After trying this place once, I know I will definitely be back. Â Their Portabella Mushroom pizza loaded with garlic on whole wheat pizza was amazing. Â The bacon adds a nice crunch to it. They know how to make whole wheat pizza taste good. Â I only wish the pizza was a little bigger for the price.
Review Source:First, I should state that I've only used their delivery service - never eaten in the restaurant. Their delivery is top-notch. They have consistently arrived a bit sooner than promised delivery times, and the pizza has been as if it just came out of the oven. No surly mumbling delivery folks from this establishment! They've been great with no exceptions.
Now for the food: favorite delivery from Amici's is their Portabella Mushroom pizza (minus the bacon). Gorgeous mushrooms, to-die for roasted garlic, and a smooth cheese. Have tried both the whole wheat and regular crusts and enjoyed both.
The Garden Salad with their homemade garlic parmesan dressing is something I could eat every night! Topped with crunchy veggies and accompanied by the pesto breadsticks make it one of the best garden salads in the area.
Although I've just mentioned favorites, the Black Bean pizza is another treat, as is the Pesto Pizza. And both lasagnas have been greatly enjoyed here.
I used to order pizzas from local venues offering more traditional pies, but honestly feel much better dialing up Amici's primarily because of the taste, but also because the quality of what is served here leaves the other places FAR behind.
I've been going to Amici's for years, and I have always loved it. I don't go constantly, but at least a couple times a year.
The pizza is some of the best I've had around here. I love the healthy/gluten free/etc options, especially the vegan pizza with black beans and corn. The martinis are good too - a large variety of options, especially if you like flavored martinis (not really my thing, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate it).
Definitely a good place to go for a more casual, enjoyable evening with a few friends.
Amici's is an excellent place to visit if you're looking to try unique gourmet pizzas. However, my fiancé and I tend to stop by for a drink or two instead. The cozy indoor bar seating and the outdoor patio in the back are perfect for relaxing and enjoying a good drink. They have an extensive list of creative martinis and a few Michigan craft brews on tap. The staff is friendly and accommodating. There's a reason they call it a "Living Room" -- it feels like home!
Review Source:One of the best places to chill out in the whole area, with a beautiful, secluded patio out back and a cosy, dim atmosphere on the inside. Â People come from all over the place to sit outside with a martini, and with good reason.
As for the martinis, there's literally about a hundred options, ranging from basic, to fruity, to crazy-sweet, and many incorporate nice little textural touches like cookie pieces, crystallized sugars, drizzles of this-or-that, and other nice flavorings. Â If you're in the mood for a serious man-bar, this probably isn't the place, admittedly. Â But if you're in the mood for sissy drinks of the best quality, it fits the bill -- and then some.
The pizza, in my opinion, is long on flavor but a little short on texture. Â The toppings are good and there's a range of interesting options, but their attempts to go healthy with the crusts causes their pies to fall a bit on the mushy side. Â To me, the crust is on the key differentiators for pizza, whether it's crunchy/crispy Neapolitan style, chewy/toothsome New York style, or burnt-cheese delicousness Detroit style, I think it always helps to have a little bite to your slice. Â But Amici's is a little soft.
Still, the flavors are good, and the pizza is a sidelight for the drinks and atmosphere, anyway. Â Definitely worth a trip there, wherever you are in Metro Detroit.
How have I lived in Berkley for 6 years and not reviewed Amici's yet?! Â I don't come here as often as I should. Every time I am here I love it. The pizza is great and has some interesting combinations. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options and gluten free crust is an option as well. When you dine in, they bring yummy breadsticks with marinara sauce for dipping - my 2 year old probably could have eaten 2 orders of them and been happy.
On our most recent trip to Amici's it was pretty busy and a woman working there (who I later realized was one of the owner's after watching Amici's featured on Cooking Channel's Pizza Cuz) brought my daughter a ball of raw pizza dough to play with to keep her occupied while we waited for our pizza, which I found to be pretty thoughtful.
My absolute favorite part of Amici's is the martini's. They have a giant list of delicious martini's and I have yet to have one that is bad. They recently had a special one, a salted caramel-tini made with Stoli Salted Caramel vodka - which I didn't know even existed. I had two of these yummy pieces of heaven in a glass one night with my friends and then made my family come back about a week later for dinner just so I could have another one.
There is a nice outdoor patio with 6-8 tables that are really nice in the summer. Just writing this review makes me want to take a trip here soon!
