    This review is for the pies. My husband and I were driving around and when I spotted the sign for the "Home of the Best Lilikoi Chiffon Pie" this stop was a must. Can you same yummy? I am in love with their Lilikoi Chiffon Pie- very light and airy, but great flavor in the filling and the crust must be homemade too. We tried slices of the lilikoi chiffon, the chantilly and the macadamia nut cream pie. All slices were winners. So were the shortbread cookies. Since we didn't know when our next visit back to Kauai was going to be, we drove all the way back the day we were going home and purchased a frozen pie to take with us. I love how local vendors find a way to  pack food so we can bring food home to the outer islands. Thank you Wong's! We'll be back for your pies one day!

    Today was the mandatory visit to the Kauai Kookie Factory in Hanapepe and decided to try Wong's restaurant across the street - we had always want to try their pie: lilikoi (passion fruit) chiffon pie, so decided to have lunch too.

    This is basically a plate lunch place with one to three choices accompanied by rice or Chow Mein - prices vary depending on number and type of choices. We however opted for the Saimin noodle soup. My wife ordered the regular and I had the pork. It took a while to arrive but was well worth the wait. The noodles were cooked to perfection - not too soft. The servings were large as my wife only finished half of her bowl. I of course finished mine and almost licked the bottom of the bowl.

    The Saimin was served with a small container of hot mustard. Typically Chinese hot mustards go a long way with a small dab. But this was a bit watered down and pourable. So when added to the Saimin gave just the right amount of heat and mustard flavor.

    I also sampled the Wong's Hot Bitch Sauce -a homemade vinegar hot sauce that has quit a kick. Each table has a ketchup bottom filled with the sauce and you can purchase bottles that are more conventionally packaged. I examined  one of the for purchase bottles to see the ingredients, and none were listed - probably not Kosher, but this is Wong's.

    They had Chinese duck that day and we decided to take an order home. The nice lady behind the counter offered us a tasting to see if we really wanted to invest $12 in a small order. My wife thought the duck had too much Chinese 5 Spice, so that killed the deal.

    We did buy a frozen lilikoi (passion fruit) chiffon pie and will sample that after dinner tonight.

    In any case, next year when we visit the Kauai Kookie Factory we will return to Wong's for a nice lunch.

    Love to support a family business but unless the food dramatically improves I don't think I'll be going back :(. Definatly authentic but a little bland for our mainland tongues.

    Ok I gave 3 not for the food but the service, people are nice and helpful

    The food...oh the food SALT SALT SALT oh and MORE SALT!. the oyster chicken was so salty that it was almost not edible and I LOVE SALT...the "pork chops" as they call them were good I would get that again the S&S pork was ok peppers were fresh and it was eatable. The chowmein was so salty we could not finish it. The mac nut pie was simply a prebake crust with instant vanilla pudding and some nuts on top I would probably skip for $4

    I ate a wide range of the food here, and overall, it was really good.  The eggplant was better than I expected it to be, really perhaps the best rendition of this I've had in a Chinese restaurant.  The broccoli beef and the orange chicken seemed to hint of sweetgrass in the preparation.  The pork fried wontons were very good when dipped into the sauce that goes with it.
    I was a bit surprised that my egg foo yung didn't have any gravy on it, but it was still tasty.  The big disappointment was the duck, they have it there hanging under heat lamps, presumably just for show.  The half duck I ordered came out immediately, piping cold.  The skin was crispy, and that is good, but this was not one of the ones that had been heated recently.  The meat was firm, like one would expect from cold meat.  It had a nice flavor, but not the quite as tasty as one would expect from an authentic Chinese restaurant.  I have had much better.
    Also, the Bitch sauce at the table was anticlimactic.  I kept trying to use more and more of it, hoping for some sort of intense flavor that might live up to such a bold name.  I guess it was named in the sense that it gets punked by other sauces.
    The lilikoi cake was tasty, light, and delicious, but again, there is better on the island.  I had some of the chocolate cake too, but it's really nothing to write about.

    There is one thing that bothers me, and I'm not going to let this influence the star rating, because maybe they just found their niche, and they have enough business as it is.  Perhaps they are not interested in certain kinds of finicky customers.  I don't enjoy when a restaurant is lacking in the ability to consider the quality of their customer's experience.  When they don't, I feel it usually means the people in charge don't dine out themselves enough to know what the general public expects of them.  For instance, walking in, I can look through the windows and see sparsely used tables at the extremity of the dining room swaddled in a thick blanked of dust, with trash bits sprinkled here and there.  The atmosphere in their banquet room is negligible, and their dining room as well.  

    It is like they almost want to be a restaurant, they serve beer, they have places to eat, their people are very friendly, but their comfort zone is a take out style.  You get your food, then wait in line to eat it until you can get your plastic fork and paper napkin from the cashier.  Don't forget to bus your table on the way out.

    This place has all the tools to be a great restaurant, but not the will or the know how to make it happen.  They have the space; I've seen some great successful restaurants that have a booming take out on one side and a busy no joke restaurant on the other.  They even have enough doors at the entrance to do so.  Again, maybe they just don't want the volume, they are comfortable with what they have going.  I wish they would take the next step, I think I would dine with them more often, and I think they would get a lot more people who want more than take out.

