Let me start off by saying that Sweet would be a great place for a dessert date or a night out with girlfriends. Though I didn't drink, I was impressed by the huge cocktail menu and the fact that Sweet provides a beer and wine recommendation for every dessert it has. Very thoughtful.
The appetizers we ordered were delicious. Their serving size is on the tiny side, though, so if there are more than two in your group I would order a few to share. When it comes to dessert, you won't want to spare more than a bite for other people because they are just that good. I had the "Hot" Chocolate Sundae and cannot recommend it enough. Truly inventive and exceeded my expectations.
I wasn't a big fan of the cupcakes, unfortunately. The red velvet I ordered was very buttery -- that, and the icing was white instead of cream cheese. Other than that, the only thing that made me pause was the long wait for our appetizers. Then again, that might have been a one-time fluke. I would love to return the next time in town.
I am a really big dessert person- and an even bigger cannoli person. I REALLY wanted to give Sweet a 5-star rating because I think that the idea of having a bar that is also a bakery is one of the most genius ideas there is.
Their cannolis are fantastic. 100% fantastic cannolis. However their service is horrendous. Their bartenders are horrific and I don't think they know how to make a good drink. If you order a mojito- don't expect there to be mint in it. If you order wine- don't expect it to be poured gracefully. If you order a martini- expect it to be overflowing or half-full. It is so inconsistent it's strange. It is mostly this one guy....
It is this one guy in particular that is always working the seems to be the main concern. He never smiles or makes anyone feel welcome. He slams the drinks down on the bar, carelessly. He just doesn't seem to like his job, and it seems like we are bothering him by even being there. It's kind of annoying and thinking about it- I don't really want to sit at the bar anymore.
Also. We usually sit at the bar. This is because one night I went in there on a double date and we sat at a table. It took a server over 10 minutes to come over and acknowledge us. This doesn't seem like long.. but this place has maybe 6 tables in there... and maybe 2 were taken?? It is annoying when no one is doing anything and you are a customer being ignored. So we started sitting at the bar.
Their desserts that the pastry chefs make are amazing, and that is what saves them. Like their french donuts and their smores and cake and raspberry ice cream and fondue. Â But you would think that because they cater to a late-night crowd they would wait to make their cupcakes later in the day-but every time I have one it seems stale.
Overall I will only really go here if everyone else wants to go here- or my boyfriend and I will stop here on the way home and get a cannoli to go. Or just get a late night pastry-chef hot-dessert if that makes sense.
Like I said I really want to rate this place better but I just can't. Maybe if they stepped it up with the service I could but overall that is what makes a place.
After a nice dinner in Worcester, we wanted to try a new place for dessert. Â Â Based on the proximity of downtown and the reviews, we decided to stop at Sweet. Â Â It was really different, the front part of the store is like a bakery, bright lights, many cupcakes and desserts in a display...a few tables....then the back of the store is like a retro bar....dim lighting and small tables. Â Â Â I ordered the bread pudding and it was just OK....it was kind of hard, not very moist like I am used to....the whipped cream was homemade. Â Â Overall a nice place if you are looking for cupcakes....they seem to have a large selection.
Review Source:I really wanted to like this place. It has a romantic, tucked away feel and yummy desserts. The drinks we got were too strong for our liking, undrinkable really, and when we told our waitress she scolded us and told us all Martinis are strong... It also took a long time for our desserts to  get to our table... By the time they arrived we had kind of lost the excitement of trying this spot for the first time. I would try again, though.
Review Source:So came here for a cupcake but stayed for warm desserts. This bakery has a lounge area in the back with a 6 page drink menu. They also have another menu for hot Mighty Tea teas for about $3 and spiked coffee drinks for $8. We ordered drinks and then I ordered French donuts and my boyfriend got the white chocolate cheesecake.
As we waited we got a tea "jell-o' covered with key lime cream in a sample cup. It was very yummy but if you taste the gelay itself, I wish it tasted more like tea.