My boyfriend has been raving about the pizza at Amici's for as long as I've known him, so when we were finally able to stop by last night, I was delighted.
The menu had more martini options than I had thought humanly possible, all of which looked delicious. Â I ended up ordering a cider, but look forward to trying something a bit stronger next time. Â The pizzas were unique and enticing, with plenty of vegan options. Â We ended up going with the black been and the Caribbean jerk chicken, both on whole wheat. Those two, plus the drinks and breadsticks, were more than enough to fill us up with plenty to take home for the next day's lunch.
The service was also superlative. Â We were helped promptly and courteously. Â The staff even offered to move us when the two pizzas appeared to be too much for our little table to handle.
I look forward to going back!
I'll give it 3&1/2 stars.
Great, fresh, obviously quality ingredients. Â We have been here many times mostly when it was relatively new but not so much in the past few years. Â Went there the other day and had the same hassles and ate the same good wheel and realized why we really don't go there a lot even though it is 1/2 mile away.
The negative:
Kinda pricey, entrance/lobby/host stand(lack thereof) confusion and waiting to be acknowledged for a table, and the pizza sauce (obviously fresh but just not quite right....can't put my finger on it, Most of the time it has a good vibe but sometimes it feels like you walked into the land of aholes who are very impressed with themselves.
(Really dudes, burberry scarves, Northface jackets, flared jeans, and french blue dress shirts are ALL SO OUT OF FASHION.....STOP IT! Â I wouldn't have a problem if they weren't drunkenly sneering at my kids.
The positive:
Like I mentioned, they use fresh and quality ingredients, close to home, open somewhat late,
I think the basis of my review comes down to the fact that I am not a vegan and I could give less of a shit if I eat diary, meat, gluten or real cheese. Â So, I am just not impressed at all and I don't like paying premium prices for pizza when I am not a hippy, green freak, allergic, intolerant or on a diet....obviously, I am not their target market. Â I mean absolutely no malice and I am happy they are doing well and happy to have them in Berkley but it's not really a staple in our rotation.
If you like a place with a large selection of martinis then this is the spot. Â The pizza is pretty good too. I haven't run into any service problems from the waitstaff. Â However, this place can get pretty busy on the weeekends so there may be a wait. I have been here a few times with my husband, but I always think I should have a girls night out here.
Review Source:LOVE AMICI'S!!!! They really put effort into keeping their business green! I love all of the vegan/vegetarian/gluten free options. I love the quaint atmosphere and extensive martini list. My favorite is the Elderflower Martini. Also the pesto breadsticks with their homemade tomato sauce are to die for. I could go on! This place is one of my favorite spots for out-of-towners and myself. I can always count on great food and drink from AMICI'S.
Review Source:Great neighborhood place. I miss the days when I lived close enough to walk to it! Well, I lived close enough that I knew I could drink a lot and walk home. They have an excellent martini menu! I would also recommend getting a cucumber cosmopolitan- It isn't on the menu, but just ask for it.
The patio out back is really charming in the summer; feels like an intimate garden somewhere in Napa. Pizza is very creative and they use quality ingredients.
GREAT date place.
The food was good but the waiter ruined the fun for us. I believe his name was Taylor. There were 5 of us and 2 were looking over the drink menu and he came back literally every two minutes to ask if they were ready to order. Â
Having waited tables for 11 years, I know that when a customer has their menu/drink menu open and are actively looking it over, they are "probably" not quite ready. I guess this is something our waiter hasn't quite mastered yet. Â His constant return to the table while they tried to decide made them feel hurried.
He might also learn how to smile once in a while.
The food was good though.
However, Taylor decided for himself that we must be ready to leave because without asking, he walked over and put to-go boxes ON TOP of our pizzas and walked away!
We removed them and continued eating but that cost him part of his tip.
We may go back to Amici's but I guarantee you, we won't be in Taylor's section.
This pizza, I dig. It's good enough that I'm actually willing to order it regularly even though it is most certainly on the pricey side (with delivery, tax and a 20% tip, an eight-slice gourmet pizza runs around $25). It is really that delicious. The whole wheat bread? Off the chain. The variety of ingredients? Overwhelming. The customer service? Flippin' great (seriously, phone order people have a great attitude - except for one weird time when they told me my house, 3 miles away, was outside the delivery zone. I told them I was in Pleasant Ridge instead of Oak Park - which is actually farther - and they agreed to deliver. Bizarre.). Fast delivery. This pizza arrives and I am ecstatic.
