Ok, maybe I came on an off night...but this place was super-noisy. It felt more like a sports bar than a wine-lounge...but maybe it's not supposed to be a wine lounge. With offerings like what they had...lots of seating, wine tasting charge, etc...I thought it would've been a little quieter. I'll need to come back to see if it's any different. I like the seating and the ambiance, though.
Review Source:I have been coming to this place for last 3 weeks. I think I am fallen in love with this place. Really a nice place to hang around with friends and have some cool drinks. The whole environment is friendly and the customer service is fine. The only problem I some time face is it often get over crowded.
Review Source:When I first came in I was a bit unsure. My boyfriend and I were the youngest people here by a lot. After a few seconds though I quickly changed my tune. There was fun live music, a very funny "bartender", and such a relaxed and joyous energy.
From my understanding there really is no set wine list. Whatever they have around you is what you can drink by the glass or bottle. Not sure what to get? The guy who helped us poured an amazing wine for us.
We also saw people have a pizza delivered to them (WHAT!) and others munching on sushi. It seems like a great place to just relax with some friends, munch on some to go food, and enjoy great wine.
We have some friends who love to escape to the Wine Cave. Â They have two kids, so on a night that they had a babysitter they invited us to join them on one of their rare nights out. Â This is a decidedly older crowd with a median age in the late 30s and 40s. Â That is not a bad thing, but realize people here are looking to enjoy some good wine and not having to yell to be heard by the person sitting next to them.
The owner Scott helps make this place. Â He stocks some great wines with some very agreeable price points. Â We had a syrah from Paso, and petite syrah and zin from Napa. Â All were some great wines and the pours were very generous. Â A couple hours relaxing with some great wines is not a bad way to enjoy being with friends and their night of freedom.
Pretty cool place. Â Great owner. Â Great bartender. Â Great wine and great choices for the wine flight.
Went there with a girlfriend upon a recommendation.
Very cozy. Â Comfortable. Â huge pours. Â Good knowledge of the wines they sell.
No food served. Â Just nibbles. Â Feel free to bring your own food though! Â Awesome. Â They also have menus available for places nearby that deliver. Â We brought our own snacks.
They do serve some complimentary nibbles. Â A few cheeses, crackers, pretzels.
Great place. Â Great people. Â Great atmosphere for a drink among friends. Â
Will come again:)
Went to The Wine Cave for the second time last night... 5:30 on a Friday. Â We were the only ones there for a while which astonished me because the prior time we went (much later on a Friday or Saturday... don't remember) it was packed. Â Read all the other five star reviews... they are right on the money. Â What can I add that's new? Â Let's see... Â although pricing has been mentioned, I gotta say the quality of the wine is amazing and the prices are astonishingly reasonable, both for the pours and if you want to take some bottles home (I ended up buying 8). Â Scott must go to great lengths to find these treasures. Â Seriously, seriously, seriously people if you want some off the beaten path bottles that'll tantalize your tastebuds for $20 or less, you need to go here. Â
I read the negative reviews too. Â The one pervasive thing I heard is that if you show up and it's busy it may be hard to get service. Â Ya know, I showed up the first time and it was packed. Â And, we actually did have to track Scott down a bit. Â You know why? Â Because he was out drinking and talking with the customers. Â Once we found him, he focused completely on our (rather large) party with varying tastes and got us set up with great wines. Â If you're looking for a maitre d' and a staff of servers, go somewhere else. Â If you're looking for a vibe that feels like you walked into a great party at a friend's house with interesting people, this is the spot. Â OK, so if the party is hopping maybe you need to go find the host because he's having fun at the party too. Â Big deal. Â Five stars ain't enuff.
The Wine Cave is not a wine store. The Wine Cave is more a wine bar. Â From the size of pours, this is NOT a tasting room - this is drinking. Â $12 for three large glasses of wine. Â People coming here to be a looky-loo at all the bottles need to go to Ralph's or Von's for their fetish of looking at labels. Someone who buys supermarket wines might be surprised to discover that the wines here taste better.
Scott is your neighborhood sommelier - he is not a wine shop with dusty shelves of unsold bottles. Scott (owner) tastes all the wine that he has on the shelf. Â He selects what he believes are the best value wines for his customers. Â His stock on hand tries to bridge across many palates. He has 6-10 labels during any month and there is about a 50% turnover of the labels each month. Â Scott can discuss wines with specfic recommendations by winery. Â He is a good resource.
