The butter chicken is pretty awesome but the customer service is horrendous!!!!!! Horrendous!!! The delivery took over an hour and a half. Had to call like 10 times to get an answer. Then when i got the food, it was cold, and didn't give me the naan that was supposed to come free with the meal. When I politely called for them to fix it, the guy went off on me. I told him it was false advertising to say something comes free with the order on B-town Menus and not give it. Not only did he yell at me, but he called me back when i hung up to yell at me some more!!! Worst Customer Service EVER!!!!!!!!
Review Source:very good. food is superb. don't expect great service on fourth street; i usually stick to carry out, but the few occasions upon which i have had the pleasure of dining in taste of india (during off peak hours, and if you care about a buffet you shouldn't be reading reviews anyhow), it has always been just that. a pleasure.
Review Source:I've been here for the lunch buffet several times. The food is OK--Indian is not my favorite, but it is several of my friend's favorite. The service is usually decent, but the restaurant can get a little hectic.
I find the options at the buffet to be a little limiting. You only go several times and you've pretty much experienced everything they have to offer. The restaurant is pretty noisy at this time too and they really really pack in as many people as they can. While the food taste decent, I have had some...indigestion issues...after eating here several times. I'm not sure if it's the fact that I don't eat this food often or that the amount of cream in some of the options is incredibly upsetting.
For their buffet, there really isn't much description for what you're eating (if you don't know what the dishes are already) which I find to be a disadvantage as well. It would be difficult to bring someone who has dietary restrictions to the buffet for that reason.
Lastly, I find it to be a little expensive. The buffet is $9.10 currently (incl. tax). Given the limited options, it's not that great of a deal. They do have a frequent flyer card where after so many buffets you get one free...but I'm not sure I'll make it. It's not my favorite place and I'm not sure I'd actively seek this place out if it weren't for my friends.
There are some other buffets in town that are better priced with some better options in my opinion. If you're a fan of Indian food though, I'm sure you'll like it.
I have never had an experience where a server first of all takes a wrong order and then upon requesting to reverse the order argues with the customer. Not only that, the server ends up saying 'don't bullshit with me'.
This is considered one of the best indian restaurants in Bloomington but it seriously needs to buckle up and learn to treat customers with respect.
Decent Indian food. I've ordered delivery from here a couple times. I usually get stuck picking what to get given I'm Brown and my dining partner tends to not be.
I've had some yummy dishes: Chicken korma, Bhindi ... and some not so yummy dishes: Aloo gobi. Standard naan, rice, the usuals accompany these entrees.
I'll keep trying it because sometimes I get homesick of my mom's cooking and way too lazy to cook it, and need some Indian in my life.
I absolutely love Taste of India! This is the place that spawned my love for Indian food, and reignited my passion for spicy food. All their dishes are spiced according to customer preference, and 90% of the time, they hit it spot on, though I have had one or two "mediums" that were substantially less spicy than I am used to. The masala, curry, butter chicken, naan, korma...these are a few of my favorite things, and I highly recommend the lunch buffet which normally has most of, if not all of those items.
Review Source:Had dinner here the other night, a Sunday. Â It was crowded but we were seated quickly. Â If you are a party of 2 and the place is busy, be prepared to sit at one of the smallest tables known to humankind. Â The food was very good, although they would do well to provide some papadum while you wait (the wait was a little long), as most Indian restaurants (that I frequent) do. Â I was very impressed with my bhindi masala. Â Most of the service was fine or even good. Â However, I was startled when one of the waiters began Windexing a table adjacent to us while we were eating and the chemical smell was very noticeable. Â I literally can't remember the last time I've seen that happen in a restaurant. Â The same waiter, when bringing out our check and my take-home box (it's do-it-yourself) was carrying the check holder (probably pretty dirty by the end of the night) pressed INTO the inside of the box. Â I don't know if he was new or what, but he seemed not to have a grasp of good hygiene in food service.
Review Source:Great yelp coupon. $20 bucks buys you 40 bucks worth of food and drink...and tip if anything is left over.
Service is atrocious! I'm no prima-donna by any stretch, but we were sat and not talked to for 10 minutes. It was a Friday night but not super busy. When we finally did see the waiter, he seemed put out that we had questions. Maybe it was a good thing he only came by 3 times during our visit. (order, food, check)
The food was average at best. Americanized or not, Lamb Tikki Masala is my go to reference Indian meal. I've had it in at least 25 restaurants all over the country. This one was squarely in the bottom. I've had tastier buffet masalas.
