So to start. BBC has the BEST bagels I have ever had anywhere in the entire world (and I've had them in, among other places, NYC, Chicago, Vienna, Budapest, Paris, Seattle). Â It's a college town so of course some of the staff can be....college students...ie, don't give a crap and screw up orders/look less than pleased to be there.... but the great bagels and schmears more than make up for this. Â I was addicted to their bagels...and really it's only some of the staff..most of them are perfectly fine. Â I really miss them. Â I made a point to go back there when I was in town.
Review Source:They boil these bagels and cook them to perfection. Â Bialy, bagel sandwiches, and spreads are all very fresh and done just right. Â I love the jalapeno bagel with the jalapeno spread and a coke zero as well as peach Snapple. Â This will beat that stomach growl from your hungover induced fast. Â One of the best bagels I've ever had and most New Yorkers would admit it.
Review Source:Pretty good bagels, but there aren't a lot of options in town. They do have a lot of bagel flavor varieties though, which puts it ahead of some more commercial places. The service is usually dismal, but the kids who work there seem young and probably aren't getting paid much, so who can blame them. If you just crave a nice warm bagel, this is the spot. The inside is pretty gross, so I recommend outdoor seating if it's nice.
Review Source:Bagels themselves are very tasty and there is a large variety in bagels and smears. Â I don't recommend the sandwiches as some of veggies tasted less than fresh. Â The coffee drinks are absolutely horrible - definitely go elsewhere. Â The staff is fairly unfriendly, especially for a bagel shop. Â Gist - the bagels are maybe 4/5 stars, but otherwise this place is disappointing.
Review Source:Great place for breakfast, lunch, or a coffee break in Bloomington. The bagels are always fresh and the schmeres are fantastic. I recommend the spinach or the artichoke gouda (to die for).
In terms of bagels, I usually get the asiago cheese because it is perfectly melted on top and oh so good.
They do a great job catering as I have ordered them many times for a lunch or breakfast meeting. They always get the order right and are on time.
And the lox is amazing.
If you are in bloomington and haven't been here, you are seriously missing out!
I ate here every Sunday for 3 years. The only time I missed was when I was too sick to drag myself out of my room in the middle of January so you can imagine how much I love this place. I'm from Chicago and we have pretty good bagel places here but I still miss and crave BB often. From their Lotsa Lox to their croissants to their temptingly delicious black and white cookies, I don't recall ever having anything I didn't enjoy immensely  there.
Their cookies are HUGE and always baked just right, as are their scones, s'mores bars, muffins and just about every other baked good that comes out of their ovens.
The bagels are awesome and over-sized. They remind me a lot of NYC bagels.
The actual restaurant area is super cute with pictures of customers posing with bagels at different landmarks and in different places all around the world. They feature different artist's artwork on the walls and there's always a little vase with some sort of seasonal flower on each table.
Staff is friendly enough; it's the kind of place where you order, grab your food and sit down to eat or take your food elsewhere.
Basically, this place is amazing and I miss it dearly :).
BBC has a few things that are awesome. Two of these things are seasonal pumpkin cream cheese, and their artichoke-gouda cream cheese. Another is the red pepper cream cheese. Their locations are also pretty convenient (for me).
Service is pretty good and I like that they have trivia questions where for a correct answer, you win a wooden nickel good for a free bagel.
The thing that BBC has that is not awesome, are their bagels, and that's why they get 3 stars. Really it's more like 3 and a half. Â I mean, the bagels are fine. But you can get better bagels at the Bakehouse. Also, whenever I ask for the bagels to be toasted, they're more like "lightly warmed." You cannot, however, get the awesome artichoke gouda cream cheese at the Bakehouse. Sometimes in this life you have to make choices. This is one of them.
I just can't get enough! You look at my debit card, and it's so many BBC purchases.
Really good service, a good amount of locations. Fast! Delicious! My favorite has become the lox sandwich on an everyseed bagel. Also has great coffee, and a good atmosphere if you want to spend a little while checking the internets and savoring your sandwich.
BBC has ruined me for bagels. Â The cheap ones you get at a grocery store or a continental breakfast just don't hold up. Â Granted I've never been to New York, but it's hard to imagine them being any better. Â They've got any type of bagel you want (I really like the asiago cheese ones) and any schmear (creamcheese spread) (I'm a big fan of the lox schmear). Â If you don't want that you can get a bagel dog, or a bagel sandwich with loads of fresh toppings, or any number of bialys and baked goodies. Â They're really a B-town institution.
