Found within a crowded shopping complex and sandwiched between two popular national chain stores is this delightful find for good Indian cuisine in the KOP area.
Typically I prefer to order a la carte when in an Indian restaurant, but today I was forced to go buffet during lunch. There was no option for a la carte, which is reason for 1-star reduction. In retrospect, I'm glad the buffet was the only option because of the chance to try a wide assortment of dishes and flavors. For hot dishes, they featured 10-12 choices including the typical tikka masala, saag paneer, biryani and curries. Their rice and naan were on par or better than most I've had at other sites. The salad bar was about as extensive as I've seen in an Indian restaurant. They had mulligatawny, a rare find in many buffets. And they even feature a dessert station that included 5 choices - three of which were new to me - including a fan fave in gulab jaman. All of this allowed me to choose broadly... leave just as broadly after clearly overeating. But when the food is that tasty, can you blame a guy??
The service was attentive, albeit limited to quick empty plate removal and refills of water. I'd definitely recommend this spot for a quick lunch. Hopefully, I'll be able to try their dinner (and go a la carte) on my next excursion.
I was craving Indian. My boyfriend loves Indian food and took me to a joint in Trooper. I wasn't too fond of that place and we figured we would give this one a try. The poppadoms were delicious as well as all the chutneys. The lamb samosas were amazing. We had the chicken tikka masala.
Sauce was good. I didn't like the chicken breast... wish they would have used thigh meat. Very very laid back service. I will most likely come back to try their other dishes :)
Great take out food. Terrible take out service.
I've never dined there. Only take out. Food is outstanding.
Problem is with take out experience. They don't bother tracking your name or phone number.
So if you are not the only take out order expect 20 questions. Did you order blah, blah, blah. What about blah, blah, blah. If you are the person picking up but say your spouse ordered, forget about it. If you can't identify the order, they resort to "is it the small order or big order". Lol. As if you are privy the size of your order relative to that of others! Â
It's quirky once or twice. Aggregating the third or fourth time. After that, you'll just stop ordering from there.
Good luck you kooky dudes! Â It's not that hard to track orders by name or telephone number!
I am very critical about Indian restaurants, because I can cook whatever the food served. I've been here twice and I really find the buffet disappointing.
I believe it is all about the quantity and not the quality. The samosas were day old and they have a very weird dish called chicken dhaal. Why would you wanna put chicken in dhaal? I haven't tasted dinner here, but I believe it might be the same. I would avoid this place.
This place is decent, but nothing special. My family came here a lot when I was growing up- it's the main place to get Indian food in the Devon/Berwyn area. I tried the buffet a few times for lunch and felt like the food had been sitting out for a little too long- the tandoori chicken was flavorful but too salty and dry, and the gulab jamun was too sweet and syrupy for my taste. My favorite has always been the chana masala with a side of poori and a mango lassi. However, if you ask for your food to be made mild, they tend to forget, which is a nuisance for people with hypersensitive taste buds like me. What I don't like about this place in general is the decor- it's dark and has little ambience, and is always very, very cold (bring a sweater, especially in the summer). The service is totally lackluster- it's pretty slow and the people aren't warm or engaged at all. It can be pretty hard to get your waiter's attention if you need anything, because they spend a lot of time in the kitchen. The food is pretty good, but the experience of coming here isn't enjoyable.
Review Source:Very good food, always packed for lunch buffet. A nice change of pace from Chinnar Buffet 1/2 mi away. Does not have quite the cozy atmosphere of the competing buffet. Chicken Tikka was excellent, and some fun stewed Goat! yay. Where do you ever see that? at a buffet no less. Luckily I knew there would be bone shards, apparently a common thing with goat. I'm told these are the same folks who run the Indian Grocery + Gas on 202 in King of Prussia [by the Red Lobster] which is where i often buy fun exotic groceries--bought a few pounds of goat meat once. Not for the faint of heart.
Clearly a very popular place, and for good reason.
The best Carrot Halwa(pudding) I have eaten in the US.
