I've been a frequent patron of the Tryon for over 12 years (knew it back when it was "Robby's") and have recommended it to MANY friends. Unfortunately, the place has taken a turn for the worse.
Management needs to pull it's head out of it's A$$ and show a little loyalty to it's staff and regulars. The new staff are pretty much MIckey Mouse club and my old faves are dropping like flies. Time to find a new SW hang.
Well I wrote a great review a while ago, and that was true at the time. Now new management has come in and fired all of the loyal long term staff that was the glue that made this place awesome. There have already been major changes that have made a serious impact on this place and I am sure there are more to come. After years of this being my usual hang out I really don't know that I will be going back again. This is a real shame and really shows that as a business they have no respect for those that got them to where they are today.
Review Source:".50¢ Taco's on Mondays". What! Taco's are served on a Corn Hard Shell filled with Taco Meat, Lettuce, Cheddar Cheese and Tomatoes. Comes with Salsa. Oh dang. So much for losing weight. .50¢ Tacos, shut the front door. I'm all in. The Salsa wasn't super but it was fine. Store bought kind if i had to guess but passable. I had so many toppings i had to use my fork to pick up my Taco / Salad Fix-ins. Guess I'll be here on Mondays. Awesome.
Review Source:I can see why my friend comes here frequently - I just wish I'd learned about it when I still lived in the area! Outstanding range of daily and happy hour food specials, including 50 cent tacos during the Monday trivia night. Big screen TVs abound for sports, including a huge projection screen for some games. Pool tables and a game room are available, with free pool on Sundays. Serving staff were efficient and friendly without being intrusive.
Review Source:Well, this is a Lewis and Clark hangout. Maybe "THE" LC hangout. Idk... I went to OSU. In any case, don't be surprised if it's filled with 21-23 year-olds. It also can get really quiet on weekends because of that fact, as all the kids are downtown, or at house parties, or passed out in the neighbor's flower garden, or hazing a new law student or... Who knows?
During the day or during sporting events, the crowd is more mixed with neighbors and such.
In terms of nightlife, this is really a weeknight bar and a near-closing weekend-night bar when people are heading home from downtown. Weeknights... Monday night trivia games are fun and busy. Thursday's are packed with kids getting the $4 long islands.
It's clean, has ok bar food, over 20 beers on tap, and a basic selection of booze. There are a couple pool tables and Foosball. Lots of TVs always tuned to sporting events. I'll often go there for Blazer or Timber games. It's a Duck-centric place, too. As a Beav, I don't care for that, but it's not so obnoxious that it keeps me away.
The servers are efficient and polite, but not typically personable. Like, they are generally just slinging drinks and don't really care who you are - assuming you aren't one of their friends who are smoking on the back porch - even if you are a regular. A couple are pretty friendly though, and none are surly.
In outer SW, there are only a couple good bar options for nightlife. Depending on the night, this can be a fun place, but it helps to be in the Lewis and Clark demographic. Otherwise, you can easily become an outsider. If you're outgoing and match the college demographic, it can be a lot of fun. There are a lot of nice fun (and sometimes drunk) people there.
My most frequented bar in Portland, though this is mostly due to location. They have a lot of local beers on tap for just $4 (less at happy hour). My favorite thing about Tryon is the nightly deals for each day of the week. On Monday you can get 50 cent tacos, on Wednesdays a burger and beer for 6 dollars (7 with a non-domestic beer), $4 long island iced teas on Thursdays, etc. And surprisingly, the food is actually really good! Overall, I really like the relaxed, untrendy feel of this bar, and would definitely go there if I was looking for a place to watch a game, play trivia (which they have on Monday nights), or just meet friends for a beer.
Review Source:Never again! My fiance and I had a small engagement party here (he planned it as a surprise for the same day he popped the question) it was slightly busy but Tue food was goods and the drinks were relatively cheap... Long story short, a few weeks later we were hungry and since we live so close though we would give them another try... BIG MISTAKE! After the guy gave us menus (2-3 min after sitting down) he came and took our orders (5-10 after menus) and then we proceeded to wait. And wait, and wait... Finally the guy came over to tell us that our food would be out shortly (about 35-40 minutes after ordering) while we waited another 15 minutes before we got our not so good food... all in all we were there for over an hour before we received our food... And the guy never even apologized for the wait even after we complained...
