I don't drink, but I took my boyfriend, a huge beer fanatic, here thanks to Joseluis' great SoBe list. Â Let's start with the hours--Abraxas is open until 5am on most days, and until 3 on Sundays and Monday's. Â Pretty sweet hours. Â
As for the ambiance, it's a very chill, laid back, come-as-you-are, neighborhood kind of place. Â There's a large bar in the vented and sofas and chairs set up in a few nice lounge areas. Â The chill tone is set by the music, which had a nice chill Indies sound and by the lighting, Â which is where my problem came in. Â It was dark enough that my boyfriend thought they weren't even open, but when you walk in, Â it's so dark, Â extremely dark that your eyes hurt and you can barely see he menu. Â As for the chalkboard menu, forget about it! Â It 's impossible to see well enough to read even half of it.
Aside from the darkness and the fact that all of the regulars seem to smoke, which quickly started to make me feel sick and kill my eyes, I thought this place was a real find. Â Chillin' out at Abraxas is like having drinks at a close friend's.house. Â Everyone feels welcome and right at home. Â The bartender was cool, Â even towards me, the non drinker. Â She checked on me a few times and never made me feel unwelcome. Â She seemed to know everyone else and chatted it up with them.
The star here is the menu, or should I say menus. Â There's a specialty beer menu and an international beer menu, both of which are huge. Â Prices are like little else in the vicinity, very reasonable. Â The menus tell you origin and alcohol content of all beers and prices range from $6 to $40plus, with six bucks being the average price. Overall, this place is a gem. Â Abraxas is a much-needed reprieve from the pomp and ostentation of the typical SoBe scene. Â I was even impressed by the beer selection, Â and Id never drink beer, even if I did drink. Thanks, Helpers, Â for another great find!
I can't believe I haven't reviewed Abraxas, my favorite spot on the beach!.
My local watering hole with an amazing selection of craft beers, and a decent line up of wines and sake as well,10 taps of always solid choices such as Bells, Evil Twin, Cigar City, Avery, Ballast Point, Green Flash, Bear Republic, Stone, etc etc. Prices are reasonable, they have daily specials according to the different days, (which also controls the type of music they play!) Monday's "In the Biz", Trivia Tuesdays (ahem!) where you can actually win bar money sometimes in excess of $60! (I also hear the Host is a pretty damn cool guy), ladies night, and the occasional special event such as tap take overs or brewery features.
The owner is a great guy devoted to beer, music and to his customers. Ambiance is mellow, beer loving crowd, 'un-southbeachy', The have smoke-eaters installed so even though you can smoke (meh!) you can actually leave the place w/o smelling like an ashtray.
If you're any of these you must visit Abraxas
a) Beer Nerd
b) Beer Geek
c) Lover of Beer
d) Suds Devotee
e) Looking for something chill off the beaten path
f) Wanna hang out around mellow cool people and listen to some great tunes
See you there.
Abraxas inevitably grows on you. The first time I set foot here, I arrived with a group of friends, and after not being able to recognize any of the handles on the tap, I was thunderstruck. I am not a novice beer drinker, and I have matured from my college years when anything that gets me drunk is acceptable. I know beer and I have explored the fermented beverage at length, and to not find any familiar micro breweries on tap was amazing. Everything was new to me, starting at the tap.
For those who are always on the lookout for new beers, this is very important. Alternative options to sample different brews are to travel to other cities, like San Diego, and sample beers at breweries or pubs, or go online and order some bottles of beer, although some breweries don't bottle their beer, they only keg it. Imagine that shipping charge. With all that said, having a beer lounge catering to a niche outside the mainstream is not only outstanding but heaven sent .... even if we are talking beer.
Yet, there is a twist to all this. I frequent Abraxas as much as the guy next to me, and no matter how many beers I drink, I haven't been able to conquer the drafts on tap. The taps change almost bi-weekly, and before you are able to sample all, they are already gone. Abraxas doesn't do draft samplers, so basically you have to trek 12 oz. at a time. With ABVs ranging from 6% to 10%, the trekking starts to become difficult on the third round. Not only will you NOT be able to remember the name or style of what you are drinking, you won't remember anything related to color, taste, aroma, where you parked your car and who you came with.
