It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
This bar is the tale of two bars. Â There is the left side which is quite easy on the eyes and where I'd love to sit down for a couple pints. Â However, I was here for a bday thang on a Sat. night and everyone was on the right side with all the pool tables, foosball, golden tee and hepatitis. Â I swear they stole the couches from my parent's basment. Â There were only 6 beers on tap (Guiness, #9, Foothills Jade IPA and a couple others) with a bunch of bottles available, but I was underwhelmed. Â This day in age you have World of Beer, Yard House, Flying Saucer and even the Tyler's in Raleigh where 50 beers on tap is the minimum now. Â 6 beers on tap for a place with "Taproom" in the name killed it for me. Â The tv's were of nice quality, great 1080p quality, but I simply could not get past the limited beer and deplorable decor. Â If you enjoy camoflogue, musky odors and decade old stains then this place is for you. Â I wish I had eaten something, but did not have much of an appetite. Â This is a bipolar restaurant where good meets bad, and sadly I was stuck in the bad... thus this review.
Great location of the Tyler's chain, offers the great food and service of their other locations with some Carrboro charm. Â On a Sunday night at 7pm the restaurant was packed with a wait-time of about 20 minutes for a party of 4 (which in reality was more like 10 minutes). Â Our server knew the menu inside and out, took all of our orders from memory and everything came out perfectly. Â Definitely check out Tyler's if you're in the mood for a good meal and a beer in downtown Carrboro.
Review Source:I have eaten at Tyler's in Raleigh and Durham, though Carrboro is much closer. I have driven by many times but only stopped recently for the first time.
The Carrboro restaurant is significantly smaller than those other two and it appears a little older. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. Carrboro's Tyler's Taproom has a warmer, friendlier, neighborhood vibe. I noticed several families there last Friday.
As others have noted, Tyler's has a great beer selection and many on tap. I love the burgers but I ordered fish tacos this time and they were excellent. Crisp cole slaw, great tortillas and tasty fish. Â The fries were very good, too.
Friendly and prompt service both at the bar and in the dining room, where I moved for dinner.
Tyler's is in the heart of Carrboro and parking is at a premium during dinnertime. Tyler's has private parking in the rear off Main Street and if it is full, there are two large public parking lots very nearby.
Great place for a burger and a beer, or a burger and a fish taco.
I'd give them 3.5 stars if I could.
Not sure what's happened to Tyler's since the last time I've been. Â The garlic fries, which once were heady and delicious with their garlicky goodness were fairly bland and tasteless. Â The bread for the burgers also seems to have gone to a cheaper stock.
An impressive beer list, to be sure, but I think Tyler's has lost its place as the best pub grub in town.
I hate to do this to Tyler's... I've definitely had good experiences here in the past. They definitely have a great beer list, and the garlic fries are pretty awesome. However, on my most recent trip, my boyfriend and I were extremely disappointed with the service.
This means a lot coming from me-- I'm usually very easy on waitstaff and am a very patient person when it comes to eating out. However, the service this time was just awful. We were seated in a high-traffic area on a busy Friday night, and about 3 different servers passed us by for about 20 minutes before we even got menus. Eventually, we alerted the hostess. The waitress that finally came to our table was one of the servers we saw passing us by numerous times before, and was completely unapologetic when she got to us.
Maybe we were just soured by the experience in general, but the food didn't seem as good as it used to be. Needless to say, we won't be returning here again... maybe we'll try the Raleigh or Durham locations, though.
The food here is pretty good, but it's the beer list that makes it great. Ordered the nachos (stupendous) and the fried pickles (very good, but chips, not spears (my preference)). For my entree, I had the bratwurst. Unfortunately, it was the pre-cooked kind, and it wasn't warmed over very well. Big thumbs down. The whole place smells like their famous garlic fries, which are good, but it makes me wonder what it's like to cook/serve here. You must either grow to love or hate the garlic.
The loung area is a pretty nice spot to watch a game, but it's not a sports bar, so if you're visiting on a weekend evening, musical ambiance takes precedence over sports games. The people here are friendly, but, as I've learned from a couple places now in Carrboro, beware of taking out your gadgets. Some weird hatin' going on in this town in certain areas. (See previous review.)
