My wife and stopped back in this morning for breakfast after our first visit last night. She had the house made Corned Beef Hash & I had a make your own omelette with feta, cheddar, and black olives. They also do a house made Granola that I ordered to take home just to try. Best breakfast in the area in my opinion. We'll be back.
Review Source:We went here for dinner on our first night in Mishawaka and loved it! My husband had the kobe burger with a side of coleslaw, and I had the bulgur and lentil "meatloaf" which came with a salad and a side of soup. I chose the curried carrot soup which was lovely on a cold winter night! Both of us really enjoyed our meals and pints (3 Floyds zombie dust and Amber Nutcracker). Portions were the right size, service was good, ambiance was great! We also ordered dessert, chocolate kahlua cake and a lemon square which we ended up taking home. All in all a great experience and we will definitely go back for brunch!
Review Source:Recently I was in South Bend visiting some friends and we had breakfast at the Uptown Kitchen. Â Awesome experience! Â The food was great, service was attentive, and the atmosphere relaxed. Â The only issue that I had was that it was a tad noisy for my taste; however, some would just call that the urban hubhub and
Review Source:This review is based on my breakfast and dinner experience. Two separate visit that should get two separate reviews but I'm lazy.
Great breakfast and I highly recommend this place.  The prices are reasonable and the quality of food was very good. My boyfriend and I shared the breakfast burrito and banana-blueberry pancakes. Our server split our food without us asking which worked out perfectly. Both dishes were warm, fresh and delicious. Our server was amazing and the manager came over to make sure everything was OK. We had a great breakfast experience and we knew we wanted to comeback  later for dinner and bring friends also in town for a wedding.
Our dinner experience could have been better. Â The service we received at dinner was not at the same level as my breakfast experience. Â The food was just as delicious as breakfast but the service was sub-par. Â After my whole party arrived I had to ask for menus. To get straight to the point, out server was slow. I believe if we had had a better server my dinner experience would have been more enjoyable. Â The quality of food was just as good as breakfast. Â I recommend the Cajun chicken sandwich and garlic parsley dressing on your salad. And for dessert, the snicker truffle.
Have eaten here many times over the last few years, I have always been impressed by service and quality of food. Â I've been particularly impressed with breakfasts and desserts. Â Drinks and smoothies are also fantastic. Â Management and ownership is always active and checking in with customers.
Review Source:Uptown Kitchen has really branded themselves as a breakfast and lunch spot so I usually don't think of them when it comes to dinner. Â Sunday brunch is always great with half-priced bloody marys (they make their own mix with fresh herbs and a nice little kick). Â Some of our favorites include the breakfast burrito and corned beef hash. Â They offer daily specials and have a variety of breakfast dishes.
My most recent trip to Uptown was for lunch with my sister and aunt who were both in from out of town. Â We were seated in the bar and it was pretty slow for a Monday at 1:00. Â Our server greeted us right away and brought our drinks while we perused the menu (we all agreed we were jealous of the two ladies enjoying a mid-day Cosmo next to us!).
Breakfast is served all day, but we opted for lunch.  I ordered the lunch burrito with grilled chicken, avocado, pepper jack, onions, black bean relish and homemade  salsa.  It was pretty good, but it didn't wow me like the breakfast burrito.  All the sandwiches come with a option of side salad (great selection of greens with one of their homemade dressings), homemade cole slaw (not sure if it's always the same, but I found it to be a little lacking in flavor so I'll stick with the salad next time) or fresh fruit.  My sister ordered the oven roasted turkey and gouda on sourdough which she said was good.  My aunt ordered the chicken and avocado club.  She liked it; however, she ordered it without sprouts and there were sprouts on it.
Uptown can be a little pricey - our three lunches with two iced teas and a water was around $36, but the quality of food is definitely above average.
I have to admit, I have one thing that absolutely drives me crazy every time I am at Uptown...their drinking glasses always appear cloudy and look dirty. Â I don't know if it has to do with the type of detergent they us or what, but it's a turnoff. Â Uptown always seems to pay attention to the details so I'm not sure why this continues to be overlooked...we mention it every time we are there to no avail.
