Living in Lancaster, you can walk to so many different places. We have fallen in LOVE with the Taproom since it's inception over 2 years ago. The beer selection changes daily and the food menu is upscale bar food which has significantly been upgraded over that timeframe. The pizza could be a bit better, but the tacos on Tuesday are AWESOME! Also, try the crab mac-n-cheese bites, you won't regret it!
We are mug club members which is a great value and also makes you feel cool when people ask you about your awesome looking mug! The beer is some of the best we've ever had!! And we've tried a LOT of beers! The new Federal Taphouse just opened up in between where we live and the Taproom. We have decided that we still just prefer the small-town, upscale feel of Taproom better. Yeah, it can be a little loud because the acoustics are a bit echoey, and it does get a bit crowded on Friday (probably because of how awesome it is) but that's just because it's the best place in town to hang out and have a World Class micro brew!
Speaking of the micro brews, they tend to run on the IPA heavy side, but have lots of Wheats as well. My favorite beer is the Big Gruesome Choco Peanut Butter Stout and my fiancé loves the BRRAAAAIIINNSSS Pumpkin Ale! They have seasonal beers, so be sure to stop by in the summer for the Pineapple Ale and the fall for their Pumpkin Ale and Stout and ask to mix them into a Pumpkiny Black and Tan deliciousness in your mouth!
Cheers!
This was a neat place! I came here with some family back in May and it was a nice atmosphere. We got their mozzarella sticks and pizza for dinner and they were mighty tasty. However, I was a bit disappointed with their beers. I think we came at the wrong time of year because Springhouse certainly knows how to make dark beers. Their chocolate peanut butter stout is ridiculously good and it alone warrants this place 5 stars. However, we did a flight of all their beers and their other ales just weren't good at all. The IPAs were really bad and their experimental raspberry/jalapeno IPA - just awful. Parking can be a bit of a pain, but that's not a reason not to check this place out. Overall, go there for some great bar food and stick with the chocolate peanut butter stout - it's a keeper!
Review Source:Stopped in before a concert at The Chameleon Club - tried a few samples then enjoyed a pint of the Robot...Pineapple which was excellent - I would rate the beer 5 star - the food was good - nothing outstanding but nothing done wrong. The beer is the thing here. Nice atmosphere - good crowd, excellent bartender who kept her calm with patrons some of whom were not used to micro-brewed beers - but even they were happy at the end of the visit - as I passed them sitting outside at a umbrella'ed table - they were smiling - their Springhouse tastings in front of them - enjoying the adventure away from an under 100 calorie beer which they had walked in wanting. Who knew Lancaster PA had beer like this?! Excellent.
Review Source:As with many microbreweries, they do their beers according to the season. When I went, it must have been IPA /wheat season as that is what the majority of their brews were. I'm not an IPA fan, so please keep that in mind with the review of the beers. I plan on returning in the fall/winter when they have more breakfast stouts.
As always, beers are rated on the pint scale, 0-5 of how many pints I can drink in a night.
Goofy foot summer wheat: light crisp summer wheat. Slight hoppy finish, without overpowering wheat taste. 4 pints.
Cliff Saison: this beer tasted much like an IPA and didn't have the banana sweetness of a typical saison. Not sure if the bartender poured the wrong beer or if this was how it was supposed to taste. 0 pints. .
Diabolical Doctor Wheat: this wheat beer had a pleasant finish of pepper and cilantro. Would pair nicely with Thai food. 4 pints.
Robot Surf Factory: a pineapple IPA. The IPA bitterness was very slight, as was the pineapple taste. If there was more of a pineapple flavor, Â I would have enjoyed this beer much more. 3 pints
Daphnee Saison: This was a typical saison with the banana like finish. 2 pints
Beyond the gates DIPA: A typical double IPA. not my taste 0 pints.
She monster mango: an IPA brewed with mango. Similar to the pineapple IPA. Subtle IPA taste with a slight mango finish. Again, I would have enjoyed it more if the mango was more pronounced. 3 pints. 2 front teeth golden ale: This was perhaps their most original beer. It had a citrus and mineral quality about it which was very similar to crisp Vidal wine. 3 pints
7 gates pale ale: a "milder" version of the beyond the gates. Again, not right for my taste. 0 pints.
