The Whiskey Jar

The food was interesting but not as eclectic as I expected from all the talk I got from my friends. Mint julep is a tad too sweet so I am glad I ordered extra mint in it to balance it out. With that caveat, the mint julep on a hot summer night is highly recommended.

I got the trout. It was just a whole trout plopped over some vegetables. It was good, but not exemplary but I'm less and less excited about trout from most places these days. Presentation was good, service was excellent, the pickles were amazing.

It's a hipster gastropub (are all gastropubs hipster?) but overall, I left content. Is it my go-to place in Charlottesville? Prolly not, but I wouldn't say no.

So far, I've been to the Whiskey Jar twice, once for lunch and also for after-dinner dessert, and it made me wish I had not waited an entire year to visit.

Lunch: I had the BLT--and it was probably best BLT I've ever consumed in a restaurant. Perfect size and ratio of bacon, tomato, lettuce, and bread.

Dessert: I had the blackberry pie and my partner had the peach cobbler. The cobbler  easily served two, but it was so delicious that not a bite was left behind. The texture, crunch, and flavor of the pastry/crust was sublime, and the fruity part was not overly or sickly sweet (an all-too-common flaw). Their pie & cobbler now serves as the standard by which all others must measure up.

I look forward to going back soon for the dinner menu.

Great food. Outstanding bartender. Great music. Wonderful experience. Drank: whiskeys and beer. Ate: roasted beet salad, fried chicken.