Review Source:3 stars, mainly for the memories. Food was so-so back when it was a different name back in the Stone Age, when I worked/went to school @ LC, and it's still so-so now as TCG.
The drinks HAVE been reliably strong over the years, I never had any complaints from the various co-eds I took there. Not a one of 'em were take-home-to-mom caliber themselves, but then again that wasn't exactly the M.O....
The next closest watering holes to LC are over on Barbur (the Red Barn), or down Taylor's Fy. (meat market Buffalo Gap, anyone?). Slim Pickens! Compared to them, 3 stars or better yet, 2.5 rounded up, is just about right...
I'm not sure what the normal ambiance is, but our visit probably could have been better. We came on a Friday night, around midnight, maybe that's just not prime time from Tryon Creek.
I think one person (the bartender) was working the whole place. Drinks were stiff, but not tasty. Also, really freaking expensive- no matter how much alcohol you put in a drink, if it doesn't taste good, its not worth the money (in my opinion).
My credit card was charged twice. Annoying.
I like the size of the bar. People aren't right on top of each other. And not to be all negative and mean, but I wouldn't want any of the people who were there (save my 3 friends) anywhere near me.
It's a sports bar - rate concomitantly! Â Great people who are in their own business, not yours. Â Staff who learn your favorites quickly and will be as friendly (or not) as you engage them to be. Â You can see any sport you want and they are loyal to first-come, first-served. Â Like a previous rater, I am a Beaver and have sat with Duck fans cheering with me. Â That along with anything else you need makes this my favorite PDX sports bar, hands down!
Review Source:I first went to this place because it is right across the street from my house. I continue to go back because the bartenders are great--funny, crass, attentive, the list goes on and on.
My favorite thing about this bar (aside from its Megatouch machine) is their specials! Who doesn't want a burger and a beer for $7!? AH-MAZING! Free pool on Sunday? Okay! Great little dive-ish bar :)
This is the one bar that I can walk to from my house and I will never go back. My roommate and I decided this would be our local place and started going 3-5 times a week for the first few months we lived in our place. We usually sat at the rail to talk to the bartenders. The bartenders are rude, inattentive, and plain not fun. The atmosphere is terrible, and the drinks cost more than they should. And the food is terrible.
Review Source:Just went there yesterday for the first time. My first time will also be my last.
1) horrible service
She was rude and acted like we were bothering her.
2) the food was not very good
My friend ordered toast and when it arrived it was covered in butter. She sent it back and asked for toast without butter. The toast arrives once more and is BURNT. You would think something that simple wouldn't get messed up twice.
Not worth the money.
The food is nothing special and I'm not a drinker, but this place is great to watch sports or just hang out with a bunch of friends. Â A friend and I took a break from fall finals on a Sunday and went here for lunch. Â They had every single game on. Â It was nice seeing all of that football, but the best part was watching the little groups of each teams fans reacting to their respective games.
Food is OK, but the hanging out and sports watching atmospheres are great.
Trizzity. Â Tron. Â The T Spot. Â Tryon. Â What a bar. Â I've been to this place more than really want to admit to, but I will say it is fabulous for several reasons:
1. Â College hipsters to 50-year-old alchies, this place has the perfect mix of young and old, who are all ridiculous in their own right.
2. Â In College, the booze was a great freakin deal: try a vodka press and pay $4.50 for a pint glass 2/3 full of booze. Â Or a $10 micro pitcher on a Friday night. Â Or, if you dare, try a long island---but do not dare try more than two or you will be praying to the porcelain gods.
3. Â There are some great regulars, keep your eyes out for Max or Blaine. Â If you are a woman, stay away from Max, he is a dirtier than a highway restroom toilet. Â Actually, everybody should avoid Max. Â You'll know it is him because he is missing half of his front tooth.