Do try and save room for dessert (we never do), but all are made in house and look amazing. Â Uptown catered the desserts for our wedding (wrote a separate review for that).
Uptown Kitchen is definitely worth a visit!
I really wanted to like this place more when I met some people here for lunch. Cute interior decor, very modern as if you were in a larger city. The menu is creative and unique and has many vegetarian and vegan friendly items. However, when I got my soup, it was cold, and the entree (the quinoa burger), while good, did not knock my socks off. I did see that they do not use heat lamps or microwaves as do other traditional restaurants, so that could be the reasoning behind the soup, I am not sure. They did apologize and bring another bowl out when we told them the soup was not warm.
Aside from that, this was a nice lunch spot with enjoyable food and ambiance. I would come back again to give it another try.
Thank you for the Gluten Free menu, which I never paid attention to before - but my 6 year old daughter needs that option now, and Uptown has it.
Plus - the stuffed French toast was great. The coffee is amazing. It's the little things, the details. Had some of the omelet, too... Nice job.
Great selection. Great atmosphere. It feels more hip than Northern Indiana.
A little on the pricey side - but that's probably a "gatekeeper."
Why do I always find a need to review this place every time I eat here?
Despite the ionized and filtered air, something smells fishy here. Â
First of all, I don't care how good your food is (which it really isn't)... nothing warrants these kinds of prices for breakfast fare. $7 for a bowl of oatmeal? $9 for pancakes? Fuck you. Every opportunity for an upsell is exploited.
It seems like this place is all marketing. I've heard somebody say before that the owner of this place and the even-more-puffed-up "The Mark" -- together known as  the "Clean Plate Club" brand (Jesus Christ) -- is really good at getting people with too much money to feel good about spending too much money.  It's absolutely true.  Everything about this place is disgustingly twee, and fills the void for ignorant Grangerites taking perfunctory stabs at the whole "sustainability" thing.
Something to think about while you're swallowing a bite of that $10 slice of cake...
The public's confusion between quality and presentation at this place is acutely exacerbated by a total lack of anything original in the area. Â Where else are you going to go, Allie's Cafe? Â No wonder everybody is ejaculating all over themselves about Uptown Kitchen.
My favorite restaurant in the area! Â Uptown has the best breakfast/brunch. Â The fresh squeezed orange juice is delicious. Â My favorite meals are the stuffed French toast and the eggs Benedict (a special, but it is on the list frequently). Â
For dinner, they have fancy, expensive meals that are delicious. Â However, you can also ask for their breakfast/lunch menu if you are trying to save money. Â Great for groups, dates, friends---- anything and everything!
My Mom lives in the area and had heard about this place... she wanted to go for a while so we stopped in over a recent visit. Â Being from Sothern Ca., I have pretty high expectations for any vegan/vegetarian/healthy/fresh, bla... bla... bla... shops and their offerings. After loading ourselves with Kumas Corner and Italian Beef in Chicago, we were in need of some greens and freshness.
This place was really good. Atmosphere is bright, clean and cheerful (extra points in Winter I'm sure).
We started with the Hummus platter - 2 Stars (I love hummus... eat it a lot, flavor was missing, it was bland. It is homemade and maybe was just off that day... ) Â
Salads - 4 Stars super yummy homemade dressings, very good variety of fresh ingredients (would have been a perfect 5 but one salad was covered in raw red onions - WAY over bearing), chicken sandwich - 4 Stars (good flavor/bread), veggie burger - 4.5 Stars (homemade, fresh, tasty, good bread), caprese sandwich - 4.5 stars (the tapenade was awesome and made the sandwich, bread was yummy)
Excellent local beer selection - 5 Stars
Service -5 Stars (prompt, checked in when we need him and stayed on top of our drinks, but didn't bug us)
Overall - I would be a regular if I were in the area. Good Stuff and my cardiologist thanks them.
I really believe everyone is giving 5 stars and saying they like this place only because it's upscale and they feel special and smug saying, "Why, indeed, Uptown Kitchen is my favorite place to dine occasionally; would you like another spot of tea?"
