I love Arooga's. I've never ordered anything (food) that I didn't like. The drinks are good. The service is pretty good; and they show all the big sporting events, Â INCLUDING UFC fights. If there is a fight, it can get pretty crowded; otherwise, Â it's quiet and you don't have to wait forever (you don't have to wait at all) to be seated.
Review Source:My husband and I went yesterday for an early dinner/late lunch. Â What a mistake. Â We sat down and waited about 10 minutes to be approached for a drink order. Â We were then approached by two more servers within five minutes....could go either way. Â It turned out to be a bad sign. Â The place wasn't nearly full and it took 10 more minutes to get two bottled beers. Â We placed our food order; 10 wings, nachos and a salad. Â Now, we waited 30 more minutes for our food and it all came out at the same time.
The service was awful, the food was just ok. Â The wings were good, but the salad was ALL lettuce (maybe 2 ounces of chicken and a couple of tomatoes) and the nachos were nothing to write home about. Â Mostly they were pre-packaged ingredients.
We won't be going back any time soon.
I don't typically go for the "Cookie Cutter" Sports Bars but I've got a soft spot for Arooga's. Their Beer & Liquor selection is fantastic, a great mix of Craft and 'Big' Beers. Their food is good, it isn't anything new or exciting, just your typical pup fare at reasonable prices. The atmosphere of the restaurant is what will bring me back. It's just a cool, fun place to hang out and watch a game. What can I say... I'm a fan.
Review Source:I'll start by saying I do like Arooga's, however it is not my first choice if I am looking to get wings. I mention the wings, because that seems to be what they are known for. While their wings(traditional & boneless) are perfectly fine, there is a certain chain restaurant in the area who's sauces I like a little better. I've had other food here as well, and I have yet to be disappointed.
I've only ever been on the bar side, but the service has been friendly and the food good. They have good happy hour specials on domestic beer and on Monday's they do all you can eat wings and fries for about $12. I think they have great fries here. The beer selection is not too bad either, as they usually have a few smaller microbrews on tap. They also have quite a few TV's so that you don't miss your game. They DO NOT allow smoking here which is also nice. This is definitely a place I will return to.
After 3 months of being open, I finally get out to the infamous Arooga's. I have heard great things about Arooga's, but have also read some bad things too. You know what, though? I had to check it out myself.
We had a large party of 8, which was nothing compared to the 16-top, and the 10-top that had apparently already been there. This forced us to eat in the bar area. This definatly wasn't my first choice, but, it wasn't horrible. Let me tell you though, if you are reading the reviews, someone mention the abnoxioius amount of TV's. He is right, just to many TV's. It is unnecessary. The ad on the table stated that from anywhere in the restaurant, you could view all the TV's. They weren't kidding, but let me tell you, its not a good thing.
As we waited for everyone to arrive we ordered drinks and viewed the menu. There was a ton of information in the menu. I was overwhelmed. So, we finally did order. A bunch of appetizers, and I got the wings (kangaroo-something or other), and some kind of blues chips. First, the appetizers come out, and there was much hype about the crab pretzel. Â PHENOMENAL! It was everything I expected it to be. Seafood Nacho's were good...
OH, forgot to mention, got a lager, during happy hour. $2.00 Not bad!
So, the entree...wings, you know that kangaroo flavor. The wings were very good. Only downfall was that by the time they got to me, I was basically filled up on the apps that came earlier. Then there were the chips, not as good as I wanted them to be. I won't be ordering those again.
Atmosphere was annoyingly loud. I guess that was to be expected considering the number of TV's and such.
Service was good.. Our server seemed busy and rushed, but she was very accomodating. We even sent back a margarita, which she replaced. She gets a A for effort.
Arooga's was just okay. If anything I would just come back for the crab pretzels, and the several different flavor wings, which I feel like I have to try.
Yet another dumpy sports bar chain restaurant that doesn't get it.