Ah, the beer, the beer!
Perhaps the one other thing that I enjoy much at Abraxas is the laid back attitude and the camaraderie with fellow beer enthusiasts. I have been lucky enough to sample special editions, one time releases, non-distributed in Miami, and just plain obscure brews (literally). I can truly say that if you want to be at the edge of the craft beer world, Abraxas is your medium of transport.
But of course, not everything is beer in Abraxas. There is a happy hour, there is a trivia night, there is a Monday in the Biz with discounts for the military and those on the hospitality industry, and a $5 beer all night on Wednesdays. Plus, on par with the beer, you will find a playlist that is going to rock your world. And also a screen showing sports that nobody really cares to watch, although it has proven useful before.
For all those reasons, Abraxas is the cream of the crop when it comes to serving craft beer. They are open until dawn, so before you get on the expressway to drive home, stop by and lounge with a unique beer in your hand. Just watch out for men with pony tails. They are Casanovas, and people say they'll try to pick up your girlfriend, or boyfriend.
I love this place. It looks like a house, but is so much more. Okay, actually it's just a bar and lounge, but I liked it a lot. It was my favorite place that the Biff took me to in miami beach.
The trivia here is awesome. They don't keep you away from the luring gaze of your cell phone for longer than five to
Ten minutes at a time. Five questions are asked rapid fire and thrown up on a screen. And then a cell phone break. I feel like this cuts down on cheating and keeps the game legit and keeps players from getting antsy. All trivia should be done like this.
Lastly, we won. BOOMSHAKALAKA!
On the recommendation of Mister Miami, Johnny T, we ventured to Abraxas early on a Friday night. Good beer bars seem to be as elusive as a well-balanced federal budget in these parts of the country, but we knew that Abraxas would do our good ol' Midwestern hearts some good.
And it sure delivered.
It would be easy to miss from the street. No exterior signs of drunkenness. The inside is cozy, welcoming, chill and definitely un-SoBe. Dark, with comfortable couches, good music and just a couple of quiet patrons.
I immediately loved it.
Wanting to try local suds, I ordered a Swamp Head Midnight Oil, a delicious oatmeal coffee stout which delivers strong coffee flavors without bitterness, and thoroughly impressed me. I cannot recall my second round, Floridian as well, but it was a good  choice as well, albeit obviously not quite as memorable.
If you are looking to escape the "scene", come here to relax and sip on a pit or three. It's totally worth it.
Great local spot, hard to find, not many tourists. The bar staff here is hit and miss, sometimes you get someone really quick and nice, other times you can't get a drink since the bartender is on the phone.
They have an awesome selection of beer on tap and in bottles, and always have interesting options.
Prices are good, this place is a winner and on my short rotation of south beach bars I like to visit.
I'd been here 2 or 3 times in the past, but it was always at the end of the night after we'd already hit a few other places so I didn't feel I'd spent enough quality time at Abraxas to properly review it.
Most recently I came here as part of a group, and this was a good choice - There was plenty of room to accommodate us, even on a Saturday evening, and there were a few cozy seating areas and tables available for us to spread out a bit as well, as not everyone wanted to sit at the bar. Â Their beer selections ran the gambit in varieties/types, alcohol content and price, and the staff was helpful at choosing different beers to try, I simply had to indicate what I was in the mood for or what my preferences were (i.e. I explained that I wasn't a fan of IPA or sour, was looking for XYZ, etc. and they basically said "Oh, you should try ____, then"). Â Their suggestions were always spot on.
