Stopped by after some wine tasting on Memorial Day. Can't complain about the service as we got our food quickly but I wouldn't call the waitress friendly. The food was okay. I enjoyed the fried pickles but the blackened red fish was lacking some flavor as well as the vegetables. We also got the fried oysters which were okay, although the sauces it came with were very good. Overall a satisfactory experience.
Review Source:They definitely take pride in and care about their food. Everything we had at our table of four was excellent. We had fish tacos, fried shrimp, red beans and rice, garlic mashed potatoes, oysters and clam chowder. All are recommended. If I have one complaint, it's that their fresh waffle fries were undercooked. We could have sent them back but we didn't. They have a great selection of specialty beers on tap. We will be back!
Review Source:I found this sweet, festive spot on Yelp, but of course! A ton of reviews and overall great ratings, plus a plethora of useful mobile tips that are always fun to quickly flip through. Keep it up, you fabulous yelpers! You were right about Big Fish. It's definitely fun, laid back, inexpensive, cute, and most importantly... they serve fresh, homey seafood.
We started with the Mexican style shrimp cocktail: baby shrimp and fat chunks of avocado floating in a tall glass of spicy cocktail sauce, alongside diced tomatoes and jalapeños. There's a bit of heat to it, but it's so cold and clean that the spice is no problemo. You may even want to add a dash of tabasco. $5.99 and plenty to share.
For my entree I chose the catfish dinner: two decent-sized blackened filets atop a bed of garlic mashed potatoes, a side of red beans and rice, and a thick lemon wedge to squeeze over it all. The portion was just right; not so small that you're still hungry, but not so big that you'll need a to-go box. About $12, and although the cuisine was nothing out of the ordinary, everything was cooked beautifully. The BF ordered a fried oyster po'boy and clam chowder, and he was all smiles.
Big Fish's ambiance makes me think of Joe's Crabshack, and I mean that in the best way it can be meant. The decor isn't overly nautical or anything annoying, and it's a casual, comfortable, family-centric type restaurant with a full bar full of great specials (including house margaritas and bloody mary's). But what truly makes Big Fish stand out is it's attentive, authentic service, and - of course - it's satisfying menu classics and fresh-fish specials of the day!
Crawfish all you can eat on WEDNESDAYS ONLY!!! 24.99.....
We started with fried oysters and worked our way up to somewhere around 6 1/2 pounds of those tiny lobsters a piece......
This place is on my radar for future seafood cuisine....Live music provided! Wait time is possible as this place does its fair share of business.....
GO NOW!!
Alright folks for years I have been driving past this place and wondered. I shall wonder no more. Went there for lunch a few weeks back with the other half and her friend. I tell you what if you are looking for great service and great seafood, go some where else.
It was a lunch rush after all and the place was packed, which means this place is doing something right. Took about 10 mins for us to get a seat, which is no big deal.
I got the Big Fish sandwich, the wife got a plate of craw fish tails and her friend got the Catfish Po boy.
I think they were catching our fish and craw fish fresh in their backyard, cause it took over 30 mins for our food to come out. When it did though, I was a happy camper. The portions were huge for the price. The waffle fries were nice and crispy as I like my fries. My sandwich was good, the craw fish tails were well tiny and our friend enjoyed here Po boy.
All in all I can say this is your bang for the buck. You get pretty big portions for a small price. The service over all sucked, or at least our waiter did. Just to much time went by between our drink order, once the food arrived and when we received our bill. He barely did any checking up on us. The refills were non existent. I have had better service at Long Dong Silver!
Since I won't have any high hopes for service, I shall return for the food. Its not great, but in this case I'm going for quantity. If I want great inland sea food I will take my ass to Pappadeaux's. This place is several notches above Long Dong Silver and at almost the same price point and the seafood here is real, maybe not fresh, but its real!
