Upscale but comfortable and really nice food! Â Great service and excellent menu. Â Wonderful bread and oil. Â We enjoyed the tuna tartar, buffalo mozzarella app, lobster ravioli and the La Cotoletta Capricciosa (
breaded veal cutlet topped with arugola, tomatoes and fresh mozzarella). Â We enjoyed a bottle of wine with it.
Move over Morello's, we have a new favorite Italian restaurant. The fresh homemade pasta here is amazing. Linguine vongole had the smaller more fragrant clams in their shells, tasty white sauce. Lobster and crab ravioli was divine in a creamy red sauce. Much more low key than Morello and I dare say the food is better! Nice wine list, not overwhelming.
Review Source:We came in for Saturday night dinner on my wife's birthday, after a wonderful day at Old Greenwich beach. So expectations were high, and it being Saturday, i was a bit nervous. No need to worry. You should go eat here - go - now.
The space is warm and comfy and I was quietly assured they had birthday covered. The staff was friendly and very efficient on this busy night.
The bread was warm and fresh, and we kicked off dinner with a pair of terrific appetizers. My wife had the special pasta (appetizer sized) with a terrific pesto, while I scarfed down the ahi tuna carpaacio. Mmmm.
Our wine choice was a medium bodied red from the owners home provine of Puglia, a perfect accompaniment to my perfectly done al dente pasta with shrimp, capers and parmesano. My wife loved the thin and tender veal with eggplant and mozzarella. The wine list was a bit pricey (about 2.5x retail), but had good depth and geographic range.
The birthday Tiramisu and candle was accompanied by a reaonably in tune rendition delivered by the whole staff!
Overall a very nice spot, Â and left us wishing it was less than an hour away!
Applausi is a little place with charm and a small town feel. If you are looking for New York go to New York. What this place has to offer is much closer to what I have experienced in Florence or Sienna. The service is personal and attentive and the food is created for you nightly as well which explains some minor variations. The bread brought to your table is fresh and warm. The stuffed red pepper appetizer I had was vibrant yet subtle and was an appetizer as it should be, leaving me wanting more not feeling full and regretful. My dinner of spaghetti Alla San Giovanni was sublime. The sun dried tomatoes and shrimp added layers of flavor that were just ever so savory and delightful and the perfect compliment to the capers sprinkled throughout the noodles. The penne with italian sausage was done to perfection.
The restaurant was clean, and every table was full. I suggest reservations. Free parking.
I love the homemade pastas but I think the same dish can be different night to night... not sure if that is the difference in the chef but I always got the parpadelle with truffle and speck and one night it was great, and one night, way too much pasta in proportion to the other ingrediants.
But, a solid nice neighborhood place that we will go to regularly.
These are the same owners of Columbus Park in Stamford and a few others that I have not been to. Â I like Applausi- it has a nice cozy atmosphere. Â The food is good and so is the service. Â We had the L'Involtino di Bresaola (Thin slices of air cured beef rolled with fresh mozzarella, served over a bed of arucola, Mushrooms, and finished with White truffle oil) and the shrimp special for an app. and the salmon for dinner. Â All were great.
Review Source:Great Italian cuisine in the center of Old Greenwich. Â The formal ambience adds to the feel of the restaurant. Â However, the food seems sub-par to restaurants of its caliber in the area, which is why I was forced to give it a 4. Â The restaurant is terrific otherwise; as long as you don't mind a slight dip in food quality.