Beers here start at about $6 each and go up from there and their selection, as others have mentioned, is pretty amazing. Â The atmosphere is definitely laid back and chill in this dark bar in the bottom of an apartment building. Â My only real critical comments are that 1) They only have 1 restroom and it's unisex, so when this place is full of people who are drinking, there's nearly always a line to use it. Â Also, 2) IMO the service could be faster if they'd have more of the beers they offer in coolers out front near the bar, or if they'd take a few orders at a time before going back to retrieve them. Â I've noticed during all my visits here that they'll take an order from someone, then disappear for a few moments while they leave the bar and go around the back to get the drink(s) they've ordered, then return, serve them and ring them up. Â Then they'll take the next customer. Â Not terrible if the place isn't busy, but it can be a bit frustrating when there are more than a few patrons in the place.
Nice small town feel of an establishment. Our bartender was very kind and service was good. Draught selection was varied and not of an average nature. Refreshing to see. Â No food here, strictly a drinkers bar. The fight samplers were good and give you a nice variety without too much beer. Great way to sample and discover!
Review Source:I was introduced to this fine establishment by a friend who lives locally. Small, friendly, dimly lit, great rock music playing (not too loud that you can't hold a conversation) and an amazing beer selection...all the necessary ingredients for a great pub. If I lived in Miami Beach, I would come here at least 4 times a week. They have almost every IPA you could imagine. When you order a Duvel, they pour it into a Duvel stemmed goblet...all in the details. I went there almost every day for the 2 weeks I stayed in Miami Beach. Recommended.
Review Source:GREAT bar in a residential area of the beach, right off of 5th street; I'm so happy I finally made it out here! A group of us came last weekend to get the night started for the ball 'n chain's birthday, and all of us loved this place!
There are tons and tons of beer to choose from, a decent wine list, couches to chill out on, TV's set up, and a nice sized wrap-around bar. Abraxas is not fancy or "trendy" by any means, but it has a great atmosphere - very laxed and dive bar-like. There's parking around the corner for $10, or you can try your luck with some metered parking spaces a block or so down.
The prices aren't bad and the selection of beers is dynamite. I was stoked to see they had Ragin' Bitch in stock, which I've always had a hard time finding because it's so in demand!
Abraxas, many thanks for getting our night started right! We will definitely be back again!
Why 5 stars? Because this is the ideal bar.
 ---  ---  ---
1) Large beer selection
2) Comfortable couches/chairs all over
3) Friendly service
4) Not too crowded
The following is the list by which I rate bars, and are all of the characteristics of Abraxas Lounge. What I don't like about Miami is the crowded club life with house music and flashing lights. This place has none of that, making it my favorite nightlife spot in SoBe.
LOVED this place!!!! went on a friday night..the place wasnt crowded at all. mostly chill, quiet locals. the beers were great! sooooo many to choose from.
it feels like youre in someones basement up north. you def forget ure in miami.
not expensive at all.
parking was a bit of a pain, had to walk about 2blocks,most of the parking around the lounge is for residents only.
Chill spot in beautiful SoFi area of South Beach. Â
Dark and cozy, perfect for small group of friends gathering. Â Offers extensive beer selection as well as some wines. Â As a local, I love to go here because it's not packed with tourist.
Be sure to bring quarters for street parking.
Great local bar for craft beers. Take advantage of their happy hour special till 9pm. $4-$5 beers. This little cozy spot makes you feel like you are having a beer at your best friend's house. Made friends with the owner Mauricio, swell guy and watched the 12/12/12 concert on one if their many flat screen tvs. Arianna the bartender is very sweet. Definitely give this unassuming South Beach spot a shot. it doesn't disappoint, especially with their vast craft beer selection.
Review Source:Incredible beer list. Â Lots of sharing bottles (or non sharing if you like em big). Â Overall pretty quiet for a Saturday night. Â The bartender was excellent and beyond attentive and helpful. Â Place has a funky but cool vibe.
The only knock for me was the smoke. Â I am spoiled back home. Â It wasn't too bad.
