This place is such an interesting Dive Bar in the Vale. It is in a strip mall which always made me avoid it, but when I was drug here one night I fell into it. All the women are amazing bartenders, last baseball season spent many a Monday/tue night with Michelle. The owner is super awesome and gives proceeds to local animal causes. It is fore sure a local dive bar that comes ali

The Blue Max is cool. I'm used to paying for overpriced drinks at the clubs so the prices here are super awesome.

It took a few times for me to get comfortable with this bar but once I did it became second nature to me.  It's a cozy place to chill and the bartenders are cool.

They have karaoke on Fridays and Saturdays.  There are few regulars that are pretty good singers.

The BEST dive bar around! This place may not look like much from the outside, but don't let that fool you - Blue Max is full of character. From the ambiance to the bartenders to the eclectic mix of karaoke masters, this place is a great time. Cheap drinks, good music, and lots of laughs from the staff. If you know how to have a great time, the Blue Max will be right up your alley. Best part: Mama Sue! Everyone's "mom" is a sweetheart! She's the main reason to keep you coming back! Cheers :)

***AVOID THIS PLACE***The bar tender today had such a piss poor attitude .... From the moment we walked in we could tell we weren't welcome...my 41 year old boyfriend was carded and she was very rude when refusing to accept his UK driving licence and then ignored us when he asked 'do I look under 21?'...can I post  -10 stars?

I'd have to agree with most of the reviews -- its a great dive bar - fun place on a Friday night for Karaoke -  bartenders are cool - KJ seems to have a grip on an even fair rotation, great selection of music, crowd is super cool... the few times I've been here my time has been enjoyable except for my last visit which  was kinda weird. My friend and I stopped by for a quick sing before we headed off to a party. As soon as we walked in there was a lady sitting by the DJ that truly defines the word curmudgeon. She was like a vampire sucking out good energy... or at least try to.  I'm not sure who she was, but she seemed to have some association with the bartender and DJ...Anyhow, never did I speak a word to her, but her stares and comments about myself and my friend were heard and obviously she was judging us.   It's just not worth it to me to even try and carry a conversation with people who have that type of energy..especially if you don't know me!! . Its too bad but luckily I'm an open minded person and know better to even try and lower myself to that type of behavior, however, next time, she may not be that lucky and won't have a nice person like myself who will think before she speaks, even under the influence. All in all, this lady won't stop me from frequenting this place, but due to her severe coldness, I do have to remove a star.  I was still able to get my sing on, even with her hard, cold I wanna stab you stares!! EEEEEEEEEEKKKK !!!!

This place is so much fun.

Its the perfect place if you want to get on stage and sing karaoki with your friends

They have a large catalog of songs to choose from

You can even read the lyrics off the tv as you sing.

Plus they give you a mic which you can use on stage

i'm soooo not a dive bar kind of a girl... but i did have a fun time here.  went with some friends to celebrate a bday (bday girl was dying for some karaoke).  crowd seemed pretty friendly.  let's be real, we sucked big time, and nobody threw stuff at us, so i'd say they were good people!  drinks were decent, and they kept them coming.  good stuff :)

This review really only covers Karaoke Fridays, as my friends and I call our almost weekly Friday nights at the Blue Max. (Take it to the maxxxx on a Friday and you just might hear me jam out to "Wanted Dead or Alive" or "Tainted Love." Oh, boy!)

You never really know what you're going to get from a Friday at the Blue Max. One week it might be bumpin' with fun groups of people who are quick to sing and quick to get up and dance along (seriously!) with someone else's song. Other weeks, it will be a sparse crowd of people mostly talking amongst themselves while others semi-awkwardly sing on stage. The good weeks are really good and at least the less good weeks allow you to practice some tunes for the next time there's a crowd. (Seriously, I still can't believe I sort of got into doing karaoke. I was always the one too cool for school who'd sit there while other friends sang.)

Anyway, despite the varying crowds, Anthony, the KJ, is really nice and does a good job of keeping a rotation going, and he's got a really good selection of songs. Susie, the bartender, is a little surly, but warms up a bit (just a bit) the more you go in. Drinks are cheap ($7 for a shot of Jameson and a crappy beer). Cash only, though there's an ATM ($2 fee) in the bar. There's plenty of room for groups to sit/gather around a table, which is a plus.

First time here last night. What a gem! Great karaoke guy, huge selection, nice normal people -- no creepy people. Drinks are cheap and good. Will def be back.

The German bartender is a sweetheart. Great place to chuck down some drinks or ten. Cost is decent. ATM in the bar. Pool table, TVs. Good drinks. Good crowd. Will be back for more.

Came here for karaoke on a Friday night. It's really well lit for a dive bar, so if you're stage-shy, better have an extra drink or four to calm your nerves before belting out your tune of choice.  On that note, they have a huge song selection to choose from so there's really no excuse not to sing.  Great bar, good drink prices, and really friendly crowd.