What can I say? I love this place. The beer offerings change frequently, which is a good thing. However, if you want something specific, check their website to make sure it's available. Â They often have an interesting experimental beer on tap, like a jalapeno-infused beer or one that has been drafted through the randall. I love the Big Gruesome (the chocolate peanut butter stout), and I think it's probably one of the beers that they're known for. The ambiance here is fine - many say it's hipster-y, but I've always found it to be pretty laid back. The food has really improved recently - I remember when the only food you could get was a not-so-great pizza. Now they have delicious things like loaded hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, and mac n cheese bites. Overall, Springhouse is one of my favorite places in downtown Lancaster.
Review Source:I'm excited to hopefully keep coming back to this place.
The taproom is smaller than I expected, but comfortable. We sat in the bar at the large window with lots of sun coming in - I can imagine it gets hot in the summer as it was quite warm in the spring! Fairly packed, even at like 3pm.
We tried a few beers. The pineapple pale ale was pretty bad to me - too hoppy to be mixed with pineapple. The Diabolical Wit though was really good - not my favorite of the type, but definitely up there. We taste tested a few other beers, but none of those stood out. There is a good variety so you'll find something you'll like.
The food was really a surprise though. The Monster Mozzies are handmade mozzarella sticks and downright AMAZING! The tomato bacon jam is also like heaven - even my tomato sauce hating husband enjoyed it. We also ordered a small cheese plate - which came with our choice of really yummuy local cheeses. Definitely a place to come back to and try more food at.
Taproom is a great place to hangout. The beer is good, not my absolute favorite beer ever, but it's complex and has really interesting flavor. The bar itself thought is just a fantastic place to hangout with friends and banter about whatever. Not only that pretty much everyone there is laid back and really relaxed so it's easy to meet people and talk it up. Since it was my first visit I tired the beer sampler. It's a little daunting to go that on your own. I finished but by the end my taste buds were completely shot from all the complex flavors. And trust me the Springhouse beer is VERY complex stuff.
Review Source:Taproom by Springhouse had quite an interesting selection of beers, so naturally I had to try them all. Â This review, then, is only for the beers. Â
Overall I didn't hate anything. Â The peanut butter stout was not what I expected, but not bad, either. Â I check in every once in awhile to see what new and exciting beers they have on tap. Â It seems there is always a suprise. Â
Definitely worth stopping by to at least sample their beers. Â If I lived closer, I'd probably be by more often. Â And probably with a growler or two.
The Springhouse Taproom, in my humble opinion, has a number of positives going for it, namely the location. Â The bar is located in the heart of Lancaster's downtown, within walking distance of several other watering holes and The Central Market (this could possibly be a negative if you just head to the Central Market in the morning for some produce and get sucked into the bar for a while). Â
I'm also a big fan of the setup. Â While it could get crowded, the bar has, in my opinion, the perfect table to standing room ratio. Â There's several seats outside, as well as the only legitimate shuffleboard table I've been able to find in Lancaster. Â The Taphouse is borderline hipster, which is usually a turnoff to me, but the crowd really isn't and I've never felt talked down to by any of the staff because I can't taste the difference between an IPA and a Lager. Â They've always been courteous and helpful.
On the subject of the beer, it's pretty delicious, and it's weird in a good way. I particularly like the Pumpkin Ale & Chocolate Peanut Butter Stoudt. One downfall: it's really strong. Â I can either start my night here or end it, but could never stay the night, unless I really want to humiliate myself. Â On that note, it's a perfect weeknight and perfect pregame spot. Â I'm not a huge liquor drinker, but they don't have any, which I'm sure would be a turnoff to some.
I have to say before hand that I am a huge fan of the products, some really truly amazing beers. Â This was only my second trip to the taproom itself. Â It was a Sunday evening and it was not that crowded. Â I was at he bar with a few friends and had one pint of Seven Gates, my favorite. Â After that it seemed as though the last thing in the world that the staff behind the bar wanted to do was give me a second beer. Â One of my friends had a similar experience upon entering. Â He could not get anyone's attention to secure a drink for quite sometime. Â The woman behind the bar even swept past and took my empty glass without saying a word. Â I have to say it was kind of surreal and disconcerting. Â We actually left because of this odd situation and went someplace else.
Review Source:Lancaster has a surprising number of  options for breweries - all of them good. But the Springhouse beers easily trump them all. Truly some innovative flavor combinations that sound like they shouldn't work (Peanut Butter & Jelly Beer?) but they all do so try everything - they rotate what is on tap quite often.
Taproom has a great location and good atmosphere. Can get crowded on weekend evenings, but what good bar doesn't?
