I was iffy about this place on first recommendation but Bases Loaded surpassed all expectations I had. I came for the Monte Christo, which was great. Better than the Madonna Inn & oddly enough it's deep fried in Beer Batter instead of the traditional egg wash.
I also got to sample some yummy Tri-Tip & Pulled Pork. This meat is smoked to perfection, very sweet tasting. I was really pleased with this because it's hard to find some good BBQ in the area.
The restaurant was nice, much cleaner than I expected (especially in lovely Antioch). The only real negative was the service was kinda mediocre & the dreaded Pepsi. Who the hell likes Pepsi over Coke? Especially with salty-sweet foods? I guess there are a few of you weirdos out there but to me it's just plain blasphemy.
We've been hearing good things about the NEW Bases Loaded so 4 of us decided to go for dinner after a matinee at El Campanil Theatre. Â We each ordered something different intentionally so that we could evaluate the food. Â My pulled pork sandwich was great, my wife's burger was obviously fresh ground beef cooked perfectly and our friend's half-rack of ribs was meaty and plentiful. Â Excellent fresh-cut french fries & garlic fries, very good onion rings & a wonderful fresh fruit side accompanied our meals. Â Service was very good and we felt the price was reasonable for what we received. Â Definitely will recommend to our friends.
Review Source:I've heard about this restaurant for quite some time, I didn't realize it was under new ownership until we arrived.
I was impressed with the amount of TV they had going on with the various sports, not just all focused in on one channel or one sport.
We were seated right away, the waitress was very quick to take our drink orders and friendly at that.
We ordered the Nacho's and then the cheeseburger. The Nacho's were probably the biggest serving of nacho's I've ever seen and the pork on it was to die for. It had a bit of a kick to it but you didn't have an empty chip anywhere.
The burger was awesome...juicy, seasoned well...100% Angus beef...their fries were crisp but not burnt....
Our drinks were never empty either, the server was there making sure our needs were met.
Definitely a fan of this place...I'm going back!!!
We had been here a few times before it closed. It just recently reopened with new owners so we had decided to give them another try. We like to support our local businesses.
Upon arriving, the host welcomed us and she was very friendly. She sat us and gave us our menus. Just after being seated, our waitress arrived who was also very friendly and took our drink order. My husband ordered a pitcher of beer and the waitress told us about their loyalty card special for the pitchers of beer. Awesome! No complaints so far.
At the time of ordering our drinks, my husband asked if they could turn one of the channels to the Sharks hockey game. One of the guys working their told my husband that as soon as one of the games was over, it was scheduled to come on right after. Ok, that's cool!
We then order our food, and while waiting, the hostess girl comes up with raffle tickets saying to put our name and phone number on them and on Sunday, Cinco de Mayo, they would have the drawing which we could win appetizers, etc. What a great idea! Again, no complains so far.
As we are eating, mostly through our meal, one of the guys changed the channel that my husband was watching, to a different game. At other restaurants, out of courtesy, they always ask the servers if anyone is watching a particular tv. In this case it wasn't done. The guy was specifically behind me and changed it and then said "did I do something wrong?", as if he knew he upset someone and then just left it on the channel he turned it to.
At that point, my husband was clearly very upset so he asked for the check. The waitress asked if my husband was watching that tv and he said yes and that he just wanted the check now. On the way out, my daughter dropped the 3 raffle tickets in the bucket.
As soon as we got home, not more that 10 minutes later we received a call from Bases Loaded. My husband answered. It was a girl, she asked  my husband "are you "S" (our daughter's name. Really? He's a man and that is a girls name. Either she's playing dumb or she is just that...dumb!). My husband said that is our daughter and the girl replied saying our daughter won an appetizer. First of all, why would my daughter win this if the raffle wasn't even until 2 days later. Second of all, during the whole conversation my husband had with this girl, she was laughing the whole time. My husband clearly replied telling her we didn't want the free appetizer cause we had no intentions on returning. She just laughed and said ok.
Now, if you clearly know a customer is upset with the service or experience, wouldn't you go out of your way to make sure to get it right the next time? Not by calling them up to mock the situation??? Yeah, we will NOT be back since this is the kind of customer service they have to offer!! Usually we would give a business a second chance but because we got that call, we have no desire of giving them a second chance. They will not last if it continues like this either!
A major improvement over its predecessor. The first difference is that management is there. The previous owner talked a big game but put no effort into execution. The one problem we had turned out to be a positive. Even Judit thought so and she will add salt to something I think is too salty. When I complained the owner was right there. I had assumed that their food was provided by a vendor and just heated up when ordered. No, this was prepared from scratch in their kitchen, not to order but that same day. The next time we came he ordered that item for us and for me it was just right. Judit added salt.
What we like: The beer selection. Something for everyone from Bud to an IPA. Good food at reasonable prices. Â We loved the scalloped potatoes, something seldom found. Try the half rack of ribs. With two sides it was more than Judit and I could finish combined and was very good. It is a very nice premises with a baseball theme.
What we do not like. Nothing much.
I hope the place makes as Antioch needs a place like it. I am not hopeful, however. The area is quite dicey and has gone downhill since we were there last. It would take something special to lure people here and I hope that this is it.
Went on a Saturday for lunch. Meh. The place was filthy. There was a layer of dust on the shelves near the booths, which was very disconcerting to see while eating. My friend and I wrote "clean me" in the dust in hopes of inspiring a thorough cleaning. Bathrooms smelled like a sewer backup and were filthy.
The menu seemed extensive but is not organized very well, and is printed on these odd small pages making it hard to read. I was surprised to find they don't brew ice tea and serve it from a machine..how much can it be to brew fresh tea?