In particular, Amici's has become my go-to "junk food" choice when I am craving pizza, but don't want to blow my diet. I just adore it.
Also the website is very well done. I am dumbfounded when, in 2010, businesses fail to provide helpful information online.
Also, the restaurant itself is just lovely. It's not particularly fancy, but the food and drink/cocktail selection is great, so it's a nice place to go with friends.
Lovely patio for dining. Really aapreciate that they offer a whole wheat crust option. Creative topping combinations, love the chunky tomato herb sauce - the roasted pepper pizza was tasty (although I would switch out the feta for goat cheese). Complimentary breadsticks are a classy touch. Our server was efficient but aloof. The hostess was way friendly.
I'm pretty particular about my whole wheat pizza crust. There's is good, but it needs more whole wheat (less white) flour and a little more crisp and a little more spring. Plus it's kind of dry - it would help to brush it with a smidge of olive oil before it hits the oven.
I'll definitely go back.
Short and sweet here.... long time visitor, first time reviewer. Â The pizza is quite delicious and offers LOTS of delicious, unique options. Â Breadsticks and pesto are great, salads are really nice, really fresh.... Â drink menu is awesome without being overwhelming. Â Bonus points for a really nice patio. Â Is a tiny bit pricey, but the extensive options and dietary options make up for it!!!
Review Source:My husband and I met a few friends here on a lovely Saturday evening around 8:30pm. Â It wasn't too crowded, and we had attentive service and were able to get a table on the back patio (so wonderful!) very easily.
We split an order of inexpensive, totally delicious pesto breadsticks. Â I was amazed at how cheap they were! Â I think it was something like $3.25 for ten breadsticks with wonderful pesto on top and marinara on the side for dipping.
I suppose the cheap karma ran out on those breadsticks, though. Â I ordered a gimlet with whatever bottom shelf vodka they use and my husband ordered a Maker's Mark Old Fashioned. Â His drink was $7. Â Mine was $8.50. Â Makes no sense, right? Â Apparently a gimlet is a "martini" on their menu. Â I was a bit miffed about that.
Additionally, I have NEVER been pushed out of a restaurant in the way I was here. Â The place wasn't busy at all -- no one was waiting for a table outside! -- and several waitresses came over about 5 minutes apart asking if we were waiting for another round of drinks. Â We felt as though they couldn't wait to get us out of there. Â This made my experience less than pleasant.
I'll go back -- but I guess I need to order more to make it worth their while?! Â And I will be sure to check their special martini menu to make sure some non-martini drink is on there...
I've been here many many times as it's a convenient location for the group that I meet up with, and they offer a gluten-free pizza, which is a must-have for one of my friends.
Well, those are the pluses.
I wish I could give Amici's more than two stars, I really do. Â Their Brandy Alexanders are insanely tasty, and the patio is great during warmer months (dive-bombing bees aside). Â But...I just can't.
For one, parking is a bitch and a half. Â Don't even bother trying to find a spot out back, since the surrounding businesses threaten to tow your ass (even if it's after their business hours) if you dare encroach upon THEIR PARKING SPOTS!!!! Â Find a (free) spot along Twelve Mile rather than deal with this level of hostility. Â
Second, the prices are quite high for the quality of food. Â The food isn't bad, but for the prices...I'd definitely expect more.
Third, and perhaps my biggest gripe...the service. Â I'm married to a chef, I am more than aware when something is the kitchen vs. the wait staff's fault, and I normally tip 20% MINIMUM. Â This is the only place I have ever EVER left less than a 15% tip. Â Met up with my girlfriends, asked for a double on my drink since I wasn't planning on staying late, and just didn't feel like waiting (from previous experience) for the waitress to amble on over for me to order another. Â Been there, done that, WAITED. Â Our waitress stared at me as if I had two heads. Â She shook HER head in a confused manner. Â Finally she gathered herself together enough to say "Umm, we can't do that."
Me = WHAT?
I don't like to be a bitch, so I said fine, bring me the drinky apparently the only way you know how to make it. Â Received it about ten minutes later...even though I could just do a streeeeetch to the left and touch the bar with my fingers.