The French donuts were flakey and served in a paper bag. There were 3 rectangular delicious donuts filled with chocolate served with a creamy caramel sauce. The cheesecake came with a berry sauce spread on the plate. the crust was like a sponge cake, not the traditional graham cracker crust we come to expect. It was coated with a white chocolate sauce and when you mix the sauce with every bite, it's PERFECT.
When we got the check we received 2 yummy toffee cookies as well. The service was also impeccable! The most friendliest manager ever!
Cafe Dolce might be gone, but Sweet more than fills the void. Â This place is fun, cozy and just a fantastic concept. The desserts are delicious and drink menu is insanely overwhelming (in a good way). Martinis, Â specialty drinks, wine, beer- they got it! Â I had the creme brule martini and it was a tad bit sweet for my taste, but aside from that it was tasty. Â The Panna Cotta was a very good contrast, as it was not nearly as sweet. Â Bannas Foster was just amazing. Â They also have a few tidbits of regular (non dessert) food. Service seemed a bit slow, but maybe they did not want us to feel rushed...
You will leave with a sugar high and want to go back for more.
I've been here several times since my last review and have expanded beyond the delicious cupcakes to their other wonderful desserts. I have tried several desserts here including the white chocolate cheesecake with strawberries (as beautiful as it is delicious), chocolate fondue, hot chocolate sundae (the mix of spicy and cold is addicting), the s'mores (complete with your own mini camp fire), the caramel bread pudding, and the french doughnuts. Â All desserts were delicious!
The service is excellent- waiters are friendly and attentive and Alina the owner is a true "sweet genius", shes super nice and really involved in the restaraunt. She even came to our table and gave my son fondant and Play dough cutters to play with while we waited for our dessert.
If your in Worcester you must check out Sweets!
(My only quip is that they aren't open on Sundays and I especially want dessert on Sundays )
The "Hot" Chocolate Sundae was quite decadent and the French Donuts are amazing as well. The place had a steady flow of customers on a Saturday night. The decor was kind of plain, but the food certainly made up for it. We were put in a corner with little light that made it tough to read the menu. Not a place I will frequent on a regular based on the prices. Being a craft beer geek... I did like the fact that they had beer & wine pairings to accompany the desserts. If I'm in the mood for a decadent dessert it will be on my short list.
Review Source:The savories and sweets are wonderfully decadent at this local gem. You will have to wait a bit of time after you order for the treat to arrive on your table, it's because they are making it from scratch behind the bar and in back. The wait is worth it, and we just order another drink while we wait. And the drinks are very well made, so having two is a no brainer. Go here with friends you have not seen in a while, sit back and enjoy.
Review Source:This is a popular spot amongst my friends. Â We frequent the bar rather than popping in for some cupcakes to take home. Â We're big fans of the chocolate fondue and of the french donuts! Both are easily shared amongst a group of 4-6 people. Â I will say that their drink is a little slow (there might be only one bartender on duty). Â
Occasionally, you will see quasi-celebrity chef Alina Eisenhower there. Â For someone who has won culinary competitions on tv, she could easily be very full of herself. Â However, I find her to be quite personable and more than willing to answer any questions you have. Â The waitstaff is always very friendly. Â There have been several occasions where we've "closed down the bar" and the staff was happy to wait on us til we were ready to leave.
This is one of my favorite places to go in Worcester.
I guess there might have been a change in the staff of this place. Most of the reviews I read here complain about the staff and I was there with a bunch of friends last Saturday close to midnight, the place was pretty full, but even then the staff seemed to be pretty efficient and super friendly.
The drinks were awesome! Tons of options, all sounded great and honestly it took us a lot longer to decide on one than it took them to get the drinks ready. The service was super fast. I only took one star because of the food. I order one cupcake that was way too sweet for my taste and I didn't really care about the frosting, but all of my friends seemed to be very happy with their choices, which were: toasted cocconut cupcake, creme brulée and a canoli.
