Not sure what happened, but I have been to this restaurant at least 4 or 5 times before tonight, but they fell flat today. Â I ordered the 3 meat platter, getting the sausage, brisket, and the chopped pork. Â First off, the chopped pork was cold, as in like it had been taken out of the refrigerator to be thawed sorta cold. Secondly, my brisket looked like one of those old women who are obsessed with tanning and are crafted from old boot leather. Â I am guessing it spent quite a lot of time under a heat lamp before it made it to my plate. Â The sausage was the only redeeming feature of my entire entree.
I wasn't the only one with similar issues. Â My father in law's chopped pork was cold, too (so we must have gotten ours from the same batch) and my mother in law's Urban Legend was luke warm. Â What made matters worse, the replacement she got for her original was also luke warm. Â Then the free deserts we got as a result of the terrible food was ICE COLD in the middle. Â If this had been some sort of ice cream that would be fine, but it was supposed to be apple crumb/brown betty and it was cold.
The final insult was our waitress, who continually seemed to be busy with everyone else but us, which is a shame since we tip really really well normally.
We went there this Monday for dinner and to drown our government shutdown sorrows. Â I have to say - this place has the best barbecue in the area. Â Will certainly go back. Â Great selection of local and craft brews, fantastic ribs, brisket, collard greens, and good (not great) service. Â Hell - it's a bunch of college kids, so I'm giving them a break. Â Otherwise, fantastic food and a great gem in Sandy Spring.
Review Source:Easily the best BBQ in the region. Â Very cool little place, reminds me of the hole in the wall BBQ joints back in Alabama and Mississippi. Â They bring you a little bucket of peanuts to shell and eat while you're checking out the menu. Â I've always found the wait staff to be very friendly.
Specials are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Â Happy hour is 4 - 7. Â They do have a full bar and a large area for take out orders.
I'm normally a pork guy but at Urban, I usually order their brisket. Â The pork is somewhat below my expectations, not bad, but tends to be overly broken up and pre-sauced like it's kept ready to plate in a warming tray.
The brisket, however, always appears fresh sliced and is tender with a heavy smoke ring. Â Some of the best brisket I've had. Â
Sides are nice and the salads and hamburgers are great if you have folks in your group that aren't in the mood for BBQ. Â
They have other locations around town but this one, although out of the way for us, is our favorite. Â Try it, I think you'll like it.
Picked up an order the other day. Everything seemed kinda enh... Pretty salty. Even the cornbread was salty and a bit bitter. Ribs were decent. Sauce was okay. Brisket was cooked right. Tender. Which is probably the only thing right, except there was like no sauce. So I guess that was wrong too. Chili was salty too.. Overall decent food. Over priced for what it is.
Review Source:We went there for dinner after three hours of hard work at the Adventure Park in Sandy Spring. Â We had 9 and 10 years old amongst us. Â Kids meals are pretty decent in pricing. Â Not all kids meals come with a side. Â Mac and Cheese does not. Â However, if you get the chicken nuggets, corn dog, you will get a side at no extra cost. Â You can get Mac and Cheese, sweet potato tot as a side. Â One of my kids ordered Mac and Cheese as a side and it came out the same size as the Mac and Cheese as the meal. Â Strange. Â
We tried their ribs and found it on the dry side. Â For a BBQ company, it was disappointing. Â We also enjoyed the wings. Â I ordered a BBQ chicken salad and it was yum. Â Â
The price is decent and the service is hit or miss depends on the servers.
I ate in the restaurant after they opened a while back, food was cool and not hot. Service wasn't good. Came back again a few months ago dined inside, received good service, but again the food was cold even the fries. My brisket was cool also. You could tell it had good flavor... Such a shame I love BBQ too. Well I thought maybe its their warming window is just inadequate in their kitchen, so I tried to order carry out. I was there when the food was finished and bagged . I received the food hot and drove 8 minutes home and the food was still warmer than it was when I dined in both times. I will return but only carry out . Take my advice take out only
Review Source:Just picked up a brisket sandwich as I was in a hurry to get to a meeting. I really did not look at the menu. Put a mixture of their barbeque sauce and their hot sauce on the sandwich. The spices and the heat worked well together. I had to eat the sandwich in the car but really enjoyed it. Planning on stopping by when I can really look at the menu and eat at a slower pace.