Fast-forward to later in the evening, me ready to leave. Â I told the waitress I needed my tab, as I needed to get going. Â She said okay...and I never saw her again. Â I sat and waited...and waited...and waited. Â I had to get going. Â From previous experience ordering, I knew exactly what my total would be so I ended up leaving exactly that in cash. Â Plus 25 cents. Â And I told my friends (who were hanging out a bit longer) that no it wasn't a mistake, the extra quarter was my waitress's tip. Â
I'm not normally That Bitch who stiffs the waitress, but I was genuinely so pissed over the experience...it's the one and only time I've pulled that stunt. Â I hope she got the message.
I've never tried the take-out service so I can't comment on that, but anytime the topic of Amici's is broached as a meet-up with my friends, I try to suggest alternatives.
-Very good food. Â Fresh. Local. Gluten-free options. Great pizza.
-great martini menu
-cooks present the food and are actually pretty nice when they do it.
-Floor staff/Bartenders could use a little improvement. Â Not very attentive, nor do they very pleasant attitudes, nor do they have any kind of urgency when moving about.
-when the back porch is closed during the cold months, it is very cramped inside.
Although they probably intended it the other way around, I like to think of Amici's as an amazing martini bar who- oh by the way...also has decent pizza.
Their martinis really are to die for. Particularly the basil infused dirty. It's the perfect complement to a Margarita pie.
I know it's sacrilege, and I hope I don't get stoned to death for saying so, but their pizza is just ok. I can see what they're trying to do. It's healthy pizza made with healthy ingredients...but that's just it. It tastes healthy. The crust is a little cardboardy.
The thing that really makes it worthy of going back for more is that it is served without the usual side of guilt that comes with eating pizza. Although, after 2 martinis, I'm not sure I'd be feeling any guilt anyway : )
I went to Amici's with a friend I hadn't seen in ages. Â We were about to peruse the long list of martinis when we saw the special on the board - caramel apple martini! Â I hate overly sweet drinks, but this was surprisingly perfectly balanced for such a sweet-sounding drink.
We then ordered the artichoke pizza (from the website: "mixture of artichokes, fresh spinach, plum tomatoes, walnuts, ricotta and fontina cheese"). Â We went for the traditional crust, as my friend said that the whole wheat crust was unfortunately not very good. Â While we waited for the pizza, we were given some pesto breadsticks and tomato sauce to start. Â Um, I had no idea that the pizza came with free breadsticks... awesome! Â The pesto was pretty light in flavor. Â I think garlic haters would probably be okay with them. Â I love garlic, though, so I was hoping for a flavor explosion.
The pizza was tasty as well. Â I thought the walnuts tasted a bit off, but maybe that was just me (not the biggest fan of tree nuts in general, although I will still eat them). Â The other ingredients, though, were very tasty, and I ate way too much pizza. Â I will admit that this was not the best pizza, but I still thought it was very tasty, and I liked the selection of toppings. Â Warning for fans of thick Detroit square pizzas: the crust is on the thinner side.
Bottom line: I would totally go back for the chill atmosphere, more fun martinis, tasty pizza topping combinations, and free breadsticks (haha).
Yum. Amici's. Just freaking yum. I went here recently for my best friends birthday, and I must say, I was very happy with what I got.
Upon entering, you will notice that this place looks like the type of place that knows what its doing. They have great decor, plenty of seating and a pretty bitchin' patio. They can also seat larger groups, which is awesome for anyone who likes to bring a few friends along.
Service here is pretty good. We had someone bringing us bread the entire time we were waiting for our pizza, as well as the server making sure we had full refreshments. The wait for the food wasn't that bad, considering how packed it was. Saturday afternoon/evenings are not a good time to go if you don't like waiting, but you knew that.
The food though is where this place makes me smile. I had three different types of pizza that night, even though I forget two of them. The main one I was eating though was the blackened chicken pizza, I believe. And damn, my friends, what a pizza that was. You can tell they use top notch ingredients and make their food with passion. Delicious.
This place would be absolutely perfect, but its really easy to rack up a heck of a bill here. Its the type of place that is good for dinner, but when you add in drinks, you're gunna be toppling the already shaky money man.
I've been back to Amici's / The Living Room numerous times since my first review, and I've since had a chance to try a number of their pizzas.
Delicious.
The pizzas are all delicious. I've had the basic cheese and the black bean pizza. They were both great options and left me full and satisfied, if not craving more.
The martinis are still the best part, though. They always have some new options, and I have yet to try one that I don't like.