Came in on a random Tuesday night. Â The bar was pretty empty, most of the traffic was just for the bakery portion, so we were skeptical at first. Â So glad we stayed for a couple cocktails and desserts. Â Everything was delicious! Â Also, the bartender was trying to come up with a drink for a competition so he let us be guinea pigs! Â Also, I had been looking for a bar in Worcester that was different and similar to one you would find back home in Chicago, and this is definitely close. Â
Since then we've gotten cupcakes from here many times, and it's always delicious! Â I definitely recommend Sweet!
This is a delayed review for an encounter in October 2011.
It had been almost 2 years since I ate at Sweet (due to moving to Portland, OR) and this place has not changed at all. Chef Eisenhauer continues to create amazing desserts. In the past I would get the doughnuts which came piping hot in a brown paper bag, dusted in sugar, and were fun to dip into a chocolate sauce. Yum!
This time I was in the mood for cupcakes. The red velvet cupcake was superb. The cake was a perfect balance of moistness and firmness. The frosting was appropriately sweet and thick.
Seeing that I like red velvet, Chef Eisenhauer suggested that I pair it with the carrot cake cupcake. Â She was right! Â The carrot cake cupcake was hands down the BEST carrot cake that I've ever had. The cake was flavorful, full, and appropriately soft. The frosting was beautifully sweet and rich and did not overpower the cake or my palate.
It was an honor to meet Chef Eisenhauer. Too bad her shop isn't in Portland, OR. This Foodnetwork star would totally destroy the cupcake scene in the pacific NW.
Sweet is a nice place to share a delicious drink and dessert with friends. The back room is dimly lit with a smell of caramel apple in the air. I would call the decor urban chic with girly undertones. There is usually some light music in the background that adds to the atmosphere but does not make it hard to hear your friends. The dessert chef (and i believe partial owner) prepares all of the fabulous desserts within view of the bar. She has been on the foodnetwork several times. I have been here on a number of occasions and have always been impressed with the food and drinks. If you go here you simply must try one of their martinis. They are spot on with the alchemy. My personal favorite is the oatmeal cookie.
As far as the service goes, it is slow (as other reviewers have commented). This doesn't really bother me as I am usually not in a rush when I go here but i could see where it might reach the point of frustrating for some people. When I have had younger waitress here they have been a little on the sulky-Sam side and not very knowledgeable about the food or drinks. That said, the somewhat older waitresses are always very pleasant and helpful.
4.5 stars for the desserts and drinks. They were presented nicely and the creme brulee and cheesecake were delicious. The pastry chef was there that night preparing the desserts to order.
2 stars for the customer service. Our server, Nate was MIA most of the night. We had to ask the female server to take our order and refill our waters.
And although the place was not very busy on a Saturday night, we were forewarned that the desserts would come out a little slow because of a big table-- we didn't mind. Nonetheless, we also ordered hummus, which oddly came out at the same time as the desserts (about 30+ minutes later) and our tortilla chips were stale. Why did it take so long for hummus and chips?
We were never asked how our food tasted. And when we finally caught Nate's attention for some more water, we received luke warm water and a little bit of an attitude...
I left with mixed feelings.
This review is not about the place itself or the service or the ambiance, but about the absolutely delicious cupcake that a friend got me last night and I am currently eating at 9:30 in the morning. Â
If this cupcake is any indication of what else may exist at this place, then you MUST GO NOW. Â Mmmmm.... chocolate cupcake with raspberry frosting..... breakfast of champions.
Beyond Amazing! Every bite was pure Heaven!
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Had a small group of people with me and we sampled everything. There was not an unhappy person in the group.
We all enjoyed every single bite.
Well worth your time!
This place should be added to everyone's bucket list!
I think the concept of this place is fantastic.
Sweets in the front? Party in the back? Umm, ok!
I had dessert at the bar and I really liked it! I had the "cracker jack" , which is popcorn ice cream covered in salted peanuts. umm, so good. so, so, so good.
side note - Someone mentioned party favors in Brookline, yes, they still are the best. Their frosting is unbelievable, I swear there's crack in it.
