Cozy place, good for relatively short dine in.
We expected the sausages to be a bit bigger than they were. The sausages were good, we just weren't blown away. The avocado on the southwest wasn't detectable by my hubby or it may have been missing altogether.
The fries are a huge portion. Two people can split 1 fry. The fries were good. Cooked well and slightly fluffy.
They had cans of pop, it would've been nice to have fountain drinks. It didn't seem like there was enough ketchup bottles for as many tables as they have. It wasn't tremendously crowded and we had to use ketchup packets at first. An employee needed to go in back to get napkins.
We're interested in coming back and trying some of the other sausages.
Thought I reviewed this over the summer when I first tried it but I guess not... so here's two reviews in one!
First time I got the Southwest, spicy chicken sausage with avocado ranch and pepperjack. Â Yum, delicious. Â A little pricey for just the sausage but I get it, it's specialty. Â Avocado ranch always wins.
Yesterday I went for a late lunch and got the Philly, a steak sausage with onions, green peppers and provolone. Â I wasn't overly crazy about this one. Â There's probably a reason steak doesn't make great sausage, it was a little dry and non-fatty compared to some of the pork sausages and needed a bit more spice.
The place itself is interesting, I dig the artwork on the walls and the bright colors but it feels a little un-done. Â Like the Sweater Song. Â
Service is not exactly lightening fast here either. Â If you're dining in or not in much of a hurry, it's no big deal but to run in and out is about 10 minutes wait.
Also, closing at 3pm every day? Â What about people who live in the neighborhood but do not work in the neighborhood who like hot dogs for dinner? Â Bummer.
I prefer to buy from a small business and was glad to see this place offer an alternative to "Subway". However this place needs to learn the value of service.
Above average food, WAY below average service. Third time in a week I went in to place an order and found NOBODY behind the counter.
Waited several minutes, still nothing.
I hope they consider migrating to a self-service model because as-is this place will never make it.
Good: Food was decent but not anything really special. I would classify the place as reliable.
Bad: the Sunday help just sucked. Person chopping food in the front also handled money without washing hands or wearing gloves. Asked if they had water and got a blank look followed by a "no". Â Fries are not fresh cut but frozen. Sorry, Chicago is a premiere hot dog town and if you're trying to be premium, you have to have good fresh fries.
Like I said. Food is okay but service was terrible, questionable hygiene and frozen fries doesn't cut it.
I ended up here after finding Hot Doug's closed the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I had high hopes for this place since it's not to far from my work, but I was disappointed with the food and the service.
The guy behind the counter had a bit of an attitude, he might be fine on other days but that day he wasn't very helpful with descriptions, nor did he offer any suggestions for Westminster newbies.
They were all out of the #7 Apple Sage and #8 Southwest, I hope to go back to try the #7 one day. Between my friend and I, we tried #10 Steak Fromage, #12 Bacon Jalapeno, the Thanksgiving (Terduken?) Sausage, the Chicago Dog, and their fries.
#10 was dry and unimpressive.
#12 was decent, it had a nice kick but didn't leave me craving it again.
TG sausage was pretty good, it had a full flavor and worth going back for (too bad it was a special)
The Chicago Dog was terrible. The toppings were okay but the dog they use was horrible, it was mushy, lacked in a snappy casing, and didn't have much of a flavor. I'm not sure if that's how all Red Hot Chicago dogs are or if it was just sitting in the boiler for the past couple of days. When order a Chicago Style I expect Vienna Beef or custom dog, so maybe it's my fault for expecting too much. But I would have preferred a ball park frank over that thing.
Their fries were nothing to write home about.
I'll give this place one more try at another date. I'll see if one of their Specialty Sausages can change my rating.
Pretty sure the guy at the register had pink eye- 90% sure of it! Disgusting!
He made no conversation what so ever with us. We brought our two little boys and no one else was in the restaurant eating. I ordered a chili cheese dog which was really good. My husband order a philly sandwich of some sort. He said it was awful, really dry so I complained and they gave him something else. They didn't offer any other beverages besides pop and water, was looking for juice or something for the kiddos!
Couldn't find napkins, forks, or knives anywhere. I snuck into the kitchen to grab a few myself. Not sure if I'll go back.
Went to this place because there was a Groupon Now deal-- drink, fried, and sausage for $5. I walked in around 2:30, no one was there but the guy behind the counter. I asked him what he recommended and went with his pick- the Steak Fromage. Order came out in like 5 minutes which was great.
Really loved the fries, they were nice and hot and a touch salty. I love that they had ginger ale too. The sausage was interesting, just a bit dry. :( The toppings of cheese spread and some kind of wine sauce was tasty but the sausage itself was dry that it took away from the whole meal. Not sure I'd order that again but some of the other sausages they had sounded really interesting.
I can't say enough about mom and pop shops that take pride in producing a high-quality product...Westminster Hot Dog does just that.
I was a fixture at this place for several months and I enjoyed every bite of it. Â Here is a list of my top five favorite sausages and a quick review of each:
(1) Cherry Chicken BBQ - Delicious cumin spice with a nice savory-sweet cherry BBQ sauce and smoked cheddar cheese. Â My absolute favorite.
(2) Country Bacon...yes, country bacon. It's amazing, but I can't eat it every day. - Wonderful smokey, maple flavor that pairs very well with the spice mix used in the pork sausage. And do not be turned off by the raspberry caramel sauce.
(3) Southwest - This is one of their regular sausage offerings and it is wonderful. Nice spicy Cayenne/Paprika flavor, but not overwhelming, that pairs wonderfully with the avocado-ranch sauce and the pepper jack cheese. My mouth is watering right now...seriously.
(4) The Polish - Unbelievable. Enough said.
(5) Thai Curried Chicken - Exactly as described. Excellent curry flavor with a nice, sweet 'n' spicy peanut sauce and shaved carrots.
Honorable mention: Carolina BBQ, and Caribbean Jerk Chicken sausages.
Go there...now!
We ordered a big catering order today and was not dissapointed! Out of the large variety we tried to choose as many options as possible to taste. All of the sausages were grilled with a great snap! The toppings were all so different and tasty too! Absolutely recommend as a place to order from! The delivery was quick too! Thanks Westminster Hot Dog!
Review Source:I'm so happy that this place opened in the West Loop!!! Â The food is awesome and it doesn't hurt my pocket book. Plus the staff is super friendly and down to earth. Â When I first came in I was introduced to the menu and I had a lot of questions. Â The staff was/is knowledgeable and passionate about their food! Â I learned that most of the menu is homemade and everything is made to order. Â
So far I've tried about half the menu. Â Probably by the end of the summer I will have tried it all. Â --I'd love it if that would add deserts to their menu. Â
Nice work Westminster!! Keep up the good work!
Good food. Really good food. They recently opened and my boyfriend and I have gotten it three times already. The prices are also very reasonable for the quality of the meat and ingredients used. The only negative to the whole "Westminster Hot Dog" experience is the employees and the whole "shtick" they try to give you when you order. The first time you go there they will explain every little thing on the menu, along with their philosophy. Okay, fine. But each time you return, they will not only ask you if you have been there before (eagerly awaiting a "no" so they can tell you the whole shpiel), but even when we told them "yes" they asked us what we got last time, and made mundane chit chat with us. To be honest, it was so annoying that I almost don't want to go back- but the food is so good that I'm torn.