The beers are delicious, the food is above average, and you can sit outside and enjoy the nicest part of town. Â Enough said. Â But if you're interested to read on:
There's a shuffleboard table, a few TVs, and some unmemorable music playing inside. Â The aesthetics are nice enough, and the full glass facade of the building makes the bar open and inviting.
There are some tables strewn about, and though the food options aren't limited and are quite good, this is more of a "grab something to eat while I drink" place, not vice versa.
The reason to come here is the beer, which is of almost questionably good quality. Â I love it. Â I'm not a beer snob, or even a connoisseur, but I have always been keen to sample and appreciate all types of beer. Â For whatever reason, the beer at Taproom really gets me going. Â It's not for everyone, but if you actually like beer, you will actually like this place. Â
ALERT it will also get you drunk. Â They don't offer any light beers. Â Not even a smidge. Â Lowest alcohol content is around 5.5 and most are above 6, some hilariously so. Â Plus you get a 20oz English pint. Â So you'll be buzzed up; plan accordingly. Â Or don't, I don't care.
I can only give this place 4 stars, however, because they don't have any liquor. Â I'm not sure why, but I assume PA's archaic and nonsensical liquor laws are at work. Â Anyway, the one star deduction stands because sometimes you need a little whiskey, amirite?
I SUGGEST: Â Gate Six Pale Ale; 3 dollar hot dog special on Wednesdays; sitting outside.
I DETEST: Â Lack of Jack.
Coming from San Diego and their craft brewing culture, this place definitely made me feel at home. Â The sampler was a pretty good deal, got to try all of the beers on their menu in about the equivalent of 2 pints. Â Big Gruesome, the chocolate peanut butter stout, was great, and the minty Satan's Bake Sale was pretty memorable too, I would definitely write home about that one. Â All of the beer varieties were pretty creative. Â Also pleasantly surprised by the prosciutto-wrapped figs appetizer, that was probably one of the tastiest appetizers I've ever had. Â This place does get a slight knock though because they were out of bottles, I was hoping to take some beer back with me to the hotel.
I would definitely agree with the other review that said this place had a hipster/trendy vibe, and I noticed nearly half the room had thick beards, what's up with that? Â Is that a reflection of Amish culture in PA?
I sampled one of their brews at the Liberty Taproom in Reading. Rather impressed. Much so, that I took the girl and my Amish loving folks with me to Lancaster to sample more of their selection.
Spring House has the very hipsterish-trendy vibe. The inside of the brewery is very clean and keeps up with the presentation of the rest of the area. And a Zoltar machine? Oh yeah! Awesome.
The guys working behind the bar were very accommodating and friendly as well. They were able to set me up with what I liked and a nice variety to sample. Made the hour plus drive worth it.
The price for Growler refills were kinda steep, but well worth it. I recommend their Stout selection. ESPECIALLY Satans Bake Sale for you lovers of Mint Pattys. Â
I'm gonna stick with 4 stars for now. Would like to sample some food to possibly give it the extra block.
Great location! Its so easy here, you wont leave once entered...
Ive been in the afternoon, not so many people, but i'm sure in the eve/night, its gonna be as chilled as in the afternoon...
If you are up for a beer spontaneously or just wanna have one of those delicious hot dogs, make your way up here...
Great beers! Unique & inspired. The only other place I know making beers in this realm is Prism in N. Wales Montgomery Co. Taproom is superior however. Last year (I make an annual summer trip to Lancaster for new beer & other goodies) it was a PB& J brew; yesterday it was Braaiiins!, a superbly crafted Pumpkin ale. I believe it was unfiltered. Had a nice caramel- nutmeg nose and pleasant bitter finish. This is like a meal in a glass. Beyond the Gates DIPA is also very good. My only regret was it was too early in the day to do a flight, plus I only had one growler with me and a friend who doesn't drink. Would have liked to taste the Cosmic Monster Quad (which sounds amazing)& the Pineapple Pale Ale. Â
Conveniently located next to Central Market(another gem), with a nice industrial- like atmosphere. Thank you for opening at 11:00 on a Friday morn as I was able to get a growler of some really special stuff to take home.Cannot comment on food as I haven't tried any.
I've been here several times and definately enjoy their beers. However it is a bit confusing as to the service if your not sitting at the bar. It is seat yourself (although not posted) and apparently there is no service to the tables. We did order food and that was quite the disapointment. Simple hot dog wrapped in bacon (which they forgot) topped with cole slaw. It took over 20 minutes to get, for a hot dog and chips. If that's the best they can do with food then they should just do away with it and stick to beer. If you are sitting at a table and you go up to get your next beer it's like they totally ignor you. Very odd and this has happened everytime we've stopped in.
