I've been here numerous times.  I am a pastrami on rye with mustard and mayo and yellow cheese.  To me Katz in NYC is the best but I have to say Big Stash was very good .  If I can't get to the city I will continue to come here.  I haven't tried anything else on the menu but I probably will.

The price is good and the service is good.

Three things to order are Stuffed Cabbage, Stuffed Cabbage, and Stuffed Cabbage.  Also their sides are really good rye bread, peppers, potato n Mac salads.  The booze is good,I never left that place feeling like I was robbed and the bartender are nice even bought me a drink.
This placers good for large family gatherings like a repass or other family events.

    Ever seen Deerhunter??

You gotta see this place.  The bar on a Saturday afternoon is packed full of Union County's working class, these guys are your plumbers, your locksmiths, your bricklayers.  There are Teamster and various union stickers all over the bar, these are the good folks keeping family businesses like this alive.  This is what Jersey is all about.

None of that franchised, tofu bullshit.  This is home cooking like my grandmas used to make.  You can get a burger and fries and other American fare here, but why would you?  There's a good selection of Polish dishes.  So when in Rome...

I had the Veal Paprikash and it was great, although nothing like the paprikash (with sour cream) that I'm used to.  My fiance had the bigos, which was aight.  The sauerkraut was delicious, I'm just not a huge fan of kielbasa.  There was another meat in there as well, looked like pork.  He also had a side of breaded cauliflower.  Nice sized portions.  Before our meals came out, we were each served 2 slices of rye bread and butter, as well as a nice assorted bowl of cherry peppers and pickles.  2 Zywiecs each to wash it down.  Authentic.  $35 total including the beers, not too shabby.  We ate at the bar and the service was great.

We joked on our way out that we should have our wedding reception here (there's a banquet hall downstairs).  Just kidding, but next time I'm in Linden, I know where to go.

Welcome to the Lindens Finest list.

I've been here two times prior, but never to eat. I've lived in Linden for about 17 years now and I always knew about this place, but never went TO EAT.

    DAMN IT'S GOOD EATIN'.

I got the stuffed shells...a special...I never order specials...I usually just get a sandwich, but I felt compelled to go HAM.

And man...so good. And what about those pirogi? B-b-b-bangin'.

In my next life I need to come back Polish so I can walk in here without gettin' the 'What's Donald Glover doin' in here' eye.

On the way out, I noticed that it's cash only.

Luckily, I always walk around with $500.

My point is, if you can be around for as long as this place has been and not take any sorta plastic, you doin' things right.

    You're a boss.

Mmmm pierogies. They got the good kind here. Not doughy, tasty filling, and served up right. I had fried pork chops (yummy) with green beans (canned, booo!) and mashed potatoes (so-so). Friend had a keilbasa sandwich that was okay. Place is super outdated, but I would expect nothing else from an old polish banquet hall. Service was good. All the waitress are delightful old timers.

Mmm stuffed cabbage, my favorite Polish food. There's a bunch of places to get it in Linden, but I could say that none of the others will be as big, plump and packed with meat as the ones from Big Stash's. The dinner portion is 3 pieces with veggies and a carb, but I would recommend the lunch which is only 2. You will be stuffed from one and probably end up taking the other out.
The beer prices at the bar are typical for the area, around 2-4 bucks for a pint, 9-10 for a pitcher. The order in which the bottles of liquor were set up was interesting. Every bottle was mounted pointing downwards for easy and quick pouring. Nice touch. The bartender was nice and had an adorable accent. Irish? Maybe.
There's a cool collection of hats around the bar worth taking a look at before you leave. The restaurant itself is quite large, and is available for rent as a banquet hall. Oh and cash only. There's an ATM inside.  Union County folks should definitely check out this city staple.

I'm definitely a fan of this place, but one of the complaints I have is their lasagna.

My complaint is that when you order the lasagna, it's SO big it's like for 4 people! And it's so much money, I couldn't even finish half. My message to them is make the lasagna smaller or lower the price. Otherwise, it's great. I would recommend their cranberry juice.

Moved to the Jersey shore from Elizabeth in 1991. When I worked at the Exxon Refinery, we use to go there for lunch. It was fantastic!
Last week I took my family there for "kicks and giggles". My girls were thoroughly surprised! The food was good, plentyful and the waitress was personable and friendly. We really enjoyed it (LOL).
I'm laughing because I didn't know how my girls would react. Turns out they liked it just as much as I do!
Whether you choose to sit at the bar, sit in the dining room, or go up to the cafeteria style (with trays and all) counter... the Polish food is all good! As for their non-Polish food? I can't comment. Why would I want to order anything else while I was there?
Do you go to a pizzeria and order corned beef and cabbage?