Let's start with a positive, if your looking for a laid back, beer/wine (great beer selection) bar this place is great. Â It is especially good for a dude meetup before a game (emphasis on the pre-game, read-on) brew or three because the place looks like something my brother lived in while playing D&G for weeks at a time, aka the place is man cave dark. Â
Good for guys getting a brew, except, even being the only one in the bar for the end of the Georgia/Alabama game the barkeep wouldn't or couldn't turn the TV on over the speaker system. Whatever, moving on.
The music was 70's, and subpar at that, and finally, the smoke in this small, low ceilinged dank handout was overwhelming. I'm a casual smoker who enjoys a cigarette after a few drinks and if my eyes were struggling you know its a thick cloud.
Takeaway: Concept is good for the beer loving men who have no date or women with them, a true man hangout. Maybe it's just what SoFi ordered. Smoke filled takes away from the enjoyment and a tough place to bring a lady, four stars with better overhead ventilation.
The beer selection is the one of the most extensive and best in Miami. DRB rivals it but Abraxas is cheaper and has a bigger bar than DRB. The bartenders are nice and helpful and the crowd is just normal Miami Beach residents. They have trivia on Tuesday, which is always a lot of fun and competitive. I highly recommend it, it's is one of my favorite places to go in Miami.
Review Source:Everyone is always welcome at Abraxas but I've observed some weeknights are as self-segregated as a Sadie Hawkins Dance in the South during the 60s --
*Monday Bumday (In the Biz) 2-4-1 all night for those in the hospitality business. For servers, bartenders, and bouncers, Monday-Tuesday is their weekend. Expect it to get rowdy.
*Tuesday Boozeday (Trivia) Last time I participated it was just like Slumdog Millionaire... except in reverse. None of my life experiences helped me answer any of the questions. The triviaphiles, almost exclusively women, helped me realize my shortcomings --
Architecture, my knowledge of it is as bad as Jay-Z's knowledge of singing.
Botany, my brain only has enough storage capacity for edible and trance-inducing plants.
Tennis, the only people who should be watching non-contact sports are expecting mothers, small children, and inmates.
No worries, the ladies carried me the whole way but I answered both tie-breaker questions and they rewarded me by using a portion of their winnings to help pay my bar tab.
*Wednesdays Friendsday (Beer Novice/Enthusiasts)
Beer Tastings (1st and 3rd) - the brews you find and love are served in 2 oz. tasting glasses so the fun will be as fleeting as that night you lost your virginity. Can be miserable because you will inevitably find some brews you hate, yet have to squeeze down your throat like cod liver oil.
Geek Night (2nd and 4th) see more on that here --

*Thirsty Thursdays (Indie) a bunch these guys holding gluten-free beers -

*Freaky Friday (Happy Hour) the day all of the above unite to enjoy the largest selection of brews on the Beach.
The only drawbacks are...smoking is allowed indoors, service can be a little choppy and parking is as jacked-up as Jessica Simpson's pre-ProActiv face.
Miami Beach, you have a winner! Abraxas is the place to bring all the beer snobs/geeks/enthusiasts in your life you want to impress. The selection is outstanding and goes on for pages and pages. Even if you walk in with an idea of what you want, I encourage you to check out the chalk board, read the menu, investigate the seasonal offerings, find out what's new, and talk to your bartender. You may not change your mind but you will be educated on all things sudsy.
And, before I get back to the beer, I want to spend some time focusing on the vibe of the place. It's dark. It's small. It's relatively quiet. It has an excellent playlist. This is a place you come to catch up with friends, be alone with your thoughts or escape the heat with unbeatable liquid refreshment. This corner of SoFi couldn't be farther away from the 'woo hoo' madness of Collins and I love that. The serene neighborhood feel of the venue gives off a distinctly adult (as in, mature) impression and that's so welcomed. This is not a place for loud, bellowing bachelorette parties. You should be glad about this. If you're looking for a raucous, good-timin' saloon, look elsewhere. This is not to say that Abraxas takes itself too seriously. This is to say that it knows what it is and what it isn't. What it is is *the* place to come for craft brews, inventive drafts and an encyclopedia amount of beer selections -- all served in proper glassware.
