5.17.13 The décor was woodsy? I'm not sure how to describe it, there were birds on the ceiling, antler chandelier, shooting game at the end of the bar and drinks served out of a mason jar. This is a laid back type of a bar and most of all their drinks were super duper strong. I came here twice and tried at least four drinks and ack, it was hard to swallow. I guess for some people it's a good thing but for someone like me I prefer to enjoy my drink but wasn't able to. I have probably ordered the wrong drinks. Other people seem to like their drinks so I'll leave as that..
The next time I order I will say "On the weak side please" LOL.
Evil is what you make it. I'm certain Bloohound is the devil in disguise.
Both times I've stopped in for a drink, I leave totally wasted and satisfied. The bartenders are really friendly and answer all my annoying questions. Drinks are very strong and tasty.
I would recommend the Recoil, New Fashioned and the Gimlet.  Tuesday's are great  because it's slow but Thursday's are great too, even though it's packed.
I've been here a few times now and I have to say - each time has been met with a good evening. Â The last time I stopped in was during happy hour on a Thursday, and enjoyed the cuffs and buttons cocktail. Â We found an open stool at the bar, placed our orders, had a few sips, turned around and found an open table. Â Moments later a tiny dog was in the bar, and then a huge great Dane. Â If only one had been a bloodhound.
It's dark, laid back and riddled with savory specialty drinks.
Awesome bar, great for happy hour and I can bring the puppy! Their specialty cocktails are yummy, especially anytihing with tequila in it. Â The bartenders are cool and friendly, and theres usually a mellow crowd in there. They have buck hunter, which is kinda the greatest game ever.....a pool table, and they're next to one of my favorite thai restaurants in the city.
Review Source:This place is my local stomping ground. My favorite bar in the area. Before they gutted the interior and re did the whole place, it pretty much sucked. Now however, it's awesome. Great alcohol selection, reasonable prices. Staff is hella friendly. They've got a pool table and some legit arcade games. Also has a juke box which is always a plus. The crowd is highly diverse. You've got your blazin hot marina type girls that get all decked out. And you've also got your tattooed and pierced hipster chicks rocking a bad haircut and hoodies. Either way, everyone gets along, and creates a super chill vibe that pretty much everyone can dig. Highly recommended.
Review Source:I'm a sucker for a good theme. Bloodhound, you're doing it right.
Drinks in mason jars are adorably rustic, but also tasty. Nice beer selection and the ginger cocktail is delightful.
Antlers all around and Big Buck Hunter are the perfect amount of kitsch. Bartenders are really friendly and the clientele is pretty polite. You likely won't have your toes stomped on, your ears assaulted by drunks, or your night ruined by overcrowding rowdiness.
Bottom line: Great location and just a great little bar. I'll definitely be back.
Great bar in SOMA. I love the decor and space here. It reminds me a little bit of Churchill in The Castro. The crowd is well mixed and the drinks are strong. They have cider here so I was happy about that. Cocktails were a bit on the pricey side.
And if you like lard, you can have some pork rinds with your adult beverage.
Gather some friends for a fun night and include this on your hop around the city.
PLEASE BRING BACK THE MARIN BREWING COMPANY BEER, ESPECIALLY THE MOUNT TAM!
Sorry, that was my favorite beer there and I miss it! That's the only reason this isn't five stars, because Bloodhound is one of the best bars in my backyard. Any place can have a bar, but what separates great bars from the rest are the people they attract, and damn if Bloodhound doesn't attract some of the best in the city.
I'm new in town, so that means a lot of bar-crawling alone and I've been offered cupcakes, been swapping travel stories - even had someone I'd never met stop me as I left to give me her phone number. The bartenders are chatty and know all the regulars, and they can mix up a great cocktail (their Sazerac is my favorite) when your favorite beer disappears from the taps. This is a great first or last stop on your night out, to shoot some pool, chat up some new people, and Da Beef is just down the street for some great Chicago dogs late into the night.
Strong, delicious cocktails (we tried the Vesper and the Bloodhound), and my minature schnauzer is allowed to hang with me inside, on the couch, while I enjoy the wonderful surroundings.
Crowd was just the right size on the Thursday night around 11. Not too packed, lively, and everyone full of smiles and good company. :)
I haven't written up my San Francisco trip reviews yet, mainly because they would all be glowing but I have to talk about our experience here. Â It is a dive bar close to where I am staying that yelp pointed out and I was excited to try. Â Good beer selection? Nice whiskey cocktails? Funky dive bar decor? I was all about it.
Unfortunately we got treated to the worst service Ive ever gotten at a bar. Â After announcing a premature closing time we were singled out from the other patrons still finishing and rudely asked to leave. Â We tried to finish our drinks and a friend asked why they were closing early and the bouncer just took his drink and told him he was done. Of course I was like...what the hell man and was then threatened to have my drink taken away. Â We were flabbergasted but all the the bartender did was chuckle and say he said they were closing.