I do love what they do with the hop rocket and the "one off's". Very quality beer and worth the trip.
The beer out weighs  the service.....
This place has the BEST beers anywhere in central PA. The depth of flavor and innovative combinations is what keeps us coming back again and again. I rave to my friends and co-workers about the Mango IPA and the Braiinnns Pumpkin Ale is to die for. The Taproom has a pretty great variety and always rotating flavors so there is something for everyone. Â
All of the employees are very friendly and the atmosphere is fun. I am a fan!
Stopped here after a trip to Central Market (just steps away) and really enjoyed the beers! In fact, my hubby and I liked the beers so much we asked if they had any other locations - unfortunately this location is the one and only. We didn't try any food but what we saw coming out of the kitchen looked good. We also had a fun time playing shuffleboard!
Review Source:Beer is awesome here... A great place. The only thing we DON'T like is that their menu changed, now that Carr's is no longer cooking for them. If you are vegetarian, don't eat there. Hot dogs are not my preference when enjoying one or two of their crafted beers. Go for the beer, NOT the food.
Review Source:Only had one beer, the chocolate peanut butter stout. Â I really enjoyed the beer, it tasted extremely fresh too. Â The staff were very friendly, busier than I expected at 2:00 in the afternoon but still had plenty of seating. Â Since I couldn't find prices anywhere online, it was $5.75 for a glass of the chocolate peanut butter stout, not cheap, but certainly not a rip off after you taste how good it is. Â I don't know for sure, but it seemed to be non-smoking too, a big plus for me. Â I really liked the space it was in, big glass windows facing the street allowing for plenty of light coming in.
Review Source:The beers they actually had on tap at the Spring House Brewing Company in Lancaster, PA (lovely city, I might add) differed a bit when I visited than their website. I must assume they rotate some beers and so I cannot guarantee the availab...ility of anything described here.
That is too bad, because two of the beers I had here were simply superb. The more unusual (indeed, one of the most unusual I have ever had) is the Peanut Butter Chocolate Stout. Does the sound of it make you cringe a bit? It should not. The aroma is a delicious blend of PB and chocolate and a it has a wonderful taste to match. It was hard not to just order more of this and I will never, never be satisfied with a Reese's cup again. At 8.5% abv, it packs a pretty nice wallop, too.
The other standout was the seasonal Braaaiiins Pumpkin Ale (there was some inconsistency on the two chalkboards as to the number of 'a's and 'i's in the name, but any reader so lacking in cognitive faculties as to not be able to figure out which beer this is at the actual brewery itself deserves to go thirsty). With a sweet smell and darker copper color, its 8.0% abv goes down without the slightest 'alcohol' taste to it. Pumpkin ales are a standard at craft breweries and this one is one of the better ones I have had.
The Seven Gates Pale Ale has a nice citrusy smell and, as it was actually the first beer I had here, started things off on the right foot. The taste is a wee bit too bitter for me, which was a small disappointment for me after the great smell. But still, overall, a winner. The Mango IPA has both the color and smell of its eponymous fruit with a taste just sweet enough to appreciate the flavor of that mango. It also has a nice hoppy aftertaste.
The Diabolical Doctor Wit is a bit substandard compared to the other beers at this place. It is nothing noteworthy and a better wheat beer would be easy to find. Similarly, Two Front Teeth Belgian-style saison has a nice fruity smell due to the cherries added in the brewing process, though it also has a bit of a flat taste. Too bad. At 9.7% abv, one could really get hammered on this stuff if the taste were more up to snuff.
In all, not a bad way to spend a few hours in beautiful Lancaster. As for the food? Well, go to the Neptune Diner down the street instead.
This modern light-filled downtown beer bar is across the street from the newspaper building and right in the heart of downtown, also located in a cool cluster of independent stores in an old building, fun to walk through. Â The huge windows look out onto the Central Market building. Â Lancaster has done a great job of preserving and using its historic buildings.
I wanted to visit after hearing about their fringe beers, which did not disappoint me, though the standards are of very high quality too. Â The brewery for the beer is outside Lancaster in Conestoga. Â It is great to drink beer where there are no boring corporate choices, only well-crafted and creative local ones.