Review Source:Let me start off by saying the 4 stars are primarily for customer service not so much the food.
I ordered a full rack of ribs fries and corn bread. When the ribs came we dug right in maybe 2 or 3 ribs or so. They were cold, really cold. Here is where the 4 stars come from, Â I sent the ribs back and asked the waitress to reheat the rack. While I was waiting I started to eat the corn bread. It was wrapped in plastic and was as stale as could be. I couldn't believe they actually brought corn bread that hard to the table. Between the two I was rather turned off.
I had also ordered wings. They came nice and hot. They were quite good. After some time, and brand new full rack of ribs comes out. I was quite impressed with that as I was expecting my previous partially eaten and nuked rack back. Also was pleasantly surprised to get yet another piece of wrapped corn bread. This one however was soft, fresh and good. It was a bit odd - It didn't come with hand we weren't offered butter.
Ok, so for the ribs, they were still not really "hot" more like warm. Not sure what the issue was in the kitchen where they couldn't get the ribs hot. Â We had been there too long and I didn't want to sit around any longer so I just dealt w/it. Â Ate a few of them and they were just ok, nothing special, just ok. I thought they were a bit on the dry side but my friend liked them so who knows.
Waitress could tell we were done and very quickly brought us a to go box to take home the food we didn't eat. My friend had a chicken sandwich. Again, thought the meat was dry and there was a lot or either paprika or rub sprinkled on the sandwich and all over her plate. The sandwich was also just ok - nothing remarkable or special.
The service was great, unfortunately, the food was just so-so. Maybe the kitchen was just having issues Sunday.
Well, two months have passed since I emailed my May 5, 2012 review to the owners. Â Not only did I NOT receive an apology from them, I never hear anything from them! Â If that's what the owners of a restaurant feel is appropriate when a customer takes the time to write a detailed accoount of a disasterous dinner at their establishment, then I encourage people NOT TO EAT THERE! Â I haven't been to their Rockville location since the awful experience in Sandy Spring, and I will now NEVER go back to ANY Urban Bar-B-Que. Â You should do the same!
Review Source:I drive past this restaurant every single day, and I finally stopped in for a carry out lunch sandwich. Â As my father would have said, the sandwich was nothing but kneecaps and elbows (tendons and gristle). Â I ordered a simple pulled chicken sandwich and took it back to the office to eat. Â It was absolutely horrendous! Â There were more tendons and hunks of fat and gristle than seemed possible on a single sandwich. Â The roll had to be the cheapest roll they could find. Â Surprisingly, I didn't care for the bbq taste at all, and I like almost any kind of bbq sauce. Â I recognize that bbq sauce is more a matter of personal preference, but there's no excuse for a popular, successful restaurant with a seemingly solid reputation serving a sandwich that was this pitiful. Â Maybe they were out of good rolls and they had to improvise on this particular day. Â Maybe the bbq sauce just isn't my cup of tea. Â But mouthful after mouthful of "kneecaps and elbows" isn't something I can get past. Â In fact, I couldn't even finish the sandwich, which is a rarity for me. Â And it was bad enough that I definitely won't be giving this restaurant a second chance.
Review Source:This was my first time here and it will be my last. The brisket was tough and when I complained about it, the waitress just said, "You probably got the end." and she walked away. Never offered to comp it or get me replacement food. It wasn't the end it just wasn't cooked long enough.
The chopped pork was moist and tender but tasted like roasted pork with bottled BBQ sauce, kind of like cafeteria food.
The baked beans were no better than canned and tasted strong of chili powder and sugar, but not much else.
The cornbread came out wrapped in plastic and cold! No butter was offered.
The sauces were mediocre. There was a tomato based sauce with liquid smoke in it that was ok. There was a vinegar sauce that was the pits and a honey mustard sauce that quite good but I would never use it on BBQ.