Did I seriously forget to write a review about Amici's? How could I - this place holds its own place in my monthly budget. Wow, I'm slacking.
I can come off as a snob when it comes to getting dinner - I'll eat 97 percent of pizzas, but chances are I'll be dabbing the grease off the top and peeling off the pepperoni/bacon/other meat cramping my style.
Then Amici's entered my life. Mid-college. Pizza hasn't tasted the same since.
Call me weird, but I prefer a wheat crust pizza with asparagus instead of a super supreme pile of toppings. Their signature pies are just pure deliciousness - do not shy away from what you think sounds silly. One of my favorites is the salmon pizza... instant craving now.
Tips if you're trying this place out for the first or fifth time:
** Can't decide which to get? They'll let you split your pie in half so you can try two different tastes.
** Breadsticks come with the pizza. Ask for the parmesan romano dressing with your bread/pizza - a fantastic sub for ranch and a perfect compliment to the homemade marinara dipping sauce.
** Peek at the board near the bar and on the piano for the day's specials. Drinks and pizza at a discount sometimes can help settle the internal debate of what to get.
** If you're making a night of it, save room for a sweet martini after dinner. Key Lime Pie, Samoas, Almond Joy, Banana Split... yea, all liquid desserts.
** If there are no tables when you walk in, make sure you find the staffer who is keeping the list for a table. Chances are, the list will be on the back of a bio-degradable plate in his/her back pocket :)
Last note - I originally fell in love with this place because it's perfect for the hippie like me - example: forks/knives made of potato product (so they completely decompose), so brownie points to any guys looking for a way to impress their environmentally-friendly gal.
Sometimes a pizza place is more than just a pizza place. Â Sometimes, you want something a little fancier than the usual cheese and pepperoni. Sometimes, a relaxing booth and a good martini is just what the doctor ordered. Â
Yes, Amici's has pepperoni or Italian sausage, if you insist, but take a chance on something out of the ordinary. Â My favorites include: the Caribbean Spicy Jerk Chicken Pizza with peanut-ginger sauce, pineapples and Mozzarella; the Blackened Chicken Pizza with scallions, Monterey Jack cheese and fresh herb tomato sauce; and the Pesto Pizza with fresh broccoli, tomatoes, Ricotta and Mozzarella cheeses.
I went back to Amici's a week ago. It was very good as usual. It was packed and we still got a seat quick and drinks even quicker. We ordered the Blackened Chicken Pizza. It was great, baked to perfection and obviously made with high quality ingredients. The side salad I order was large enough for two people and also made well.
Upon entering the restaurant I noticed a sticker on the door that said they are a "green" establishment. My reaction to this was positive. However, I did not think that I would be eating on paper plates and using paper silverware. I guess I have two questions/gripes about this: 1.) With energy efficient dishwashers, would it not be just as "green" to have real plates and silverware? 2.) Amici's pizza is not cheap. I actually say that it borders on the gourmet. Hence the two $$ price group. I don't like the Idea of eating pricey pizza with disposable silverware.
I totally understand that the paper goods they are using are made of recycled materials. I also understand that they recycle them AGAIN after use... but I have a hunch it uses more energy to turn used recycled plates and forks into a plates and forks again, then it would to wash re-useable plates and forks.
Bottom line: The pizza gets 4 stars... the experience gets 2 stars.
I went to Amici's after a recommendation from a friend and after reading some reviews here, and all I have to say is WOW.
The martini menu is great. Â I had a poma-tini (pomegranate) which was delicious, and my friend had the lychee martini, also delicious. Â We got the roasted red pepper pizza on wheat crust (feta cheese, red peppers, mozzarella, and a really good tomato sauce). Â The wheat crust isn't thin, but it's delicious. I really appreciate a restaurant that uses the freshest ingredients, organic when possible, and there were also several vegan items on the menu (ok... vegans are sometimes obnoxious to eat with, yes, and I am not vegan myself, but if a restaurant can make a vegan pizza taste delicious, bring it on). Â if you're not into martinis, by the way, the wine list has a good selection of organic wines, too.
We got to Amici's at 8:00 on a Saturday night and it wasn't especially busy, but by 9:00/9:30 it was BUMPIN'. Â Very busy. Â Very tasty. I'll definitely be back!