It is not really sportsbar-ish, though the tvs and sports were on. Â No fries on the menu, so nothing for plant-based eaters but some hummus, and vegans get plenty of hummus and don't feel like paying for it. Â We were fine just enjoying the beer. Â I ordered a sampler of 5 tastes for $6.50, and the taster glasses were like half a beer, very generous. Â So 5 of them was more than enough for us to split. Â
I chose the Mango IPA, the Chocolate Peanut Butter Stout, and the pumpkin ale, and he finished the choices with a Belgian Wit and another (this one high-abv) rich Belgian. Â I am less into the Belgians but have to admit I freaking loved them here. Â Fruit beers can get boring and be too girly, but the idea of mango in an IPA was just wonderful and not overpowering. Â I will recommend the stout to a friend who is crazy for the Southern Tier Creme Brulee, though it smelled sweeter than it tasted. Â The pumpkin ale (called Brains) was toward the pumpkin pie flavor I prefer in fall brews.
Music is great, the bartenders get randy, and the beer is good. Â Stick with the staples such as Coffee Stout and Seven Gates. Â Don't bother with the food, but play shuffleboard.
The vibe is very relaxed and granola. Â You know if they are there they like good beer and are willing to talk about it.
I've liked the Springhouse beers for a while so my wife and I were anxious to try the new Taproom. Â We were not disappointed. Â This is a great location. Â If you grab one of the bar seats in front, it is a great place to sit and watch people walking on the sidewalk (what can I say, I'm a big fan of people watching). Â
The beers are way "outside the box". Â During our visit, they had the Peanut Butter Chocolate Stout, Guava Ale, and the Maple Bacon Porter. Â I love the creative thinking! Â All 3 of these beers were solid although some could only be consumed in small doses (i.e. - PBC Stout). Â My wife ordered the flight and if you've never been introduced to Springhouse, this is the way to go. Â It consists of your choice of 5 beers served in small glasses. Â This gives you a chance to try several different styles. Â I started with the Guava Ale (tart and a good warm weather beer) and finished with the Peanut Butter Chocolate Stout (I think this should be served in a glass smaller than a pint, it is too sweet for large consumption).
I like the decor. Â It seems to cater to a younger crowd with the paint scheme but I'm told this was done by a local painting company. Â I believe this because I saw several employees of the paint company enjoying lunch on the day we went. Â
The flight is served on vintage beer trays. Â This was cool. Â I collect these trays and I love the fact that someone is using them for their intended purpose (although I never would use any from my collection for this).
If I had one critique, the food is subpar. Â I think it is prepared by the restaurant that is behind the Taproom. Â My wife had the Veggie Quesadilla and I had the Pizza with beef tips and blue cheese. Â Both were just ok.
P.S. Â I attached a picture of my wife's flight served on a vintage beer tray.
Loved the taproom. Beers that quickly rotate with good quality. There's a tendency toward the fringe beers, still not enough to compromise enjoyment of the pint.
Food was excellent, good chili and nice wing/ribs.
Best brewery in Lancaster. I want to come back and play some shuffleboard!
Since it's official opening I have visited the taproom four times. This place is a welcome addition to the Lancaster drinking scene. Very recently they greatly improved their menu by engaging Carr's restaurant to provide the requisite base for the beverages. Now to the beer:
This stuf is pretty good. The 7gates pale ale probably comes as quite a sensory shock to people expecting a "light" beer to match its hue. Despite it being usually the lowest beer in alcohol content on tap (clocking in around 5.5%); it is steeper than most drinking novices expect. Be careful, because the imperial pints go down much too easily, next thing you know you've drank four and you're much funnier than you friends ever knew. Anyway, in addition to their pale ale, they usually have a at least four other beers on tap. Over the weekend they  were serving: Atomic Raygun (imperial red ale) which was very good, except I remember I liked it a lot more last year, Beyond the Gates (double IPA) best beer going, Planet Bean stout, excellent coffee stout, and Wet Paint (guava-based saison) very tasty and inventive.
If I remember correctly they have ten taps, but only brew between 4-6 beers themselves. Months ago when the Taproom was under construction their was scuttlebutt that other brews would be featured. This would be alright by me. As much as I like Springhouse, they suffer from redundancy and diminishing marginal returns. Their beer is very good and distinctive. As much as I like it, I can only drink so many Atomic Rayguns. If two or three outside brews were introduced, this place will thrive.
One more thing...shuffleboard is great, however other patrons will discard their jackets and belongings on the table during games.