I know BBQ and this place is my local favorite!! For an appetizer, I highly recommend the Urban Soul Rolls (A "BBQ" eggroll with brisket, sweet onions and three cheeses. Served with Redneck Fondue for dippin') AMAZING. Â Â
You cant go wrong with any of the entree options. Â The burgers are delicious but why go to a BBQ joint and not get a BBQ staple; Brisket, Chicken, Ribs, Pork? Â The brisket is slow cooked to perfection. Â the pink smoke ring says it all. Â The pork has to be one of my favorites. Â People in the BBQ world say a pork butt is the most forgiving meat to smoke but Urban BBQ has perfected it. Â Try it dry or with one of their amazing sauces, you cant go wrong.
For a side, I recommend the Mac and Cheese. Â Urban BBQ's Mac and Cheese is my all time favorite (don't tell my mom). Â The cornbread is amazing as well.
I am guilty of passing Urban Bar-B-Que on a regular basis, and each time saying "I've got to try that place!" Â Well, last night, I did.
My husband and I stopped in on a whim, and were so glad that we did. Â We actually came in a side door, and walked in facing the bar. Â Immediately, we were happy with the selection on tap. Â
The menu selection wasn't huge, however, everything sounded so good that we had a hard time deciding on what to order. Â We ended up splitting two meals, the barbeque chicken (1/2 chicken) and Chilli Mac-Daddy (chilli on top of mac and cheese). Â
Everything came out relatively quick, and tasted amazing! Â I am a finicky barbeque eater, and the chicken was one of the best I've tasted. Â I added some additional sauce on it, I can't remember the name, but it was vinegar based. Â It was a bit tangy, but I enjoyed it. Â
After a great main course, we split a piece of the key lime pie for dessert. Â We loved that, too.
All in all, we decided quickly that we would be back. Â The service and food, combined with a fun atmosphere made for a great dinner experience!
Overall, it was pretty good.  The ambiance was a cowboy type kitsch but it works.  The tables are covered with brown paper like some crab houses have and it has extra paper towels, handiwipes and their BBQ sauces.  The food is presented on chuck wagon like tin plates  They also have a self serve peanut station.
I had the chile for an appetizer and it was excellent. Â It comes with the extras (cheese, green onions and sour cream) on the side and I had mine with cornbread (excellent... Moist and delicious). Â I then had the two meat combo which was the pork and beef (brisket) with tortillas (you have a choice of a roll, cornbread or flour tortilla) and French fries (I don't know what they do with them but dang... it's ranks high among my favs). Both the beef and pork were tender and seasoned perfectly.
Price wise it's competitive as you get quite a bit of food for the price. Â Cornbread is big and the give you a bowl of chili which could have been an entree by itself. Â Needless to say I ate way too much but it was mm, mm good. 4 stars because it was good but BBQ is not my go to food.
The chile and wings are addictive. The hearty chile has pieces of brisket along with more goodness. The wings are twice cooked and avail with different sauces. Sometimes less said is better, try for yourself. You will be back!
I have eaten and a few Urban BBQ restaurants, but feel this is superior to the others and it has a bar area. Food comes out quick and hot.
Great addition to Sandy spring. Thanks Urban BBQ owners.
When I try a new place these days I expect mediocrity and this place sure delivered. The waitress was pleasant but disappeared for long stretches. The appetizers were forgettable. The ribs were just ok. I've had mouth-watering savory delectable ribs before but this place didn't measure up. The decor was kind of cheesy. If it wasn't for the bartender who was very helpful (refilling our beers and locating our waitress when needed - thanks man), I'd have to give this place 2 stars. I won't be back.
Review Source:Its a little off the beaten path, but once you find it, you are greeted by some great barbq and a good beer selection. Â
Since visiting this place for the first time, the "Urban Burger" which is right next to my neighborhood, has been converted to "Urban BBQ", so now I've got even easier access to all the amazing BBQ I want.
