In Corpus Christi from out of town and I heard Whiskey River was the place to go on a Wednesday night, dollar drink night!? Sold! We got to the bar after dinner around 9pm and there were only a few locals drinking and two-stepping. I took a couple shots and got a beer and have so far spent only a whopping $8 with the $5 cover charge, this place is awesome! My coworker was drinking Coronas and even those were cheap at a mear $3.25, I feel like California screws me with their high priced over $6 a beer, while gems like this one exist! Also with a DJ named Twinkie how can you really go wrong?
We scoped out seats right on the edge of the dance floor so we could learn the local steps and before long a couple of cowboys were asking us to dance. All the guys in the bar were so extremely nice! They taught us how to two step and everyone helped us out with the line dances. Not bad for a couple of CA girls! When the hip hop music came on everyone crowded the floor some the booty shaking. The bar got really packed around 11pm, night and day from an hr earlier. I loved every second of this place and definitely would go back!
Be sure to check out the taxidermy raccoon in a mini canoe over the bar. He was my favorite.
This place has a ton of potential. I'm 19 and my fiance is about to turn 23, we are down here with the military so naturally I'm surrounded by numerous older people. We go to whiskey river alll the time and it's a lot of fun if you like to country dance like my fiance and I do. When getting into Whiskey River my I.D. is always checked and my hands get a big M on them and I get a different wrist band than everyone else gets and it is placed on my left wrist. I have no desire to drink while I'm there nor does it bother me that the people around me drink.
Naturally from dancing and sweating the big Ms on my hands come off...but isn't that what the bracelet is for? Apparently not. While coming off the dance floor one of the bouncers violently grabbed me (I weigh 110) and said I needed to come with him as he pushed me out of the door and said I needed to leave because I washed the Ms off of my hands. This guy is short but very bulky with a stupid mohawk. SO I was kicked out for doing absolutely nothing wrong. So every time after that when i went there I purposely kept going back to the bouncer to get more Ms on my hands. About a month later as I'm leaving Whiskey river the guy at the door says "what happened to your Ms?" which are still visible but warn off  while  my fiances finger tips were turned black from dancing with me all night. I look at him and all I could do was look at him and say "You are ridiculous, there's a cop right next to you, do you want to go ahead and give ma a breathalyzer because I would be more than happy to do that for you."
I understand that they have a job to do, but going after the same girl twice when I literally have done nothing wrong is ridiculous and their music choice there has gone down hill. I would rather go to "Gropers" than go back to Whiskey River and deal with the rude, accusatory personnel they have there.
POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE
I went to the WR with my wife and 2 other couples tonight. This was our first visit, (it was also our meeting point for the other two couples) I went outside to make a phone call where it wasn't so loud and when I went to go back inside I tripped over the carpet and the bouncer immediately said I was drunk and banned me from re-entering. I understand the bouncers position so I was polite and did not make a fuss but when I requested to speak with someone in management so they could make a better determination to my level of intoxication they just laughed and said "Get the GF*#@% out of here". I tried one more time to just re-enter without notice but was not successful. This is not our kind of hangout and we will not be recommending this to our friends.
Hello Yelp, the resident Whiskey River aficionado is back with a 3rd update. This one is primarily related to an instance that occurred tonight, and was such a disappointment, I had to yelp about it as soon as I arrived home....
So, basically, on the night that the Texas Rangers clinched their second AL pennant in a row (Go Rangers!), I was barred from entering because I was wearing a Rangers jersey. No, I do not have neck tattoos. No, I do not wear excessively baggy clothing. And, No, I do not wear a flat brim New Era hat cocked off to the side like some r*tard. At first I thought the guy was joking as is common for Yankee fans or Red Sox fans... Hell, maybe he was a Tigers fan. I thought, "for sure this is a joke." Until he reiterated that jerseys were not permitted in the establishment. Now, I'm well aware of the prevalence with which gangs adopt sports jerseys as their garment of choice, but come on! I'm a semi regular here, and I had been there just the night before. As a WR veteran, I'm pretty appalled. I had to run back home to change which cost me an hour of my night.
To me, there are easy ways to spot the trash as usually there are other cues in conjunction with the bearing of a sports jersey -- and they could be turned away easily, while bona-fide fans would be allowed to revel in their team's success without hindrance, but I guess that's discriminatory. Sad, really. Otherwise, it was a high 6/10 tonight. Fairly crowded, and the usual taper off of country music began right on cue at 12am. De-evolving perhaps?
Great place to go with friends  who are down with a country bar. Great amount of seats and nice dance floor in the middle of it all. Wait at the bar wasn't long at all, the tenders kept on it like donkey kong!
Me and my friends showed up at midnight Friday night...uhm I guess that would be Saturday morning, meh anyways. Like I was saying, showed up late and the only thing that seemed out of place with all the cowboy hats and satellite receiving belt buckles was the rap music. Now I'm a fan of all kinds of music but...in a country bar? Even I know that's some kind of sacrilege. Â It started as interspersed but kinda kept head to toe with the country songs til the end when country won again.
Nice place if you don't mind a little bit of random music.
I love coming to the Whiskey River. My boyfriend and I wanted to start getting to know some of the locals since we moved here a few months ago and we heard that they have a cornhole tournament every Thursday night. The bar opens at 3PM for an AWESOME happy hour ($1.50 for just about everything, including beer and cocktails) and the tournament starts at 6PM but the cornhole boards are laid out so anyone can practice on an open board until it starts. The tournament, from what I gathered, is a double elimination bracket thingie (I'm not so good with these sports things) and it's a $5 buy in with cash prizes for first, second, and third places. They play doubles and your partner is picked for you by random draw.
I haven't been here for the "club" time zone, but for the happy hour/bar times only. It's a really nice, relaxed atmosphere with country and oldies playing in the background. The owner also provides brisket and some munchies for those in the bar. Everyone we met was real friendly and talkative (in a good way). The bartender (I think was Amy during opening hours) was a real sweetheart. The owner, Darryl, and his wife I recognized from the picture on their website and he came right over and introduced himself to us and offered us brisket. He talked to us throughout the night and really made us feel welcome. He also played in the tournament but told us that if he ever did win, he always put his share of the money back in the pot and split it with the other winners, very cool.
The Whiskey River was built in 73 days or so and the owner was really proud of it, I guess he did most, if not all, of the work himself. The dance floor is the the largest I've seen in any club and is made from solid oak. The bathrooms (at least, the women's) is really clean and sanitary with about 5 stalls (instead of the usual 2 that I encounter at other clubs, lame). The crowd is a little older, not too many in the 21-25 range, but everyone seemed to get along really well. They have a doorman checking IDs and such later on in the evening but when we walked in at 5PM there was nobody and we headed over to the bar.
There are 3 very large bars around the perimeter of Whiskey River. Their selection is good, but not as varied as I would've liked. But prices really make up for it! From what I saw on the board behind the bar they have drink specials most every night and they are also listed on their website.
Had a great time here and will definitely be back on Thursdays playing cornhole. As we left we said by to the owner and some of the other regular patrons and they invited us to play cornhole almost every single other weekday.... I guess they just bring the boards out and play? Either way, sounds like fun! Â I don't know if I'll be back during clubbing hours, however, since I'm not really into that scene, but I'll have to check it out at least once I suppose! I definitely recommend checking this place out to have a relaxed good time. No douchebags here!
