We came from I-25 & county line road tonight. Purchased a groupon. Honestly, we really wanted to like it but the food is just average. The po' boys are good but not worth driving there to from our house. We also had the gumbo and étouffée. They were not very good....we left most of it in the bowl. We think they try hard, but the money and drive are not worth it. We will not be coming back again.

The Bayou Snack Shack is my new favorite place to get comfort food. My husband and I are taking a trip to New Orleans in July and since he's a Colorado native he's never had cajun food so we started to scout out restaurants.  When we came across the Snack Shack we thought we'd give it a try.  Growing up in Texas it's hard to find good cajun food in the area.  The food is incredible and the owners are from Louisiana-- authentic as it gets folks. This place has a mardi gras themed dining area and they play zydeco music making me feel at home (Galveston).  My husband and I have eaten there three times in 2 weeks, you might ay we're addicted (or that we dine out to much). Either way, you have to try this place it's definitely worth the wait.  They do make all their food from scratch so keep in mind its definitely not "fast food".  I recommend you call ahead and it'll be ready by the time you go pick it up. I don't reviews often, but after todays visit I thought it was a must.  As I was leaving the parking lot waiting at a red light one of the owners chased me down because they forgot to put one of my sides in my bag.  Her act of kindness blew me away! Stop by and try their chicken and sausage gumbo.

The food is very bland, and the location is bad- in close proximity to a high school so there many kids hanging out and loitering surrounding their entrance.

She said they are "known for" their poboys, so we ordered 3. The "blackened catfish" was a huge disappointment, the fish was rubbery and lightly sprinkled with paprika. Very little fish on a huge bready roll. My son said shrimp poboy was ok, and my husband had a fried catfish poboy, and didn't like that the fish was small and flavorless, and the bread too big for the filling.

Along with your poboy you might expect fries, but it came with a handful of potatoe chips in a basket.

I thought it was pretty expensive for what you get. Music was nice, but decor is cheap and lame, makes you wonder where else they cut back.

Iced sweet tea was strange, it had a slimy topping on it and was very sweet. But we didn't get sick so that's a plus.

I don't often write reviews, and when I do it is often to warn people about something I didn't like. But this is different.

Groupon in hand, we walked in with our two toddlers who were instantly greeted by the owner and each given a bag of popcorn. The owner and his wife were both quick with smiles and hellos.

After we sat down, the owner brought us over a free bowl of gumbo to sample. It was delicious. He and his wife both talked to us for a few minutes about the menu and the new restaurant. Very kind and you felt like they cared you were there and wanted you to have a good experience.

My wife and I each had a po' boy and shared a small shrimp Étouffée. The étouffée had wonderful flavor. I will get it again. But that Po' boy was out of this world. I had the blackened catfish with coleslaw and already want to go back for another, it was just that good. If I lived any closer I'd be at risk of losing a lot of money to that sandwich.

The decor was cheesy and cheap, the soup came in a paper bowl. I imagine things like that will change as the restaurant ages, they've only been at it a couple months.

We went on a Saturday night and the restaurant only had a few people in it, half of which were actually from New Orleans. I hope this restaurant does well. I know I'll be back ASAP.

Good food, good people and a wonderful place to show your support for the small business owner. They just recently started a lunch buffet and it was small but really good. Personal faves were the red beans and rice, cornbread and the jerk chicken. It's a heck of a deal for what they charge but if you can still snag the groupon for the buffet punch card, it's a phenomenal deal. I'm looking forward to hitting it again for dinner and trying some different stuff.

Great people great taste.  Joe and Michele are the owners of the place and you can't put a price on friendly.  Po boy anything is good.  I like shrimp.  I hate most coleslaws but this place is an exception.  Careful with the portions.  Order a full and you are either going to take half of it home or regrettably eat the second half.

I'll be coming back here again and would recommend it to anyone.

P.S. they also own the Indian restaurant next door Kathmandu for Indian and Nepalese.  That place seems always packed to me and I'll be going there next.

*shrug* i don't know... i guess my expectations are pretty high.  We had one of the combination platters here to try a little bit of everything and were not very impressed.  Nothing is cooked to order.  Items are reheated in the microwave.  Most items are... to be nice... REALLY average.  Maybe once they get their frier it'll help, but, i think for a supposedly educated "chef" the standards here are really low.

The Bayou Snack Shack is a great little joint located in a strip mall in Aurora. It certainly reminds me of the little places scattered throughout my home state serving up cajun and creole cuisine. The space is clean and bright, but doesn't offer much in the way of decor or atmosphere. With food this good, who cares about that stuff anyway??

I was the only customer for an early lunch, so I had a chance to talk with the owner for a bit. The family hails from Opelousas, Louisiana, just a few hours from where I grew up. She learned to cook from Grandma, from scratch, and it shows. Everything here is made from scratch, in house, and I really got the feeling I was eating a wonderful home cooked meal.

The menu is quite tempting, and offers Gumbo, Po-boys, etouffee, boiled seafood, red beans and rice....etc. I settled on a 6 inch blackened catfish po-boy, and a small bowl of seafood gumbo. I'll start with the Po Boy. The fish itself was delicious. It had enough flavor to cut through everything else on the sandwich without being spicy hot. The bread is thick, crusty, and buttery. Get it with the slaw, and it is heaven in a sandwich. It's a big sandwich, so a 6 inch is plenty. I also got a small bowl of seafood gumbo, which was really good. Easily the best gumbo I've had in Denver. It has a dark roux base, which adds so much to the flavor. There is no deep fryer here, so don't expect any kind of fried anything.