Anyway, for a fancy-shmancy place, even the Hibachi Grill has better quality food. Granted, the beet bisque was good, but that was all. For my main dish I ordered some ridiculously high-priced chicken breast, which was an itty-bitty, shitty-gritty slab of meat made up of mostly grizzle. It came with a few (literally, a few) green beans and that was it. My husband and I left this place so damn hungry and poor. There really is no need to over-charge for poor-quality meat. Please, before serving something, make the cook inspect the meat before giving it to a paying customer. That grizzle was uncalled for. Perhaps add an additional side to the chicken breast dinner as well. Â Maybe a few kernels of corn or something, geeze.
This is one of the few restaurants in the area that caters to us vegetarians (even vegans) and as a new resident, I am so grateful for Uptown Kitchen. Â The food has been consistently good, creative and healthy. Â The atmosphere is elegant but not off-putting and the service is exceptional. Â I anticipate eating many meals here.
Review Source:I had an amazing Sunday brunch. I ate the shrimp and andouille sausage over cheese grits and it was amazing. Lots of flavor and the perfect portion size . Also the table of 4 I was with shared the lemon ricotta pancakes witch the sweet perfectly balanced the spicy. Overall a wonderful experience. I want to go back and try this place sometime for dinner
Review Source:For south bend, A-. A bit of a mish-mash menu (Asian, Italian, southwest, etc.). Good service. Definitely trying to "chef things up". Pretty good execution. Only 1 vegetarian entree, but somewhat creative-- not just some lame pasta. Seasonal antipasto platter. Â In fact, seasonal veg are a welcome theme - especially for such a meat-o-centric menu.
Review Source:Absolutely one of my favorite restaurants. Â Very clean, urban, trendy, healthy, delicious food. Â I cannot recommend Uptown enough. Â The specials are ALWAYS great. Â Very friendly, prompt, accomodating wait staff. Â I love going here for brunch. Â It can be a bit crouded, but always worth the wait. Â
The Owner has a tendency of personally coming by your table and thanking you for coming in. Â He does a great job with this place and also the mark.
I nice higher end place for the South Bend area. Â Price is a little high for South Bend, but compared to Chicago it is quite managable. Â Plus you pay for what you get, top notch food with new and creative spins. Â I'd come back here any day of the week for brunch and for the baked goods!
Review Source:This place is pretty good, but don't come for dinner unless you are prepared to spend at least $25.00 per entree. This isn't to say anything negative about the place however I felt like the $$ rating given by Yelpers was kind of inaccurate, at least at dinner. Â But I had driven really far to get here, I was really hungry, and I wasn't about to go eat pizza across the street, so I had rack of lamb with cilantro yogurt sauce with curried couscous and green beans/carrots. Would eat again.
Review Source:Mom, I ate all my Brussels sprouts!! The food, atmosphere and service were consistently great. Thanks Uptown for accommodating me and my silly requests. I needed some food to go for a trip the next day, the server had agreed that they would put some sandwiches together for us, by the time we placed the order the kitchen had closed. The manager came over, took my additional order and I believe ended up making the sandwiches himself, keeping everything separate so it would be fresh the next day. They were delicious. Strangely enough I look forward to my next trip to South Bend.
Review Source:I travel quite a bit for work and consequently do a bit of dining out. Recently, as a means of dealing with health complaints, found my way to something called the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Essentially, the diet is an elimination diet that aims to improve gastrointestinal health (along with other areas of health). What makes this diet unique is that it removes grains, starches and most sugars. Add that to an already pre-existing issue with dairy and one can only imagine the difficulty in finding food one does not specifically prepare.
Doing some research, I came across Uptown Kitchen and sent an email to inquire about items on the menu that fit the bill or could be adapted to suit my needs. Less than 24 hours later, I got my response.
I was assured that not only could they accommodate me, but that such consideration to food sensitivities were a part of their practice.