Never gotten such rude service and they were clearly just amused at how upset it made us and could not care less. Â Thought this bar would be right up my alley but it has been the worst experience of my vacation. Â I would stay away unless you are okay with a place that would treat its customers so poorly.
This place delivers on decor. It has a rustic cabin vibe and has a mesmerizing ceiling (it has birds painted on it). I went to Bloodhound one day after work, so I wasn't surprised to see the bar filled with a bunch of young professionals.
I ordered the Pisco Punch, which was served in a mason jar (which, from what I could tell, all the drinks are). Dear heaven on earth, the Pisco Punch was DELICIOUS. When I go to a new  bar I usually try at least two drinks and never repeat an order. However, the Pisco Punch was so good that I couldn't  help myself and ended up ordering it twice.
I will be back!
GET THE RECOIL (Bulleit, ginger beer, elderflower, lime). So tasty. I like this spot, but minus stars for the delirious bartender that thought we underpaid him. 2 drinks for $18, so we gave him a 10 dollar bill, 5 dollar bill, and five 1 dollar bills, and for some reason he thought we gave him two 5 dollar bills and four 1 dollar bills. When we explained it to him, he told us to 'get out of here'... ridiculous. Huge turn off that made me want to write this review.
Review Source:I spent a good couple hours in this drinking establishment playing pool and enjoying a few beers. This should be an item on everyone's bar-hopping list.
The highlight of my experience here was this. When I was getting ready to hop to the next bar, this Asian guy outside named Petey said something along the lines of, "you guys can't leave, we're going to take a shot right now." We all walked back into the bar, he threw down his jacket, and began to barback to earn 6 shots of tequila. Apparently he works with the bartender at another bar and he was helping him run the show for a little bit to get the shots for free. We found a table while he was doing his thing and 10 minutes later Petey brought us 6 shots on the house--made possible by his hard work of picking up glasses and stocking shelves. We hung around for another 30 minutes talking about the rigors of life and New Years Eve. This was a moment where a nice person did a nice thing. This man deserves a good break in life.
At any rate, this is probably now one of my favorite dive bars to hang around in SOMA. That night, we ate at The Chieftain Irish Pub, went to the Tempest Bar (another awesome dive bar), then spent most of the night at Bloodhound. This was a fun battle plan that night. I thought about the Bloodhound Gang (band) when my friend was initially telling me about this place.
I actually like this place more than the rating indicates. Â Drinks are good (namely the whiskey-based cocktails) and the decor is pretty cool.
I guess the lack of stars might be an impact of its popularity since the two times I've been there I've found it to be insanely crowded, ridiculously hot and it takes a long time to get drinks. Â The tough life of a popular bar I guess.
I have to admit, this is a really neat bar. It has the hunter vibe and birds painted on the ceiling...and they served my drink, The Recoil, in a mason jar! There's a hunting video game inside and a pool table as well. I came on a Friday night with a friend from out of town...oh man, it was packed, as we had expected. We had to squeeze our way through the crowd to get inside and to the bar. The drink was really strong (to me...I'm a lightweight though). I guess it was worth the price...I had to have my friend help me finish it so I could be sober enough to help my other drunk friend later that night.
Definitely a great scene to have some fun and meet people on a night out with friends. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves! No one was rude to me as I was trying to squeeze my way through the crowd. People also hung up their coats along the wall...I guess people are pretty trusting here with their belongings.
If you find the scene too crazy for you, you can also hop next door to Raven Bar. The scene there is more calm...Edgar Allen Poe theme.
Things I Like To Do Here:
1. Get down with the jukebox.
2. Drink the fabulously tasty New Fashioned.
3. Rock out on the pool table.
4. Get embarrassed at Buck Hunter (in a bar decorated like a hunting lodge).
Basically, Bloodhound is a good bar. I'd write more, but Bloodhound seems to always be our 3rd or 4th stop, and it gets a bit hazy.
I think it's safe to say that I was a little light on the nuances of Big Buck Hunter before I stepped into Bloodhound last night: consider that a situation resolved thanks to compadres from Portland and Brooklyn who proceeded to blast away at everything on that screen like so many drive-bys. There's quite a bit of shooting going on in what appears to be Montana. Just sayin'.
Bloodhound is by all accounts a cozy by way of hip spot to nab a cocktail or brew, and as a professed beer nut I was only too happy to explore what they're pouring these days. In the end I settled for a North Coast Pranqster and a Sierra Nevada Holiday IPA. Tasty. Waitstaff was quick with a pour -- and if I were around more often, great place to catch a game and a cold one, natch.
This place is pretty sure. Â It's not the best place to go for a drink, but it gets the job done when you're in SOMA. Â Nothing to write home about though in my book.
The drinks here in my experience are not very good-they are strong enough, but they never taste as good as some other places. Â When I go to a chill bar like this, I want my drinks to be a little tastier cause I'm not getting wasted to drown out the taste)
The sitting area in the front is very nice and comfortable...great for a late night drink with friends or a date.