Went in for crawfish. Â Had none. Â Got the pasta special instead and the sauce to pasta ratio was like 3:1, it was more like a soup. Â Scallops were not seasoned and over cooked. Â Dish was laden in butter and left a film of grease on my pallet. Â My sister and mom got the crab and shrimp steam pot thing and the only saving grace was the crab, it was good. The shrimp were overlooked and frankly, kind of smelly. Â I feel like they cooked them two days ago and left them in the fridge. Â I dunno, 2 stars is pushing it, especially when service was nothing special either. Â Teen girls and boys sitting in bars tools, chit chatting, constant cell phone use, over all disappointing. Â Our server was good though, but I forgot her name.
Review Source:I've had better seafood for less money.
The calamari was decent, but I mean its deep fried...so can you really mess that up?
The Alaskan Amber on tap was delicious.
The reasons I can not really even give it 3 stars:
a. Its a TINY place. TINY. So if you go on a weekend evening you will most likely NOT be able to wait inside. Keep this in mind should you visit in December as I did. Being so small, it really created a crowd at the front door area that was very frustrating to deal with.
b. My fish tacos...The waitress said they would be good.
Yes, you do get plenty because they are big but they are not traditional fish tacos. They're like fish wraps? Fish burritos? I'm not sure. They dont taste fresh and light and delicious. They taste heavy?...Eh no thanks. Most importantly though, the fish tasted like dirty sink water. Or dirty river water. Or just dirty. I had to drown mine in some sauce served on the side (spicy mayo?) to eat it...contributing to that heavy feeling. Just not what I expected for fish tacos. My sister ordered the same and hers tasted funky too.
c. It was expensive considering I bought two tacos and two beers and spent over $35 bucks.
Save your money and go somewhere else, like Baja or even Fuzzys.
This place puzzles me a bit.
The food was pretty good. Â I got the blackened shrimp plate with veggies and hushpuppies. Â The veggies were good and the hushpuppies weren't bad (you could find better if you looked, but these were still tasty). Â The shrimp were done really well. Â Food was brought out promptly. Â It wasn't too terribly loud. Â The ambiance was decent. Â It's super casual, which is nice to find on the main strip in Grapevine. Â The bar is definitely well-stocked and seemed to be quite popular.
However, the service was mediocre. Â When I walked in, the hosts (plural) were just sitting at a table, chatting. Â They didn't really seem to care to seat me (or rather, stop talking), but did it without too much issue. Â It took a while for my server to show up, but it wasn't terribly long of a wait. Â However, he didn't really seem to care. Â But he was really nice and friendly. Â My food came promptly (ish - I wasn't really timing it and it seemed like I was waiting for a while, but I'm sure I wasn't). Â I never did have my drink refilled until I had already payed the check. Â Overall, the service wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great. Â The staff were friendly, but again, kinda mediocre service.
I've been wanting to try this place for awhile and my husband and I finally stopped in last night. Saturday night crowd at 7:30, it was packed. Waited at the bar, great friendly/quick service. Only had to wait 5 minutes. Great fast service for how crowded it was. Menu was simple and prices are very reasonable. We had the shrimp cocktail and fish tacos. Both were great. We eat fish a lot and we were both impressed with how great the food was and how quick service was.
We'll be back for sure.
This place defines the word "mediocre," everything about it was disappointing. Even the music was bad!
Food: Shrimp po-boy was really fishy and the chicken sandwich was dried out, served with lackluster fries
Server: The two employees there when we entered the building looked at us like we had interrupted their conversation, "uhh... Is it self seating.?" the answer is yes, and after that I prob would have rather been my own waiter too lol
Atmosphere: home-style diner. There was a CD on that will prob remain in my head forever as there were only 4 words- "solid as a rock."
