While I have dined here many times, the experience is never consistent UNLESS my favorite server, Miguel, is there. Â He is the only one who has served me that knows how to bring water to the table without you having to request it and makes sure that your food arrives on the table correctly. Â I have actually walked out of the restaurant and gone somewhere else if Miguel was not there. Â Most of the food that I order is fine (Portofino Chicken Salad and Pot Roast dinner are very good) but my BIGGEST complaint is this places inability to make sure they have enough Caramel Pecan Silk Supreme pies available. Â They run out of it almost every Free Pie Wednesday and if you just happen to stop by to purchase one FORGET IT! Â Here is a clue ... if you have a highly requested pie on the menu HAVE MORE OF IT ON HAND THAN THE CRAP THAT ISN'T SELLING!!!!!!!! Â I for the life of me can't figure out why their management can't get this simple concept correct. Â Quickly getting bored with this location.
Review Source:Having grown up in a small Midwest town, I spent quite a bit of my teenage years at Bakers Square. Â It's where we hung out for hours after high school football games or when we all returned home from college. Â I hadn't been to Bakers Square since the late-90s, but accidentally stumbled upon this one tucked on the outskirts of the city of Chicago. Â I was thrilled.
I had the Thanksgiving Turkey meal (turkey, stuffing, cranberries, and gravy) and couldn't believe that it tasted like it was actually cooked that day and not some frozen turkey product trucked in from the Bakers Square Kitchens in some distant Arkansas warehouse. Â The waiter must have heard me because he remarked that The Square (can I call it "The Square"?) cooks their turkey in house every day. Â I was impressed. Â My ladyfriend is a fan of the Chicken Pita Pocket. Â Much like me, she said that it was what she always ordered when she went to The Square in high school. Â We both decided that we need to spend more time at this place.
You'd be a total fool to not order a slice of pie. Â You'd be even more foolish to not go on a Wednesday when it's Pie Rush Wednesday (FREE pie with any dinner purchase. Â Read that again, Buckaroo. Â I said FREE PIE!). Â Don't be one of those who flip through all these pictures of delicious pie on their menu and then order a slice of apple pie. Â Yawn. Â Grab yourself a slice of the Peanut Butter Cup Pie. Â
When you go back to your old college campus, you're reminded that you're not 19. Â When you go back to Bakers Square, you're reminded that pie is dang delicious at any age.
Orded the patty melt and slice of apple pie.
The patty melt was good. Â The bread was nice and patty was nice and big. I ordered a side of fries, but gave me coleslaw instead. Â Instead of taking away the slaw and bringing out the fries, he left the slaw and got me a fresh order of fries. AWESOME! I loved the customer service. This was my main reason for giving out 5 stars.
Even though I was pretty full after the patty melt, fries, AND coleslaw... I heard people rave about the pies so I had to try it. I ordered a slice of the apple pie. In a word... eh. Nothing special. It was okay, but nothing special. Â Maybe it was that pie. Maybe it was the apple pie (I should have gone with the pecan) Maybe it was something else. Who knows. Maybe when I go back the pecan/cherry pie or other pies will be better.
All in all, I would definately go back again when I can and highly recommend. The staff was friendly and the customer service was great. Just don't go in expecting the world's best apple pie.
OK I will keep this simple.

The
Pies
Cheap-Yummy-Pie, open until 11pm on a weekday!!
***These pies are NOT made on premises, but are frozen & trucked in.
If you are a pie purist, use yelp to find a real bakery, & plan earlier in the day.
Take the pie to go. Â People who say the interior is drab and dated and that the food is sub-par, all I can say is what did you expect? Â It's a Baker's Square!!!! Â The 5 stars is for the French Silk pie that we began eating last night, in the comfort of our own home. Â (like chocolate mousse w/whipped cream) Â I loved it, and will continue to enjoy it for a few more days. Â It was only $11.95 for the whole pie, as it is $2 off pies on Wednesdays. Â Dangerous info, I know. Â Next time we go my husband gets to choose, and his favorite is a cheesecake w/lemon cool stuff on top. Â I will update w/the name eventually. Â He also likes the Pecan Pie. Â This location has it's own parking lot.
Not sure what happened today! Although the food was okay, the service was terrible. We were a large group but the waitress didn't disguise her disagreement. It was three adults and 5 children. There weren't enough children's menus so only two children were able to draw and color and the other three children just sat there and watched. The waitress was not attentive at all and could care less if we needed something. On the other hand the food was okay, delicious club pita with seasoned fries but my son's corn dog bites were way too greasy and overcooked! Â The children's chicken strips with fries were a big hit and yes you can opt for fresh fruit or vegetables. I was a bit disappointed because before walking out I purchased a Fruit Gallete that was claimed to be done by the manager that day, but when I opened the box the next day for dessert there was a big green moldy strawberry right in the center. Definitely not going there again!