So I can't say I had the best experience at Tylers... But everything about my experience can be set aside to discuss the awesomeness that is cheese curds. Â
Tylers has them. Â They aren't the easiest thing to come by, they aren't terribly difficult to make, but they are easily looked over and improperly prepared. Â If you've ever had poutine you know this. Â Fries, cheese curds, gravy- at it's simplest. Â Poutine is something of a Northern dream, the first time I had it was in Ottawa on vacation. Â I ate it just about every day for two weeks during my vacation, only substituted with real meals when my stomach wasn't too full. Â Poutine is a dish that will stick to the walls of your insides, it will leave you feeling warm, fuzzy, and delightfully full. Â
Come here, eat poutine, be happy.
World peace could be found at the bottom of a plate of poutine.
After hemming and hawing for ages about where to eat, and of course consulting Yelp, we settled on Tyler's. I was interested in getting some local beer, and the food sounded pretty solid. Most things were good, though not mind-blowing, though a few things stood out.
There wasn't too much of a crowd, but it was a Tuesday night and relatively early. We were seated right away, and our server (Carrie, I think) was prompt and friendly. I was excited about the fact that it was pint night, but unfortunately the pint in question was from a local Philly brewery, and I can just get that at home anytime. So I went for the Foothills IPA, and I wasn't disappointed. Not the best, but it did its job.
We ordered two appetizers, the Italian sausage corn dogs and the fried pickles. The corn dogs were great. They were breaded really nicely, and the sausage was cooked well. The fried pickles were fine, but nothing special. Not quite as crispy as I'd hoped for. I can think of at least two other better fried pickle experiences I've had. We both got burgers for our entrees; my dad went for the Carolina burger (chili and coleslaw), and I had the Pim burger, with pimento and fried green tomato. I'm not a huge pimento fan, but I've noticed it's something I need to deal with in the south if I want a fried green tomato. Dad liked the Carolina burger a lot, though we were both disappointed that they only offered medium. Â But the burgers were good anyway, and the pimento on my wasn't overpowering. I got garlic fries and Dad got house made chips. Both were good. However, I'm not a huge fan of shoestring fries, and they weren't quite crispy enough, but still had a good flavor. My vote goes to the chips on this one.
I'd probably give Tyler's something more like three and a half stars, but I'd rather round up than down. The atmosphere was fine, though I imagine I'd hate it if there was a crowd. The food was solid and the service was friendly, and while I wouldn't rush to get back, I wouldn't turn it down, either.
Wow, what a cool place.
First off, let me say that the bartender that was serving me and my friends was great. Â She knew her beers inside and out, and even went "next door" to pull a pint of Duck Rabbit!
When we were ordering our food, my friend asked which of two dishes she preferred.. Â and she gave us an honest answer! Â This was so refreshing as most servers just tell you "everything is good".
I ordered the Fish Tacos, if you haven't tried fish tacos before give it a shot here as they were DELICIOUS! Â I squeezed the lime onto the fish and I was in heaven.
My only complaints (and these are really minor complaints) are:
1. Â I agree with other reviewers, it seems like they are 1 person understaffed.
2. Â My tacos came with tortilla chips and an itsy bitsy cup of salsa. Â The cup was so small I could not get more than the corner of each chip in the salsa.
Excellent place and I will be back!
Had lunch today with my bf, and it will be the last. Food= warmed up mediocrity, Service= UN-attentive (didnt even give us silverware til AFTER food arrived). Ordered the Cobb salad & it was disappointing, the bf ordered the Monte Cristo he said it was "mehhh", then he ordered the corn dogs b/c he was still hungry & it that turned out to be NASTY poop on a plate.....and there yah' go folks that was our experience with Tyler's.
p.s I created a yelp account just to leave this review, yes it was that bad of a place.
Been here twice. Â First time, I had a good salad. Â It had too much lettuce in it. Â It was all packed down and I stuck a fork in it and then it overflowed the bowl. Â But it was tasty, and I wasn't able to finish it.