When I came in, I was warmly greeted and sat at an exquisite looking table (I enjoyed the decor very much). Â When my server came, I let her know what I was looking to accomplish. Â Even though my intent was to contact the restaurant ahead of time in order to save the server from making multiple trips to the kitchen, this ended up happening. Â The server was very knowledgeable and did an excellent job of helping me find food on the menu. Â Unfortunately, because this diet is rare, and I'm new to it, there still was some occasional doubt. Â My server gladly went back several times. Â She picked up on what I was hoping to eat and what I was willing to settle for and went out of her way to find a way to deliver what I hoped for.
For me, this was an exemplary service as I have Asperger's and this tends to leave me often too shy to ask so much of others (despite being the customer). Â All too often I simply accept less than what I want out of hesitancy to simply ask. Â My server, and the preceding conversation before had made the task of sticking to my rigid dietary restrictions that much easier--and this was the first time I asked a server to go out of their way for me. Â It was genuinely a great experience.
I would absolutely recommend this place to my friends and definitely will be back when I visit.
I give Uptown 2 stars because of the service. Â My friend and I came in for lunch. Â Because we are over 21, they sat us in the bar. Â This wouldn't have been a problem if they hadn't sat us at a tiny table! Â When our food came, there wasn't enough room on the table for my salad and 1/2 sandwich nor my friend's soup, soda, and pancakes. Â After getting my sandwich, I asked for mayo which never arrived. Â When I asked another passing server for my mayo, he delivered it and somehow became our waiter as he assisted us for the duration of our meal. Â We finished our meal with a piece of Red Velvet cake. Â The cake was very dry and didn't taste good. Â We would have been better skipping dessert altogether. Â I probably won't come back. Â I'm glad that SB has some nicer places in town but I don't think I'll come back here again.
Review Source:Hands down, my all time favorite restaurant in town. (Although there isn't a ton in South Bend to compare to) It is the best!
I love the fresh ingredients, unique pairings, friendly and quick service (even if there is an hour wait, it's still fast), and the phenomenal food!
I recommend the Chicken Avocado Club. I get this wonderful sandwich every single time I go. Â I figure, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Soooooo delicious! I get it on toasted sourdough, although you can get whatever bread you like, and it has grilled chicken, avocado, sprouts, red onion, tomato, and a cilantro-lime mayo that is AMAZING!
I get a side salad with my sandwich and they also make their own homemade dressings too! My favorite is the garlic parsley. Â Also, their fruit smoothies are so fresh and healthy! I have gotten the Berry Blast and its to die for!
All in all, there are not enough good things to say about this place. Â You will even enjoy the funky, artsy decor, bright colors, and awesome artwork. Â This place ALMOST makes you feel like you're not in South Bend. :)
I am new to the area and after hearing rave reviews about Up Town Kitchen I was eager to try it for myself. Â An out of town visitor and I visited it this morning and I found the place to be bright cheery and the staff to be friendly and welcoming.
Excited to try my omlett and uptown fries - I wound up slightly more than disappointed in my meal. Â I have gone back many times sense, and each time have been less that thrilled with the breakfast outcome. Â Perhaps its just high expectations that are keeping me from loving my choices. Â I have always enjoyed the lunch and dinner items though.
I always enjoy the unique offerings here. There creative use of very fresh and top end ingredients always shows up on the plate. I am a sucker for all day breakfast and they really deliver on a fantastic level for breakfast lovers. My son has a strict gluten free diet and they do a fantastic job with gluten free chef on staff.
Last night I enjoyed the Lemon Ricotta cheese pancakes. Light and moist, these were really delicious.
I look forward to eating at their new location when they move 200 meters south in January of 2011.
Had a great breakfast here with my boyfriend's family (there was a large group of us) early on a Saturday morning. The atmosphere was fun and totally unexpected! (Not typical for what I've seen in my few trips to "South Bend/Granger.) The cakes on display looked awesome and almost made me forget we were there for breakfast.
I ordered the Julia's Scramble (a.k.a. omelet) with spinach, goat cheese and tomatoes. The eggs were on the runny side, but since I eat over-easy eggs occasionally it wasn't a huge deal. I also tend to make my omelets at home with a lot more spinach and cheese, but it was still good!! I had a wonderful time and look forward to going back!
For south bend this place it tops!