Review Source:My husband and I like to come here after a hard day and treat ourselves to pie for dinner. You could go to a more "hip" or fancy bakery, but Baker's Square serves some of the best icebox pie I've ever eaten, and my husband, who is an apple pie connoisseur, loves the country apple pie. Strangely, or maybe not strangely, the service here is some of the best we've gotten anywhere in Chicago. The waitstaff looks happy to be there, which means it must be a pretty well managed place. We always feel welcome and enjoy our food. When my husband fought me about going to the ER when he had a nasty spider bite, I said we could swing by on the way back and get him a big slice of whatever kind of pie he wanted as a reward. It made the whole thing a much more pleasant experience.
Review Source:I had not been here in a long time. I admit, I was a bit sad when Bakers Square had taken a few of my faves off the menu. First, it was the demise of the cauliflower o'gratin soup. Then the veggie sandwich. Then I really liked this eggplant parmesan sandwich thing. All gone. Boo hoo.
However, my recent trip proved more exciting and helped restore my faith a bit. First, HOLY MAKEOVER, BATMAN! Our recent condo meeting was here, and the moment I walked in, I noticed -this location underwent an extreme makeover. It looks so modern and cute. Very warm, inviting color scheme. Kind of like Panera, but actually cooler and a bit more funky and classic. Second, they added a butternut squash bisque...yummy! I also tried the veggie fajita pita -which actually has been on the menu for a long time. My mom used to always order it. I never really appreciated it until now. Both were quite good!
I would like to give a shout out to my waiter, but the receipt only shows "cashier". He was a younger man (in his twenties?) with the cool hair style -he had long cornrows. He did a great job of serving me quietly while the condo meeting was in effect.
I really enjoyed my experience. Now that I have a few new favorites, I will be sure to return more often, as this location is such a convenient place to go -down the street and right near my gym!
Kudos, Rogers Park Bakers Square for your new look and "newish" menu update!
I have not been to a Bakers Square in years. I had tired of the dated interiors and the limited menu. Last week, I saw an advertisement for them that included a coupon for 15% off the total bill. The ad showed new menu items that intrigued me, so we broke down and headed there for lunch the other day.
The place had definately been updated since our last visit. The service was friendly and attentive and the food was actually quite good. I had the Cuban flatbread sandwich, accompanied by the strawberry summer salad and a slice of the harvest berry galette. Everything was fresh, well presented and very tasty. Admittedly the Cuban sandwich was not traditional, but it was still quite flavorful. I would certainly order it again.
Christopher had a grilled pita sandwich with ham and honey mustard. I did not taste it, but he enjoyed it and also liked the cole slaw he got on the side.
I agree that it is a tad pricey, but that's what coupons are for!!! Overall, I would say our total experience was about 3 1/2 stars, but I opted to bump it up to 4 because we were both so pleasantly surprised at the positive changes both in food and decor since our last visit.
Today I had lunch with my 2 friends Dawn and Alpana
and we decided on Bakers Square for lunch.
Now, I will admit I have'nt been to Bakers Square in many
years, I really try to avoid anything with the words bakers
or pies but today I said what the hell and gave in to
one of my forbidden temptations...
Back in the 70's this place used to go by a different name
which was.. drum roll please.. poppin fresh pies!
Upon entering we were greeted by a nice hostess person
who took us to our table promptly, and I really tried to avoid
direct eye contact with that case full of pies that hit me right
in the face as I entered..:(
For me, a great choice, we all started off with a teriffic Tomato
Basil Soup which came with either cornbread or foccacia..
I like this word "foccacia", spellings kindda tricky though, even
for me and I've won a few spelling bee's..:)
We all had pita sandwiches which were really quite good, and
I'm not a french fry type of person but these today were really
very good!
And boy, did we come on the right day because Wednesday is
free piece of pie day, and thats pretty much any piece/flavor you
may want other than the carrot cake(yuck!) and I think one other exclusion.
So, 2 of us had this really delicious Strawberry Creamy Goodness
type of pie and 1 of us opted for Banana Cream.
We had a nice server by the name of Maria, she was a pretty attentive
server  for the most part, I think a few times we looked for her
and she was M.I.A. but she seemed to be busy.
But, I did a double take when our check came and it read $62.00
for the 3 of us..
But, at the register they deducted $12,00 off our bill for the
pies since it was free piece of pie Wednesday so that was a little
better at least..
So, this was a very nice lunch at Bakers Square.