Second time I had a burger and the garlic fries. Â The burgers are made with humanely raised, antibitoc/hormone free beef, which is good. Â But they are overcooked, dry, and lifeless, which isn't so good. Â My friend on the first trip wasn't thrilled with the burgers either. Â She did say that some of the other Tyler's locations were much better tho.
The staff was friendly, I didn't wait to long either time. Â I'd go back for a salad.
Tylers serves up some tasty food and has a great selection of beer. Their menu has some nice seasonal choices and the location, if you live in Carrboro, cannot be beat.
Some things to be aware of that the Carrboro location needs to work on:
- the entrees are inconsistent. I have ordered the same meal 4 times and each time the ingrediants were different. That would be fine but the food was only good half the times.
- Acoustics are poor. When it is crowded it is difficult to hear anything. Â That is more of a problem on weekends and Friday evening.
- waitstaff is as inconsistent as the entered.
- they gave a brunch that is really not worth the cost.
- their piazza is not great. Well prepared but not tasty.
Despite the shortcomings Tyler's has some tasty food and a great beverage selection. If they worked on some basics they could easily be 4 or 5 stars.
I like Tyler's, I really do, but I have to admit I have never understood what all the hype was about. Â I mean, people LOVE this place! Â They have a great beer selection, but there are lots of places in the area that do. Â You can get a beer flight with your choice of beers, but they are pricey! Â (I'd definitely check out Brixx if that's your thing though, it's a much better deal.) Â The atmosphere is pretty cool, but basically just a nice taproom/pub environment. Â
The food is usually just alright. Â I ate there tonight and it was pretty hit or miss. Â The pretzel appetizer was quite delicious although the serving was small (the cheese sauce was fantastic while the mustard was way too vinegary!) Â For the entree I got the Bahn Mi which had great flavors, but the garlic fries (which are supposed to be Tyler's signature and were recommended to me by the waitress) were practically raw and pretty inedible. Â Overall, I wasn't disappointed but wasn't impressed either. Â
I usually only go to Tyler's when other people recommend it, or if I'm in the mood for a decent beer. Â I'm pretty much torn on whether I actually really like the place or not, although the Speakeasy bar next door is a cool place, and I do like that you can play pool!
I like this place. Â I try to come here once a year when I am in the area. Â Their food is tasty and their service is pretty good. Â Although sometimes, it seems like the might be one person short, so service can be slow.
If I lived in the area, I would definitely drop by more often.
Be sure to check in on Foursquare to get a free order of Garlic Fries. Â Totally worth it.
BEST kept secret in the triangle! For dinner, don't look at their regular menu and pick ANYTHING out of their seasonal selections. They serve the kind of food that Magnolia Grill used to serve when it was "Magnolia Grill", for a fraction of the price (see picture of the menu). I tried the pulled pork-stuffed dolmades (very subtle, non greasy, and really novel texture and flavors), the roasted beet and smoked blue cheese salad (I thought I would never say this about a salad, but it was amazing!), and the porter-braised pork brisket (the meat tasted like it was coated in a film of grainy apple sauce, super tender, lean and delicious, but the pudding was really mind-blowing). It doesn't get more seasonal than this, and despite the pork, Â everything was really non-greasy. The staff is always very friendly and their beer selection is excellent and ever-changing.
Lunch here is good quality bar food.
I can't believe it has taken me so long to check this place out. Â This is definitely going to be in our "go to" list and a great place to take out of towners to sample beer and have a good meal.
It is very spacious with both tables and booths, the bar area nice and ample and the beer selection is heady. Â In addition to beer, I found the food to rate pretty high making the restaurant portion of the Tyler's a true restaurant experience and not just pub grub. Â And yeah, you gotta like french fries which someone else mentioned but seriously you haven't had fries unless you have tried their garlic fries. Â Freshly grated garlic give these a real kick. Â Not a garlic fan? Â The homemade chips are very crispy and delicious.