I am not a BBQ connoisseur but I do have my occasional BBQ cravings. This location is pretty far from civilization but on route 108 which is on my route to home/work. I ordered the 1/2 Slab which has 6 Bones and it comes with 1 small side & bread for $13.99. This entree came with overwhelming portions! The ribs feel a little flat for me. I had to douse them in sauces (provided by the table side) and the edges were overly burnt. The meat near the center of the rib was nice and fell right off the bone. I wish my ribs were cooked more uniformly. The sides were pretty good. I have a weak spot for cornbread and it was moist and flavorful.
Review Source:As the daughter of a butcher, I'm picky about meat. Yeah, I said it. This is pretty standard barbeque...but that said, I find NOTHING wrong with that. Â The meat can occasionally be a touch dry, but the sauces are good, especially the nice vinegar heavy Carolina style. Â The highlight of the menu for me, though, is...wait for it...2 homemade corndogs smothered in "redneck fondue"- basically queso...so wrong. And so right. Plus, its cheap, they're open late, and have great football and happy hour prices. No frills...just meat. Oh, and smashing collards.
Review Source:I so want to give these guys 5 stars. I really like this place. I was just there and I think I saw one of the owners in action. A real nice, patient guy that takes care of the customers.
Decor is just what you'd expect from a bar-b-que place. Useful paper towels, wipes and utensils hung next to your table.
A wide assortment of sauces, from mustard, vinegar, to spicy. Nothing to sweet, which is fine for me. I prefer the North Carolina Vinegar any day. They have draft root beer (yeah!), two kinds of tea, etc.
The food I've tasted so far is fantastic. I love the sides! Coleslaw is nice and not sweet like most guys make it. Seems homemade, with what looks like parsley. Taste great. Beans have chunks of pork and are not overly sweet. Hand cut fries are plentiful with great potato taste. Pull pork is juicy and full of flavor.
The biggest disappointment are the ribs. They are just good. I had to taste them a second time, to be fair, prior to this review. They don't have much of a bark to bark about. They are dry even with the sauce. They are not baby back, so of course not as tender, but there is just something lacking in the most important dish. Now don't be discouraged, if you want ribs, go get some. They are good. Just not great.
It is hard to find good ribs. I've always thought Houston's made the best in town. However, since they closed their Rockville locations, this is the best rib joint in Rockville.
Please Urban guys, rethink your style for cooking ribs. Otherwise, fantastic job. Also, the prices are completely reasonable.
Those dragon honey bbq wings have been haunting me in my sleep since I had dinner at Urban BBQ. They were tender and juicy and tangy and just a little sweet and oh-so-perfect. They were to die for. Every time I get in my car, I feel a magnetic pull toward this place, and it's only a matter of time until I can't resist it any longer. Urban has a great atmosphere and some of the best southern-style bbq in the area. This is definitely the place to go for the Washingtonian barbeque enthusiast. You can be sure I will be back.
Note: the parking lot fills up quickly on weekends, and there aren't too many other parking options around.
I passed by this place on the way from BWI to Olney and was excited to find a local BBQ place to satisfy my carnivorous ways. Â I'm a self proclaimed BBQ fanatic and having lived many years in Texas I've eaten my weight in most barbecued meats.
The restaurant in situated just off of Olney Sandy Spring Rd and is very bright and visible with its blue paint and red roof. Â They have an eclectically decorated dining room with lots of Americana. Â There were plenty of TV's going to keep me up on my Sportscenter fix. Â I'm sure with the large dining room and patio that its probably easy to get a table.
I had the 2 meat plate with Brisket and Pulled Pork. Â The brisket had good flavor which is important. Â Great BBQ doesn't necessarily need sauce. Â I thought it was a touch on the cool side by the time it made it in front of me. Â The pulled pork was served on the all important white bread and was good but not as good as the brisket. Â The pork was a touch dry and benefited from the sauce.
There were 3 BBQ sauces. Â One of a normal flavor, one vinegar based and one mustard based. Â I really enjoyed the normal BBQ sauce. Â It was sweet without being too sugary.
