Pros:
- Clean, food was good and tasted fresh, full bar, waiter was attentive and cute.
Cons:
- $20 for hookah that wasn't great, harsh and hard to pull. I'm not an expert but my friend that I was with is, and she agreed
- Cluster of dudebros surrounding the entrance leering at girls going in
Other:
- This place has an identity crisis. When I went, the NBA draft was on all the tvs and they were playing the Jackson 5 over the sound system for what seemed like the whole time we were there..add hookah and it's just a really confusing combination
Overall Austin Street severely lacks on options for night life so it's a decent addition to the area
Great hooka bar with all the flavors! This place DEFINITELY knows how to do a hooka with the option to smoke it out of real fruit and use milk/wine instead of water. Can't go to Russians for hooka need to go to REAL Middle Easterners. I lived in the middle east for 5 years, I know the real deal. The food here is also good! I forgot my phone charger and the staff let me use one of theirs, class act!
Review Source:Been here four times now. Â I never had the food since we always come here after the kitchen closes, so this rating is not based on the food.
Most recently, we came here at 11:00 PM on Sunday, Cinco de Mayo, and it was half packed. Â The host approached us immediately when he saw us enter. Â Throughout the night, the waitress came by to check on us at good intervals (every 15-20 minutes), which I liked.
The hookah is good and it's not too pricey at $18 (although the waitress did try to persuade us to get three hookahs for a table of 8, and not everyone was partaking. Â We got one, and it was enough for 5 tokers). Â My drink of choice here is a Jack neat, because they are generous in they portions.
The only bad thing was: One TV was out of order so one side of the table had to turn their heads to watch TV. Â
Service very good, drinks good size, hookah good.
I like this place, and I'll be back.
Went there tonight wanting a good hookah after a long and the service was slow amd forgetful. And by far the worst hookah I have ever had. I had told them after ten minutes that the hookah had no flavor and made me cough. Their response was I don't know how to smoke hookah and i knew nothing about knowing it is traditional for where im from. in a rude manor the person I spoke to told me that there's nothing he can do and to leave. Â Unacceptable behavior, I do not suggest this place to anyone it is a waste of money and time.
Review Source:Great space. Roomy. Shame about the bartender that took $15 that I had sitiing on bar in front of us while we had our beers. We both have accents so I guess she took us for visitors NOT. We were only half way through our beers did not have coats on. Very obvious that the money was not her tip. I asked her for my money back. She played dumb and I said the money you took and put in your tip bucket! Then she said well how much I maintained it was $15. She was flustered at being sprung and gave me back $18. Stupid she is on all counts. I put a quarter under my empty beer bottle before I left to express my appreciation for the excellent service. I always tip over 20 % to bartender's. When did it become standard in NYC to not leave your cash on the bar by your beer? A tip is what you give when you leave or what you give if there is a shift change. It is NOT what you take randomly when you think your patrons are drunk visitors! Never again. This is why the place was half empty on a Friday night.
Review Source:Came here randomly after watching a movie nearby, since I was craving a drink. Their hookah is really good! Better quality hookah than other places nearby, and it is not as pricy as other places! For a strong lasting hookah I highly recommend the Mint one! Def. my choice every time I come here! The bartenders and staff is friendly. I like coming here watching games while having a drink and some hookah! Honestly the best place to go to on Austin Street!
Review Source:Let's see... I tried this place based on Yelp reviews... I'm thinking Nice Hookah place only a short distance from my apartment... ahh, to be so Naive... so let's start from the beginning, this place has a total identity crisis... it's the horrible offspring of a bad sports bar and a decent Hookah place... The Knicks game was blasting from every TV... now yes, it's a sport night, but it's not the playoffs, so do we need to have the game blasting so high?
Service: Slow, forgot about a beer order, and we arrived around 10ish... We place an order for a small appetizer and are ready to place another order and are told... Oh, Kitchen is closed... wouldn't that be a nice piece of info to share BEFORE we order?
