Great authentic Mexican food with prompt courteous service.  We were only one of 4 tables seated the night we went, and only one of 2 tables that didn't speak Spanish as our native tongue.......and it's the first "Mexican" restaurant that I've been to that served Mexicans or Mexican Americans!  I'll be back.

I've been to El Maguey time and time again.  Big portions at great prices. The service is good and food tasty.  I'll be back soon!

El Maguey has become my go-to Mexican restaurant. What really keeps me coming back is the delicious carnitas - tender and delicious. I prefer to get it in taco form. It's really the best I've had. I also like to get the lunch special #5 (available all day) which has two tacos and a "small" burrito. You can get tacos "mexican style" with onion, cilantro and a lime, or "supreme" with lettuce, tomato and sour cream. I prefer mexican style. The supreme is good too, but the generous amount of toppings can overwhelm the taste of the meat. I tend to get grilled chicken in my burritos, which are served with a mild verde sauce and queso.

There are more than just tacos and burritos. they have a large menu with lots of good stuff. They also have horchata and flavored waters (like pineapple and mango) to drink.

    oh yeah - fresh chips!

All good stuff. This place is definitely worth a try.

This place is great but it used to be better. I'm updating my former 5 star review because I have now had three experiences where I ordered lengua tacos and the meat was dry and tough.

Look, just do yourself a favor and order a chorizo burrito and get the chunky guacamole to dip your chips in.

    Thank me later.

    This'll be a short one.

Our favorite tattoo artist knows Lizz C. and I love good, real Mexican food, so he'd told us about this place and of course we HAD to go and check it out.

We were NOT disappointed!  They have the proper non-gringo stuff on the menu to let you know they're serious.  (In this case, lengua and tripa!)  They also make their own tortillas, and they are very, very good.

Lizz doesn't eat corn or wheat very often, so she ordered 3 tacos meat-only; they didn't even bat an eye. Was no big deal.  I ordered carne asada - one of my "acid tests" for a Mexican place.  We also ordered some guacamole.

The guac is insanely good.  Very chunky, definitely fresh-made, and just very, very good.  Wow.

The house-made tortillas are just awesome - a really nice touch and one you don't see at many places anymore.

My carne asada was, well, perfect, as were the accompanying rice and beans.   I'll let Lizz comment on her tacos-meat-only when she gets around to her review.

We'll be back; this is a very, very good Mexican restaurant - perhaps the New Best in Lafayette!

Yum! Great guacamole, salsa as well. Heard about the massive size of their burritos & great value. We did dine in, lunch specials were great deal for the money & quality. The service was good, a little slow to bring our check, but very friendly, appears better than in previous reviews. Will for sure go there again. Much better speed and friendlier than some of the better known places in town. I gave 4 stars because some of their sides, ex: queso, guac. was a little pricey, but overall was very good & will for sure visit here again! Great little local place to visit if you're in the area that is affordable & authentic.

A friend and I were looking for somewhere new to try, and ended up at Taqueria El Maguey. I was kind of skeptical when I pulled up, because as another reviewer mentioned, it's in an old KFC building--and it's pretty obvious. It's very cramped inside, and because we went at noon, the place was really hectic. Servers were running everywhere and pretty much every table was filled.

Once we sat down, we got chips and salsa right away. Someone brought our drinks quickly and took our order. The food came out really quickly. I ordered the taco special--two tacos, your choice of meat, with beans and rice for $5.59. Not bad! The food was a little bland but they have hot sauce on the table for you to spice it up. The tortillas were really good too. We ordered a small bowl of guacamole for $2.50, going with the chunky kind, and it was AMAZING. I have a new favorite guacamole.

I couldn't even finish my lunch. The food was really good and really filling, and the service was great (though a little harried). I think next time I'll force myself to slow down on the chips and guacamole (ha, ha, ha) so I can finish my lunch...

I have never seen burritos the size of bongo before.  Oh, it tasted great, too.

I haven't had as bad of service for lunch as others have had, but I agree that the service is a bit suspect. It would not keep me from eating there though. The food is plentiful and is as good as any Mexican you will find in Lafayette. The Burritos Texicano is, aside from being way too big to finish, is outstanding. This is quickly becoming an office lunch favorite!

I agree with the Tiffany P.'s review.  My husband ordered a chicken burrito and it was as long as his forearm--no joke.  He only ate half and I even had 5 or 6 bites.   I had two tacos, one beef and one chicken.  They were very good and very authentic.  The fresh cilantro is great and I added authentic mexican cheese to mine.  It was very good and I would think 2 or 3 tacos is enough for a meal with some chips and they were like $1.70 each (cheaper than some of the stuff at Taco Bell!).

The service was strange--we too had to go see about getting drink refills.  The boy who helps kept talking to us about "can you believe they won't even help me do this" or whatever--and the waitress was waiting on her boyfriend and sitting down to talk with him.

I would totally go again though.  Improve the service and it will be a 4 or 5 star place for authentic and inexpensive Mexican fare.

This is probably the newest Mexican restaurant in the Lafayette area, and they definitely serve a more authentic fare.

As a warning, the burritos are insanely large, and depending on what you order, they can be very spicy as well.  On the menu, only chicken, steak, and shrimp are listed as the protein options for the burritos, but my boyfriend was able to order a chorizo burrito with no problem.

I had the fajitas el maguey, and I'm pretty sure I could make 4 complete meals out of the dish.  The portions are very generous and a fantastic value.

The only reason why I refrained from giving them 4 stars was because the service is not very good.  The waitresses are rather inattentive, and we had to go up to the register to ask for our waters to be refilled.  That being said, you can totally bypass the bad service by ordering to go, which I highly recommend because the food is very tasty.