So glad Alpana told us about the tomato basil soup, this one
has turned into a new favorite of mine.
And free pie sure did'nt hurt!
And I left without bringing anything home from the case with all
that whipped cream goodness..
Hey, my birthday is coming, maybe a Birthday Pie this year..:)
The service 'had been good' about eight to ten years ago. Yet, it became consistently sloooooooooow as molasses. I was in denial. I tried at least an additional four times before giving up. Â It got to the point where you had to practically beg for service.
Table items requested (e.g. fork, napkin, catchup, coffee), eventually were removed from other tables due to server neglect. Â A second request was greeted with, okay, I'll take care of it. Â Unfortunately, it was not! However, I will say that it has been a while since my return (3 years?).
I finally complained to corporate on my last visit, which brought a return voice mail 'several months later' with an apology for being late to return the call. This brought a follow up voice mail from me, which brought silence from B-Square brass. I was factual and reasonable with my complaint about the last server. The lack of follow up was a disappointment. Â Management, if you read this, then contact me.
I probably can return and document my next visit with factual, yet reasonable concerns, if any. Â The food was not the issue.
If I ever return (I lost track of how long its been), which may be to try items on a new menu, then I will put an iPhone stopwatch to the server and report back. I sincerely hope that service improves, because the food is good when served on time. I wonder whether management played a role. Â Service at P&S Cafe next door was much much better!
One recent good note: The broken restaurant sign was recently replaced, so I notice.
10: minutes our party of 6 had to wait to even be greeted by anybody and seated. Â Poor.
3: number of times I thought "this table is sticky".
4.1: seconds it took me to decide I wanted french silk pie.
2: number of us who thought "how long does it take to cut a few slices of pie?"
Short handed: what they apparently were on this Sat. night.
The pie's pretty mediocre, the service slow, and the establishment lacking cleanliness. Â The experience left me wondering where's my mama, Hoosie Mama?
the commercial says "COME FOR THE FOOD, STAY FOR THE PIE"
hmmmm how about "don't eat the food.....just eat the pie"
That's really all this place is good for. Â The pie. Â I have always tried to enjoy my food but it always tasted like crap. Â Rubbery meat, cold fries....just not good! Â Usually creepy looking customers too!
Pie and Coffee anyone?? Â I'll never say NO to their pie though!!!
I'm not sure I've ever given a one star review here, and in the past I wasn't sure anything short of food borne illness could merit the indignity of one star. Â I guess I can say one thing for this Bakers Square--it's never given me food poisoning. Â As far as I know.
Yeah, this place looks it hasn't seen an update or a good thorough cleaning since 1993. Â And the service is spotty.
The food though. Â Buy a budget gourmet dinner and stay home.
Whenever I see my friend from Rogers Park, we usually end up at Baker Square. I grew up going to the one in Skokie and even though the food is just OK, I really like going there. Service is quick and the waitresses are really nice. The last thing I ordered was the roast turkey with veggies and baked potato- just like Thanksgiving! haha. My friend got the bacon burger which he really liked. Of course we had to get pie and I got the brownie a la mode while he chose the apple. Both were really good because they were warmed up, yummy.
Review Source:I've been coming here for years, and will continue to. The place has always had a comforting familiar feeling, so I always associate my times here with some fond family memories, especially brunch with my dad. Just because it's 11am doesn't mean you can't finish with pie.
I love the skillets, the grown up grilled cheese (though I feel ridiculous ordering it by name, it makes me feel like a kid trying to seem sophisticated by ordering something 'fancy'), and even the fries all on their own... shortly followed by strawberry rhubarb or french silk pie.
WEDNESDAY IS PIE DAY! Â I am giving this place 5 stars only for the FREE PIE Wednesday. Yes the atmosphere is drab, yes the service is hit or miss (FOR A GOOD TIME ask for Joe or Gloria), the music is dull, the food is so-so. However, for coffee and a piece of free pie, you can't beat it on a Wednesday night after 8:30. Organize a group outing for free pie and beverages, and a memorable "happening" will magically occur. Â This is a great place to people watch. Â I have been coming here for almost 2 months now, every Wednesday, with different folks, and they love it. Â We typically eat dinner somewhere else, or dine at home, and then "Meet for Pie" around 8:30/9. Â We have a blast! The managers are very fun, Joe and Gloria are great, just debating which pie to try can be amusing. Â My license plate reads I LIKE PI and one of the managers, Martin, gave me an entire pie for free! It is not the cleanest prettiest place on Earth, but the friends, staff, and free pie make it worth the trip. Â PS - If I do dine there, they have 2 great things: 1) the chicken pot pie is homemade and has top and bottom crusts, in otherwords versatile, Â 2) the adult grilled cheese with tomotatos and bacon or ham
Review Source:This is one of the nastier restaurants I've been to in a while. Â Nasty!