Amici's Living Room at first glance appears to be a great establishment. Â It's beautiful inside. There is pizza and martinis. Â It is locally owned and located in up-and-coming downtown Berkley. Â However, if you really pay attention there are a lot of problems with Amici's. Â I will admit that there is nothing wrong with this place it's just not what I want for pizza. Â If the following resonate with you, you may want to pass. Â If you're a locavore looking for vegan pizza, gluten-free beer, biodegradable flatware, a lot of mixed drink options, and a lounge type atmosphere this is probably the place for you.
First, when you walk in there is no hostess stand, no cash register, no counter, no sign saying "Hostess Will Seat You". Â Nothing. Â I found it frustrating and very awkward to be standing waiting for someone to direct us, especially while there are tables of people on all sides. Â I'm sure they didn't like people hovering as I didn't want to hover over their meal. Â Eventually someone came up and asked how many in our party to be seated. Â It would just be nice if there was a sign.
Second, the space is small and awkward. Â The aisles are narrow, the tables stick out, and a server is always rushing though. Â This is because the kitchen is kind of in the middle of the restaurant. Â There is a back door, a back patio, a front entrance and a bar. Â All scattered around the place so someone is always walking in, walking out, running to the bar, running to the kitchen, etc. Â I find it uncomfortable and frustrating. Â I don't know how to solve this problem but I guess Amici's needs a new space. Â Until then, it's stressful and I will be reluctant to return.
I will admit that I really like the decor. Â I think it's beautiful and cozy. Â It's full of warm colors and is contemporary but with a bit of a throwback feel to the 50s or 60s.
Third, I think the pizza is just okay. Â Actually, I don't even like to think of it as pizza since it's just a different taste than other pizzas from chains. Â It's not the deep dish, greasy cheesy pizza and it's not the bready, flat round pizza. Â It's quite dry and lacking a lot of flavor. Â I'm sure that they are trying to be more healthy, but it doesn't translate into good pizza in my opinion. Â The restaurant presents several options of pizza or you can make your own. Â They have vegan pizza, whole wheat crust, fresh toppings which make it healthier and I think that's great. Â However, I believe salt and olive oil would drastically improve the flavor. Â In fact, one time Jeffrey B. and I added a lot of salt and pepper to our pizza and it was much better.
I think the drinks are good but somewhat expensive. Â They are about $8 for a martini, which seems reasonably at a martini bar, but not here. Â The beer was over $4 for a bottle. Â Amici's has a large selection of unique beer and a great list of martinis. Â There are several different microbrews available including a gluten-free beer. Â I'm impressed they had even Unibroue beers (Fin du Monde, Maudite, Trois Pistoles). Â I could hang out here more as a lounge type place if it wasn't so chaotic.
As I said, there is nothing horrible about Amici's Living Room, however, it's not my ideal dining experience.
Great pizza, very tasty. Although I have to say, as good as it does taste its missing something...in my opinion, it falls into the "so healthy it sacrifices taste" category.
The whole wheat bread sticks are really sort of like eating a mushy piece of cardboard, so save room for the pizza, you're better off that way. The pizza is great and the Martini's are really phenomenal. They have a nice variety of fresh and unique pizza toppings that are well paired into great pizza options, sort of gourmet pizza style.
The atmosphere really lends to the experience. The patio out back is so beautiful in the warmer months. It's a great place to meet up with friends for some tasty pizza and a drink before going out. Try it, you'll like it.
I am By No Means a vegetarian. I'll admit it, I'm guilty of telling my friends vegetarian jokes when we are on our yearly gathering, involving a bit of gluttony and yes, plenty of meat.
But I'll tell you what: Unless someone else is doing the ordering, I'll never order meat here. I don't need to - their red pepper pizza is so good that chunks of pork or beef or whatever just plain isn't necessary. The sweetness of the peppers connects with the saltiness of the cheese and the tang of the sauce so perfectly that I just don't need anything more.
Their other pizzas are good too, but for my money I'll go for the divine red pepper pizza every single time.
The beer list is good, the martini list is great. The bartenders are usually hot, whatever your persuasion, and it's never too crowded - it's a very cozy atmosphere. Truthfully I can't think of a better place to spend part of an evening.
The owners are a cool pair of smart, fun ladies who know how to run an establishment. They deserve your patronage.
Certainly I can't question their savvy, though I might question their taste, as they allowed a pretty large painting of myself to hang in there for over a month. I'm not sure how that went without complaint.