I would like to start off with my one major problem: cash only. This is the ONLY reason I can't go here regularly. I am a 21st century girl. My pay is direct deposited and I live on plastic (it's fantastic).

That said, I loved it. Great dive bar. Relaxed and comfortable with a great regular crowd and a lot of interesting people passing-through. The bartender made a helluva kamikazi cocktail (my tester drink at most bars) and the other bartender had just gotten off work and was happily playing dice with some regulars for loose change.

It was clean-ish, but... everything I wanted in a dive bar, save payment options. Le sigh.

    GREAT DIVE BAR!

I've only ever been to Blue Max on Friday or Saturday nights, but I've never been disappointed.  I just love Karaoke, and the guy who does it there has the BEST selection.

Great crowd, awesomely cheap drinks, and Annette is a very sweet bartender.

One of my favorite karaoke spots. Bartender and KJ are awesome. The crowd gets a bit much for me on Friday nights.

    A really pleasant sports dive.

Wanna watch the game somewhere cozy?  Grab some food, and plant yourself at this bar.  You'll have a good time with the patrons and staff, while watching the game on one of their TVs.  Just a really pleasant place to watch a game.

This place has been designated as my second home! Drinks are priced very resonable and served by the friendliest staff, patrons are all great people, and the karaoke on Friday nights is a riot. If you are looking for a down to earth atmosphere with a lot of fun and no drama, a fair amount of televisions for your sports fix, and a good mixed drink or beer then I would highly recommend this bar.

My favorite place!  Mama Sue! I love you! I love this bar!

When my friends and I first moved down here to Sunnyvale, CA from Oregon, we came to this bar and they treated us as if we'd been going there for years. Now we make a point to stop in at LEAST once a week to say hello and get a few drinks :)

Great place, awesome drinks (try an adios mother f*cker... or 3:), had a lot of fun doing karaoke there, but due to (many) complaints about my horrible performances, I'm no longer welcome here.  I told them I'd get kicked out when I first walked in, it took 3 visits but yea, the inevitable happened.  I got kicked out like I've been kicked out of every other karaoke bar (I'm actually really really proud of this). But I did have a great time, and to those people that complained about me getting up on stage and singing terribly with curse ridden commentary about the songs I was singing, and forced them to 86 me, I only have one thing to say:  I really hope someday you'll find something to complain about that really matters in the grand scheme of life, because if you keep letting the petty things bother you, you're not going to live a very rich and fulfilling life.  Warm regards and best wishes to the staff,
    Duff

Beer here is always ICE COLD!  I often come here when waiting for a cheesesteak next door.  Annette is always nice to talk to, very friendly, and a good bartender.

    Cold Beer is GOOOOOOD!

This place is right by my work so I come here sometimes with co-workers.

This is the place if you want to do karaoke and have fun! It's mostly an "older crowd" bar (from what I noticed), saloon type, but very welcoming. The beers are cheap, and on Friday nights, it can get kind of crowded. The people have no shame with their horrible singing, everyone just has fun with one another. I'll stick to the nights with co-workers here. Oh yeah, the bartender is a real sweetheart!

Take it to the max!  that's how every night is at the blue max.  this bar is great.  it's a total dive, but the patrons are friendly and the drinks are cheap and strong, as is the norm for dive bars.  plus, they have karaoke!!  karaoke nights are the best.  they have a great song selection and the KJ works hard to keep on a rotation.  plus, karaoke nights aren't all that busy, so you're guaranteed to sing a fair amount.  it's just your neighborhood strip mall dive bar, and i love it

Don't get me wrong. Sometimes I like spending an hour getting ready and making the drive up to San Francisco to head to a trendy bar where I teeter in my red stilettos all night. Those nights are normally pretty fun nights.

However, there are nights when I just want an effing DRINK. I want to throw on some Chucks, play pool with my friends, not be so damn concerned with how I look and maybe sing a little karaoke, if the mood so strikes me. (Read "If I've had the right number of shots.") Blue Max is THAT place. Karaoke on Friday nights, cheap drinks, and a pool table in the back. (Plus, no SF hipsters! Hizzah!) Sue, the bartender there most of the time, is a bit of a hard ass at first. Once she sees your face a few times, though, she will joke around with you all night. Some of the best nights out with my friends have been at this bar.

Minus one star for cash only...

Here's my caveat: I only go to the Blue Max on Friday nights for karaoke. And yeah, I'm in "THAT" group, the theatre people who tend to dominate the singing by the end of the night.