The breakfast/brunches are as good as any real city. Why? Because the owner came here from Chicago and wanted to bring along the sort of brunch place he and his wife loved in Chicago (she is from Indiana I think).
The breakfasts are awesome, and the cob salad is perfect! The OJ is to die for as well. I prefer my dressing on the side, but had it mixed in here a few times. I have been here on a Friday for dinner as well and enjoyed myself quite a bit. Â These folks love what they do and will talk about the food.
What don't I like? The One piece of toast trend! Places in Chicago do this and it pisses me off, and when they did it here I was a bit miffed. I want two pieces of toast (in four slices) with my breakfast!
Uptown Kitchen is the best local, organic restaurants in the Michiana area! Â We are so lucky to have a restaurant of this quality in our area and I always am happy I came whether I drop in for breakfast, lunch or dinner!
Uptown Kitchen specializes in organic, local ingredients and attention to detail. Â The restaurant itself is funky, large, inviting and has a good sized outdoor patio to enjoy a nice, summer evening. Â Unfortunately, your view won't give you more than the parking lot and the stores and restaurants across it.
Uptown Kitchen is a go to place for breakfast with egg white, made to order omelets and great coffee and a ton of healthy choices to choose from. Â For lunch, their hummus platter can't be missed along with their reuben sandwich with cole slaw - the BEST and I hate cole slaw! Â They have great soups too - my favorite is their butternut squash soup - I look forward to it every fall!
In the past couple of years, Uptown Kitchen started offering dinner and we have never been disappointed with anything we have ordered. Their dinner specials are rather expensive so if you want to save a little bit of money, you can request them to bring you their breakfast/lunch menu to order from instead. Â They also have a respectable wine list and we have enjoyed many a bottle of wine on their outdoor patio with friends.
Finally - the desserts at Uptown Kitchen are to die for! Â My husband is not a dessert person and every time we visit, we have to share at least one of their wonderful choices, Â My favorite is their raspberry champagne cake - trust me, you must try it.
The owner and his family are extremely friendly and welcoming and the best part of the charm of this restaurant. Â You could find yourself dining right next to his kids on any Saturday or Sunday morning. Â For a unique, personal, local dining experience, be sure to check out Uptown Kitchen!
We live in Chicago and Uptown Kitchen is as cool and colorful as any place I have been to in Chicago. Â We make it a stop every time we come into town. Â There is such a great variety of food choices and the owner always makes us feel at home. Â
Great coffee, unique breakfast dishes and great pancakesn (although there are many wonderful lunch and dinner choices, I always get breakfast), fabulous ambience and lighting, friendly service. Â Amazing looking desserts, but I have never ordered any. Â Very clean. Â We absolutely love it!
I feel like I have an aversion to giving five stars away to anything, because it represents a sort of perfection that is fairly rare, but I LOVE this place.
Uptown kitchen has a funky, super-fun, colorful vibe that you won't normally find in a city of this size. The atmosphere feels welcoming for families and upscale at the same time. All of the staff are friendly and professional with an easy-going attitude that still conveys complete knowledge about the DELISH food.
Starting with the coffee, everything we ate was so fresh and full of flavor. The side salads are available with numerous house-made dressings and the cilantro-based one is great - a little kick of summer despite the snow outside. For lunch I had the Turkey Club (NOT as boring as you may think, people). Piled high with turkey, spinach, avocado, bacon, muenster cheese and raspberry mayo, the sandwich was a yummy twist on a classic.
Despite my engaging wit and beauty, the two guys I was there with were completely immersed in their food. While one took advantage of the all-day breakfast concept and indulged in a cinnamon stuffed French Toast with peanut butter and raspberry and some fluffy cream cheese on top, the other had the lunch burrito with chicken in a jalapeno-cilantro tortilla and other fun things inside like black and white bean relishes and salsa on the side.
When the owner came over to the table and spoke with us, he was very eager to please and you could tell this restaurant was truly his "baby." He informed us they will be obtaining a wine license in the coming month as well as moving into the dinner category as well. I wish more people could adapt a big-city aesthetic to a smaller community as well as this family has with the Uptown Kitchen.