I have only been here for the buffet, so not sure about the service.
The chole(chick peas) is pretty close to one of the best I have ever had as well.
My wife swears by the chicken tikka masala.
The buffet is awesome and totally worth the money you pay for it.
Co-workers and I have been going to the lunch buffet once every month or two for years and love it! Â Now, I'm not too well versed in Indian food, so don't have much to go on. Â But, I am an experienced "eater", if you will, and this place has great eats! Â Favs are the naan, chicken tikka masala and sagg paneer (equates to spiced creamed spinach in my book). Â Also love the mango yogurt drink and milk tea. Â I scoffed at the idea of a buffet at first, but this one is worth your while. It's a great way to try a lot of different types of Indian food without emptying your pocketbook or ordering something that you wish you had only sampled before committing. It's very busy here at lunch during the week- the service on plate clearings, water, and keeping the buffet well stocked is great.
Review Source:Oh man. I really hate writing these kind of reviews - especially for smaller businesses trying to make it in this world - but I also believe if you are going to make it, you have to do what you do and do it well.
We called at 7:45 and asked if we made it by 8:30, could they serve us. They said yes, they do not close until 9. We arrived at 8:20 and they refused to seat us. Said they were closing. The place had one other table and I am guessing they just wanted to leave - but we made a special trip after working all day and were starving.
They finally relented and sat us. We tried to be really nice and be good customers and order quickly, etc. They continued to be unfriendly.
The food was mediocre and being a vegetarian, I ordered the chile paneer dish - which I will admit was good, but I ended up really sick later on that night. I really do have this feeling that it was cross contaminated with the lamb and chicken dishes my friends ordered - which I know can happen, but it would be great if kitchens, especially ethnic ones that tout vegetarian dishes, would be more aware of this issue.
The Naan basket, which is my favorite part of eating Indian, was soggy and not very flavorful.
All and all, we didn't have a good time and will not be going back when we are in town for work next.
This place has a solid lunch buffet with some nice touches, such as the poori that were available alongside that Indian buffet staple, naan, on my last visit. When I come here I always get the buffet for two, to go, and the guys in the front are most accomodating, offering additional packaging if I need it, and naan fresh from the kitchen and wrapped in tin foil. There are usually plenty of veggie dishes to choose from, and they don't back off on the heat. Flavorful, well prepared food, that, while it probably won't win any awards, always satisfies.
Review Source:I dined here for the lunch buffet, and while the service is at best brusque, it's a buffet, so you don't need much. Â Although I was surprised I wasn't even offered a beverage.
However, the food here is the best Indian cuisine I have seen on the main line! Â The goat curry is a must, and by the time I got to it shortly after 1pm, it was mostly gone. Â The dishes seem quite fresh, well-seasoned and don't taste like it's the third day they have been reheated. Â The naan was kind of gummy but that's my only complaint. Â Probably because it had been lingering too close to the steam from the other dishes.
Even the rice is nicely seasoned, with an occasional bay leaf sticking out of it. Â (I didn't eat the bay leaf) Â The paneer was wonderful.
Best Indian I have had in a looong time.
Well a glutton for punishment I am - I decided to get take out this time. Â Â Again, I have to say that I think it is a little over priced. Â Portions were OK - and I was happy to get the all of the condiments in little take away boxes. Â Â Food was ready when they said it would be and it was still hot when I got back. Â Cooks knife skills are terribly lacking - different sized cuts of peppers and onions in the Chicken Shishlak, I think this also leads to my just OK rating for the price. Â Â The Keema Samosa was great! Wonderful pastry and lots of nice lamb filling. Â Its close, Ill probably go back, and Ill definitely do take out rather than dine in.