The only times I have ever been to Big Stash's is for a repast.  There is a big cemetery not far and this is one of the few places that accommodate large groups of people at an affordable cost.

The last time I went was when my grandfather passed away.  They had kielbasa, fried chicken, stuffed cabbage and a few other dishes.  There was also pitchers of beer and soda offered to each table.  There were about 45 people there.  My family and I felt kind of rushed.  We arrived a little later than we had thought we would but the weather was really bad that day.  It was snowing and there was a lot of ice on the roads.

However I believe the bill was around $400 for everything.  That's frikkin cheap for 45 people eating buffet style and drinking beer and soda.  There were also just some standard pastries laid out on a table too.

Growing up eating my mother's Polish homecooking, this place is an embarrasment. Went here with a friend and the food was bland, his ribs were boiled, not grilled or baked. used to go here as a child for family events, where I remember their catering wasn't that bad. However, the restaurant is some place I won't be returning to.

(2.50 stars)  One of the undiscovered gems of the Union County dining scene, and considering that they've been here for generations, Big Stash's is destined to remain a secret.  The decor is unquestionably throw-back; it's an old, wood paneled bar.  Their beer is always cold and inexpensive, but doesn't stray beyond the basic pedestrian brands.  Service is purely efficient and cold, unless you're known here (I'm not).  While the cheap beer is a lure, and the cast of characters is interesting, come to Big Stash's for kielbasa and-- in particular-- their pierogies.  The food is very good, and also very reasonably priced.  They're cash only, in the 21st century, but this is an old world type of place.

One of the last places I know in the area where you can hang your head and eat a great home cooked meal.  Great and colorful patrons, mostly folks of previous generations, entertain eachother with great stories (mostly about work, funerals, and drinking).  The kielbasa and pierogies go without saying.  Also the crab sandwich was very good.  Cheap beer is a plus.  Also, great selections are always on the TV.. not just sports.  An odd observation, the temperature is always very comfortable here.

If you're into trendy restaurants that care more about the interior then the food I'm guessing Big Stash's isn't for you.  If you're into good, cheap food, cheap drinks, and friendly bartenders check this place out.  Home made pierogies are amazing although they are not avaiable every day.  Kielbasi is also very good.  Comes with rye bread and a side.  This place may not look it, but they make some great food.

Like the 1st reviewer Martin says, this joint is quite retro. Heck, it feels like my parents basement with all the dark wood paneling. But don't let that scare you off. I've gone here at least 10 times for lunch over the last 18 months since discovering Big Stash's. While the female staff at the cafeteria-style lunch counter is European gruff as Martin alluded to, they are very accommodating. Recently, a group of 4 of us were in the mood for a "Polish sampler" type of meal that was not on the whiteboard. The ladies were nice and made up family-style plates of bigos, keilbasa, red cabbage, beets and other assorted Polish goodies. Can't believe that they only have pierogies Friday-Sunday. What kind of Polish place doesn't have pierogies every day?!?! No harm done and I keep coming back. When your order is ready, they call your name on the loudspeaker. You can even grab a beer from the bar to wash down your food. Soda is sold in cans so they can escape giving you free refills.

If you want some good, heavy Polish eats, get thee down to Big Stash's. You'll pack on the calories, carbs, trans fats and other fantastic artery-clogging substances that you should only indulge once in a blue moon.

And don't forget - Big Stash's is cash only.

As the story goes, Stash came over from the Ukraine with something like two dollars and started this restaurant many years ago.  I have been going here since I was a child and occasionally get lunch from here as it is only a few blocks from my business.
The only things worth going here for are kielbasa, pastrami on rye sandwiches and beer.  My father swears by the roast beef sandwich but since I'm not really into roast beef I can't vouch for it.  The rice pudding is pretty tasty.  Draft beers can be had for $1.25 and the beer selections are standard.
As for the ambiance, it has a very retro feel.  Food is ordered at the counter and is basically cafeteria style.  The service is good but the ladies behind the counter have a very heavy, brooding, eastern european attitude.
All in all, it's a good place for lunch and a beer.  For dinner I'm sure you can do better.