    Wong's is a cute neighborhood Chinese restaurant with a few different sections.

    The main large room has a hot item counter with Chinese barbecue items : roast pork, bbq pork aka char siu, and roast duck, refrigerators with drinks.  Another area, mainly next to the cashiers countertop, there were pastries for 1-2$ such as sesame balls, steamed pork buns and little puff pastries.  

    I saw their menu included won ton noodle soup (?), saimin (5.99), ox tail soup (12.99)
    and other things I can't remember.

    At the hot counter, I ordered broccoli beef, oyster chicken (roast chicken in oyster sauce) and half a roast duck to share.  A two item combo including the steamed rice was approximately $8.00.

    Everything was fine.  The broccoli beef tasted good.  I liked the duck, but I had a few salty pieces that had more than their fair share of the roast duck seasoning.

    I browsed their selection of baked goods in a refrigerator at one end of the room. I decided to follow the crowd and tried their lilikoi (passionfruit) chiffon pie.  It is their signature item and is tasty if you like sweet + tart foods.  It's a gelatin/egg based chiffon that has lilikoi in it, making it sweet and tart invoking true passionfruit flavor.  

    Other things I saw were cream puffs, vanilla custard filled bars, guava cake, chocolate cream pie and browned mochi.

    The food was good for Kauai, authentic, just not somewhere I would go expecting table service and silverware.  They have a large banquet room as large as the active food to go section, but it didn't seem to be in use.

    This place is heaven. I wished I lived across the road in that small housing development then I could eat lunch and take out food. Yum.

    I don't understand the fondness for Lilikoi Chiffon Pie here, it was way too sweet, crust seemed store-bought and undercooked, and the filling didn't have much passion fruit flavor at all. It just didn't work for us.

    On the other hand, the chopped pork belly (from the deli counter) and Portuguese sweet dinner rolls were awesome. And the cashier (70-ish) exemplified Kauai friendliness.

    Will definitely return, but not for the pie.

    Lilikoi Chiffon Pie and homemade Butter Mochi!
    Lilikoi Chiffon Pie from Wong's (it's also a bakery) is a MUST for us every trip. Whole pie, fresh or frozen $14.00. Wong's is famous for the pie, we got a frozen one for dessert when we would have dinner with friends on Tuesday, Sept 13th. As I was paying for the pie, I noticed Jackie Wong's Homemade Butter Mochi, why not?!? OMG, this stuff is good! 5 stars

    DO NOT have your parties or events catered by this restaurant.  COMPLETE RIP OFF!  They charged us over $4500 for 100 people and did not even serve drinks - NOT EVEN WATER.  The food was mediocre at best.  Mongolian beef tasted like a pound of sugar was added.  Everything was way too sweet.  Also, if you choose to cater and don't finish all of the food you ordered, they won't let you take it home or pack any to-go.  You paid for food you don't finish - too bad.  

    It is pathetic and pitiful that they feel the need to take advantage of our family during a sorrowful event.  My brother in law owns a restaurant and knows your pricing is WAY OVER what it should have been.  Shame on you Wong's chinese restaurant for overcharging and taking advantage of out of towners.

    This place is real Chinese food. Order from the lunch counter. Best rice I have ever had.  Very inexpensive for lunch or dinner. Remember you cannot go wrong at Wong's!

    "Eat at Wong's, you cant' go wrong" - seriously, that's what they have on their menu.

    This restaurant really doesnt look like much from the outside, as a matter of fact it really didnt look that appetizing at all.  But once you're inside, you can see that they have real authentic Chinese food: clue #1 the roast ducks hanging in the "meat rack", clue #2: the chinese lady chopping the roast duck and roast pork with the meat cleaver; clue #3: it smells really good.

    The restaurant serves a really eclectic mix of foods from Cheeseburgers to Oxtail Soup, from Shrimp Fu Yung to Lilikoi Chiffon Pie.

    We had the Oxtail Soup and it was GOOD!  The oxtail was cooked to the point where the meat falls off the bone, the soup had chinese bok choy, chinese mushrooms, and was really tasty.  We also had the Roast Pork Saimin and that was also very tasty.  We didnt have enough room in our stomachs for the Char-Siu but the pieces hanging on the meat rack looked really delicious.

    One thing to try is the Wong's Bitch Hot Sauce (I should have taken a picture of the bottle as I dont recall the exact name of it).  Good and spicy if you like vinegar based sauces.

    Prices are about $8 for the plates.

    The place is crawling with locals and the Lilikoi Chiffon Pie and Pumpkin pies were flying off the shelf for take out.

    Real Chinese food! This place is a super Mom & Pop operation. Don't expect Panda Express here. I really like the chow mein here, a lot more flavorful than at other places. They also have Japanese food. They also have lilikoi chiffon pie and manapua. The pork manapuas have little piggies on them!

    Authentic & they give you a TON of food.