4. Â I like their french fries, and I've heard that everybody loves the bar grub. Â
5. Â Trivia night is fun, but they don't really like me to come for that because I can't resist hollering out the answers. Â
6. Â The bartenders are the shit. Â And they are very good about cutting off the drunkies, which back in my partying days I didn't appreciate. Â Upon further reflection, I really do. Â I was indeed visibly intoxicated. Â
That's all I can think of now. Â :)
The Tryon became my regular weekly hangout back when I worked at Lewis & Clark College...and even though I don't work there anymore, I still live in the area, and I still come back to the Tryon, week after week. Â The bartenders are a riot - full of character - and the drinks during happy hour are the best deal in town as far as the strength-to-dollars-spent ratio goes.
Also, I have never ordered any food off the menu that I didn't enjoy. Â The Tryon Dip (a French Dip with some added cheese, sauteed mushrooms, and onions) is a particular favorite. The fries are always crispy and their salads are actually quite good.
The ONLY knock I have against the place isn't even their fault - it's the parking. When the LC students are in session, that lot is absolutely atrocious.
I came here to watch the Sounders/Timbers game, as a Sounders fan in Portland for work. This is a basic, yet cozy little bar. I only ordered a club soda with lime (being pregnant and all), which the bartender didn't charge me for--very nice! I didn't order anything to eat, but the menu looked like your basic, yummy pub grub. I would definitely come here again.
My only complaint would be that while it's nice the smoking area is outside, a big waft of cigarette smoke drafts into the bar every time the side door opens. Not very pleasant, but better than a smoky indoor space.
Two stars for now, but this could easily improve.
Tryon Creek Grill is about three or four blocks from my place, so the location is hard to beat. Â But once you get there it's really just a very average bar. Â There are plenty of tv's on the walls tuned to sports and that's cool. Â But you don't really get too much of a sports bar vibe beyond being a local watering hole.
One of the first thing I noticed was a calendar on the table talking about all the specials and event coming up throughout the month. Â It was probably a mistake to get the pizza here. Â One of the worst greaseballs I've ever had. Â Not the worst pizza I've ever eaten, but it's in the ballpark.
I'll probably go back and just get some beers and maybe something safe like french fries. Â And then the rating will probably improve. Â But my experience the first time around I'd like to forget.
As a Lewis and Clark student, I am aware certain people aren't very happy that we take over on Wednesday and Thursday nights. But why would we not? It is a perfect bar for a weeknight beer and game of pool with friends that is super convenient to where we all live.
I for one, love having a neighborhood bar where my friends and I can grab a $6 burger and beer (their vege burgers are actually pretty good) on Wednesdays and get drunk off of one long island on a Thursday, which for many students, is a Friday. There is also something about Tryon that just makes it feel cozy and relaxed...and it's not just the beer.
This bar may not be anything fancy, but it's a great place to meet friends and it's the closest thing Lewis and Clark has to their own bar. I just think more people need to give it a chance.
I used to hate Tryon. I mean, I really used to despise it. But now, I love it. I have no idea how this happened, but I have to assume it was the drinks, the food, the sports, and the staff.
All the drinks are cheap, even the nicer micro brews. They have about 15 or 20 beers on tap, a nice, balanced selection too. It is tough to find a drink over $4, which is a good problem to have. The food is bar food, but it is pretty delicious. The chicken fingers, the nachos, the burgers, and the french dip are all personal favorites. There are tons of HD TVs and the staff is always working hard. They don't usually have too many people working there and it can get pretty crowded, so you might have to be patient during busy hours. But I've never had to wait very long. They are great with spliting up tabs too.
You will learn to love it.
Wow, I used to go to Tryon Creed almost everyday after work. Well, Tryon and Billybang's. This bar used to be a smokestack, but after reading other reviews I see that it's a non-smoking establishment now. I used to play pool at Tryon with my coworkers and the employees would keep our drinks flowing. I was definitely considered a regular there. LOL Anyways, this is a great sports bar and a great place for happy hour.
Review Source:Fear not smoke fearing friends! Smoking is now confined to the outdoor  porch. ..
Watched baseball there on a Sunday -- it was pretty quiet. Â Staff provided quick service and was friendly. Â I ordered a Shirley Temple -- I'm pretty hardcore like that -- and it was on the house... I'm assuming because I'm soooo gooood loookin' (or the bartender didn't want to bother ringing up $1.50)
My friend had devoured his food before I even arrived so I only was able to sample the pickle -- it was great-- crunchy, garlicky, yum.