I want to add one more thing. I have not tried it here, but they offer boiled shrimp and crawfish(when in season). Southern boiled shrimp is prepared differently and is better than the asian cajun places on south federal. Those are OK, but for a true southern experience, I would bet that Bayou Snack Shack does a good job.

I'll update when I've had a chance to sample more of the menu.

Today we went to the neat little restaurant the Bayou Snack Shack. We arrived shortly after they opened at 11:00. The place is little and does not yet have a sign, just some window signs. The interior is currently pretty sparsely decorated as well. We ordered our food, I got blackened catfish and grits with red beans and rice and a mango smoothy and my wife ordered the shrimp platter. The owner/manager came over and said I was the first person to ever order off of the brunch menu (only on Sunday). I don't think this was much of a feat since I think today may have been the first day they were trying out a brunch.. Our food came out in to-go boxes. The food took a little while to come out, but you can't hurry grits. I liked my meal a lot. The grits were really good and the fish was flavorful. The beans and rice was also good. There may have been slightly to much salt in the grits, but it may have also been that the grits were perfect, but then got a bit of extra salt from the fish. They also brought us a bowl of potato salad to try and it was good, but I don't really like mayonnaise so I tried it, but really didn't eat it. My wife enjoyed her shrimp and said it was buttery and nice. The corn was also good. The people who were working there were all very cool and accommodated us when we requested the TV changed to the space jump and even some of the staff joined in on our enthusiasm in watching the guy successfully skydive from outer space. I have spent a lot of time in Louisiana and this really did have a truly authentic flavor to it. There were plenty of tables, but I did get the feeling that most people order to go from here, which is a shame since then they would not be able to meet the friendly staff. Before we left the owner gave us a couple of coupons for our next visit. It was pretty cool and did remind me of the little places in New Orleans you find when you get away from the tourists and find yourself eating in the little mom and pop places located in the strip malls in in Metairie and places like that.

A strange thing happens after you visit Bayou Snack Shack...visions of Po'Boy sandwiches consume your thoughts. You lay in bed at night thinking about the delicious blackened catfish filet. If you finally fall asleep, you dream about the amazing chewy, buttery bread and the tangy coleslaw that tops the sandwich.

Finally you give in...you drive way out of your way towards this mecca of creole goodness. As you get closer your heart races...your mouth waters. What is going on with me? Do they put some exotic narcotic in their seasoning?

BSS is tucked back in an unassuming strip mall near Smokey Hill High School. The temporary sign is already weathered after just 3 mos of being open. I think BSS must do this to keep a low profile, because if everyone knew what has hidden inside here, they may never be able to close their doors.

I can't decide if it's good or bad that I live almost 30 miles from this place. All I know is that I thought about that crazy sandwich almost everyday in between my first two visits.

    What I love:
    -Catfish Po'Boy Sanwich
    -Free freshly popped pop corn.
-The incredibly friendly and gracious owner.
    -Free Wi-Fi.
-That it's 30 miles from my home so I am not temped to eat there everyday.

    What I don't love:
-That it's 30 miles from my home so I can't eat there everyday.

Thank's to fellow Yelper Mark T, for recommending this spot. Reason #816 I freaking love Yelp!

At Bayou Snack Shack in Aurora, the good times are always a-rollin'. This delightful outpost on Smoky Hill Road will dazzle you with its Cajun and Creole options, so c'mon in!

Munch on a basket of buttery, salty popcorn (a lagniappe - or, if you prefer, little-something-extra - offered by the charming and very kind proprietors in a show of true Louisiana hospitality) while you try to narrow down your options just a tad. To begin, you could avail yourself of their version of nachos, with generous lashings of their signature chili! Or perhaps a chicken wing or two? Several styles are here for your munching pleasure, including the ever-popular Crazy Cajun! And of course, don't forget about the gumbo (in either crab-and-seafood or chicken-and-sausage varieties), slow-simmered with a roux so dark, you'll think there's been an eclipse at your table.

I know, you just want one of everything. Join the club. But wait until I tell you about some of the main dishes on offer. How about a filling po-boy sandwich, featuring a soft roll augmented by a nicely spicy pork hotlink? Then again, the catfish fillet smothered with the rich shrimp-and-veggie stew called Étouffée (also available by itself) looks mighty tasty as well, no? And I didn't even mention their newest item - tangy Cajun-Jamaican jerk chicken, a true mix of island spices and bayou smoking techniques.

Hang on, you still have some decisions to make. What would you like to go alongside your meal? Rich macaroni 'n' cheese? Sausagey red beans ladled over soft white rice? Coleslaw (lightly-mayo'd, to allow the natural flavors of the carrots and purple/green cabbages to shine through)? Or what about the always-toothsome Maque Choux, combining sugar-sweet corn kernels with soft tomatoes? Anything you pick will be a winner, I assure you.

Finish up with the Oreo/vanilla pudding amalgam called Dirt Pie, or even some banana pudding (yes, studded with wafers of the Nilla [TM] variety). And don't forget a glass or several of sweet tea to wash everything down.

Want a way to experience the fun of The Big Easy without having to show everyone your business? Well, what are you waiting for? Bayou Snack Shack is your place.

This cafe is just west of Buckley Road on Smokey Hill Road, behind 7-Eleven.  The Bayou Snack Shack Cajun and  Creole Cafe is a new restaurant that opened about a month ago. The food is healthy and delicious. I had the Po' Boy Catfish sandwich. The six inch was huge and very filling, and extremely tasty. The shrimp etouffee and rice was great as well.   The prices are extremely reasonable too. The only negative is the furnishings are not so great. The same food on a nicer place would be amazing.