Will I return? Yep. Why? It's probably the best Indian in town, the beer selection is actually decent (2-hearted, Alpha King, Dragonfly, Bell's Porter plus your standard Indian piss water) and the $20 yelp deal is cheap for a quick fix
This is one of my new favorites. The staff is nice and the food is great! If you're wondering what to order because you've never had Indian food or perhaps you've accidentally ordered something that you didn't like, here are my recommendations! My boyfriend swore he didn't like India food until I ordered for him! Now he's addicted! (BTW, their lamb is amazing!)
APPETIZER:
aloo naan - Naan filled with spiced potatoes
or
keema naan - Â Naan stuffed with ground lamb and
spices. * 2.95
MAIN DISH:
lamb biryani - Basmati rice cooked with boneless
lamb, vegetables, nuts, and raisins.
or
lamb kadahi - Lamb sautéed with onions, green
peppers, tomatoes, and spices.
or
Chicken tikka - Succulent cubes of chicken breast,
subtly marinated in yogurt and specially blended
spices and broiled in the Tandoor
(If you're used to Indian food and you don't mind the more saucy dishes, I recommend Lamb Saag as well).
I generally go to Amol India, but they were closed one day, and I was really jonesing for Indian so I checked this place out. Â Was intrigued to see they had a selection of southern Indian cuisine that Amol doesn't offer. Â I tried the chili paneer masala dosa. Â This was my first time trying dosa, so I don't really have anything to compare it to, but it was very tasty and just the right amount of heat. Â The layout of the restaurant is open so it's quite a bit louder than Amol, but not horribly so. Â If I want Northern Indian fare, I'll probably stick to Amol, but for Southern food Taste of India is a great choice.
Review Source:I came here with some friends a couple of weeks ago and loved it. Â The food was tasty, and had just the right spice. Â The portions are large, which is always great for leftovers. Â I had the palak paneer, which is spinach and homemade cheese. Â It was creamy, spicy and full of flavor. Â The naan bread is huge, so don't order two!
I used a yelp deal to get $40 worth of food for $20. Â Check to see if that deal is still active because it is well worth it!
Read Mona and Sarah W's reviews. They're salient here. And let me explain the three stars, because they represent a composite, rather than individual descriptions, which are important:
Service: 4, maybe 5 stars. Friendly, fast, helpful, but forgot one of our items until we reminded them twice
Menu and selections: A decided 5 as the menu is comparatively vast, lots of stuff here from all over India. Many, many choices. I don't know about the buffet as I haven't tried it yet.
Food quality: 2-4 stars. Here's where it's mercurial. My dish was ok, but tasted like it had been in a pot for a while (vegetable paneer), but the onion/cheese naan was pretty good. My partner's dish was good, but not memorable and very nicely seasoned.
The price: A little bit high for the area, but not much. The buffet might represent a better value.
I'll go here again to sample more items. This is a vegetarian-friendly place, but also caters to omnivores very well (judged by the selection of menu items).
A caveat: I went there because of a free entree for my birthday sort of deal. I am still not sure how they knew my birthday month, as it's not here, and they may be "playing" Yelp elites. Doesn't matter; my opinion is the same.
OK, this place was great! Good food and lots of it. Staff was very friendly and we even took advantage of their Yelp deal, $20.00 for $40.00 worth of food. Waitress was very nice and saw me paying for the deal on my phone and even gave us a running total on our order and suggested things to get us close to the $40.00 mark.
I hear they have a great lunch buffet, I have not been yet. For Indian food in town this is the place to go.
The food is very good, my wife & I enjoyed it very much. Â The chili naan was especially tasty, as were our entrees.
I was less appreciative of the indifferent service - the place was empty when we came in, yet we had to stand around for a few minutes before being noticed by the staff congregated at the bar. Â When it came time for the check, I was slightly annoyed by the 'cash only' policy which accompanied the gift certificate we used. Â If you are going to accept credit cards for some transactions, why not all?
Best Indian food and experience in town, hands down!
I have been here a few times and the food is always incredible and the service is always very good. I have been to a couple of other Indian places in town but this one wins!
If you want authentic tasty Indian food, skip the others and go to Taste of India.
Hmm. I have mixed feelings about Taste of India. In terms of the food, I'd say that it is far and away the best Indian restaurant in Bloomington. The lunch buffet is very good (especially when it includes the outrageous Mango pudding), and food ordered off the menu has been even better. On the menu I would specifically recommend the Bhindi Masala and the Baingain Barta, both vegetarian and both very good.
The mixed feelings come in when I begin to think about the service, which is remarkably and reliably unfriendly and rude. I don't expect coddling, but I do expect friendly and helpful service. It's actually really a shame that it is so bad or I would eat there more often. Hopefully they'll improve or I might actually go back to Shanti.
I've been here twice and haven't been impressed yet. I've had the vegetable korma, the dosa, paneer and aloo gobi...none of which were meals I'd rave about.