After the baseball games -- a showing of Animal House began followed by  Caddy Shack ---rad.
There's a lot of haters on the Tryon, and, on first impression, they might be right. Â Getting to know Tryon takes a little effort, but once you do, you'll be happier for it. Â
Now I wouldn't say this is a place to go out of your way for, but it's a damn fine bar to have in your neighborhood. The Tryon bartenders pour stiff drinks, and the beer selection is great. Â I've rarely left there sober, something about the place invites you to have that 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th drink. Â
Oooh! Â The chicken strips are good. Â
Plus, wednesdays are one of the best deals around: 5 bucks gets you a burger and a beer. Â Big burger too.
Well Tryon has led to some confusing and fun/unpleasant times. Yes I know I just contradicted myself, but that's just how I feel, ok? So back off!
It's a pretty straightforward sports bar but it's right next to Lewis and Clark, so there are always a slew of college students that I happen to know there.
The beer selection is usually pretty good. The food is bar food, but not bad, and sports games are broadcast without incident.
The incredible thing about this bar is that I end up going there and wondering, in a drunken haze, how I possibly could have made the decision to go there at all. It's a mystery that keeps me coming back for more!
Somehow, it still amazes me when non-smokers go to smoky bars and give them bad reviews because they're smoky. Â It's so predictable to scroll down and read about stinky clothes and heavy smoke in every single 1- and 2-star review. Â Sheesh...Tryon Creek is a bar where smoking is allowed. Â Hence, if you don't smoke or are sensitive to smoky places, you shouldn't go here. Â There are certainly plenty of non-smoking alternatives, aren't there? Â Just like I don't go to crappy Taco Bell because I can't stand crappy Mexican food. Â It makes me feel crappy. Â I already know I'll be disappointed. Â I will admit, however, that Tryon Creek should install a few fans.
Smoking aside, Tryon gets an A-OK from me because, #1: it has some of the friendliest staff around. Â They really go out of their way to make you comfy and full of beer and decent food. Â
Speaking of which, they have nicely priced pitchers of Fat Tire and other micros, along with some pretty tasty pizza. Â Not the best in town, by any means, but it definitely tastes good, soaks up the beer, and doesn't cause problems later. Â The rest of the food on the menu is mediocre, sports bar food. Â Since most people don't go to smoky sports bars for the food (that would be odd), it's not a big deal. Â They'll feed you here, but it's not spectacular. Â Anyway, that's reason #2: Tasty pizza and a good selection of well-priced beer are important features of any sports bar, in my opinion.
Now, I am a pool shark. Â No really, I will kick your ass. Â At Tryon Creek Grill, the pool tables are short and fast, at only $0.75 per game. Â Trust me, it's hard to find pool that cheap anymore and thus, reason #3. Â Some would say that short tables aren't genuine, and I agree, but you can't beat the price. Â They need a bit more A/C in the summer, though, as the temps rise considerably inside when it's packed. Â There are plenty of TVs for sports fans, tables for after-work happy hour groups, as well as fooseball and pinball machines in the back. Â
Overall, I dig going here, but it's not amazing. Â It's nice for a beer and a game of pool on a Sunday afternoon. Â Unless you need your lungs, apparently. Â I'm not sure how I managed to escape with mine, but somehow, it worked out.
This is the ashtray of SW Portland. Â It's too bad, because the staff is nice, they have pool tables and TV, the food is decent enough, and the ambiance... well, its not terrible. Good place to hang if you are a smoker, bad place to go if you prefer breathing a minimum of 20% oxygen mix.
Review Source:Help, I need a respirator. Â My clothes stink, my hair stinks and I may even have stains on my teeth. Â I'm a non-smoker, but everytime I walk out of Tryon I feel as though I've inhaled 5 packs of Marlboros. Â The beer and food could be good, but you'd never know cause you can't taste 'em. They have decent specials everyday, good pool tables, a foosball table, but until I get my SCUBA respirator charged or the 2009 smoking ban is implemented (wait until 2010, cause they'll need to air it out for at least a year), I'm not setting foot in Tryon.
