My boyfriend and I stopped in here last night to pick up a bottle of wine to take to dinner. I believe the man helping us was named John, and he was wonderful. He was very nice and knew exactly what we were looking for after asking us a few simple questions. Even though this place is a little boutique place with mostly nice high end wines, don't be afraid to ask for a wine at a lower price point because they will definitely recommend something within your budget that suits your taste. The gentleman that came in before us asked for a good bottle around $20 and John was happy to show him some of his options. We ended up buying a Napa Chardonnay for $38 and absolutely loved it. We will definitely need to stop by again and do a tasting.
Review Source:I really enjoyed the hour or so we spent with John at Wines from the Heart. He shared his knowledge of Monterey wines and local eateries. Most of all, we were able to taste some of the better wines from the area.
As most know, an open bottle of wine will loose its character in a short period of time. This tasting room/shop stores miniature sample bottles of the tasting wine in a climate controlled area so what you try is a fresh unoxidized example. (interesting the wine shop across the street uses a high tech machine that dispenses their high end samples from an apparatus that fills opened bottles with an inert gas)
Wine from the Heart is great place to sample and purchase some local wines. Some restaurants in the area will waive corkage fees on wine purchased here.
This place has a nice tasting bar and a few cute tables. Â The location is right across from the Portola Hotel and is super convenient to the wharf.
They charge $15 for four one ounce pours, which I think is pretty expensive for some wines that I may not be sure about. Â However, they had a coupon on YELP - BOGO - check into this place on Yelp and grab your coupon! Â
The gentleman helping us was super friendly and accommodating, but not terribly knowledgeable about what he was pouring. Â
I may go back if I stumble across another coupon or if I have guests in town, but not likely to just go back on my own or with other locals.
Total bummer! Â After seeing a huge sign advertising "Wine Tasting," my husband and I stopped into this place for wine tasting and the person behind the counter was completely unprepared to serve us. Â We first asked if they had a list of wines or flights that we could taste. Â The bartender said that he was in the process of refilling the wines and didn't have a list. Â He went back to his "refilling" so I inquired about how they did tastings and what else we might be able to drink. Â He offered us a splash of the ONE wine that he had available. Â It was good, but overall I got a really bad vibe that he just didn't want to serve us. Â The place looks super cute and the retail selection was great-- we just left hugely disappointed that they weren't really doing wine tastings or even able to offer wines by the glass during our visit.

S.O. and I decided to stop by here before our dinner... just to check out what they have and it was almost closing time on a Sunday so we didn't stay long.
I asked the owner if he had any Cakebread Pinot opened ... he said no but he did let us taste two Pinots that was at the opposite end of what the Cakebread taste like. Granted I didn't like any of the two wines (S.O. liked the sweeter Pinot...) but he was friendly and gave me suggestions in terms of trying out other vineyards.
They have a variety of wine selection so if you're staying at the Portola hotel... stop by here if you want to bring a bottle for dinner.
Decent pricing as well... and the owner was friendly.
Stopped in here one day while walking around town. I decided to walk in and just see what the place was like. The man behind the counter was very informative about the wines and locales making up the Monterey County wine region. Turns out that the two wines I tasted were more southern Monterey County, but that's okay. I enjoyed the wines I tasted and ended up buying a bottle of each. While I was there a few other people came in and were helped by him. He pointed one lady to some whites she was looking for as a gift for a friend of hers. Another person was looking for some wines she was used to seeing on each trip she made there, but didn't leave disappointed since she found some others she wanted. All in all, this wine shop provided a nice break in the day.
Review Source:This was a strange place to buy wine. It's more of a retail store rather than a tasting place, but you can taste wines and pay by the taste. The wines we had were okay, not great.
What made the whole visit awkward was that we were lied to by the geography-challenged young man who worked there. We specifically asked for a wine from the Monterey region. He suggested something that was from 40 miles away--Monterey County is very large, so okay. Later, when I saw the bottle, I noted that it was from Napa (which is 150+ miles away). I also overheard him tell a couple that the Contra Costa wine that he was pouring come from a region northwest of SF. Hmmm.
This place has just about any wine you're looking for and if they don't have it, they'll get it! Â You're sure to get friendly service as well as wine recommendations from the owners (who are just awesome). Â
When we're in the area, we seriously travel out of our way just to buy our wine here. Â I mean, sure, you can go pick up any old bottle of wine from a huge retailer, but wouldn't you rather have personal service from people who care?
