Wow I just scarfed down a big plate of Chicken Curry and Vegetables/Potatoes. I didn't think it was going to be that tasty but thanks to my office mates suggestion.
Lucky for me I had no preconceptions of it being the best restaurant in Springfield, so it didn't get overated from the start. It looks like that's the reason for some of the low ratings here. I find it quite decent eating option for downtown sightseers and workers.
I generally feel that people in Springfield either don't know or don't remember what a good food tastes like. One reason I say this is because people seem to rave about Bentoh (though not that much here on Yelp) and by my rather generous standards, this place is crap. I have eaten at Bentohs three times. The first, to try it out. The second because "they couldn't have been that bad, I must have been mistaken." And the third because a friend pushed it because Obama ate there. Each meal was subpar. I have had more original and tasty sushi from a supermarket pre-made counter. Better pad thai can be found a few blocks away at the Magic Kitchen, and the Blackened Chicken was just poorly made. Â Don't go to Bentohs, you can find better and less expensive meals in the cafeterias at St Johns or Memorial.
Review Source:Since the Springfieldians ( if there is such a word!) - pointed out the fact that this was Obama's favorite restaurant in Springfield, I had to go and check that out last week. I usually get very angst when i go to places Japanese (given the vegetarian options are usually next to nothing) - I was pleasantly surprised to see Bentohs offering more than one vegetarian option. I ordered brown rice with vegetables - the food was warm, good and may be slightly over on the Soy side. It was a good lunch - nothing more to it than that. While I was there -snapped some photos of Obama on the wall with the owners etc. That probably was the highlight of my visit to Bentohs!.
Review Source:I was really excited to try Bentoh's based on other yelper's reviews and my SO's mother raving about their food. Unfortunately I was very disappointed. I love teriyaki bowls and normally consume at least two a week- they are the perfect combination of rice and vegetables for a satisfying lunch. So, while in downtown SPI, we decided to stop and have lunch before hitting the Lincoln Museum. I ordered the veggie bento with brown rice and my SO got the veggie pad thai. We were warned that the pad thai was "different" and were offered a small sample which tasted OK. However, upon receiving  the full sized pad thai, it was truly gross. It tasted like Spaghetti-O juice mixed with noodles, egg and sriracha to make it spicy. Bleh. As for the veggie bento, I was underwhelmed again. I've never had a veggie bowl/rice plate served with potatoes and tasteless, frozen corn; they seem foreign to Japanese food. Maybe they were included because this is the Midwest? Anyways, the place is very popular with locals and seating is very tight, as well as hot. I just had a lot higher hopes and was completely disappointed by my Bentoh's experience.

This is a tiny place that easily missed, but I would go find it if you haven't been there for lunch. Â
The downside is they don't have a large menu selection, but the food is very well prepared. Â I've had the Korean-style beef and the blackened salmon and both were excellent. Â Overall the cuisine is Asian inspired. Â Probably fusion. Â
The atmosphere reminds me of a small indoor family hot-dog stand in New York. Â With only 3-4 tables, its definitely more of a to-go type of place. Â It is very clean, just not a lot of elbow space.
I would expect to spend about 10-15 for lunch, but its totally worth it.
Parking is a little tough to, but they have 2 spaces in the back.
Definitely worth checking out for lunch.
Very delicious! Very unassuming... so small, you hardly know it's there... especially when zooming down 5th street. The only reason I knew about it was from some drug reps who brought lunch to a place I used to work. It would be limiting to say this was an "Asian" food restaurant... maybe Asian fusion. I ordered the Bentoh's salad with beef... and it was easily two meals for this girl (maybe not for a guy). My beau ordered the Chicken Bento which is chicken (choice of sauce), stir fried veggies and rice. It looked like a huge plate of food... but he ate all of it. We ate there, but I recommend carry-out or delivery because the place is so small. The staff is wonderful and are very helpful if it's your first time there.
