I live in the neighborhood, and I went to the Aussie Pub last night for a couple of drinks. Â It is what it is: a dive. Â And, it's the kind of dive that I like: a real dive, not one of those hipster-filled trendy dives. Â This is what I call "an old man bar." Â It's the kind of place where you go for cheap booze and maybe someone interesting to chat with. Â They had $2 wells and $2 domestic drafts. Â There were a couple of regulars there at the bar while I was there. Â I have no idea how long one of the fellows was there, but it must have been a while. Â He was drunk, but not obnoxious. Â It was an OK experience, and was exactly what I'm looking for when I just want to knock back a couple.
My one complaint: it's called The Aussie Pub, but I didn't see any Australian beers on tap. Â I think they should get Foster's on tap at least. Â But, they have Anheuser-Busch products on tap, so I just drank Bud. Â Because that's what you do in a dive: you drink cheap booze until you've had your fill and then you go home.
This is one of the most divey bars that I have seen in the Denver area. Â But then I might not be hanging out in the right places to experience that many dive bars.
The waitress/bartender was very helpful with the menu and took time to explain how she made everything. Â As my husband would say she was too chatty and just bring me my food. Â :)
They were out of the meat pies but the sausage roll was very good. Â I had also ordered the chicken sandwich and I have to say that it wasn't anything special but it was descent.
I went using a Groupon. Â Basically, this place is a "dive bar". Â However, the food is cheap and tasty. Â I enjoyed both the sausage roll and the pub burger. They were out of meat pies, which I would have liked to try. It is a limited menu, but the sign says they serve food until 2AM, which is nice.
Review Source:Cant give a great review all though I must start out with that they had a groupon coupon and where over whelmed. Having lived in australia the sausage roll was a 4 out of 10 and the chicken pie about the same. Both where burned. I will try to go back and get a regular meat pie (they ran out) and not giving up yet but not a great start.
Review Source:Aussie Pub is my new hang-out because it's really close to me.
The space used to be occupied by Tonda's - Englewood's very own hellhole of a bar. Â Tonda's was as popular at 9am as it was at 9pm. Â Beer was only in bottles and the TV actually had a wire hanger for an antenna. Â We're talking awful.
Aussie Pub is a huge, huge improvement. Â It's very clean and the owners added beer taps - Bud, Bud Light and, yes, Fosters. Â The kitchen is minimal but it turns out some decent grub - Aussie style meat pies (the crust is never quite right), yummy panini sandwiches and surprisingly good burgers and fries (both prepared in a convection oven). Â
The folks there are very nice and they take good care of me. Â The problem with the Pub is the clientele. Â They can't really afford to chase off the drunks and they haven't yet attracted the middle class crowd. Â As a result it's less a Pub and more a bar. Â
I have an uneasy feeling about the Aussie Pub. Â I am hopeful that it will have staying power but I am not convinced.
I Added a star on April 15 because the Pub keeps getting better as it gets its' rhythm.
UPDATE: Â The Aussie has gone completely into the crapper. Â What a shithole! Â The woman who managed to keep me coming back was canned. Â In the meanwhile, the owners have turned it over to a couple of clueless girls who have no idea what they are doing. Â Avoid!
UPDATE: Â I visited the Aussie with a friend on a Monday night to catch the football game. Â When we got there it wasn't on TV. Â We asked the bartender to put it on and she did but when we asked for audio she said "no". Â She didn't ask the other patrons (any of the 4 of them) and she acted like we were bothering her. Â We headed down the street to the Full House where they gladly honored our request - even though they had a bunch of customers.