1 1/3rds stars
Food ordered -
Fried Pickles        ..........terrible
Long Bomb Burger   ..........good
Fries               ..........poor
Rogue Dead Guy Ale..........excellent, however see note below
French Dip          ..........fair
Coleslaw           ...........phenomenally disgusting
Pros:
-Menu seems to have a good variety of options
-They carry a couple good craft selections
-Sandwich buns are pretty good
Cons:
-Sadly aprrox 50% of the draft beers and 66% of the bottled beers are garbage BMC. Kind of embarrassing.
-My beer was brought out without a glass. Craft should always be served w/ a glass or at least ask me if I want one.
-When I received a glass it was all wet..another no no.
-Fried pickles were overcooked and the breading would fall all off as soon as you touched them
-Fries were soggy and unsalted
-Salt shakers are an adjustable grinder type permanently set to the Broken setting
-Coleslaw was just some hard dry cabbage in a cup..?? I don't get it. Worst ever.
-Portion sizes are small
-Staff does not seem to be very well trained at all. I blame management.
-Cheesy waitress uniforms
-There is an annoying number of TVs in this place. I would rather have about 30 less TVs if it meant better service and/or food
-Decor is cheap
-Parking lot is hilly
Update 05/28
Onion Rings are just like the fried pickles.. tiny portion, fried in old oil, breading falls off - terrible
Kangarooga Quesidilla - just really bland
Oskar Blues Deviant Dales on tap - good beer but $6.50?! Hahaha yeah right. I'm officially done with this place.
Update
Gee thanks yelp for filtering out my review. So glad I wasted the time giving an honest critique. I'll be sure to fill my next one w/ parades and confetti and juice boxes and LIES. This is me being factious, in case you couldn't figure that out either.
This was the first time I ever been to Aroogas and won't be the last. They had Troegs Nugget Nectar on tap and an awesome menu that would satisfy the pickiest eaters. The place was jumping with over 100 flat panels and bumpen music on the bar side. I had some wings , carribean jerk and buffalo blue, they were cooked to perfection. The service was on point and very friendly. I also had some ghost face killer shrimp , Shew made with ghost chilies , damn the hottest thing on the planet. I think this place is gonna do great in York, there was plenty of parking and the prices were very reasonable. A fun night out for sure!
Review Source:I wasn't impressed at all with my first visit here. We sat on the bar side at a tall table which I did like allot. I like the taller tables, they work better for me and are more comfortable. The waitress did take our drink orders soon after we were seated but it took 15 to 20 minutes to actually get our drinks, strike 1. I was trying to figure out why it was taking so long to get our drinks because we were sitting basically right in front of the bar and it wasn't really all that busy. I took notice that the bar tender/beer pourer was way more interested in flirting with a dude sitting at the bar and putting on lip stick than actually pouring anyones beers. They did have a very nice tap selection there, however almost half of them were still corporate beers. I have to laugh when I see that and especially when someone (sitting behind us) asks for the beer list and then still orders a Coors Light? We were there on Saturday 2/25/12 for lunch so we put in for a appetizer, I believe it was the crab pretzel. And then ordered our sandwiches for lunch. They have it set up that another person brings the meal out for the waitress and they missed our appetizer all together. So that was pretty much strike 2 for us and strike 3 was the food wasn't all that good. I had the Pittsburger which is a egg over easy on top of a bacon cheeseburger. Well what they brought me was a broken yoke egg fried hard on a over cooked bacon cheeseburger.
Here is the thing, and please take note Aroogas. if your going to have a extensive tap list don't have 50% of them be corporate beer. And have staff that knows what beers are so they can help your patrons make beer decision that go well with the food. I was having a hard time understanding why they had such a extensive tap system but they were not pouring many beers. I was shocked at that because every tap room we've ever been at that has a extensive tap system in it you always see a pint being filled. Thats the point of having all those taps. And please cut your menu down a few pages. There is no reason to have that large of a menu in a "sports bar". It is way better to coot and serve 10 different meals that taste fantastic than serve 30 that are just ok. Take it from a fat guy that loves to eat, cook, and drink beer....I know what I'm talking about.
I'll give them a few weeks to get there heads out of there a$$es before we try it again. i hope it will be better results the next time.