Review Source:This place is getting the coveted upgrade from me after my last experience here. Â
It's funny with these Indian buffets. Â Some places just strike out on occasion. Â I've had a meal here in the past that I haven't liked. Â And I've still had better overall experiences with other Indian places. Â
But if they continue to be as good as the last time I had them, which was this past week, they will be among my recommended places. Â They made a chicken kabob dish this week that was out of this world. Â The chicken curry had excellent flavor. Â The tandoori chicken had a smoky quality to it that I had not tasted before in Indian cuisine, but it worked for me. Â They won me over again. Â
Mango juice on the buffet instead of mango lassi on this day... well, they can't be perfect. Â I love my mango lassi. Â But it's still not bad. Â
I do suppose that the jury is still out on whether they are consistent. Â But at least now, I can say I've had more good meals here than not so good. Â And the consistency of reviews from others has shown me that maybe they turned it around. Â Keep it up!
I've been coming to this restaurant for a few years, and while service and food go up and down in terms of quality and quantity, in general it's by far good enough to keep me coming back. As far as food, I'm a fan. I actually haven't been to a lot of Indian lunch buffets, for comparison, but the selection here is good enough to keep me stuffed at one plate. The rice and naan come out fairly often during peak lunch hour (+), but every once in a while they lack a little in veggie dishes(-). During the week they have one dish of rice biryani, one dish of naan, usually at least 3-4 veggie dishes and 4-5 meat dishes with one rotating type of fried appetizer in the middle too. Their masalas are great, and I'm a fan of their really tender goat and lamp curries. I especially love that they have a huge selection of cold items, salads and as much raita and onion chutney as I can ladle on to my plate. In the past, mango drinks (either juice or lassi) have been a la carte or only out on the weekend buffets, but maybe in the last four ish visits it's been out on their buffet permanently as part of the price. Big fan of that. If I had to pick one negative though, it would be the overall heaviness of all the food. Whether veggie or meaty, everything is super saucy/creamy. And when it's served buffet style with the temptation to pile on, my stomach starts to hurt verrry quickly!
Service has also gotten better. Not in the way that I have any clue what the guy's name is, or even what his voice sounds like really. But I, against my will, seem to drink BARRELS of water when I go out, and not once in the past year or so has my water glass ever been empty! That is more than enough for me at this type of place. Kudos to you guys. Current lunch buffet prices have gone down in the past year, or at least back down to what they used to be after a temporary price hike. 9.95 for weekdays, 10.95 for weekends. Pretty good deal when you also figure in there's really no need to order any a la carte beverages.
I've been to this place 7-8 times thus far - driving nearly an hour each way. Â So, I really go out of my way to eat at this place. Â I think this place has the best Indian food in the philly area.
I only had their lunch buffet and they never seemed to disappoint.
Malai Kofta is to die for.
Some of their other dishes come very close to authentic indian taste - not the taste most indian restaurants cater to american consumers.
Plus, they have masala tea & mango lassi part of their buffet. Â How can you beat that???
The atmosphere is so so - not bad for a restaurant in a shopping center.
Their sweet deserts can be a hit&miss time to time.
The wife loves to go here for the weekend lunch buffet and I don't mind a bit. Â There are usually many Indian patrons; always a good sign. Â Plenty of variety and everything is fresh and cooked appropriately. Â
If you are near the KOP malls, it will take you about 5 minutes to get there. Â It's located in a plaza so there is plenty of parking. Â It's a nice change from the joints surrounding the mall.
I was surprised at how much I actually liked this place. Â Found out about it on Yelp and decided to give it a try. Â We have done take-out once and tried the buffet another time. Â For the take-out we got Chicken Makhani and the tandori chicken. Â Both were very good and the portion sizes were pretty good. Â The tandori chicken had great flavor all the way through the meat and not just on the outside skin/meat. Â I bet it was cooked for a long time in those delicious spices. Â I love a little heat to my Chicken Makhani and that's just the way it is prepared here. Â The prices are slightly more than I pay for Indian food, but if I have a craving and if I'm in the area, I would swing by.
The buffet is good and bad. Â The bad is that if you go on the weekends, you have to eat the buffet. Â There is no choice and you can't eat off the menu. Â I'm not a huge buffet fan so that was the first no no. Â Also, the food in the buffet kind of tastes the same and there wasn't much variety, but it's a pretty good deal if you can eat a lot. Â The mango drink was very sweet and refreshing! Â Since I hate buffets but like the food, three stars is fair.