So back to Game, there was a "DJ" and using the term DJ might be offensive to all High School wanna-be DJs... since they would be David Guetta compared to this guy, a mixture of early 2000s with a dash of Biggie/Rihanna... again at a level which was waay too high for a Hookah Bar... Â
Ok, Â the usual Hookah Bar recipe for success is simple... Decent Hookah (which is why I gave them a star), music (not too soft nor loud, enough so you can maintain a conversation , you don't even need a DJ... in this case, the DJ was soo rude, that even when we asked, you you lower it a bit, there was no response... Trust me, DJing on a weekday on Austin St, let's just say it's not that hard...
So in conclusion, decent hookah, slow service and a horrible DJ...
I thought I wrote a review a few months ago -- went back here last night because Dirty Pierre's had absolutely no vegetarian entrees -- i had the vegetarian platter again (for $10) and it was even better than the last time -- the falafel came with two sauces -- in addition to hummus, babagenoush, tabulleh, salad and pita - and pickled peppers -- Â and $8 for a Jack Daniels on the rocks -- couldn't complain.
Really excellent Mediterranean food -- not too much selection in drinks -- I've stopped doing hookah because it is supposed to be unhealthy -- but the adventurous could try it - supposed to be good. Â Excellent choice if you want falafel on Friday and saturday and the Israeli places are closed
Server was extremely accommodating. Menu has the classic Mediterranean items like Schwarma and standard flare. Music is good just a little loud but nice spot that serves middle eastern cuisine at decent prices and they have hookah. Pleasant smelling and the folks who are into that seem to really enjoy it.
Review Source:Finally! What this neighborhood needed! No longer do I or would I need to venture to overly crowded inconvenient Steinway for some AMAZING hookah! And with a full bar AND Â food - yes yes and yes please. Love this spot. Staff is super friendly and the place is beautiful and in the heart of Austin street just 2 blocks from the major subway lines I couldn't ask for more! Great night or relaxing day time spot! A must go to.
Review Source:Despite my general dislike for this place, I found myself back here to smoke some hookah with a couple of friends since the other option in the neighborhood was packed with 18 year olds. Couple of things stood out:
- The guy providing the service to our table was a really nice dude. I mean he was nice to a point where I felt bad about giving this place 2 stars in my first review.
- The DJ was still playing stuff that I think is unsuitable for a hookah lounge but after we made some requests, and I specifically requested that he play a certain genre at a certain BPM, he played some stuff that was pretty decent. He even turned it down to a more tolerable level where our ears weren't hurting. Â About half an hour later, he reverted back to type but I appreciated the effort
The hookah is good and so is the service. But are they a restaurant or are they a lounge? Are they trying to attract kids or slightly more mature clientele? I think with a little more direction, 718 can be a much better place. You can't please everyone.
The service is by far the best hookah service I have ever experienced. Our waiter was extremely attentive, personable, and accommodating qualities that I find in an excellent server.
The decor was an intimate setting. The music was top 40 and the ventilation was great. Looking back at my encounter it was a joyous one. My date and I had an awesome time and the vibe was passionately heated.
As far as the drinks and the hookah. I can't say too much about the drink because I had a stella but the prices were economically friendly. If you looking to save money go on  a Wednesday. Now, I will refer to the old cliche "Save the best for last". The best part of the hookah lounge was the hookah. The tobacco burned long, taste was great, smoke was thick and it took a LOoooonnnngggg time to get harsh. The tobacco that was used was amazing and flavorful. To sum up my My overall experience was a paramount.
Mister took me to check out this new eatery on Austin Street a few Saturdays ago. Â I'd been fiending for a good glass of Chardonnay and tried very hard to like the one they served me but that was not to be- it was lackluster, at best. Â
Luckily, the owner walked by, saw the look of distaste on my face and promptly brought me a glass of yummy Sangria- now THAT worked!
Dinner was pretty good - we shared the Hummus appetizer and I LOVED their Sujuk entree (lamb sausage) while Mister tore into his Chicken Shish Kebab accompanied by an icy cold Corona.
We'll be back and the next time, I'll tell the owner about the tasteless pita we were served with our Hummus...blarf. Â It didn't do the Hummus any justice.