Parking: street
Started off our Vegas vacation with a stopover at Big Fish before flying out the next morning. Â The flounder stuffed with crabmeat and cajun creme sauce with absolutely delicious! Â Hubs redfish with a tropical salsa was also very good. Â Nice place, great atmosphere. Â However......... Â the bartender only knows how to make the "new" fad appletinis - the cheap kind where you leave out the Midori and add in sweet & sour. Â It makes this awful looking drink that's very pale green and looks similar to a dirty martini. Â YUK! Â Half the fun of an appletini is that bright, clear, intense green color and the wonderful, fresh taste. Â It's a classic! Â You don't mess with a classic, just like you don't mess with TEXAS! Â And, as is usual these days in the DFW area...... it was HOT and STICKY inside too. Â Would I return - YES - the food is worth it, but it will be during cooler months and I will definitely tell the bartender how I would like my appletini made next time - vodka, pucker & Midori - the way it was intended! Â :)
Really, there is an epidemic of the cheap, sweet & sour appletini out there.... I'm noticing it everywhere. Â I have had to resort to telling the waitress how I want mine made and what I expect it to look like - it's the only way to get the original now. Â So frustrating......................
Loved the casual atmosphere in here when we walked in off the street today (a Friday) at lunchtime. We got one of the last tables at high noon and our waiter came over right away. Â Our drinks were kept filled up throughout our service. Â The sweet tea was pretty tasty but not the best I've had. Â I had a cup of gumbo which I thought was excellent and the peel-n-eat shrimp. Great cocktail sauce with a spicy horseradish bite. Very fresh and yummy. Â
My brother and his wife had the crab and shrimp platter for 2 - they're healthy eaters and really 3 people could have eaten off of that platter. It was a lotta food for a very fair price! Really good seafood too with the drawn butter, some sausage, boiled potatoes and corn on the cob to go with it all.
My husband wasn't too thrilled with his fish and chips. A little too fishy and greasy. An unfortunate choice with all the other offerings on the menu though, we'll be back to try this place again. Â We found that it's a great value on Main Street and a very pleasant place to eat.
1.5 star.
I don't know how to feel about this place.
It was a crowded afternoon around dinner time, service was just super super slow. Friends and I had to wait for 30 minutes for our server to stop by and take our order.
A friend ordered a salad, appetizer (to share) and a main dish. She was not expecting to see a big plate for a salad so she was shocked when the server brought the salad to her. Later on, when our server called out the dishes for appetizer and the main course and our friend said "they are (also) all mine", the server paused, hesitated to give her the food, and asked the friend "WHAT? Are you really hungry or something?"
WHAT? Excuse me? First of all, we had no idea how big the food portion is. Second of all, we are bringing business to you. So please just be grateful instead of questioning how much food we ordered. It is not nice to comment and imply "why you eat so much" to the customer when we clearly had no idea about the portion of the dish.
The food was mediocre. I would NOT return to this place.
So I went here for dinner on a Thursday night during a Rangers game after work, unknowing the game was on. The atmosphere was like any other restaurant - relatively noisy with the game on at the bar and fellow customers around me eating/talking away after work.
When our server took our drink order, she quickly asked if we were ready to order as if we already knew what we wanted. We didn't even have a menu present as we just sat down at our table and it was our first time here. As we asked for a bit more time to look over the menu it took her, what seemed like, 10 minutes to come back to take our order for an appetizer. Even though we were ready to order our entree it didn't dawn on her to take this as she quickly dashed off to put it into the computer and disappear once again for another 10 minutes. With her small section of 5 tables I don't see how she could possibly be too busy to check on her customers/tables/etc. I've been a server, I know how busy/not busy having sections are at peak hours.
When she finally decided to reappear to take our order she was by far one of the worst servers I've had or seen for that matter. She hardly checked on us or her other tables, our drinks remained empty till the very end of our meal, she decided to flirt/talk to a group of 3 guys next to us the whole time despite her having tables diligently waiting on her to greet/take their order, and seemed like she'd rather talk to those guys or disappear rather than work. If it wasn't for the small pail of saltine crackers on the table, my date for the night who made me laugh at how awful she was and me trying to keep an open mind about this place, I would have complained to the manager or just walked out. I'm sure the other customers around me would have complained about her.
