The club's management is very shady.  They advertise a low cost or free admission but there's always a cover charge.  Staff is unfriendly, they act like their doing you a favor by serving you although the prices are manhattan high. I wouldn't mind if the service and quality if the drinks were on par with venues in the city but trust me when I say they're not.  Drinks are served in 6oz plastic cups filled with ice and not mixology quality but they cost $8-10 dollars.  Rip-off.  If you pay attention to the news, I don't have to tell you that a bouncer there beat up a patron beyond recognition and put him in the hospital brain dead.  Bottom line, price gouging, lousy service, unsafe environment and management that only cares about hustling you out of your cash.

Overall this is a pretty nice and fun place but there are many drawbacks that bring down it's flavor.
Most of it's location is pretty much advertised all over the surrounding area since it's a majority West Indian community. Flyers are everywhere and there's many different promoting groups that throw events here. The events, for the most part, are pretty good and get the crowd involved. But that is if the performer even shows up, performers are known to not show up at this venue or show up in the last hour or two that the club is open.
On these special event nights that performers show up, you will want to find a random promoter who's selling early tickets. The price at the door will sky rocket to double the original. To find one of these promoters, you will have to do your own research and check out their facebook page to see who posts on the wall that they have the tickets. And just because you have a ticket doesn't mean you get to skip the long line, which can sometimes be half a block long. Even on regular nights, if you come too late, you will have to wait on a ling of about 30+ people. If you come early, it's pretty much dead inside and the DJs are practicing their mixes.
The price promotions you see on their websites and flyers don't work well at their front door ticket booth. You are given the regular price and if you inform them about seeing something different on their website they tell you they can't do anything about it. Upon entry you do a walk-through scan and then get pat-down.
For hookah, on a big event night which they hire a nearby venue called Hookah Paradise, you pay a large amount for a tiny hookah ranging from $30-50 and $50-$60 for a large hookah. On top of that, you also pay per coal change, which can cost about $10-15. To then get your coals changed, you have to bring the whole hookah back to them, they will not come out to service you.
Moka is located down a dark back street around old factories and shipping/storage buildings. It was a shipping/storage building before they converted it into a club called De River, they renovated it over the years and changed the name to Moka. You have to be careful about many things when coming to this club, it's a bit tedious and slightly dangerous sometimes. Inside the club, at least once per night there is a big fight where even if you are not involved someone might take a random swing at you and make you involved. The bouncers will grab all who are involved and drag them outside, once they kicked out the club doesn't monitor or care what happens or if the fighting continues. Outside the club, in the range of five blocks there have been many crimes in the recent years, from robbery to car damage. I've seen people have their car windows broken, radios stolen, paint getting scratched, mirrors broken off. I've heard of people getting robbed at knife-point while walking to their cars or just attacked by someone who they got into an interaction inside the club or sometimes just even attacked randomly. There are marked and unmarked police officers circling the building but they hardly even get to prevent an incident from happening, by the time you get to talk to one of them it's just to report the crime. Most of the time they just tell you to let it be and go home, other times they will pretend to write something down and you won't get a followup. Girls, I recommend you don't come here alone and try to bring at least two guys in your group. Guys here are super creepers, the majority of female friends I've came here with always have random guys staring at them or trying to sneak in a grind of them when they don't notice or even grope them. It's very uncomfortable for girls here, they are the prey of these night fiends. Keep track of your friends, guys here have no problem taking a random drunk girl home.
Every time I've come here, the drink prices seem to climb, they are pretty much around or over city prices right now. The cups are a bit on the smaller side and they are filled to the top with ice. The bottles are pretty expensive and can be up to $200 each. If you want a nice VIP area, you have to contact the club and book it in advance or they will be reserved. Then, you will be offered one of their other "VIP areas" which can be anything from a random small round high table without seats or a small rectangular low table with seating around it.
The music is mostly soca, there's a few other genres mixed in like reggae, hip-hop and a little reggaeton. If you come on a Friday, which is mostly the Latin night, you will hear mostly reggaeton with a mix of the other genres. No house, 40's, trance, dubstep or any of the other similar musics here.
It's really nice here if you come in a large group and get one of the bigger normal VIP areas, which you will have to purchase 2-4 bottles to obtain for the night. Keep your people in the VIP area or on the dancefloor right in front of it to have a drama-free night.