The food here is incredible, there's no doubt and the buffet is a great value. Â Yet every time I come, there is something shady going on: this most recent time, they refused a patron's credit. Â They also charge a $10 minimum to use your credit card, which isn't posted anywhere. Â This results in the person usually paying more for their meal.
Also, I went in there to order take out dinner one weekday night at around 5 PM...the doors were open, but it was dark when I walked in...there were several (waitstaff?) lying on the floor between the tables. Â They yelled out: we're closed! Â Frigging weird...I've ordered take out dinner from there before so needless to say I was surprised.
There is another choice in the area called Chinnar in the Pathmark shopping center. Â The buffet is a little more spartan, but has all the regular favorites. Â It seems cleaner, more well-lit and also less um...shady.
So, my first Indian experience goes to Taste of India. I must say, it was impressive.
The dining room is rather small. Luckily Taste of India has a buffet so I didn't have to decide on just one meal. It was a rather small buffet but gave alot of variety. The place was empty when we arrived right before noon but starting getting busier as we were leaving.
I tasted pretty much a bit of everything. It was a very filling meal. Luckily I went with someone who knew his stuff and explained every dish and what I could expect from them. The rice mixed with the chana masala seemed to be my favorite. Pick and choose what you like then go up for seconds :)
The desserts were good. It was interesting at first but give them a shot. I was surprised at how good they were.
The staff was pretty adamant about refilling our glasses of water. I felt they were at our table every couple of minutes. Maybe they should get bigger cups or leave a pitcher of water on each table.
We paid a little over $11 for our lunch (each). After reading some other reviews I see they changed their pricing a bit.
I could still smell the aroma of Indian spices coming out of my pores.
This is the sister restaurant to the "Taste of India" located within the same shopping complex as the Trader Joe's in Berwyn.
While the food at Taste of India generally features an excellent and powerful flavor profile, it is also very heavy. Since I haven't been to Taste of India in nearly a year, I can't discuss individual dishes, but let me say that the one hour of tremendous pleasure while eating at Taste of India was usually followed by several hours of disgust as the food would fester in my gut and weigh me down.
Despite rarely being more then 1/4 full, the service was usually lacking. For the lunch buffet, more than once I had 2 plates piled to the side and it was almost a guarantee that at some point during the meal, my water glass would run dry.
If you are able, I'd highly recommend making the trip to Bawarchi in Chesterbrook. If not, Taste of India is certainly acceptable; just take it easy and don't be surprised if you feel a bit of discomfort later on.
Since we both commute to the Main Line, the manpiece and I meet up here after work sometimes to grab a quick bite to eat and evade particularly horrendous rush hour traffic on Rte. 76. So far, everything we have ordered has been incredible--especially Paneer Chilly and Chicken Chennai. And it doesn't get any better than sopping up the savory sauces with Pudina Paratha (whole wheat griddle bread stuffed with mint). I also highly recommend Rasmalai, a custardy rosewater-flavored treat, for dessert.
Other reviewers commented about the prices being a bit steep, but it was only 30 for two people for the dinner menu. Plus, there's always plenty of leftovers for a second meal as well. You totally get your money's worth in terms of quality and quantity.
A legitimate complaint, and the reason a star fell off of my review, is that the service could be better. The hostess/waitress isn't very attentive and at one point actually refilled our water while talking on the phone. At least we weren't parched? I don't know. It was very odd. The busboys keep you happy though.
We don't live around there, but if you do, take advantage of the BYOB sitch and bring along some yummy wine.
Driving around, looking for a place for dinner, we passed Taste of India and my co-worker asked "Is this place a chain?" Â I couldn't blame her...80% of the Indian restaurants I see have "India" in the name, along with some random food related word. Â "Flavor of India", "India House", and here we have "Taste of India".