As was stated before, good concept, poorly executed. The cupcakes are just not good enough for the price (which gets quite high for fancy cupcakes). They simply are too hard and dense to be cupcakes in my opinion.
Perhaps this place is better at night, since it turns into a pseudo-bar. Perhaps I will try it out at some point and re-rate.
Great concept - poor execution. Â
Enter into a small bakery storefront.  A few cases of cupcakes (2-3$ a pop), biscotti and canoli, examples of their custom occasions and wedding cakes (beautiful!) and offers for their "College Care Packs" (...where was this when I was in school?)...pretty standard, right?  BUT WAIT, there's more!  If you talk to the person behind the cupcake counter about the backroom bar (4pm-2am Tuesday-Saturday) - VOILA! - you will be taken behind the large velvet curtain into  sort of a modern day speakeasy.  A dim room (no really...it was hard to read the menu) - a large bar - small tables - weird musical selection (like "strip club" music) - aaaaand nooooobody around.  [cricket chirp]  A bad sign for 11pm on a Saturday night?  Poor marketing?  Who knows, but it made me skeptical about this bar.
I was along for a birthday extravaganza in February, a party of fifteen and there was no problem seating us all (several tables were brought together). Â Our server was kind, but it was only her third day (maybe someone with more experience would have been able to handle this party's orders more efficiently). Â She handed out dessert menus featuring delicious options for a price: beignets, cakes, etc. Â I skipped the dessert (I know - ME?!) and headed straight for the martini list. Â I ordered a French Martini (some sweet prosecco concoction) for me and Carmel Apple Martini for the beau (sweet and not tart with Carmel dripping down the rim into the glass) - about 9 to 12$ per drink. Â It took a while to receive our orders despite bar's the dwindling attendance, and I was served someone else's martini (...if you're not going to be fast or cheap - at least get my order right). Â
The music was weird, the space was too dim, and service was with a smile....but SLOW. Â Sweet appears to deliver in the baked goods dept...but maybe needs a little more fine tuning around the bar...
I wanted to like it, I really did, if only because the following math makes sense: Â alcohol+dessert=fun, and going out not necessarily = spending a million $$... Â Also, it's kinda cool that they're a local celebrity of sorts, having been on Cupcake Wars, albeit, knocked off after the second round.
But...
Maybe I just don't get "cupcakes?"Are we still on that? Â Since, what, 2007? Â Like Damien S. said even back then, paraphrased: "Can't we just have cake cake?"
I thought the display case was saddishly empty, like at Dunkin Donuts when they're about to close and all the good donuts are gone. Â It automatically makes the goods look stale. Â I also thought the cupcakes weren't all that attractive. Â Where is the stylishly applied bouffant frosting? Â Where are the cutesy decorations? Â The frosting was shmeared on like cream cheese on a bagel at... Dunkin Donuts.... (Ok, I really don't know why Dunkin Donuts keeps coming up as a DON'T of bakeries...)
The flavors not very creative, either. Â What's so fun about Brown and Brwon frosting? Â Brown with Pink? Â White with Pink? Â there was one that had Stout (like, beer?) in the cupcake, but somehow that does not sound appetizing to me...
We finally picked out a couple. Â Brought them home. Â Made some tea. Â Dug in the fork.
Again, maybe, I just don't get "cupcakes?" Â
I just see or taste no difference between these cupcakes and say, Stop'n Shop sheetcake. Â With heavy lardy frosting. Â You know?
The cannoli wasn't bad, the girl was nice, kudos on the TV appearance, and I admit, I am generous with the stars, because, again, maybe, I don't get the cupcake???
We walked in after dinner down the street expecting to grab a couple of cupcakes and be on our way. We were pleasantly surprised to see table service in the back-room and decided to try it out.