Review Source:Yes I love Bloomington Bagel, it's pretty quick and convenient for coffee and a bagel on my way to class.
I love all the different delicious schmears and spreads and the lox....wow.... it isn't healthy but it is tasty. They have lots of toppings from cheeses to spinach and olives and you can basically create whatever you're in the mood for.
The only downside for me is that the bagels are always a bit too hard for me even though they are made at the store fresh daily.
pretty good bagels. not the best i've had, not the worst. their every seed bagel gets 4 1/2 stars, 5 stars if you add egg, pepper jack cheese, and avocado (i LIVED on those things in undergrad.) only problem: i am really picky about having a perfect amount of salt and pepper on my eggs, and half the time they don't put any on...and they don't leave shakers out...so then you have to badger the workers while there's a long line and you feel like satan. and then sometimes the avocado isn't ripe, and that is a very heartbreaking thing indeed. overall: good for a quick lunch or snack in between classes.
Review Source:Ahhhhhhh. I love this place. Yummy fresh bagels, done almost anyway you like 'em (I enjoy the sausage & egg, 10x better than most places), cookies, a wide selection of beverages, and salads. Â Far more from what you would expect. Grab a cup of joe, a bagel, and a newspaper and head to the outside seating to relax, you won't regret it.
Review Source:Awesome place! The bagels are warm and fresh. It definitely shows they aim for quality ingredients.
They have a long list of custom bagel sandwiches and very cute and friendly servers. A tip of the hat to the manager that picks them out. I think he may have a thing for tan blonds.
Oh and it's cheap. This is definitely a stop I make frequently.
If you've never had bagels before, you may think this place is amazing. Other than that its bland bagels and nothing special.
Dea - I'm not sure where you get your bagels but I don't think I had a bagel here that compared to a bagel in NYC. And to Shelly I'm from California and bagels back home are significantly better as well.
The only decent bagel place in Bloomington. Not that that's saying anything amazing but they are fresh, locally made bagels. I'll be honest, I never tried anything but the bagels here but never heard amazing things about anything else. However, if you are in Btown and craving some carbs, there are far worse places you could stop in then Bloomington Bagel.
Review Source:"Just take me to bbc....pleaasese I need bbc"
Best bagel outside of Manhattan! Thats it, thats all you need to know. They boil em and schmeeere em! I ask all my friends coming back home from Bloomington to "please bring me BBC". They have an asiago and artichoke schmere that is out of this world. They miss out on the 5th star because things like soups and some of their baked goods are not that great. Also, they need some sort of combo meal for lunch. You can easily walk out of BBC with a $15-20 tab just for lunch which is a little outrageous if you ask me, at least for bagels in southern Indiana! If you're in Bloomington, and you wanna make $20 bucks... message me, I'll put in an order and meet you in Manhattan with your money, Oh God I miss BBC in Btown!
The Bagels are good, but definitely not great. Â Everything else they do is mediocre to bad. Â Stay away from the chicken and the tuna salads, unless you like fakey salad dressing like Miracle Whip. Â Everything is really straight from the Sysco truck. Â Behind the counter there may be a kichen, but there is no soul.
I went here a lot, but just stick to the bagels and coffee.
I'll give them an extra star for being good to the wider Bloomington community through sponsoring lots of arts stuff!
I really wish that I could score the bagels and then everything else separately. The BBC makes some of the best bagels outside of New York (that merits a five-star in my book), but other things are hit and miss and some of the special bagels fall into the miss category.
Plain fair like the sesame, poppy seed, onion, and, of course, plain bagels are fantastic. They're properly chewy and don't need to be toasted, though they can be to nice effect. I am willing to ignore mild heresy such as the sunflower seeds on the everyseed bagel and tolerate the outright blasphemy of cinnamon raisin bagels, because it's none of my business what other people do in the privacy of their own mouths. Inspired by what must have been a transient ischemia, I made the mistake of trying the pretzel bagel which replicated faithfully the flavor you would get from burning a handful of snack pretzels.
I am opinionated on acceptable adulterations to my cream cheese and frankly it's a short list. I don't bother anymore with anything but plain cream cheese. However, if you have perverse predilection towards fruity or savory flavored cream cheeses, there are plenty to sate your baser appetites.