I'm sure there are far better servers in this restaurant and we just got the shaft end, but I can't praise their service like those prior to me. But food tips about this place..
[Appetizer]
+ Crab cakes - good, definite recommend if you're needing a quick fix of crab cake. You get 3 small patties with 2 different sauces to dip them in.
[Entree]
+ I ordered the Fish Tacos (half order or whole): it's Tilapia (choice of grilled, blackened, fried, I chose grilled) in a wrapped up tortilla with various veggies inside, rice pilaf to the side and a small dipping sauce. Was it amazing? Not really, it's pretty average.
+ My date ordered from the chalkboard, the Almond Encrusted Trout. The trout was pretty good, tender and the finely chopped, encrusted almonds gave it a sweet taste. There was this sauce on top that gave it a small kick too. I'd recommend this dish over the fish tacos I got to be honest. It also comes with rice pilaf and various veggies to the side.
All in all the food was decent, but I wouldn't say it was amazing. It can hit the spot if you're needing a seafood fix while in Grapevine. If you're wanting something better though I'd recommend going elsewhere. For me, I may try going back to this place in hopes I don't get this server again. If I do, I'm specifically asking for someone else otherwise I don't foresee myself coming back. It's just an average seafood place.
WOW.
A group of coworkers and I were directed to Grapevine, TX to check out the historic district while we were in the area for a conference. We were also told that Big Fish was the place to go for dinner, so we put our name down for a table before we started walking around. I was REALLY glad we had done so as it ended up being 2 hours before we were able to be sat (and this was on a Wednesday night).
Little did we realize, it was all you can eat crawfish night! Which we didn't find out about until we had paid the bill and was leaving, but I digress.
The three of us on one end of the table ordered the beach party platter (2 lbs of crab, a lb of shrimp, and a lb of sausage), as well as a crawfish platter to share. As we were all from out of town (CA, NY, NC, and GA were represented), we needed some help in figuring out how to eat the "mud bugs". The server did a quick tutorial on how to suck the heads, pinch the tails off, and grab the meat, and we were soon digging into the meal.
Holy cow. How have I never had crawfish before? Are they always this good?? I'm now regretting my 30 years of non crawfish eating because DANG these were GOOD!! The crab was also amazing, and the shrimp was perfectly cooked.
We had done a bit of wine tasting before dinner, so I was perfectly happy with some sweet tea to round out my meal, and I could've been rolled out of there once we were done.
I could see why folks would wait for hours for a seat at this restaurant!! Will definitely have to come back before crawfish season is over! I'm just glad I finally had a chance to "suck some heads and pinch some tails"!! The meal was also surprisingly affordable and we all chuckled when the bill came out (just $100 for 5 of us, which was surprising since we had SO MUCH food!)!
It's always good to find a solid lunch venue where you can escape reasonably for under $10. Â This place gets popular on Fridays in March, partly due to folks of the Catholic persuasion seeking fish entrees instead of "meat." Â I sometimes intentionally get a hamburger, just to prove that I don't follow that tradition. Â However, Big Fish does offer a fried shrimp basket for $5.99 and reasonably priced fish entrees for those who do observe "fish-only Fridays."
Anyway, I think this place is also pretty good for winding down with a cold one, as they seem to offer a decent selection of beers. Â The vibe there is super-casual but very comfortable and the decor is old-school. Â They are currently running crawfish specials as this is written. Â I guess it is kind of like being transported to a bar and grill you would be likely to find on the gulf-coast. Â Big Fish is good stuff.
This is the definition of my favorite kind of place. Â Exceptional menu with all my favorites. Â I darn near thought I was in Nawlins! Â Crawfish ($8 pound), Po Boys, Gumbo, etc. Â I had the lunch special of the day: Blackened Red Fish with Crawfish cream sauce, rice, and awesome veggies. Â I will go back to try a po boy and the gumbo. Â Very comfortable atmosphere and felt like every server in the place was waiting on me. Â Awesome staff. Â If I were to own a bar & grill it would be exactly like this place. Â Love it!