Back to the beer... incredible. Words don't give credit to the selection and depth of the collection. Much respect to the owner for putting together a thoughtful menu with so much to choose from. And further respect for being a beer enthusiast. If you walk in here not knowing much about beer, you won't be turned away or sneered at. What's far more likely is that you'll be engaged about your tastes. That way, you'll be able to find a beer that works best for you. I've had all types here: browns, blondes, porters, stouts, lambics, wheats, etc. Never once have I been given the stink-eye about my selection. Beer can be intimidating. Abraxas is not. Beer lovers and the beer curious: you have found your one and only destination for what ales you. Look no further. You have arrived.
Abraxas is a nice quiet local bar on South Beach's "South of Fifth neighborhood. Â This is an area away from the crowded clubs, bars and restauranteurs attempting to get you into their establishment. Â If this is what you're looking for, you won't find it here. Â This is a quiet bar where you can sit and talk without some crazy drunk spilling their beer on you. Â The bartenders and patrons are always friendly and up for a good conversation. Reminds me of my days in Dublin, Ireland pubs.
Wednesdays are a particularly interesting day to visit because they offer "beer from around the world". Â There is a huge selection of foreign beer at half price. Â A cool way to try out new and unique flavors.
It's time to give Abraxas a hearty update. I've seen some beer bars, some of the nation's most renowned. The Toronado. The Map Room. Redlight Redlight. Somehow, Abraxas, while excellent, was always qualified with the tag "by Miami standards," somehow implying that it wasn't quite up to snuff compared to some of the national heavy hitters.
I don't know. Either the much-hyped bars are a little overrated, or Abraxas is a little underrated, or both...because there isn't a ton of difference in terms of selection. These are all bars that basically try to get all the special releases and whatnot that they can, trying to keep the serious beer people happy. Obviously, Abraxas is limited by the reality that powerhouse beer-geek-approved breweries like Russian River, Lost Abbey, Deschutes, Goose Island and Three Floyds don't distribute to Florida and probably never will. So what. Focus on what we do get, and you'll find a substantial complement of Cigar City and Terrapin, as well as occasional tap nights featuring local upstarts. If we can get it, there's a decent chance you'll find it at Abraxas - and if not, there's a big enough selection that finding a second choice isn't too difficult.
One of the criticisms frequently leveled at Abraxas is that it only has 8-10 taps. I'm going to turn around and say that you wouldn't *want* this place to have 50 taps, because they wouldn't turn over quickly enough, and that would lead to some stale beer. Draft can be nice, but draft isn't always necessarily better.
Also, if we are rating partly on a bar's atmosphere, I'd say Abraxas beats out all those places I listed above. Located in what was once a residence in the South of Fifth neighborhood, it has a home-y feel you can't get at too many other bars.
The famed Abraxas Pub Trivia is no longer (regularly) in effect, but I can't say I'm mourning it. It seemed to attract a high percentage of snarky hipsters who smoked way too many cigarettes and ordered Belzebuth just because it's 13% and not that expensive relative to other high-ABV beers. Come on, people, it tastes like bad pear-infused vodka with some bubbles. I might prefer it over Four Loko, but not by much. At any rate, I'm sure they will still offer Music Trivia on occasion, at which point I will go and obliterate all of you with my brews and tunes-loving all-star team, "Grand Funk Aleroad." Yes, I'm talking trash - that's an open challenge.
"What a local beach spot should really be like."
As a local of the beach and super tired of the club scene I yearned for something easy going where I can have a beer with friends without the hassle of the velvet ropes.
During a Google search for trivia in Miami Beach, I found Abraxas Louge. Â
I am really glad I had the pleasure to stumble upon this place. Â The crowd was very friendly, beer selection top notch, and happy hour until 9pm with $4 craft beers.
It was Tuesday night which was Trivia night. My girlfriend had a blast with a bar tab of only $25 for 5 craft beers ( not those watered down crap you see TV commercials for ).