Desserts were good. I had the black forest cheesecake and the husband had a mint chocolate cupcake and took a peanut butter cupcake for the road. There was also a nice little surprise when the check came - two mini samples of mint cupcake. Cute!
I love the concept they have going here. There's something for everyone - apps on one side of the menu, desserts on the other, coffee, and drinks. I did, however, feel that something was "off" about the atmosphere. Despite their attempts at trendy decor, the room didn't feel as cozy as it should have. The open-kitchen concept also seemed a little strange.
What could be better with dessert than alcohol!?
No, seriously...
For those that haven't been, there is a dessert take out counter when you first walk in where you can get desserts to go (they make some of the tastier cupcakes I've had in a long time), but the real gem is in the back where there is a dessert bar...
The atmosphere in the back is a little swanky but not enough to make you feel out of place. You can order dessert and they also have a full bar. You can order whatever you want but the menu suggests beer/wine pairings for each dessert (if you buy the recommended pairing you actually save a few dollars!)
I recently went here with a friend who lives close by for dessert after dinner and it was an awesome experience. Our waitress was very friendly, attentive, and helpful. She made recommendations for those in our party who needed them but didn't try to up-sell those of us who didn't. I got the poached pears (with recommended beer) which were delicious and my friend got the French Donuts (which I think were my favorite item on the menu.)
Overall it is a grate place to unwind at the end of the night with friends over tasty desserts and a beer/cocktail/wine. If you're in the area I highly recommend you stop by and check them out!
The cupcakes are well-sized, the cake is moist and the frosting is good. Â I wouldn't say they are the best cupcakes I've ever tried or that they even compare to some of the cupcake places in the bigger cities (i.e. Chicago or NY) but they taste good and look cute. Â I was pretty impressed with the Mint frosted cupcake but besides that, the other flavors I tried were good, not great.
Maybe a tad over-priced but since it's the only cupcake joint in the area, Sweet knows it's role. :-)
Sweet sounded like a place I would be into, but the experiences I've had so far haven't reeled me in yet. First time, I was pleased with the food (I got the fondue) but the service was a little out of whack. My boyfriend and I had several servers, which made things a little confusing and we had to wait a good hour for our orders to arrive. However, one of the three servers we had kept apologizing for the delay and assured us the long wait was because owner was making all the desserts by hand.
The second visit is the main reason for the deduction in stars. For starters, the server we had appeared a bit annoyed my friend and I were sitting in the area behind the curtain and only ordering cupcakes and coffee - even though it was not a busy night. The cupcake I ordered looked pretty, but tasted dry and the frosting was too rich and sugary . As for the coffee, it tasted like it had been sitting for days...I will note this place is fairly new, and might be working out a few kinks?
After something that happened to me recently, my friend decided to send me a sweet treat--cupcakes from Sweet. Â Someone attempted to contact me on Thursday, but because I didn't check my messages, I didn't get the call until Friday. Â I called them back, but I was at the hospital and ended up picking up the cupcakes at 7:30 that evening because it was on the way home. Â I really like the concept of a dessert bar. Â It was a cute bakery but I didn't go to the bar in the back because I wanted to get home. Â
My friend ordered me two dozen cupcakes and they were huge! Â They were also totally delicious. Â There was a variety-- chocolate cake with dark chocolate ganache, mocha frosting, and vanilla frosting, and vanilla cake with vanilla, strawberry, and mocha frosting. Â All included a surprise creamy filling. Â The more frosting, the better, is what I always say. Â
I love how they are open until 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays. Â A girl's night would be wonderful at this place, with dessert and wine pairings. Â
P.S. This is not to be confused with Sweet in Boston. Â They are totally separate establishments.
I picked this place as where I wanted to go and spend part of last Saturday night. Upon arriving at Sweet we stepped into a bakery which was decorated fairly unimpressively. Behind a drawn back curtain however was a sleek, trendy dessert heaven.