I ordered two meals because I can never make up my mind what to get and I would reorder both of them. Â The fried-green tomato with pimiento cheese was amazing and their veggie burger jam packed with quinoa, beans, veggies. Â Seriously, if you need a little push in the fiber department this will do the trick.
My husband whose stomach is smaller than mine had the salmon salad with their house vinaigrette which he enjoyed. The fish tasted fresh and it was a nice light meal. Â
I did  not see any desserts on the menu so I was bummed by that.  Maybe I missed them but I think that should be included. Â
The waitress was very nice and friendly.  You never felt like you were bugging her when you asked her for something which was a nice  change from other dining experiences where I think I am close to getting yelled at for asking for more ketchup.  (you get the whole bottle to yourself here).
We're definitely going back and hope to take visitors with us. Â No kids menu that I saw so would have to have a night out just for the grownups.
Well, I can't say much in the way of beer because I usually drink the likes of the ever-classy Michelob Ultra, but from the few beers I have sampled from their pretty extensive menu, I have to say that they were real good. Â I only had a sip of pumpkin beer in the autumn, but that was a homerun. Â Really good.
The food is what gets me - the portobello mushroom burger is out of this world. Â I have no idea whats in the sauce-y/mayonnaise type blend that they give you to smother it in, but oh man...oh man. Â (Although, unlike other mushroom burgers I've had, this one is sliced mushrooms, versus just one big mushroom cap being the "beef." Â Makes it a little messier.)
I think it's a great place to go, and it's never been overwhelmingly busy. even on Saturday nights. Â I rarely venture out to Carrboro, but if I ever attend a show at Cat's Cradle, I am always dragging people to Tyler's first. Â Nom.
Here's my beef with Tyler's: because it's a bar AND a restaurant, unless you're just sitting at the bar, there's enormous pressure from the waitstaff for everyone at the table to eat a full meal. (To be fair, they might say, if you wanna drink, just go through the doors to Speakeasy.)
Their beer selection is great, but their food is just OK, and they don't give you the opportunity to separate the two.
Oh and you kind of have to like french fries.
Susan D. on the Apple Brown Betty: "Too much apple, not enough Betty."
Tyler's is connected to the Speakeasy bar, so I sort of think of it as well-made bar food. That is to say, Tyler's has the kind of food you crave when you've been drinking, but it's actually good, not just "good because you're drunk".
One of the people I ate with insisted on ordering the fried pickles, which were surprisingly tasty, considering I had never considered frying a pickle before. I ordered a BBQ bacon cheeseburger (bbq sauce + bacon + beef = home run of flavor.) My sister got a pizza that seemed fancy, in that it was on a thin, crunchy crust. It was all yummy, and not too heavy or greasy (except for the fried pickles, but that kind of goes without saying.) Tyler's also has a full bar, so anything you can order at Speakeasy's you can order at Tyler's.
Although we ate in the restaurant, you can apparently order food from Tyler's while you're getting crunk at Speakeasy. They'll even bring it to you in the bar! It's a very symbiotic relationship, overall. If you're looking for a casual place to get drinks with dinner, you really can't go wrong with Tyler's.
One of the great things about Carrboro is that there is something to please almost anyone in our small walkable downtown.
Tyler's is the place that pleases people who like beer.
People who like all kinds of beers: pilsners, lagers, stouts, porters, brown ales, IPAs, and so on. Â Now if you're with someone who is really into Belgian beers, or wants to sit outside, then Milltown would be a better choice.
I see a lot of people reviewing the food, which is fair, but not really the reason you would seek Tyler's out. Â With that said, I've eaten a number of different menu items on a number of occasions and have always enjoyed what I ordered. Â
But the reason I go back is the beer.
(and if you go on Tuesday, you can order the 'pint night' selection and keep the glass)
In my opinion, Tyler's is a BEER bar. Which means they have an amazing delicious rotating selection of draft beers on tap... and if they just-so-happen to have okay food, it's an added bonus.
Starting out with the beer - they seem to rotate their lines with seasonals pretty often. They carry some local beers and some of the best American craft: Sierra Nevada, New Belgium, Great Divide, etc. They also have some great imports on tap, and I don't think they rotate as often as the American craft beers. My favorite export on tap is Duvel Green. I think the beer gets 5 stars.