The decor of this place is out of this world. It's got a kinda rustic vibe that is hip beyond comparison. This place might be too cool for me. Anyways, the vibe is amazing and the drinks are rather interesting. It was kinda fun trying each one, but beware of the ginger one. If you've ever had chinese medicine, its kinda like that.
My only downside is that it was ridiculously crowded. Maybe because there was a game on TV or maybe because it was a Friday night and everyone needed to get a drink. Either way, I would come back. Hands down.
Selection is medium-to-extensive, and powerful
Vibe is tight
Music is great
I made my way here on a Tuesday night not long ago and made a pretty full night of it - an outstanding choice, if I do say so myself. Â As I first walked in, Amanda offered assistance and we immediately got into a fine chat about the region's beers, the immediate local neighborhood, and some East Coast musings, as well. Â She was generous with the samples and spot-on with her recommendations - a pleasure to speak with. Â Later on, her compadre Rudy (who invents cocktails) came in and mixed up a Smoky Old-Fashioned for me, which was most excellent. Â
Everyone else is right about the dark atmosphere and hunting lodge-chic. Â Expect it, revel in it, and that's that - it's cool and not overdone. Â On this specific night, the darkness was actually broken up by a Presidential motorcade hustling through town that bathed Folsom in red and blue flashes for about ten minutes as the advance team blocked entry and exit, and our Homebrewer-In-Chief sped past. Â We, the fair patron citizenry spilled out onto the sidewalk for a look-see (and some for a smoke). Â Then, as that broke up, we all returned inside the bar to polish off our beverages. Â
This place is great. Â I try to do new things every time I visit San Francisco, but I have a feeling I'll have a hankering to make this a repeat stop in future. Â Love it.
Went here with friends for the first time last night.
No cover on a Friday night which is nice. It was dark and loud, the music was all over the place. I couldn't quite put my finger on a theme for the bar.
Hipsters galore, a specialty drink menu, an almost-old-west theme, but with a mix of salsa, hip hop and disco music playing...
I would def go back again, I had a great time.
Oddball little bar that, at least on Saturday night, was packed full of hipsters.... loud as hell and twice as crowded! Seems to be going for some kind of "redneck" theme judging by the wooden decor and the "big game hunter" arcade game.
We also got jostled a fair amount due to the packed nature of the place.
That said, the beer was tasty and the bartenders were very helpful when I went back in to try to recover my sunglasses, even offering to call me if they found them. And it is at this point that I have to be thankful for the hipsters and their boney... selves, as a dude managed to sit in the chair where my sunglasses had fallen out without touching them at all! Good thing I didn't lose them in an Applebee's...
Fun hipsterish bar in a slightly odd location in SOMA, but it all works out. As others have mentioned the décor is designed to engender feelings of being in a hunting lodge or a trapper's cabin, which is a kind of entertaining for a neighborhood where you're more likely to find an Aeron chair showroom. But as I said, it all works out.
Not a huge selection of beers, but they have a good selection of spirits and good bartenders. I would also like to note that they have bartenders willing to serve you so you won't feel like you're invisible when it gets a bit busy.
I had a Hendrick's g&t, and I was pleased to see they use Fever Tree tonic by default. I then tried the "new fashioned" which was a nice drink as well. Not quite as good as the truffled old fashioned at Canon in Seattle, but it was still quite good.
Fell in love instantly with the decor. Made me regret texting all my friends about this awesome new bar I found by serving me the worst mojito of my life. Regained my trust when another bartender made me a drink and told me he would make me a new one if I didn't like the first one. QUIT PLAYING GAMES WITH MY HEART.
Also is this a gay bar because if it isn't then it should be.
You know, its really the experience that determines how well you like the place from the first impression. It was my first time we decided to go to a bar out in SOMA. When I heard bloodhound, I imagined a grungy dark and divey bar. I was oh so wrong.
The place is barely lit, the atmosphere was buzzing with people who looked like hipsters. Awesome! I looked up at the bird painted ceiling. Pretty cool!
Drinks were okay, I would come more so for the atmosphere.
I always find myself coming here for any reason.
I've gone once a week for the past 3 weeks now. I always get a new fashion and I am never disappointed.
It not too loud in there so it's an awesome place to go on a date there. Light music in the back ground. TVs and a pool table if you aren't interested in talking.
DOG FRIENDLY!
Most likely I'll be there next weekend. Oh wait i'll be out of town
:(
I love me some Bloodhound.
Nice low-key spot. Rustic, hip space reminiscent of a hunting lodge; reclaimed wood tables, deer antlers and a pool table in the back. Look up and you'll see birds painted on the ceiling. Fantastic. Lots of seating available. Bartenders are friendly.
Great selection of beer on tap. Drafts served in mason jars. $5 Old Speckled Hen! Â Wonderful whiskey selection. For cocktails, I recommend the Recoil or the New Fashioned, both bourbon drinks.
Dog friendly! Awesome.