Any place that can hand me a menu listing twelve delicious, decadent desserts; each paired with a wine/ beer is given two thumbs up in my book. I had the French Doughnuts and the Dogfish Raison D'etre beer. Divine. Beyond words. My boyfriend ordered the creme brullee and the suggested beer. Also delicious. While Sweet is a splurge for a college student, the trendy, calming atmosphere and delicious desserts make it worthwhile. Love. Love. Love.
I am a huge fan of Sweet. The French Donuts are absolutely fabulous! They are basically warm fried dough with a lucious chocolate filling in the middle. They are like Heaven in your mouth! The other desserts are good as well, but they just don't compare to the French Donuts! I have only tried a couple of the drinks. They are good, but not fantastic. I have certainly had better chocolate martinis before.
The decor is very modern and the lights are dim. It's the perfect place for a date with your significant other. It's also a great place for groups of people, as they have a large table in the back for just that occasion. Reservations are best if it is a group situation though.
Unfortunately, I am not able to go to Sweet all that often because it's a bit pricey. If it were a little cheaper, my husband and I would be there much more often. The reason I gave Sweet a 4 star rating is simply due to the price. If it were cheaper, it would have gotten 5 stars.
I will reiterate.. Try the French Donuts! You will not be sorry!
Sweet is okay.
I went with a few of the ladies late one afternoon. Â We sampled:
Chocolate cupcake with peanutbutter frosting: Â Holy frosting! Â The frosting to cake ratio is out of control. Â The cupcake itself was sort of dry, with a decent chocolate flavor. Â The frosting did not taste of p.b. at all and was cloyingly, tooth-numbingly sweet.
Mini cheesecake: Â I didn't get a bite of this, as my sister hoovered it. Â She said it was delicious.
Tiramisu: I thought it was pretty dry, but somehow still had really good flavor.
Snickers torte thingy: I didn't try this, as I can't eat peanuts, but the girl who ordered it thought it was tasty, but over the top sweet. Â She only ate half of it.
Since it was only about 5pm, we just ate at the small table in the retail section. Â It looks like... a storefront, albeit a bland, and almost unwelcoming storefront.
Not sure if I'd go back. Â Nothing was crazy expensive, so maybe I'll give 'em another try.
i TRIED to like this places desserts...i've been a worcester resident for my entire life...i am never happier than when i find out a female owned business has popped up in the somewhat stunted, boys club of a city...so naturally i was very excited to hear that a relatively young woman had opened up a bakery on Shrewsbury Street. I tried some of Sweet's cookies and one of their oh so hyped cupcakes at the Worcester's Taste of the Nation benefit for hunger and was so so unimpressed. I just couldn't see what all the fuss was about..the cupcake tasted blah and sort of cheap, it was a dry, sugary cupcake comparable to something a 12 year old could concoct from a box of dry cake mix...the frosting tasted like sugary shortening =(. I don't think lard should be used in frosting, there are far better, more tasteful alternatives....
the bakery itself is pretty, but the bar area borders on gaudy...some people called it "plush"..i think it was just a bit overstated and slightly tacky...also sweet is now offering infused Vodka drinks but my reccomendation as a Worcester local is to try Allgos on Shrewsbury Street for infused drinks...they've been doing it longer and offer better desserts and a much much less pretentious atmosphere....Sweet is all appearance and hype, not much substance though...
Beautiful, scrumptious desserts in a cozy, modernly decorated lounge on Shrewsbury Street. The owner/chef Alina is a sweet heart, extreamly driven and a perfectionist making her desserts award winning.
The chocolate fondue is homemade chocolate sauce served in a small bowl hovering over a small lit candle, so it stays warm and smooth throughout the night. It's served with fresh strawberries, bananas, cherries, homemade marshmallows (to die for), homemade rice crispy treats, Â and pretzel rods. A delicious nibbler dish!
The creme brulee is Alina's favorite, and she makes it right in front of you using a blow torch!
A full bar is served by good looking, friendly bartenders. There are leather seats, or bar stools at the bar. The bar is open until midnight on Wednesday and Thursday, and either 1am or 2am depending on the crowd on Friday and Saturdays. During the morning/afternoons a ton of different muffins, breads, pasteries, desserts, biscotti, etc. is served in front room.