The dish was served with one side. Â I had the BBQ Beans. Â They were piping hot and had almost too much of a BBQ sauce taste. Â There was a limited selection of other sides to choose from also. Â I wish they had had a green beans side in addition to the collard greens offered. Â But lest we forget, sides are an afterthought at most great BBQ places. Â So I'll let it pass...
The cornbread served was wrapped in clear wrap. Â It was clearly made a lot earlier and was a touch dry even for being wrapped for freshness.
I think this was a great local BBQ place and it was a great find while traveling. Â I would highly recommend its slow roasted meats!
The wife and I were looking to get some BBQ and we wanted to try someplace new, as we love to explore food establishments. After doing a search on Yelp, we figured that this would be a nice place to try out, boy were we right.
First off, if you want to watch a game or games, this is the place to go. There are a dozen flat screen televisions with everything from NFL network to the Golf Channel and everything in between. I was watching the Shell Houston Open and my wife was watching the side of my turned head.
This place has some great food! We started with fries smothered in gravy, as that is a face of mine. Â The gravy was very tasty, the only complaint was that for $6, I felt there should have been more. I would like to try the fires smothered in cheese and bacon though. We moved onto our entrees, which consisted of the sausage and pulled pork platter for me and the brisket for the wife.
Both of my dishes had great flavor, was tender, and the wife seemed to enjoy her selection as well. I'm not a huge brisket fan, so I can't really speak about comparing it to other places. The sauces are on the table and you have the choice between red, yellow and green. Â The red is a BBQ sauce, and was a little too sweet for me. The yellow is a mustard based sauce, and it definitely was a tad spicy. The green is a cider based sauce, and when you mix it with the yellow, I felt the flavors just mixed great. I do wish they had something with more kick, but that's about it.
In terms of sides, I know this sounds contrary to what you should get at a BBQ restaurant, but I had the caesar salad. The salad itself was unspectacular, however the dressing wasn't. It was some kind of southwestern caesar dressing. It was addicting! Hell, I think I would go here just to get the chicken caesar salad.
On to dessert, which we weren't planning on getting, but that fried Twinkie sounded too good to pass up. Trust me, get the Twinkie. It made you feel like you just went to the county fair. It was super hot, so it was nice paired with the ice cream.
We'll still hit up Kloby's, because it is closer, but we will definitely come back to Urban BBQ.
So delicious! I visited the Sandy Spring location but they have restaurants in Rockville and Hillandale. Everything is reasonably priced with generous portions. Excellent BBQ flavors and I loved that they had the different styles of BBQ sauce at the table. They have a ton of micro-breweries on tap which was a pleasant surprise! The sides where fresh and just the right size. Our waitress was so nice and personable which totally made our experience that much better! The overall appearance and feel of the restaurant is laid-back but fun! Has the potential to be a regular spot!
Review Source:I have only come here for takeout and catering, but this weekend we decided to grab a table and eat in. The dining area makes the Olney location unique from Rockville and Silver Spring, where you just order at the counter and serve yourself. When I walk into restaurants and see primarily teens waiting tables I prepare myself for mediocre or bad service. However Olney Urban BBQ really impressed me. Not only was my server extremely friendly and attentive, but I noticed that many of the servers were taking pride in their work and seemed to enjoy working there. I will keep coming back, not only for the great food but also the great staff!
Review Source:Nothing says BBQ like an afternoon at the theater. Â We stopped to eat here since a friend had noticed it a few days before while driving by. Â The atmosphere is everything you'd expect. Â I got the 2 meat platter (chicken and brisket) which came with a side (mac n cheese) and finished it off with a Dominion Root Beer. Â Maybe it's house root beer, but they use dominion taps? Â Either way, I was excited to see that the root beer DID come out of a tap, instead of the soda machine. Â We sat outside on some newly installed picnic benches to eat in the early evening sun. Â I'm not frequently in Olney, but if I were, I'd make this a regular spot. Â Good food, staff that remember your name, outdoor seating, and a nice bar area too.