For lunch I have been known to have a bagel dog with sauerkraut and mustard. It hits the spot and the dog is kosher, but a bagel is an odd home for a hot dog due to its chewy rigidity. Though a soft bun is better, I'll admit that I willingly participated and enjoyed my role in this farce.
What rips me in half about the BBC is that the coffee is awful, foul, bitter, worse than from a gas station, and barely drinkable even for a caffeine addict like me. I don't know if it's a complaint or a mercy that they are frequently out of one or more of the various flavors they offer. Normally, a great restaurant with a poor offering would still be great, but coffee is so integral to breakfast for me that I feel forced to either drink terrible coffee or take my bagel somewhere else to get a complete breakfast. If I could get Soma coffee at the BBC, it would probably get a five.
Aside from the staples, the BBC has some great little finds, like the hamantaschen. I don't know if they were just around for Purim, but I could eat my weight in hamantaschen and the ones at the BBC are exemplary.
Really great bagels. Â It's sad when a place in the midwest has way better bagels than anywhere in DC. Â Freshman year I used to go to the 3rd street location (not there anymore) and get a whole bag of bagels there were about to throw away!
The bagel sandwiches are delicious and cheap!
OH. MY. DAD. I cannot believe this place is on yelp and I have the chance to declare my fairly obvious love for the GREATEST bagel place on earth.
So. I worked here for three years when I was in school, and during that three years, I ate here almost every day. Free food on the job and half-price off duty made it a staple. It's amazing. It's fabulous. Home-made bagels, declicious and varied cream cheeses blended there on the spot and in addition to the best bagels in the world, they also have the best cookies. Not too bad for Bloomington, IN.
And I think I love this place the most when I roll in slightly hungover while visiting Btown, and I start to order my most fantastic creation ever and I watch the eyes of the bagel preparer pop out of their heads. I'll share:
Cinnamon raisin bagel, scooped and toasted twice. You wanna leave room for all the good stuff you're putting inside, so don't hate on the scooping. In one half, get horseradish, chicken salad, spicy mustard, honey, tomatoes, onions and a slice of swiss cheese. Send that shiz thru the conveyor oven.
In the other half, add artichoke gouda cream cheese (seriously the best cream cheese of al time), honey and onions. Leave the two halves open faced, throw a pickle in the middle, and BAM. You are in heaven.
Also when I make them prepare this bagel, I have them make my friend Sam's as well since she gets basically the same thing. Luckily, they have extremely high turnover there because if I asked someone to make that bagel twice, their head would explode. Except for Dawn. She always has my back.
Also also, the shrimp corn bisque is AMAZING even if it's a premade soup. Well, I could go on forever about the awesomeness of this place, but I think I need to tone it down a notch and I'm pretty sure most people stopped reading this review after the first paragraph. So that's it. For now.
Not a big fan... All the talk on campus is the this place makes great bagels. Â So, when midterms rolled around, i decided lets have a morning review "party" with bagels. Â After finding their number online, i saw that they delivered. Â I called (at 8)and told them i needed 20 odd bagels for this study group. Â I was told that i needed to buy 40 some bagels for them to deliver. Â Well at this point i figured, what the heck..if these bagels are so good, ill just give out a few extra bagels out. Â I was told that my fresh would be where i needed them by 9. Â At 10 the bagel man showed up and we all decided to take a break and eat. Â We ripped open the bag to find that some of the bagels seemed to be a day old or longer. Â Being college students we said whatever and continued to eat. Â I might try BBC again, because everyone still says these are great bagels. Â But, in general, the bagels just didn't taste that great to me. Â It was more on the hard side and was pretty disappointed with the three types i tried. Â Maybe i just had day old bagels or perhaps just didn't order on the right day.
Review Source:Sue makes the best bagels in town. The artichoke gouda schmear is wow, to die for awesome. Totally unique, and I crave it every time I go back.
This is a serious bagel place. They actually boil their bagels and they are delicously chewy. Better than most bagels in NYC!
Also, it's cheap. Get lunch for under $5 (a bagel/cream cheese, and a drink) and chill with some free wireless internet.
I love BBC and when I come back to Bloomington I almost always take a dozen home. Â Maybe they're "nothing special" to someone who has constant access to a decent bagel, but for me, they're great. Â Tons of flavors of bagels and shmears and other items (muffins, breads...) that are all delicious. Â Everything is baked on site, which means that your bagel is always fresh. Â
I also come for their fresh made Challah around the holidays - mmmm.... The BBC is definitely one of my favorite stops when I make my way back to IU.