Long story short, this is our new Tuesday Date Night spot.
My experience at Abraxas is a testament to what is great about Yelp! Â I only found out about the place from Yelp. Â I was searching for some new beer places with great selection, and Abraxas was one of four in South Beach that I read about. Â But thanks to the reviewers whom have come before me, they convinced me to try Abraxas from all of their positive reviews. Â Thank you.
I arrived at Abraxas last night kind of getting off to the wrong foot...literally. Â Well, my gps took me right to Abraxas, but there was no parking to be found. Â I went up and down every street, but could only find residential parking. Â After 15 minutes of circling I finally found a spot only to put my credit card in to pay for parking and it got stuck. Â I finally got the card yanked out only to have the sole of my shoe come undone. Â Well, if anyone was ever in need of a cold beer, it was me!
I was impressed with the beer menu. Â The bartender showed me the menu and I was impressed how thick it was only to find out a minute later that there was a second beer menu! Â Both bartenders were so friendly and helpful in making selections. Â I felt like I was cramming for a final exam with how in depth I read the menus. Â I wanted to be sure to really see all of the goodies they had. Â I only had a couple of rounds but I look forward to coming back again sometime.
The darkness of the lounge made it difficult to see the menu. Â I had to use the light of my iPhone to view it. Â But that was fine for me because when you are not looking at the menu, the darkness of the place added to my enjoyment of the lounge. Â I was also surprised that for such an ENORMOUS beer selection, they only had about a dozen actually on tap. Â But like all of their beer, the ones that were on tap were still unique and the fact that I wouldn't drink all 12 anyway, I guess then it was plenty after all. Â The amount of beers they have by bottle is astonishing!!
If you like beer, you will like Abraxas. Although the tap selection is somewhat limited, it does have a smart selection. There are many bottled beers to choose from. If you're looking for foreign and American craft beers, Abraxas has many.
The bar sits approx 12 people. It also has 3 lounge areas. Unfortunately, smoking is allowed in Abraxas, like all of Florida where food isn't served.
Great music! Clean. Knowledgeable bartenders. Out of the way. Unpretentious. Friendly.
After a couple of visits here I can finally review this place. Location is awesome, tucked away in a residential area south of fifth, where all the locals hangout. You can not miss it from the outside, large white building with a blue neon sign on the corner. Parking is metered on the street, and when we pulled up the other night bam spot right in front, perfect!
When you walk in it is very dark, nothing really stands out in here as far as decor, other than the darkness. Nice couches are set up with tables throughout the room with a long bar and stools right when you walk in.
What is the best part about this bar? Geez, their beer selection is incredible here. Slowly I am learning more and more about some great beers and really learning to appreciate them. As far as I am concerned this bar has the best beer selection in all of South Florida. Both times I have been here the official beer snob Patrick L. has been here with me so finding a great suggestion is always good from him. The other night I first ordered off the happy hour menu, for $4 I got a great IPA, it was good.
Then Patrick was nice enough to order an expensive bottle of beer for us to share that was aged in a Sauvignon Blanc barrel. Oh wow, it was herbaceous, minerals, the bouquet was just as beautiful as a Sauvignon Blanc wine. Different from what I normally drink but it was awesome. It was complex with different flavors, you had some grapefruit, a bit of sour notes, so much going on. Thanks P, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Great neighborhood bar with friendly bartenders, great selection and you can order food for delivery. Awesome place to go chill with friends.
Also, very chill relaxed with no pretentious attitude here nor hefty prices!
Finally made it to this hipster heaven! After hearing Yelpers rave about the many charms of Abraxas for several years - I'm not sure why it took me so long to pass by.
It's dark in here. Really dark. But surprisingly charming.
I ordered a mead ... and it was not what I expected. Frankly, it was gross. Lol, that's what I get for trying something new! The bartender took it away and tried some himself - and even admitted he wouldn't drink it unless paired with the right sweet. I was bummed that they still charged me for the rather pricey drink ... considering I took one sip.