The korma was too sweet, the paneer lacked any spice and the aloo gobi was bland. The food is very overpriced as well.
Service is okay- I had 1 bad experience with what seemed to be the owner.
Personally, I like Amol India better.
We went here for lunch on Saturday and the service was quite friendly. Â The buffet was decent but not the best Indian buffet I've ever had. Â I did hear that the dinners are better so I'd definitely give this place a shot again. Â Also, they give you a discount if you pay in cash and an even larger discount if you're a IU student who pays in cash. Â Not a bad deal!!
Review Source:Indian buffet! Yum! I am always a fan of Indian lunch buffets, and this place is no exception.
I have been here now on multiple occasions, and have had consistently good food and service. The food is fresh and flavorful-- nothing sketchy about this buffet! Plus, they have frequent diner cards-- Free meals for regulars!
If Taste of India wanted to bump up to 5 stars in my book, they would expand their dessert offerings for the buffet (usually there are only one or 2 choices out) and perhaps offer small complimentary mango lassi cups to patrons-- two amazing perks that other Indian restaurants have provided me in the past that won over my heart.
Just passing through town. Had a craving for Indian food in Indiana. Go figure. Drove from the hotel to the nice little downtown area. Nice late summer/early fall cool/warm weather. Perfect for comfort food.
Taste of India fit the bill. I ordered a Chicken Curry, as it is the go-to/default dish that is potentially the true test of an Indian restaurant. I noticed on the menu that they will spice all meals according to the customer's request. I like that. I ordered the CC - hot. It was. It was good. It was above average. I also ordered samosas. They were good too.
Overall, with high expectations, as usual, Taste of India did a good job with their offerings. This restaurant is recommended.
I went here a couple of times and I would give the lamb briyani a thumbs up, however, I do not think they are consistent with their food. The four occasions I came here, the briyani was of different level of spiciness even though I had ordered a level 3 (out of 5) and on the last occasion I went there, my friends had ordered some garlic naan and it was not well cooked, the garlic was a tad bit too raw.
Overall, I love the food but I wished that they could be more consistent in the quality of it :)
This is one of my favorite restaurants in town. It's hard to choose a favorite though.
I've lived in Bloomington for many years, and enjoy all the local food joints.
The staff at Taste of India is great and the food is always great.
Some people say they're bland, but I don't think they overly salt the food. It is definitely heavily spiced. Just add some salt if you think it's too bland.
I've had their Goat, Lamb, Chicken, Paneer and Salmon, and they've always been great. I suggest the Mataar Paneer, Salmon Tandoori or the Lamb Korma. The Goat Curry is also great - the meat just falls of the bone and melts in your mouth. And don't forget the Samosa's and butter naan.
The prices are also less than the other Indian places in town. The last time I went, my wife and I had Samosa's, Naan and two entries and the bill was around 31$. I just finished my leftovers for lunch.
Another Yelper and I went here on a cold January Sunday at 11 a.m. Â For most places serving a buffet lunch the picking would be slim at 11 a.m. when the first customers walked through the doorway, but we found the steam table fully loaded.
Tastes were good, but nothing very spicy, and I was craving a swollen tongue experience. Â The other drawback was the food, while fresh looking, was not piping hot, especially the tandoori chicken. Â The tandoori chicken was exclusively drumsticks, not a thigh to be seen except on the girl at the next table. Â On the upside, the restaurant was clean, the plates were clean, and the service, such as it is at a buffet, was fast.
The total for two at the lunch buffet, with tap water to drink was $18.19 which included tax.
Taste of India is a good addition to Bloomington restaurants. It drove down the (outrageous) prices at the other Indian places downtown. for lunch it's about what you'd expect from a lunch buffet. It's cheap by comparison with a lot of tasty options and all the naan you want. You can order off the menu but there is a $10 minimum per person if you want something else. For dinner I really love this place. The staff is nice and attentive. The food is great with a lot of seemingly authentic meat and vegetarian options. They'll give you as much rice as you want so for me it's enough to split one curry between two people or two between three with a naan or two. This keeps the price down since the dishes are not exactly cheap (but not too expensive).
Review Source:Taste of India is a new restaurant located near the fire station on 4th street. I've gotten takeout and tried the lunch buffet ($8.50ish). The food was tasty enough, they had curries, salad, naan, plus lots of chicken and vegetarian dishes. The buffet is as classy as a buffet can be and everything was very clean. We ate out on the large patio and service was very attentive, our water glasses stayed full. The restaurant became rather crowded around noon, so it seems as though people like this place.
The best thing about this Taste of India is that they offer fast delivery! Oh and the  mango shake/lassis are fabulous and cheap.