I was a bit worried when we walked in and the place was desolate. Â I was even more worried when the food took some time to come out even though the house was empty. Â We had ordered some garlic naan, chicken tikka masala (medium spiciness) and lamb chennai (spicy spiciness). Â They also brought out some rice and yogurt (which I'd never seen brought out before).
The chicken turned out to not really be spicy at all, but it still had a great, thick flavor. Â The lamb did have a kick, and while I couldn't really taste any coconut in the sauce, it was decent and meaty. Â The naan was good as well. Â Overall the experience was pretty ordinary (and a bit pricey), except for the end when our waited handed out hot towels and a fruit basket to dive into. Â That was a nice touch, but nothing to really make it memorable.
Great indian food, mainly a mix of punjabi and gujurati dishes - even better its a lunch buffett!
The prices keep going up for the lunch buffet (only time I've been) but it's still really tasty.
I love the super soft naan, chilli chicken, raita and red/orange onions.
Lots of selection too!
I love myself some good Indian food and Taste of India fits the bill perfectly. Â As a native of the San Francisco bay area, when I moved to Philadelphia I found myself missing the great selection of Indian food restaurants that I was used to, and had to find myself a replacement. Â Taste of India was the best, by far.
Even though they do not have a large selection at the lunch buffet, the selection is always delicious! Â Plus, they do not shy away from spicy dishes, as some other local Indian restaurants do. Â The dinner prices are a bit more expensive, but I always try to make room for some chicken makhni every time I'm in the area. Â You will not be disappointed.
I used to be a regular here for their lunch buffets a few years ago, which I thought used to be about $7/person. Â But when I came here about a month ago, the check was ~$25/2 people! Â And for that, they lose a star. Â
Besides the price, the food here is actually quite good. Â The buffet is great for newbies to Indian cuisine. Â Good variety, decent service, and although I'm not an Indian food connoisseur, it fits my tastebuds just fine. Â
For those with a sweet tooth, try a Gulab Jamun - its like biting into a sugary, syrupy-soaked doughnut.
Food is great, but the service is next to horrible. Â Every time that I go in with my family, we have to flag down the waiter (keep in mind that we go early enough in the evening that we are the only ones in the joint) to order, then wait the interminably long time it takes for them to bring the food out. Â Also, if you are going to order gulab jamun, just don't. Â They will not bring it out to you. Â Even if you remind them three or more times, you will likely just decide to leave instead of seeing if they will actually bring it out to you. Â Only once did they bring it out. Â The other times I ordered it, they never brought it and we never even got a second look from our waiter after he gave us our entrees. Â Now I simply walk up to the main counter and tell them that, although I did order it, they, again, did not bring it out, so just scratch it from my check, m-kay?
My advice is to simply order it all to go and arrive well after they say you should. Â Maybe then you will actually get your damned gulab jamun!
*Yes, I am bitching and moaning about gulab jamun. Â There has to be a first for everything on yelp, right?
****UPDATE****
I finally got my gulab jamun tonight. Â It only took forever and a day, but that made up for the otherwise bad review.
I usually go for the lunch buffet. Â Northern Indian style, like most of the places around here. Â The tandoori is superior. Â It is tender and not overcooked, like some I have encountered. Â The nan is also to be recommended. Â They have rogan josh, as well. Â The gravy is quite good and the lamb enveloped therein was extremely tender. Â The navratan (nine jewel) vegetable korma is also a hit.
They have carrot halwa and, for a buffet, good jamuns and rasmalai!
It is one of the best buffets I have been to, the only small tweaks would be making sure there is chai available and also add meat to the already flavorful bones in the goat curry.
Well, its weird to write an update that gives the same rating, but I returned to this place today after being away for a while, and have some new info...
First, yes, the prices did go up. $13.75 per person if I recall correctly. Yes, that is high. But it seemed like the quality of food went up, as did the variety and presentation. Not a huge difference but as someone who has been here many times I noticed it. Maybe it was because we ate here before the lunch rush (instead of after), but the dishes were uniformly fresh and excellent.
