Mindspill, Soul filled! That was the refrain from the small crowd gathered at Alps on Monday night. Open mic night hostess Nita Hurt hyped up the group of ten, some there for their appreciation of spoken word poetry and others who simply wandered in for a drink. I'd never been to Alps before and would usually never drive that far from my house for drinks on a Monday, but live raw poetry is a rare find in this town and it came highly recommended by a good friend.
The crowd was sparse but the poets were all the way live, spitting incredible verses with the rhythm and timing of a song. Love, hate, feminism, racism, politics, sex and more--the poets, some old pros and other first timers weaved intricate paths through thought.
I don't know what Alps is like on the other nights, but Monday was awesome. Yes, Alps is a nice place, with cozy little club with a small VIP seating area, a long bar, outdoor seating, a DJ and a spinning disco ball. But on Mondays it really has something special with its open mic night and I encourage any poets, poetry lovers or anyone who just wants to try something different to check it out.