The interior is drab and dated, with wood-paneled walls and eerie elevator music playing.
The food: Â I was trying to decide what was safe to order, so I ordered a Cesar Salad. Â It would have been more accurately listed as "Lettuce in a Bowl" because that's what it was. Â I've had Cesar Salads with croutons, tomatoes, black olives, onions, even sliced hard boiled eggs. Â I was not expecting all that, but c'mon, at least throw some croutons on it. Â But no, it was just plain romaine lettuce with some dressing on it. Â $7?
My friend had the Mediterranian Pita Wrap, it's grilled chicken in a pita with some onions, cucumbers and sauce on it. Â He is NOT one to complain, he usually eats anything, but he said his food was nasty and tasted like vomit. Â He ordered the fruit cup instead of fries, but he did not eat it, so I tried it, it was tasteless and hard, like they had only used the rinds of the melon. Â I think you'd find a better "fruit salad" in a nursing home or air plane dinner.
The pie: Â I didn't want any. Â But it looks good while it's sitting on the shelves defrosting. Â They come in frozen from the factory where it's made. Â Baker's Square is not a bakery, and you can tell when you compare their pies.
Go to the restaurant across the street, or even a McDonalds, at least the food there is consistent and cheaper.
I have never been to a Bakers Square before, so I didn't know what to expect. When we walked in we were greeted warmly and seated immediately. I found the atmosphere inviting and the men's restroom was clean.
The blackberry lemonade was very yummy. I had a hamburger with fries and my wife had the soup, salad and pie combo. She chose the tomato basil soup and French silk pie, both were very good, but not fantastic. My wife wanted her salad to arrive before the rest of the meal, I guess we should have specified that she wanted the salad immediately, though we shouldn't have to ask.
That evening, my wife had some stomach troubles, but it could have been the rich food, and the fact that she doesn't have a gall bladder anymore. She is still finding out what she can and can't eat.
Overall, she tells me it was worth the stomach ache.
It has been years since I have been to a Bakers Square until recently. Now I know why I have not been to one in so long. We went there late in the afternoon on a Sunday and the place was busy.
Our waiter may have have been fairly new. He was really friendly but he just did not do a very good job. He brought my soup out with my entree and Lara had to ask him three times for a glass of water. Then finally he almost forgot about our check.
I ordered a limited time only pasta combo, where I ordered soup, ultimate mac-n-cheese, and a slice of Oreo pie for something like $9.75. I was completely underwhelmed. The soup was OK, the mac-n-cheese was underwhelming, the garlic toast was very good and the pie was a disappointment. It was broken and looked a fraction of the size that it does in the pictures on the table. I don't expect the actual item ordered to look exactly like a display picture, but this was incredibly off. It was extremely close to the false advertising rule, that is how not even close it was. Needless to say , the portions were so huge that I was hungry again in about three hours. :-(
We had a 20% off coupon and out bill came out to $30! I will sometimes go to average places if K have a coupon to get a good deal. Â This place was so not worth it even with a coupon. This is most likely going to be my last visit ever to a Baker's Square.
I'd like to piggy back on Jenn Q's review as I am the Sarah-Jayne she mentions. What's not to like about Baker's Square?? The food if good and relatively cheap. Definately better than Golden Nugget or IHOP. Mel the GM was so friendly and even gave us free pie because we were waiting for a while for our server to stop by. Admittedly service can be slow here but if you're not in a mad rush it aint no big thing. The breakfasts are good and I love the pie!!! Long live Baker's Square!
Review Source:I frequent Baker's square all over the Chicago-land area. Â I have a mild addiction to the Chicken ceasar pita. Â My Favorite is the one in Wilmette, but this one can sometimes be more conveniant. Â
Although I love the place and their pie I give this particular Square three stars because 1. They do NOT have the delicious Tomato Basil soup that the one in Wilmette has and 2. The service can reall suck here. Â It is hit or miss in terms of service. Â Sometimes you get the really nice old lady and sometimes you get the one that never EVER comes to your table to take your order, and mysteriously disappears for long periods of time.
Nuff said.
This is just your typical Baker's Square....casual diner that serves breakfast all day....however, they do have very tasty pies.
I've been here 3 or 4 times and I've always been seated right away. Service is okay....though just about every time I've been here my actual server is kind of slow, but someone else comes and picks up the slack.
Last time I was here with a kid, the manager on duty was great. He came by and talked to us and asked how we were doing. He asked if we needed anything else...and we got some free extra pickles....yummy! Anyway, he was very pleasant and bumps the rating up one star.