Folks who drop in are friendly and interesting. Â The best time to go is Tues thru Thurs anytime between 2 pm and 6 pm. Â That is when the true wine experts are there and the educational process through discussion is on-going. Â The other times they are open, it is well patronized by folks looking for a good time with old and new friends - social time.
The Wine Cave is one of the many businesses who have rejected the extortion methods of Yelp to delete five star reviews and feature low star reviews from zero review/zero friend people. Keep on Rollin' Wine Cave.
It took me a little time to figure out what I really wanted to say about The Wine Cave.
It seems that every wine bar I visit becomes my favorite, I think this says more about the people that run wine bars/shops than it does about me. It's a very friendly industry.
If they ever wanted to remake the TV show Cheers and set it in a wine bar this would be the place they would model it after.
This is what a neighborhood wine bar should be. Everyone in here seems to know everyone else. This is not a bad thing. I came into this wine bar on a date and all the seats were taken, when one of the regulars saw this he offered me his seat (the one next to him was empty) so that we could sit down. To the kind stranger, I didn't get your name since you disappeared shortly after but thank you.
The owner Scott runs the place as if he doesn't need the money. I think his philosophy is to kill you with kindness. I think he figures if he treats you well, you will just keep coming back. More places should be run like this, develop relationships with the locals, treat the people that come on occasion as if they come in all the time and they will return. We bought a bottle to go that night and went back a couple of days later for more wine.
If you are there on a weekend just get the tasting. The wine selection is excellent and priced very reasonably. I can't say enough good things about this place.
This is a place for regulars. Â The owner has a great knowledge of wine and specializes in wines from the Paso region. Â He has other wines as well. Â His pours put every other wine shop to shame. Â A great place to enjoy friends and the food from the local restaurants. Â Anytime we are in town we like to stop in. Â Not a place for snobs.
Review Source:Good atmosphere - low key.  You sort of have to find the owner to order a glass of wine, because there isn't a menu except for a weekly  wine tasting board on the wall.  My glass of Malbec was only $5 and it wasn't a tasting serving either! Â
You can order food from the pizza place across the street and they'll deliver. Â Seemed like a few people did just that.
I would've marked it 4 stars, but I heard is that they didn't pay my friend for playing a 2-hr. acoustic guitar set - NO BUENO!!!
Went here Thursday night to support my friend JC. Great singing performance and great venue!
What I liked:
- friendly owner/bartender
- you can sample wine before buying
- ample street parking, lots nearby
- dark ambiance
- had one glass of malbec that got me very buzzed!
- paid $5, not sure if that was because I was new to the place?
- hungry? local restaurants will deliver!
I will be back :)
I had heard about this place from a couple of friends but never had opportunity to go until last night. My girlfriend is moving to Puerto Rico and had her going away get together there. I must say that this location is amazing. Scott the owner is a very humble and friendly man. We were able to get pizza from the place across the street which was super yummy. They also had a live acoustic guitarist playing. Overall its a very hospitable place. I will definitely be back more than a few times.
Review Source:They'll let you order in from that awesome restaurant across the street. Â Or that other awesome restaurant down the road. Â Or they will share some sushi with you while you enjoy your glass of wine.
I don't know you, Wine Cave staff dudes, but you were all right with me!
Cool staff makes a cool wine bar!
how do you know you should go to the wine cave?
-it's one of those nights... you want a glass of wine and you don't want to drink it at home alone. you head over to the wine cave and scott will chat you up. maybe a new friend or two too.
-you're glad that there are more and more wine places out there, but why should you pay so much for a splash? scott doesn't splash.
-you want a nice lil spot for you and the galpals to catch up on the latest. this is where you can actually hear each other and people respect your space. no meat markets in montrose. cheers to that!
-from flipflops, to sneakers, to stilettos, all soles are welcome. it's not uber fancy, it's what it is. fine wine for good souls. =)
WOW. Â This is my favorite place to relax, learn and enjoy wine. Â Scott is VERY knowledgeable and friendly. Â I live in Eagle Rock and drive up to Montrose to enjoy myself here. Â He has amazing wines at reasonable prices. Â I didn't know I could enjoy a bottle of wine that tasted like a $70 bottle for only $22!! Â I love that I can also bring in sandwiches and snacks, enjoy excellent wine and relax. Â I wish we had more places like this in Los Angeles. Â Keep up the excellent work Wine Cave!! You've got it right!!!
Review Source:I went here for the first time last night and had such a great time. Â First of all the owners are very nice and welcoming. Â Secondly, and most importantly a glass of wine doesn't cost an arm and a leg and Scott has several nice selections. Â 4 glasses for a friend and I was only $20.00. Â That is a deal. Â My friend Jan organized a Mardi Gras themed event which made it a lot of fun too. Â Lastly, it was Saturday night and they have a D.J. that was great. Â They started off with some '70's music and kept going with current dance tunes like OMG. Â I can't wait to go back again with a bunch of friends.