A perfect date place!
I have never been to an eating establishment quite like Sweet. Â When I walked in the front door for the first time, what I saw was what I had expected: a little, white bakery with a small selection of tasty-looking cupcakes and cookies and such, a register, and a few seats. Â The friend that brought me and several others to Sweet, however, led us past the counter to a door in the back, where we waited until they were able to seat us. Â And WOW! Â There was a huge bar, comfortable leather chairs, much more cozy mood lighting and trendy music. Â It was like a totally different place!
We were greeted with an amazing looking menu of fresh desserts, made fresh and on-demand by Sweet's executive pastry chef (yes an executive pastry chef, who is super-amazing), including Creme Brulee, Cheese Cake, Chocolate Fondue, and many more, all for $9 each. Â Plus, all of these desserts include great little snacks before and also after the main dessert (Earl Grey Ice Cream?! Â Mini-Cupcake?! Â Nice...). Â We tried the fondue (which we tried again, and again), and loved it. Â The quality of the food and experience was outstanding, and if you are worried about the prices, don't be - it is so worth it!
I can't recommend Sweet highly enough for a really fun and delicious late-night outing with friends.
This place is AWESOME! I have to say this is the BEST establishment in all of Worcester, which is a pretty bold statement. Â
I've never head of a dessert bar before, and it was amazing. Â There is a bakery shop in front that is pretty standard, but the bar in the back is where it's at. Â It's very trendy with a great ambiance, wonderful music, and comfy chairs. Â The service is great!
Some say that it's a bit pricey, but these desserts are worth every penny. Â Besides, many desserts in restaurants come pretty close anyway. Â Desserts at $9 that comes with an amuse (a min pre dessert) and a petit four afterwards. Â I got a sampler for $10.25 that comes with the amuse, petit four, and 3 mini versions of desserts on the menu. Â I got a creme brulee which was creamy and delicious, a chocolate sundae that had a decadent chocolate cake on the bottom, and the banana's foster which looked like mini egg rolls that came with a caramel dipping sauce. Â SO good! My friends got the chocolate fondue, which was amazing. Â
Also, to answer other yelpers, they do serve cupcakes at the bar. Â Although with other much more amazing desserts I don't think I'd waste my time on cupcakes.
All in all, i LOVE this place and will come every chance I get.
I had no idea what to expect with a name like Sweet. Â I figured it was a quaint, cutsey type of bakery like most that are sprinkled all over Worcester. Â I wasn't sure I would like it and with an ongoing and everlasting diet I'm on...not a welcomed place in my mind. Â But for the sake of Yelping...*sigh* Â I will try my hardest to help people out. Â It was not tough to do.
I swear this place was like Black and White between the bakery up front and the lounge in back of the heavy drapes. Â Wow...It's a total decadence. Â Red and black walls, black leather chairs and couches and a great bar! Â The drinks were luscious and strong. Â The coffee was to die for. Â The deserts? Â How can you hate chocolate bread pudding that tastes like warm melted fudge?? Â I tasted Mandah's chocolate cake and it was very rich and loved it. Â They give you samples of the featured desert and this night it was cracked pepper ice cream. Â I was surprised how delicious it was. Â And at the end when the bill is served, a little morsel of cake is served which is a very good touch.
The prices are good if you don't mind spending more than a restaurant's desert price. Â I would love to go back for my birthday and get something sweet, rich and close-your-eyes-and-groan kinda desert and then go home and not have anything at my house calling my name.
So after a lovely evening of pho w/ yelpers we proceeded to Sweet to end our night. The bar area is well done and we managed to snag some comfy leather chairs in which to sit and chat. Although the dessert offerings all sounded fabulous,I saw "local cheese plate" and my decision was made. I love cheese and I especially love local cheeses. I was given 7 choices and went with Manchego, Brie, and Cheddar. I know it said that the cheese were from Rochdale, MA but I don't know if that was all or just a few.