They have a nice variety of ciders, which I appreciate. I tried a new one, and had a Magner's, my fave.
The bartender was friendly, and the patrons were a totally mixed crowd. Very relaxed, with lots of regulars.
Abraxas was not what I expected , but sometimes, surprises are a good thing. Stoked to be starting our Zack Attack pub crawl here in a couple weeks!
How is it that I only just discovered this little SoBe gem?!
Happy hour from 5 til 9 pm? Unheard of! A decent selection of beers and some house wines for $4/each. (I can recommend the Breckenridge Agave Wheat beer.) Beyond the HH menu, there is a wider selection of beverages behind the bar as well.
Very chill. Our little group were the only ones there around 7 so we just sat out on the porch and chatted. I can't wait to come back next Tuesday to check out Trivia Night!
We were all wondering what "Abraxas" actually means so I looked it up and figured I'd share because I'm a dorky random info aficionado. :)
ABRAXAS: a word of mystic meaning in the system of the ancient Gnostic religion. The 7 letters spelling its name represent each of the 7 classic planets--Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. It was engraved on certain antique gemstones, called Abraxas stones, which were used as amulets or charms. The word may be related to Abracadabra, although other explanations exist.
Abraxas trivia night is like anonymous sex. You're getting fucked in a South Beach residential area and you'd rather not tell anyone about it. But you go back and do it every week.
That's pretty much my story. I have yet to win first place even though my team has gotten as far as having to decide the winner based on a paper, rock, scissors match because the emcee ran out of questions to break the tie. By the way, it's paper, rock, scissors; not rock, paper, scissors; not scissors, paper, rock; no. Paper, rock, scissors is alphabetical and logical. If you try to argue this point with me you will LOSE.
I've been to Abraxas on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Tuesday nights have trivia so it gets pretty packed, though the "packedness" is offset by the funk music they blast on the sound system. If there was a real life soundtrack to getting laid 'n paid in a bank vault where you're given 4 minutes to bang and collect bucks, funk music would be it. And to all you guys reading this thinking "four minutes, hah, bitch, I need like 4 hours" you need to shut the fuck up right now. If there's some billionaire out there really giving you 4 minutes to bust a nut and use the remaining time to collect as much cash as you can while funk music plays in the background you'd prematurely ejaculate before they even start playing James Brown's Payback.
What was I talking about ag--oh, right, Abraxas. The Wednesday I went they had a beer tasting thing going on, and from my understanding this happens often on Wednesdays. It was worth it, they had some good microbrews on the list and even though some douche with a ponytail kept hitting on my date only because I was 40 minutes late I still enjoyed myself.
Saturdays maintain a good crowd. My date that night (note to self, stop taking women to Abraxas) also started getting chatted up by some guy while I was in the restroom.
Their selection of beer is great; beer from around the globe. It was Abraxas that introduced me to Southern Tier Imperial Choklat Stout. Let's not dick around here, folks, that beer will turn your unborn children into alcoholics. It comes in a 22oz bottle, and the moment you take a sip George Washington Carver will rise from the dead and personally make you a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. He'll even cut the crust off for you if you're the kind of piece of shit that does that.
What was I reviewing ag--oh, Abraxas. Listen, give this place a look if you want a good beer at a good price. The parking situation is a little wonky since it's nestled in a residential area, but if you're an American you're probably overweight and could use a powerwalk anyway.
PEOPLE WHO WOULD ENJOY IT: Trivia lovers; beer lovers.
PEOPLE WHO WOULD NOT ENJOY IT: Any guy on a date.
I hate smokers.
How big of a cocksucker do you have to be to smoke INSIDE when there are nonsmokers present? I don't care if there is food being served or not. I can't understand why you would smoke even in your own home. I mean, do you ever plan on having guests? No one wants to smell that funk.
And why the hell would anyone under 30 smoke in the first place? I can maybe understand for old people but smoking has never been cool during my lifetime.