Review Source:Hubby and I ate a late lunch here during holidays/vacation days, when downtown Grapevine is at its best. Love this area!!!
We tasted wines at Su Vino, and asked for lunch recommendations. Â Our server mentioned Big Fish, among a few other spots, but this hit the spot. She said I had to try the seafood quesadillas, so that, I did. They did not disappoint. Â Succulent pieces of shrimp and scallops filled the cheesy inside and the sauce complimented this so well. Â Hubby had his fave, the fish n chips, and he had no complaints other than his fries werent hot?!! Good wines and beers too.
Pretty good service although perhaps slow refilling waters and such. We would come back. Loved the table by window to people watch! Â I want to try this on a weekend night when they tout live music.
This town was so charming! I wish I had more time to go shopping. Â The town was the epitome of what I envision when I think about Texas, low lying flat roofs, straight main roads, cowboy boots everywhere and a local pharmacy not a CVS.
back to the food....
I ordered the New England Clam Chowder (the white one to them Texas boys) and the Cocunut Salmon in thai sauce with veggies and rice.
I'm so pleasantly shocked at how good the fish came out! The entire restaurant is fairly inexpensive but everyone looked to get a good amount of food... my dinner was $25 pre tip. I'd say I did pretty well
The place of this restauraunt is great! Â I love walking downtown grapevine and stopping by here for lunch or dinner is delightful! Â The food is good and service is great. Â I have only been here for lunch and never a wait. Â Not a big place so probably not ideal for big parties....
Love it!
We like it. Pretty simply done, basic stuff that kit the spot. Very impressive bar tender - but less impressive frozen pomegranate margarita. Kind of metallic tasting.
Fried catfish/oysters combo, mash, red beans for me, fried oysters and broccoli slaw for madame.
Portions not huge (good thing too), but all around tasty.
Parking is the pits in Grapevine on a Friday evening, though.
Stopped in here for dinner on a Friday night and had an enjoyable experience. Â I had the grilled shrimp with red beans and rice and grilled veggies. Â The shrimp was excellent as were the red beans and rice, Â
Our waiter was friendly even though he was obviously swamped.
The one thing I wasn't that crazy about was the bread pudding- it didn't really have any flavor at all.
While on a visit to Main Street after a long day of conference sessions, I wanted something to eat. Â My group decided to go to Big Fish for dinner and I'm glad we ate there.
I had never eaten crawfish before, so I was excited to see it on the menu. Â I ended up ordering the flautas. Â I thought they were pretty good. Â I wouldn't have minded going back again to eat there if we had more time. Â I also enjoyed the sweet tea there. Â The waiter was also very nice and accommodating.
Big Fish was almost just like Fish City, except not as yummy. Â Even their logos are similar...
Anywho - I got the shrimp cocktail veracruz.  On the menu it sounded super yummy, in my mouth, it tasted like insanely sweet salsa with  little shrimp in it.  Not Delicious at All.
I also got the fish tacos. Â They were like little grilled roll ups. Â They were quite good and I really enjoyed them.
The nite we went they have a guitar guy playing tunes. Â Not too loud and pretty talented. Â
I would give it another chance because I really liked the musician they had, but maybe stick to more familiar menu items.
Had a very nice evening here last night. Â We will definitely make it a regular stop when we are in Grapevine. Â Had a drink at the bar while waiting on friends to arrive. Â The Bloody Mary was OK, could have use a little more garnish, and my wife had some foo-foo drink that she enjoyed, but I can't remember. Â The bartender was very personable, and as it turns out he was doing double duty as our waiter when we were seated. Â He transferred the bar tab to our table, which is always welcome so we don't have to do that twice. Â Not sure if they we're missing a waiter, or if he always does both jobs, but I never heard him complain about it once, and he never missed a beat with us.