Regardless! It's a great little place and everybody should stop in at least once and check it out. They also deliver, and I think they've since fired all the kids who'd come to work high, so you don't have to worry about the integrity of your food while in-transit. Good times!
I moved away just over a year and miss this place so much. Â Eating in the back garden is like being transported out of Berkley to Napa or something to that extreme, green surrounds and wonderful eclectic art.
The drink list is nicely appointed with creative martinis, nice microbrew selections and good priced wines. Â The bar staff and waiters are all kind and attractive, a really nice and friendly ambiance imbues the place with a great neighborhood feeling.
Special mention to the Spinach Salad. Â This salad is maybe the best spinach salad I've ever had. The dressing is what does it, I think it is creamy garlic Parmesan or something of the sort.
Finally, the pizza is my favorite in Detroit. Â You have the option of white or wheat crust, I go with the white. Â The wheat ain't bad at all, but the white just works so much better. Â Sauce is garlicy and chunky. Toppings are creative and delectable. Â Cheese is ample and comes in many varieties.
My favorites are the Red Pepper and the Jamaican Jerk pizzas, but I have seriously tried them all and have always been overly satisfied.
Do yourself a favor and go experience Amici's.
I went to Amici's tonight with two foodie colleagues at the recommendation of a dear friend who lives in Berkley. Considering that earlier we had received a recommendation for TGI Fridays (sorry Fridays - but really, TGI Fridays?) we were thrilled to come upon Amici's.
We started with martinis (I had the Blueberry Lemonade - yum!), moved on to salad (amazing dressing!) and ended with two pizzas - one with gluten free crust which made me very happy!
The service at Amici's was great and the food was amazing. We sat on the patio which is darling, and as it got dark some cute lights turned on to make the ambiance nice.
Although I don't visit Michigan often - I will surely seek out Amici's when the opportunity presents itself again!
I actually really like this place but it is kind of a tossup of what the evening will be like. I've never had a problem with the food. The bread-sticks are great and not greasy. There are tons of veggie options for the pizza, which is nice. Even when I'm with a group of people, we can always customize our pizza perfectly for our tastes. When the food comes, it is hot and tasty.
What has me coming back are the martinis. Soooo good (I enjoy the Grasshopper). They also have great seating in the back, small but charming.
So the problem becomes the service. Sure, they are always friendly, but are they always there? Sometimes I don't know. Once your food and drinks are ready, you will get them right away, but waiting for the menus, to be seated, or to order can be an all night affair. The place has always been busy when I've visited (usually a Thursday or Friday evening), and the waitstaff seems a little disorganized.
So if I have hours to spare, I'm there! If you're looking for a quick bite, look elsewhere.
Whole wheat crust pizza - surprisingly delicious! Â We also liked the whole wheat bread sticks they bring you as your pizza appetizer. Â I was impressed by the two pages of their menu dedicated to martini's. Â This particular evening however I tried a Bell's Oberon draft and it was quite good with the pizza. Â
We had the roasted red pepper pizza with whole wheat crust and also topped it with ham, sausage, and banana peppers. Â The crust as I mentioned before was excellent, the toppings fresh, and there was also a tasty fresh Feta cheese that had a nice kick to it. Â Very good pizza!
I wish I knew of this place earlier, I would love to enjoy drinks on their outdoor patio. Â It looks quite nice out there. Â I'll be back!!
I was also told about the $3 pints and $5 cosmos on Wednesday nights. Â Sneak out of work early if you're going to come that evening, this place probably seats only about 40-50 people indoors if that.
Amici's is great little restaurant - visit their web site to see their full menu. http://www.amicispizza.c…
A local Berkleyite, it's my favorite spot in the area. Everyone has mentioned the pizza and they're right. Creative, fresh and made with high-quality ingredients, I haven't found a better pizza in the area. I prefer the asparagus pizza. I can't believe no one has mentioned the sauce! Homemade and delicious, get an order of breadsticks to really enjoy it.
For nightlife, I prefer it to any Berkley bar, most Royal Oak and Ferndale ones, for that matter. It's not as lively, but has seen a spike in activity lately. Unless you go well-before 7 or later in the evening, don't expect to get a table in the delightful patio without a wait.
Good martini and beer selection. Guys, don't feel too macho to order a foo-foo drink. Have 3 and you better have a DD. In short, its a casual atmosphere, great place to bring a date, grab a table with a group of friends or just enjoy the summer's evening.