I was sick on the way home.
I came for the trivia night that Abraxas hosts every Tuesday night.
The only redeeming quality I can mention is they have a cool beer list.
I would never give any place that allows smoking more then 2 stars. Here is what they did to lose the other star:
1) No lights. whatsoever. I mean, your hosting a trivia night... you turn up the lights a little? I saw one team using a lighter, because if you pull out your cell phone you are disqualified.
2) It really couldn't have been any slower. It was supposed to start at 8:30 (which it didn't) and it didn't end till 11.
3) The bathroom is GROSS. Complete with shower stall full of junk.
Summary: Dive bars are only cool if the bar is cool to begin with.
This place is just a dive.
There is a bar for every one of our many moods. Some are quiet and dark others flooded with light, color, and sound.
For the I'm-not-really-in-the-mood-to-go-out crowd there is Abraxas. An apt building/old house in South Beach's SoFi neighborhood is home to this beer den. Once you step inside it'll take your eyes a moment to adjust but once they do you'll notice there isn't much to see. Reminiscent of a large, co-ed apt in a collegiate town this place screams dark, ample, comfort. You'll spend some time perusing their large and well-stocked beer list, once you've settled on a brew, pick a couch, and make yourself at home. There is no food on-site but you can always have something delivered from nearby eateries. Although, given the amount of heavy smoking eating might be the last thing on your mind. Cough, cough breathe cough again
Overall, a relaxed, anything goes vibe perfect for the anti-South Beach crowd on South Beach.
Note: I've been to their Tuesday Trivia and it's a lot of fun. Just be aware that the trivia here is full of long pauses and breaks.
Trivia, couches, and an encyclopedia of a beer selection what more can a girl looking to hang out on a Tuesday night ask for?
So why the 3 stars instead of more you may ask, put simply, SMOKE! It's allowed, 'nough said.
Now that, that's out of the way back to the good things about Abraxas.
The atmosphere is very laid back, none of this pretentious beach crowd to worry about. The beer list is vast and full of yuminess I am dying to try! Last but not least, they host trivia every Tuesday! Fun times!
Abraxas has won a spot in my Rolodex saved for places to go when you don't know where to go. I can work on my beer knowledge and just shoot the breeze on the sofa.
This truly is a lounge for lounging around. Â The minute you walk in you feel as though perhaps you've stepped into the basement of your best friend's house. It is cozier than cozy, with its dim lighting and its old wooden floors. Â Couches layered with pillows line the walls. Â You could practically nap here after you've had one too many Delirium Noels (oh and they have Delirium Tremens on draft... only place I've seen that has this as of yet- maybe I haven't been paying attention, or maybe it's true!)
This place totally used to be someone's house- when you walk into the bathroom you'll realize this because a) the size of the bathroom is rather large, and b) there's a shower in it. Â I think its atmosphere is, in part, due to this fact. Â
They have a pretty big beer selection, which adds to its awesomeness as a bar, but there are a couple of strikes against this place. Â 1) there was only one bartender, which made it really annoying to get a beer since it was rather packed (trivia apparently brings all the locals to the yard), and 2) they allow smoking inside- which for me is always a big grossness factor. Â
All in all, however, I really loved this place.... maybe next time it won't take me forever to get a beer- and if it does, I still think I'll keep coming back. Â Besides, I have to get a taste of their 5 hour happy hour on fridays...2 for 1 drinks for that long of a time span spells nothing but trouble! I can't wait!
Tucked away from the hustle, bustle and attitude of South Beach is this hidden gem. A great place to have a drink or three. The location is perfect, in a low-key area, but still a stone's throw from SoBe nightlife. Their beer list is fabulous and the prices are down to earth. The most I've encountered in South Florida and I've been to quite a few watering holes here.
They also have wine for you beer-haters out there. Owners are cool and blend in with the crowd. They are very hands-on, to say the least. So if you are looking to knock back a few in a laid-back atmosphere, this place is for you. Cheers!