Had the blackened redfish, which I enjoyed alot. Â I wish there was a little more rice on the dish, but overall it tasted very good. Â We also had Oysters, shrimp, crab legs, and calamari at the table. Â Everything I tried was well cooked and had great flavor. Â
This is a really nice, casual, atmosphere. Â Reminiscent of a big city, downtown, hole in the wall local establishment. Â The menu had good options, and there is a Daily Fresh Menu Board to choose from also.
Wasn't quite ready for dessert, or I would have tried the bread pudding. Â Maybe next time, but we were in a hurry to get outside and enjoy a cigar. Â We found dessert at the next place, which doens't get such a great review from me.
All the waitstaff was pleasant and cheerful, the food was great, the atmosphere was great, the prices were reasonable. Â What else do you need in a local restaurant?
I'll be back often if I can
Been there. Done that. Got the t-shirt. And keep going back! Â Consistently good food and service. Good prices. When in season, best crawfish in Metroplex.
Update... Â Food remains excellent yet service has taken a significant and consistent turn for the worse. In 5 visits in the past 3 months, simple orders are messed up, drink refills become a challenge and waitstaff often seems bothered to do their job. Even with all this, food remains excellent so still definitely worth the visit
Having lived in Dallas since 1984, it's embarrassing to admit we'd never been to nearby Grapevine, Texas, before. But a concert by local jazz favorite The Paul Slavin Trio at the Palace Theater brought us out for an evening in the cute small town.
We started at BIG FISH Seafood Grill & Bar right there on Main, just down the street from the theater. The place was packed and noisy on a Friday night, with people three-deep at the narrow bar and nearly every table taken. It looked promising. A waiter led us to a small table jammed into an elevated "balcony" space overlooking the bar.
Our order(s), including bar orders, seemed to take FOREVER, with a different wait-person bringing things each time. It felt like we were being waited on by a committee. The food was adequate (that's called damning by faint praise, BTW), expensive for what we got ($12 for a couple of sad-looking crab cakes and a handful of fries, for example), but, as other reviewers here have mentioned, the drinks are cold...
What really frosted our bippie, however, was their bar television. In addition to music playing in the background and the loud conversations all over the bar, the TV was blasting FOX NEWS bloviators at top volume. Bill O'Reilly shouted at us while we sipped our cocktails. Glenn Beck weeped and wailed as I picked at my crab cakes. It was a right-wing propaganda fest that made our seafood feast taste worse than it probably was. The shrieking and shouting that the restaurant lets FOX bombard their customers with is quite astounding and, for us at least, completely unacceptable.
We politely requested that the TV be turned down a little and were met with a frosty stare from the waiter, who simply turned on his heel and walked away without saying anything! We watched and he didn't even approach the bartenders or the manager with our request.
We finished our meal, paid the check (including a 15% tip--we're not Barbarians) and left.
We will not be going back to BIG FISH. There are MUCH better seafood restaurants around the Dallas-area than this. And they don't subject you to attempted brain-washing while dining at them.
I love seafood and this place does it right. Its always fresh and the menu and speicals are inventive and yummy.
Do yourself a favor and try the coconut shrimp salad with thai peanut dressing. Its just really freakin good. Also the seafood quesadillas were very tasty. And their specials always look really good (I cant break away from the salad. Its really that good!)
This location is perfect if you are wanting to cruise main street and have a good meal.
From top to bottom.
First, location is great right on the main street in grapevine proper.
Second, due to this the parking completely sucks. Â I ended up accidentally entering the service entrance and made my way to the front.
Third, Not good for kids as the bar is not really separate from the restaurant and the patrons definitely enjoy not having any smoking ban type laws in that bar!
Fourth, Seating sucks as there are two special boards and there as some tables that can only see one of the two.
Fifth, Service is not bad they were there when I needed them and gone when I did not want them.
Sixth, Food is pretty bland and dull.
Seventh, why the hell am I numbering this.
Overall, the price is not bad but the food is not really great. Â Perhaps a good place to go after work to score a cig and a beer.