Review Source:Great place for tasting - owner Scott makes you feel welcome as he dishes on the great wine he's serving. Â Sit at the bar and chat with your sommelier or grab an arm chair and chill. Â We really enjoyed the atmosphere. Â The crowd was friendly and there was live music on the Saturday night we visited.
Review Source:The Wine Cave is "AWESOME".  The owners Scott and Dondra are always so nice and you will feel like you have known them for years.  It has become a great local hang out to just come and enjoy some wonderful wines at great prices.  You can buy wine by the glass or by the bottle and they even have some great import beers if you aren't a big wine drinker.  Stop by and say hi to them and you will be glad you did.  They have menus for some of the local restaurants that will deliver to the Wine Cave. They occasionally have live entertainment on Saturday nights which is always fun.  I am sure this little secret spot  is going to get real busy once Trader Joe's is finished next year.
Review Source:It's sad to say, but it looks like The Wine Cave has gone they way of the Montrose Bowling alley in that you need not enter without an invitation. Â We walked in last night (Friday) at about 9:40 PM. Â It was fairly crowded but we were told the place was closed. Not sure why. We both showered and used deodorant that evening. I assume it was another of their many private parties but there was no sign on the door stating so.
I realize they have to do what's necessary to stay in business but it's a shame. We used to like exploring the cave every once in a while.
It looks like our spelunking days are over.
Went here Saturday night - didn't get to drink any wine.
Walked in at 9pm, there were people at the bar and people sitting in chairs - but no service - no bartender - no wall menu.
Stood around - looked around - thought maybe someone would come out to greet us - was the owner/server in the bathroom?
No one came around - didn't feel welcome so we left. I guess the reviews below are correct - it's a local or neighborhood hang out - so since I'm not a local - I didn't know Scott or know how to get a glass of wine there.
As an avid wine drinker with a mission to visit every wine bar in Southern California - this one disappointed. I couldn't get served!
Maybe I'll comeback when they've expanded to serve everyone. Next time I'm in the hood I'll go to Rosso or somewhere else.
This is a great locals hangout and Scott is a great guy that's very passionate about wines. I like talking (learning) about wines that he carries and I like that he's not hung up on high priced Napa wines and loves to highlight small local SoCal Central Coast vineyards. Check in to see when he might be offering a wine tasting; the local vineyards will visit and for a very low price let you sample their goodness...worth it!
Scott is going to start doing good cheese and meat pairings, but I'm not sure exactly when; hopefully soon! This is a great place to come hang out, watch the games, mingle with friends, or just learn about good wines. Local business that needs your support...come on people!
This is the best little neighborhood place to go. I feel uncomfortable going into a bar by myself but not here. Scott and Donda make you feel like family. Scott knows his stuff about wine. Â He always finds me something I like and has no trouble telling you where it came from or how it differs from other wines. This is a great place to have an intimate place for a small party or just a place to go relax after work. They have a few snacks and you can order in from any one of the local restaurants.
The walls have changing art works from local people. They have wines from different areas (Italian, Spanish, etc) displayed also. Sometimes on a Saturday they will have live music.
This is a great place and very unpretentious....
When my friend mentioned The Wine Cave, I knew I had to see this place for myself. However it was far from what I imagined it to be. I imagine this huge building with walls and walls of wine bottles and people all over the place having a good ol' time. In reality, that place was very small, dark, and very simple. Unlike other wine places, there were only a few wine bottles on display and a small simple bar with only one "bartender". Only a few chairs and sofas were available for patrons.
Aside from the very simple decor and layout, The Wine Cave is the neighborhood bar where everybody knows each other. Though the selection of wine is numbered, the owner does his best to offer what you're looking for. Very knowledgeable and attentive, he'd find the wine that will suit your taste. I don't really drink but was willing to try a dessert wine. The owner offered me two whites to try and whichever I liked, he would pour a full glass.
The place is very comfy and you can stay as long as you wish. Nobody would hound you to leave. Overall it's a nice small place to unwind and enjoy each other's company.
The Wine Cave is not a huge wine store. The selection is based whatever the owner orders that week. He was very friendly and makes you feel at home. Â Two full glasses of wine will run you $10.