When my platter arrived I was presented with 4 slices each of the Manchego and Cheddar. Alas there was only 3 slices of Brie, maybe because it's richer? Along side was 1/2 a sliced pear, guava paste, a small heap of flavored walnuts, and 6 slices of Melba toasts. I think it was fair for $10.95. The cheeses were delicious and the walnuts were definitely a treat. Who doesn't like slightly sweet / slightly salty nuts on their cheese plate?
I only had coffee but the drinks looked delicious. I do wish that the option to have a cupcake was available though. Manyof the desserts on the list would have been just too much after a large dinner.
The service was noticeably slow on our visit -- it may have been due to a newbie server or the packed house. It was a small inconvenience and one that certainly won't keep me from returning, soon.
Worcester has the one up on Boston, at least when it comes to places called Sweet. Sweet in Worcester by FAR is way better than Sweet in Boston.
Why? Well, multiple reasons. Let me explain:
- It's prettier. While the bakery area is a little on the plain side, the lounge is where it's at. Dark lighting, couches, and sleek decorating makes you feel like you are in a totally different store.
- It's cheaper! While I can't remember the exact price of the cupcakes, one Sweet-Worcester cupcake is about 3 Sweet-Boston cupcakes. And even though I didn't try one, Dawn and Amy both assured me they were great.
- They have alcohol! My butterfinger martini was FABULOUS. I felt like I could drink 5 of them, and then regret it in the morning
- Their dessert menu is great. It seems expensive, but for $9.00 you get an amuse (this time it was peppercorn ice cream, which was surprisingly refreshing!) your dessert of choice, and a petit four with your check. This is a great deal considering that many restaurants with desserts can come very close to the $9.00 mark anyway!
I went with the chocolate cake and ice cream. Usually served with earl grey ice cream, but they were out that night, so I settled for regular vanilla. Moist, and flavorful, I found myself not being able to eat all the frosting, it was that decadent (and if you know me, I ALWAYS eat all the frosting). I also snuck a bite of Teri's bread pudding, and WOW it was fantastic!
All the desserts are made fresh to order, to expect to wait, especially if there are a lot of people. But the leather chairs and great company and delicious drinks will make that time fly by. This is definitely a treasure sitting right on Shrewsbury St!
The bar is now open. Â The place is very cute in the back and have nice big comfy chairs. Â I was surprised to see that the cupcakes were not offered on the menu for the dessert bar since this is what I love about Sweet. Â I did have the dessert sampler (shared with a friend) though and was able to try the creme brulee, "french doughnuts" and the hot fudge sundae. Â The creme brulee was very good...nice a creamy and smooth with a good crust. Â The "french doughnuts" are a salty-sweet pastry with chocolate int he middle and comes with a peanut butter caramel dipping sauce. Â This was a nice combination of everything and very tasty. Â The Hot fudge sundae was listed to have jalapeno infused chocolate sauce but I didn't really taste the pepper flavor. Â I also got a glass of Moscato d'Asti which was very good.
The service was slow and the items are a little pricey.
Overall I am still a fan but would probably be more likely to go back for the bakery in the front rather than the bar in the back.
I'm upgrading to 4 stars and I'm prepared to look at it for five the moment the dessert and cocktail bar is built and open.
I've decided that this place has become the standard I am using when reviewing other cupcakes. Â The frosting is always somehow rich and light at the same time, the cakes are always moist, and they always have at least ten flavors (and often the ability to produce more quickly via flavored frosting, etc, if you are willing to wait and they are not busy.)
Okay, so why still only 4 and not 5? Â Because mine are still better, and I arrogantly and selfishly judge all things to the standards of what I, myself, can create.
Seriously... Â I make a point to swing by whenever I am in Worcester and bring them back to my office and those who get them few I bring are quite pleased and those who don't are sad and disappointed and secretly plot to get on my good side before I go again.