We ordered the three pointer platter with fries and potato salad. The potato salad was not properly seasoned, and the potatoes were cut far to thin which made for an odd texture. The fries were nothing special either, and seemed overcooked. The meats had some good flavor but that could not compensate for the shortfalls. The ribs were supposed to be babyback but were very chewy and fatty. The brisket had a really good flavor but had been smoked too long so it was a little dry. The chopped meat had an excellent flavor.  I realize BBQ should be able to stand without sauce, but there was only about a tablespoon of sauce for all the meat on the plate. More sauce was definitely needed. There was also some weird jalapeño cornbread which was interesting, but a tad dry and lacking in flavor.
The servers were friendly, and one guy who claimed to be the owners friend didnt know when to stop talking so we could actually eat.
I want to support local businesses, but I will have a difficult time returning. Â I thought the pricing was reasonable for the portions received. However, much work needs to be done to improve the quality of food to ensure this place doesn't fail as the previous owners did.
It just reopened a few weeks ago under new ownership. Â The menu is improved and the service is much better. Â The bartenders are cool as hell and know what they're doing. Â You no longer have to wait 10 minutes to get a drink when there's only 3 other people at the bar. Â I've only had the steak tacos and they're excellent. Â The nicest change is the stupid large TV that use to overlook the entire dinner area was taken down. Â There use to be a bunch of large screen TV's put together to form one giant picture but the outer frames of the TV's would have these partitions that would block your view. Â Imagine trying to watch TV with a large tic-tac-toe pattern of bars covering the screen, It was garbage. Â Thankfully the owner has a brain and got rid of that.
Review Source:We tried the new Bases Loaded tonight, Friday. Â Just opened this week. Â The place looks very nice and we received good service. Â But the food was no better than the previous owners served, although the menu is better and more extensive. Â My order for medium rare rib eye steak came medium to well done. Â The steak was thin and had a huge 2 to 3 square inch slab of fat on one end. Â I ordered cole slaw and got over cooked vegetables. Â I like salt but the scalloped potatoes were so salty they were not edible. Â The waiter brought me cole slaw when I reminded him of my order and the cole slaw was bland. Â My daughter's medium ordered hamburger ($10) came well done, dry, Â and charred. Â The Caesar salad was good.
The men's room entire floor and urinal area were dirty and it wasn't even 6pm. Â Looks like it hasn't been cleaned since they opened earlier this week.
This restaurant has such potential. Good location, very nice interior, roomy and a nice looking bar, great and interesting mural on the building across the street so when you're  looking out the picture windows it's not drab or boring, but it felt to us like they are making the same mistake the previous owners made by serving poor food.  The raspberry iced tea was good.  Maybe if you just want drinks and a snack it might be ok but we spent $76 for dinner for three, with no alcoholic drinks, and it was a real disappointment.  If they serve good food like you can get at Carpaccio's then I think this place would be packed for lunch and dinner.  I've had many rib eye steaks at Carpaccio's and it is always thick and perfectly cooked.
The service was very good and I let the waiter know we appreciated his service but that the food was poor, and why. Â Left him 20% tip but no manager or owner came to explain the poor food. Â If we see some good reviews we'll try again in a few months, but I don't think Bases Loaded will last a year.
(Posted this on the old page; moved it here where it belongs!)
Under NEW ownership! Â We were excited to try the NEW Bases Loaded Restaurant, and we were not disappointed. Â The food was delicious, our server was friendly and attentive and the restaurant was clean with lots of TV's all around. Â
Their Monte Cristo sandwich was our table's favorite; crispy outside, soft and cheesy inside. Â I haven't had a really great Monte Cristo in years; DELICIOUS! Â We also enjoyed a garlicy chicken pizza that was truly a gourmet pizza, and the burger with a croissant style bun was giant and tasty. Â And I can't forget the dessert; we shared a Lava Cake; chocolatey, rich, melt in your mouth goodness!
The new owners have gone above and beyond to make Bases Loaded a great place to eat in downtown Antioch. Â We will definitely go back again.
Just REOPENED. Â
(My well intentioned review was filtered for no reason that I could think of). Â It's a shame when an honest review gets hidden away. Â Here we go again....
My wife and I just had a chance to try the "New" Bases Loaded. Â Our first impression is very favorable.
Having owned and operated a restaurant for 25 years in downtown Antioch, we understand some of the challenges. Â It looks like chef/owner John Hicks and his wife Penny are ready to take them on.
The first thing my wife mentioned was how clean everything was. Â The windows sparkled and there was a busboy making sure that there wasn't a speck of dust anywhere.
It was Thursday at about 5 pm so there wasn't much of a crowd yet. Â Our server Andy was attentive but not in our faces. Â Just right.
We ordered drinks - a glass of Merlot ($4.50) and a nicely poured Jack Daniels on the rocks ($6.50).
We shared an appetizer - it was fresh mozzarella, basil, tomato and garlic on a crostini. Â Wonderful.
We shared a cheeseburger (1/2 lb.) on an interesting croissant bun. Â We both enjoyed it very much. Â The french fries are fresh cut - perfectly cooked - not too light and not too crispy.
People I've talked to have really enjoyed some of the smoked meats - and that will probably be on my plate next time.
The décor is sports bar - but we are talking very family friendly.  The music was pretty contemporary and I think adding some oldies would be a nice touch.
Downtown Antioch is ready to get rediscovered and Bases Loaded can definitely be a part of that.
I don't think you need to wait for them to "work things out". Â The staff is very competent, the food is excellent and John has promised some very interesting specials to keep his patrons coming back.
El Campanil Theatre is just two blocks away and the combination of dinner and a show - is definitely a "Home Run" combination.