Now the food - it's decent. It's not BAD as some reviewers seem to think. I have been here a few times, and I've never eaten something and said, "EW" (which I certainly have said at some other "beer bars" in the area). My favorite thing to get here is a bowl of the vegetarian 4-bean chili. They have a big menu, but they have special T's next to some of their "signature" or "recommended" items. I would suggest sticking to those. Food gets 3.5 stars.
I like Tyler's...yes I do. But more so the first time than subsequent visits.
I don't know why, but this particular establishment just seems to suffer from repeated visits - food wise. As for the beer, well...you can't really go wrong there. It's always interesting and pint nights makes for a full cupboard enough to warrant having some extra storage for all of those pint glasses if you like to drink.
So...what's my beef with Tyler's? Well the food is a bit staid and just really can't compete with some of the better joints nearby. While I fully acknowledge this place is a pub/restaurant...I just expect more when the restaurant menu has items like a portabello mushroom sandwich or even a crab cake sandwich. The first time we tried these, they seem pretty good, but subsequent visits (like our last with an out of town friend) really just seemed to fall flat. The portabello mushroom was just meh....pretty plain and I found the marinade a bit overpowering (too acidic). I ordered the Carolina nachos and the subsequent cheese "sauce" gopped on top of the dry pork BBQ was just uninspiring. Add the oversalted nature of the dish...and well, it wasn't that great. Our friend ordered the Gorgonzola pear walnut salad and that was just alright. Nothing great...but it was a salad so there's not much to critique there.
I know, I know...it's just that the novelty of Tyler's quickly wore off after the 3rd visit here for me. It was nice at first, but the menu just kind of reeks of boring. Yes, even the garlic fries they touted as some of the best were just meh. I've definitely had better home cut fries elsewhere (Nova Scotia for one, even the Atomic Ale Brewpub in Richland, WA, and Metro Pizza's garlic Romano fries in Las Vegas all produce better versions). Tyler's garlic fries didn't have enough garlic on them and quickly cooled down to a cold mass of potatoes.
Sorry Tyler's you were interesting when we first moved out here....but I think I've grown beyond your current offerings. I'll still frequent you for your beers esp. on pint night. But...I'd rather try more interesting fare elsewhere.
Torn between 3 and 4 stars. Â Food is good bar fare, and the beer selection is good. Â However, based on the prices everywhere else I went in Carrboro, the prices here were pretty high by comparison (micros were 5+ bucks, entrees approached 15). Â Still seemed cheap to me, though.
We split a bunch of different items:
The bratwurst platter was damn good, and the fried banana peppers were great. Â Everything else we had was brutally salty but otherwise tasty - fried olives, some kind of gorgonzola-walnut pizza, and fried pretzels.
Service was attentive but the place was totally empty so who knows what it's like if the place ever gets crowded.
A great place to discovery your next favorite beer. They also serve good burgers. I'd suggest trying the Old West Burger. Avoid the fish and chips. They are flavorless and gooey. Otherwise, it's a great place to meet friends over dinner and a pint.
Extra Parking on street behind restaurant.
If you don't mind dim lighting and laggy (but friendly) service, go to Tyler's for the garlic fries and a burger. Â I usually eat there at least once every few months and pat myself on the back for being a carnivore. Â
I don't have much experience with their beers, but what I've had is good. Â The Speakeasy is next door, so you can easily switch between both venues.
Warning: Â Don't order anything from the brunch menu. Â The portions are tiny and the food is so-so. Â The continental plate looked like they got some hillshire farms deli meats, arranged them on a plate, then covered it in plastic wrap to sit in the refrigerator for a few days. Â The french toast was overpriced (I think my friend got 2 slices of bread with some measly powdered sugar dustings), and the corn beef hash was nothing compared to Breadman's.
I really love Tyler's. Tuesday Pint nights helped fill up my cabinet after my move to Chapel Hill with an awesome assortment of bar glasses. For a couple bucks, I got to keep the glass after I drank the beer. They have an awesome assortment of beers too, in fact they have a whole separate menu.