Another nice touch is the serve-yourself mango drink station. No, its not a  Lassi, but it ain't water either...and its free. Looked like they had some more desserts too, but I was too stuffed to even think about it.
Like I said before, look at this place as being two meals, not one, and in that light the price is not bad at all. Best Indian in the KoP area. Just to be on the safe side crowd-wise, get here at or before noon.
Dear sweet yelpers. Â If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have given this place a second thought. Â We were looking for someplace different. Â And I have had an aversion to Indian food since my first trimerster of pregnancy, which was well over two years ago (No, I'm not an elephant. Â I've given birth since then). Â But since having an aversion, it wasn't something that has interested me since.
I'm not really quite sure where the wild hare came from, but when I saw the reviews, I really wanted chicken makhani, which pleased my husband to no end, since he's been denied Indian food for the last two years. Â
We went in around 6 and it was dead. Â Like, I heard crickets in the background dead, which made me worried, because I tend to avoid restaurants that are in shopping centers. Â I know this has no bearing on the restaurant, I'm just an odd bird. Â At the same time, we dragged the toddler with us, who is still good in restaurants, but you know that people are always staring at you like you're one of THOSE people, but I digress, and I'll shut up now and tell you how mother effing GOOD this place was. Â Did I say mother effing good? Â Because, sweet merciful heavens, people.... this place was fantastic. Â
The chicken makhani was so good that I wanted to make it into a makhani flavored breath mint, just so I could have that taste in my mouth, forever and always. Â The vegetable korma was really good too. Â The only slight mishap was that my husband was really stoked to have some gulab jaman, but they forgot to put the order in, and by the time the server remembered, the toddler was making us out to be those people. Â So we didn't get to have any of the gulab juman. Â But thankfully, we have makhani leftovers. Â
I will say that it does fill up quickly around dinner time, and the restaurant is small, so getting there around 5:30-6 is probably your best bet.
Since I recently had a small lifestyle change that precludes my driving out to Himalayan for my weekly Indian Lunch Buffet treat, I started going to Devi in Exton. While I like Devi a lot, they have been victims of their own success and lunch on the weekends can be very crowded and loud. Further, I have missed the spiciness of the food at Himalayan that just isn't present at Devi. Also, Devi is always lackadaisical in replenishing the bread, which is an annoyance. Long story short, we decided to try Taste of India.
And we are very glad that we did! Their lunch buffet offers more selections than Devi, is kept well refreshed, and the food is excellent and lively! 2/3 of the buffet is Vegetarian and on weekends they have 2 types of breads and 2 soups, as well as salad, desserts, labni, pakoras, samosas, and a compliment of excellent entrees. The staff is pleasant and the interior, while generally kept on the dim side, is clean and nicely decorated. They offer a broad and equally delicious full-service menu for night-time dining.
Taste of India is now our new "go to" place for Indian Buffet Lunch and the guests that we've brought have been as happy with the place as we (and have returned to prove it).
Located in Fairfield Shopping Center in Exton in the corner between Giant and Ross, parking can be a bit distant depending on what time but there are always spaces. Their prices for buffet are currently $12 weekdays and $13 weekends.

If you ask me, this is one of the more reliable, tasty Indian buffet places, in an area crowded with similar restaurants.
The tandoori, chicken lollipop, chicken makhani and palek paneer are highly recommended. Their Gulab Jamun (small donut balls in sugar syrup) are usually nice and warm too.
This is one of the Taste of India locations, conveniently located in the Gateway Shopping Center - the other is in Exton, PA. Their dining room isn't exactly the largest (and their nice chandeliers make the space look even smaller), so beware, it can get crowded quickly, as this is a popular lunch spot. Luckily there's lots of parking.
For the past two years, I've only had the buffet lunch here ($8), and wholeheartedly recommend the chicken biryani, chana masala, and chilly [sic] chicken, easily my favorite dish there. Each dish had a constant low level heat to it, thanks to the Indian spices, and I was sweating a little when I left. Stop by for a filling meal!