I don't even drink wine (yet) and I have fun going in with friends. Â Scott is on the ball with his clients and once he knows your likes he remembers them. Â You barely get in the door and he has a glass of something you'll like poured for you. Â Or in my case, a bottle of water opened. Â =)
Review Source:Small, intimate, and unpretentious.
Where simplistic minimalist design meets a variety of delectable wines for your craving palate.
Pretzels and cheeses are offered in unlimited supply.
The owners are great sommeliers and very friendly. They have a private room as well for parties.
A bit pricey, but worth going to when you want to sample some wine and champagne.
The owner is great- totally engaging and knowledgeable. We had a great time chatting with him and learned a bit about the wine we ordered. Â Nice to have a wine bar in Montrose, and it feels local!
BUT, I need to give this place three stars as the atmosphere resembles an bachelor pad and the seating is minimal. I mean, there are just a couple of tables and you feel like you are in a warehouse, but not in a cool minimalist sort of way but in a thrown together sort of way. Owners need to invest in the decor and update it-- red walls are out. Â They should think about creating cool spaces for conversation, add more chairs and play background music.
I really like this place. Â I've been to quite a few wine bars around town and this place is reasonable in price and they have some great wines. Â The owner Scott is really nice and personable. Â The last time I was there, we did a tasting of the wines he was pouring that night. Â We bought 3 bottles of wine, and we only paid for the bottles of wine and not the tasting. Â And the tastings weren't those tiny little pours! Â They don't serve food here, but the last 2 times I was there they had complimentary pizza and other nibbles which I thought was cool. Â Don't know if that's a regular thing. Â The only complaint I have is that this place could use more seating, but if you snag one, it's easy to stay awhile and hang.
Review Source:I love wine. But what I hate about going to wine bars is the snooty, pretentious, arrogant, stuffy and condescending atmosphere that so many wine bars seem to have. Thankfully, Â The Wine Cave is nothing like any wine bar you are used to going to. Yes, the decor is spartan and the seating is limited (because of zoning issues as I understand). But what this place lacks in decoration it more than makes up for in hospitality.
I had never met Scott or Donda in my life. However, they treated us like we have been friends for years. Not by wearing a fake smile and carrying on some BS conversation, but actually sitting down and talking to us. Their friendliness must be contagious because pretty much everyone we met that night was the same way.
The wife and I now have a new favorite place. Did I fail to mention that the wine is pretty good as well?
My wife and I wandered in to check this place out and quickly fell in love with the place. Â The owners, Scott and Donda, immediately made us feel like old friends, and next thing we knew we'd been there talking and drinking wine for a couple of hours. Â Scott really knows his wines, and we left with a couple of excellent...and very well priced bottles! Â We'll be back very soon.
Review Source:Scott and Donda greeted me with a warm smile and a glass of vino. He presented me with a clean glass of a Napa Merlot (Sorry Miles) that I enjoyed thoroughly. It had just the right amount of body and smoothness that tickled my palette.
The wine bar (closed Monday) itself is decorated with beautiful displays from a local artist. Views, oceans, nature, and seductive art hung from the walls of this elegant bar.
I decided to roam around the grounds, with my glass of course, and experience the art work myself. As I did this, I noticed Gourmet Toffee which I had the pleasure of tasting a few months back. The Wine Cave sells lovely packages of this buttery, smooth, and divine wondrous toffee. It is my favorite and I have yet to see it sold anywhere else. Once I told Scott that I had tried the toffee and loved it, he went to the kitchen, grabbed a box and allowed me to devour as much as I wanted without any hesitations. What a treat!
Different bottles of wine hang on shelves along with beautifully crafted gift displays made by Donda. Stools line up the bar, adjoined by a flat screen tv that featured basketball, at least that's what it was tonight. Pretzels rest at the bar if you'd like to get a salty fixture on your tounge along with a glass of vino of your choice.
This bar is a little different than others in the area. Scott and Donda have wine tasting every single night. That way, you can pick what YOU (and your palette) enjoy and experience a whole other world of vino. They don't serve food but Scott is aiming to serve cheese soon for us wine aficionados. He mentioned that patrons may purchase food from the local restaurants and eat at the bar. Â
Scott is a kind man who seems to genuinely enjoy the company of newcomers, such as myself. We engaged in many topics: wine, politics, economics, business, and chocolate to name a few, accompanied with a glass of red, naturally.
Armed with a delicious glass of wine and good conversation, makes this a quintessential wine bar in my hood. Scott was nice enough to pour me another glass while we continued our conversation. I will definitely be back to engage my mind and palette. He even gave me a warm hug and wished me a good evening. I'm a sucker for hospitality.
Thank you Scott and Donda.
Cheers.