The Chapel Hill location was the first. They've got a pizza oven that the others don't have. It's pretty good. I like the BBQ chicken pizza, but haven't met many I don't like.
Their garlic fries rock. But if you're setting up for a late night make out session, they can swap out a salad or some hand cut chips which are both good. Preserve your opportunities for procreation.
At long last, I've been able to go to Tyler's.  I have heard nothing but good things to this point, so it was nice to get out and check it out on the night of the  first UNC-Dook game (UNC lost :( ).  From what I saw, I'm definitely impressed. Â
Tyler's itself seems to be broken up into three separate areas, all that seem to also be separate businesses: the beer/wine store (Carrboro Beverage Co), the restaurant (the review  you're reading right now) and the more bar-type area (Speakeasy).  All are good, but I'll focus just on the Restaurant and Taproom.
- 23 beers on tap (all high quality wares too, ranging from light stuff like Holy Grail Ale to heavy, with ciders (pear cider!) as well).
- The beer mix options are fascinating: chocolate stout + raspberry lambic sounds awesome (I haven't tried it yet, but I'd definitely be up for it).
- Food is good too (I had a pear salad, and their spicy honey mustard is awesome, and the buffalo wings smell really good)
- Service is excellent: one of my companions didn't initially get her pizza, but after checking in with them, they apologized, got it out to her, and even comped a beer for her for the trouble. Â So great service, even when things get cray-cray.
- For sports watching, TVs are decently positioned, though Speakeasy next door is much better suited for watching UNC-Dook.
It's a little pricey, so Tyler's isn't for someone looking for a cheap brew or cheap food. Â But if you're looking for a good American dinner with fascinating beer options, Tyler's is an awesome choice.
I like Tyler's juuuuust fine. Â This is a solid, down to earth, not quite blue-collar corner of Carrboro with a lot of options. Â Tyler's itself has a bar with bonus sofa area and a sit-down restaurant. Â Next door is the Speakeasy bar/lounge/poolhall and on the other side is The Carrboro Beverage Shop (Tyler's Beer Shop).
The restaurant is really nothing special except it superbly fills a need in Carrboro for good midrange eats. Â Â Sandwiches, Burgers, a few entrees and wood-fired pizzas. Â I really LOVE the Chicken Fried Chicken and for $11 it satisfies me at a profound level. Â That's not to say you'll get out of here cheap, though, because how can you come to Tyler's and not order two or three REALLY NICE BEERS? Â
The beer selection is great. Â They always have plenty of variety on tap and they keep shuffling new ones in so as to keep things interesting. Â Often times they'll have special or limited-edition beers that would be hard to find anywhere else.
The bar, incidentally, is solid, with old pros working every night and a nice view of the bustling streets of Carrboro. Â There are a couple areas where a group could sit and be comfortable. Â Also, Pint Night (Tuesdays-go early!) Â allows you to drink the Beer of the Night and take the glass home. Â Careful, though, it could be used as evidence.
I've also ordered kegs and lost my camera at Tyler's. Â They were very helpful on those occasions. Â
Downsides: Â hmmm....popularity makes it a crowded place pretty often. Â And, uh, the restaurant seating is a little hokey aka unpretentious.
This has to be one of the most underrated restaurants in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area. Â I think without a doubt, it has the best food of any bar/restaurant and it's all pretty reasonably priced. Â
I got a shrimp po boy sandwich that tasted pretty good. Â It was a pretty good size portion, came with a lot of fries, and the best part is it cost less than $10. Â If you want the best bar food in the area, come to Tyler's and save yourself some money at the same time by skipping over the other restaurants in the area.
So Tyler's is definitly nothing special. The crowd is slightly lame, but i can see how this would be your thing if you disdain the hipper places in Carrboro. This is the go-to place for down-to-earth drinking and pool-playing in town.
I would say Tyler's is a bit more collegy than most bars in Carrboro and feels more like a Franklin Street bar. The window seats at the tables up front are nice for watching passerbys. AND they do have Lagunitas on tap..which is good in my book.
