a big-time foodie and cook (he knows his sh*t).
The quality of the food here is excellent. Very fresh fish. It's not designer/trendy sushi, but it is still prepared with a elegant style to it.
Like any good sushi restaurant, you have to get the chef's selection or some combination of fresh fish to really evaluate their food. Â
The portions are average, and the price is on-par for a high quality sushi place.
I would definitely recommend this place to any looking for sushi in the North Shore.
Try the avodcado salad - it is a bed of fresh tuna, layered with fresh avocado. it turns heads in the restaurant.
I used to work doors away from this place and I frequented quite often. Â Whether the office would order pick up or I'd grab a late dinner there with friends, I ate here once every other week.
The sushi is fresh, the service prompt, and the presentation delightful. Â Pretty good value for the price you pay. Â While it's not the cheapest place out there - let's remember we're in the northshore, folks. Â Nothing in this area is truly cheap - this probably just adds to its bougie appeal. Â
This place can get crowded during peak dinner time. Â Their outdoor dining area is very pleasant for feasting and people watching, especially during the summers! Â Beware on weekends if you're not into that "family" scene - you may just find yourself falling victim to the innocent 3 and 4 year olds who have successfully flung their food in your direction with their apt usage of chopsticks. Â
They are also closed one weekday (either Monday or Tuesday - seems to depend on the season) so call ahead!
I'd skip Sushi Kushi Too. Â I've been twice, once for dinner and once for lunch. Â I found the quality of the fish to be average at best.
Our first visit was for dinner. Â The food was really nothing special. Â Prices are fair. Â The very small restaurant had 3 families with small children so it was a bit noisy.
I gave it another try today, looking for somewhere different for lunch. Â I was disappointed in the lunch specials. Â Everything seemed very heavy, I wanted a couple rolls and some miso. Â There isn't a lunch special for rolls. Â I asked my waiter if they could substitute tofu or fish for the chicken/beef teriyaki in the bento box. Â He said he had to ask the chef, went back to the counter where he, the manager, and a waitress took turns giving me odd looks. Â He then proceeded to wait on another table before returning to tell me they wouldn't make any substitutions. Â I ordered a la carte. Â My food was really disappointing this time. Â The spicy tuna roll was more mayonnaise than tuna.
The restaurant was packed for lunch and the tables are right on top of one another. Â It was physically impossible for me to get out from the banquette without bumping into one of my neighbors. Â (I'm a thin person.) Â Not very private for my quiet lunch out.
One of the first things you learn in any basic psych course is how Pavlov induced a reaction to a stimulus in his dog. The dog salivated when it heard a bell because it knew food was coming. Similarly, I feel like salivating when I hear about Sushi Kushi because I realize how awesome it is.
Sushi Kushi Too is absolutely delicious, and high-quality sushi. The prices are high but not horrific, and the sentence preceding this one justifies them. The appetizers and sushi rolls both receive much attention, and other dishes, like teryaki, are great as well. I love the brittle hot tuna appetizer, and the miso is good too. They have ever-rotating daily specials, but the Highland Park, Red Dragon, Cubbie (woo hoo!), and Shrimp Lovers' rolls are among the best. Even a simple vegetable roll is well made. They also have Ramun-e, the Japanese answer to Sprite, and it is delicious. When my close-to-but-not of age friends and I like to have adorable toasting moments, we toast with Ramun-es. Delicious.
The space is a little bit crowded and that can be overwhelming, as can be the wait. But they do the best with the space they have. And its business is a testament to how good it is!
Ok the sushi is really quite tasty!
Everything here was quite well made, and the place looks like your average sushi eatery. Â The reason for the 3 star review is the service.
The place was incredibly busy and the waitstaff were definitely in the weeds. Â I myself was a waitress for many years and can understand this, however the mistakes made were pretty brutal. Â
We ordered, and it took about 30 minutes for my rolls to come up, and and one of my rolls that I ordered was never delivered to the table. Â The lady that was waiting on us seemed annoyed when I asked for it. Â
So the food was quite excellent, but I would personally go somewhere else if I wanted to be treated well for the money that I was spending.
I work up here in HP, and Sushi Kushi is close and although they can get quite crowded at lunch, they know I teach and need to get back to work and are quick. Â I usually get sushi here, which although can be a bit pricey, is always excellent. Â They have some interesting and tasty rolls as well if ya don't mind dropping $15 for roll. Â Today, I had their special which was not sushi, but a Japanese meal which was huge and extremely tasty, with lots of variety. Â Shrimp and Veggie Tempura over some rice with an addicting sauce, big bowl of soup with Udon noodles, salad with ginger dressing, little scoop of cold, tasty mashed potatolike item, cruncy cold veggie dish and this little side of chicken with another addicting sauce. Â And it was about $8 which goes way against the priciness (sp?) mentioned earlier in regards to the sushi. Â The problem was that I ate so much that I started dozing off at the board while trying to teach quadratic equations!!