I've only been to Tyler's a few times, but each time has been exceptionally pleasant. My favorite part about Tyler's is the beer selection, not only in the bar itself, but they recently opened a bottle store next door where you can purchase rare bottles to take home.
For a beer over, the place is amazing. On my last trip we drank quite a few unique brews in the bar, and took home some even more unique ones to enjoy later. The triangle doesn't have that many places where you can pick up rare bottles, this is the only one I actually know of other than peace street market. Well worth a trip!
Oh man, when I used to work in Carrboro we had 'meetings' every Tuesday after 5 at Tyler's and they were awesome. There was little business to be had, but lots of beer and wings. Pint night meant that we could try the latest featured ale and get a glass to take home as well. I thereby amassed a rather huge and impressive collection of useless pint glasses (as I rarely stock beer at home and even more rarely invite upwards of 50 houseguests to partake). My favorite, by far, is the Chimay goblet.
Tyler's has seating at the bar, tables throughout, and a corner nook with some dorm-looking couches. I like it for lunch and I like it for bar-food. Good pizza, great quesadillas. An excellent selection of beer. And of course -- wings. Just say no to the fries, though; they're stringy and odd.
In a word, overrated. It took me a while to try Tyler's despite friends raving about it, but I think the most redeeming quality is trivia on Wednesday nights.
The beer is good, but overpriced, and the food is mediocre (and overpriced). Save yourself the time and go to Milltown down the road, which is essentially the same idea with cheaper food that tastes better anyway.
I have some friends that swear by Tyler's. I've heard claims of it being the best bar, burger, or fries in town. I keep looking for what these people see and have yet to find it.
I must admit that I'm very fond of the atmosphere. The bar has an airy, industrial feel that is coolly relaxed.
But, after trying a couple of their menu items, I've been unimpressed by the food. For that reason I'd have to categorize it as average bar fare and not much more.
Certainly a cool place to hang out, but falls short of the hype.
Yeah, awesome garlic shoe-string fries. Â And, they really do have an impressive offering of beers, and a notch-above-the-frat-set theme nights, trivia contests, and the Carrboro location still has some amazing pool tables in the "Speakeasy".
Otherwise... all locations are loud, with really uncomfortable dining room seating, poorly trained servers (oh, I hope... otherwise they are just uncaring and inattentive by nature) and the food is hit-or-miss but rarely great.
Still, if you love beer, you'll find a great variety here, and the game-room and theme night settings are lively and can be fun. Â So, I'd get a full meal elsewhere and then go here later for a beer and socializing.
**Edit: Â Now that chef Matt Romatzick has left Azure to work at Tyler's (what?!) the food will definitely be worth another try... I'll update once I've had the chance to see what he'll bring to the table here...
Best bar in Chapel Hill, in my opinion. My opinion takes into account the fact that undergrads have cooties and must be avoided at all costs. Also, I like fruity beers, and Tylers can accomodate that. They have lambics and pear ciders and weird beer mixers. They have manly beers too, in case you were worried about that.
Also, their hamburgers are pretty rockin.
Let's not forget that on Tuesdays if you get their special beer, you get to keep your glass. This is perfect for poor grad students who otherwise own no glasses and have to drink water at home straight from the tap.
Minus one star for making me wait more than 1/2 hour for my food the other night. I know they were busy, but really, everyone else got their food before us. It made me feel sad inside.
Aaaah Tyler's. I have lots of fond memories of this place. Not just because I've spent countless "Pint Nights" here with good friends, or because they have great pub food rivaling that found in the major cities in which I've lived, but because they have a stellar beer list. Seriously. Bottled and DRAFT. For the Triangle - it's a gem. Heck, even now living in LA, Tyler's still seems pretty special. They don't pump up their beer list with blah and ubiquitous beers like Stella, Yuengling, or Red Stripe - they have really good stuff. Think breweries like Dogfish Head, Magic Hat, or Rogue. If you frequent pubs for great beer with friends - this place is for you. If you go for a happening social scene - errr.... why are you in the Triangle anyways?