That being said, I love Blue Max. I haven't been going there for very long overall, but I really enjoy spending time singing karaoke. Susie is "mom" to everyone and makes sure that no one gets stupid in the bar. Desmond has a fantastic selection of songs, and is quite fair about the rotation. Everyone gets applauded, and some songs become sing-alongs, or the background for a bunch of people dancing in front of the stage. Friday nights are lots of fun for me, and the prices are definitely right.

Came here last night with my husband and three of our buddies after we were through with the downtown Sunnyvale scene. Went in and ordered 2 Heinekens and 3 Jack and Cokes. Bartender said that she wasn't going to serve HIM (pointing at our friend.) I told her thats fine, he IS pretty drunk. Make it 2 Heineken and 2 Jacks. She said that she won't serve HIM either (pointing at my husband.) I said that is fine, make it 1 heineken and 2 Jacks. Then she told me that she can't serve the drinks to me because I may just turn around and give them to my drunk friends and then the bar will be liable for any damages my husband and our friend do to themselves. I didn't argue, we just called a cab and had them take us to the Peacock. It is a lot harder to get cut off from the Peacock.

As for the three stars for this place, I cannot in my conscience dock stars for a bar following the letter of the law, although somewhat overkill. They don't have draft beer here, also. Unless you count Budweiser. Eww.

I wouldn't trade this place for anything.  I can't say enough good things that would truly get across how much I like Blue Max.  I even hesitate to write a review at all of this bar, because I don't want it to get any more busy, but I am going to take a chance here.  I'm pretty sure that if someone went here and enjoyed it, then they're someone I wouldn't mind sitting next to anyway.  I guess dive bars are kind of self-regulating in that regard.

So far I've met some really cool people here, and had some great conversations.  I brought my best friend here from out of town, and he agreed that Blue Max exceeded all hype and expectations that I told him.  Mind you that neither of us bathe, and enjoy eating hot wings while on the toilet - just to give you an idea of why that creep next to you at the bar smells like an ashtray filled with buffalo sauce.

I love this place.  I have had a chance to get to know the owner, "Smitty", and she is a class act that loves her patrons.

In fact, during the Monday Night Football games, she provides All-You-Can-Eat home cooked meals for $4 per person!  This is a great dive bar with nothing but personality.

I am now a regular, cause, "where everybody knows you name, and there always glad you came...."

The Blue Max is everything a local dive bar should be.  Cheap drinks, friendly bartenders who know your name and your drink and a great crowd.  S.E.R.I.O.U.S karaoke folks on a great local crowd.

It's a one-of-a-kind authentic sports bar that really sets it apart from the cookie-cutter places that litter most of Sunnyvale.  Hope to see you there.

Quality drinks at a cheap price!  Monday night football all you can eat dinners. Sunday buffets. Discount Wednesdays! They also have great bartenders that can make a lot of drinks; ask for Suzie. Oh and there is a pool table, dart board, and some video games. They also have an ATM so don't worry about not getting cash before hand. Karaoke on Friday and Saturday. This is a great place that doesn't get too crowded; you won't get hoarse yelling to your friends. Also there is a free birthday drink!

Post 'opening' last night, I went to Blue Max with the cool kids--there's nothing like a few shots to wipe away the pain of tech week...

At any rate, we basically took the place over.  It was quiet enough that we could all chat but not so quiet that it was creepy.  Drinks are DIRT cheap--no joke--which is probably why the bartender was so skeptical of all of our IDs (apparently the ABC busted the place twice already, so she was being extra-careful.  Bring ID backup, just in case) as I'd imagine the bar attracts a barely-legal clientele along with the occasional local.

At any rate, we had a great time--probably because no one decided to try out the prominently-placed karaoke machine--but seeing as it was in a strip mall in freaking SUNNYVALE (which is OMG far from Oakland), I won't be back anytime soon...

This place has the most hardcore karaoke crowd I have ever seen.  Some people clearly try out for American Idol in their spare time, others bring up instruments (WTF?) and if you aren't good you will get no applause.

There is also a whole bunch of trophies for darts and pool on the wall from years past.  Drinks are cheap, $3 for a well and $3.5 for a beer.  Go with some friends and observe the oddity that is... Blue Max!

    ***** OWNER IS LOSER ******

Another bartender canned for no reason.  The owner could give a $hit about this place, and it shows.

The only saving grace is Dennis bringing in his own equipment and keeping the sounds hot and fresh for Karaoke.

New Bartender on Friday night seems like a space cadet - carded everyone - we're all over 30.. ??

Prices used to be reasonable.. but now, only the wells are a good deal. Another down fall is they don't accept credit cards.. and have no modern ATM.... booo.

I know, reading a review for a bar written by someone who doesn't drink is sorta like reading a book about Kuma Satra written by the 40 year-old virgin. Well, I can vouch for this nice, homey neighborhood bar that has several TVs and a huge projection TV for games. They also do karaoke a lot. I come here to watch Warriors games when I can't watch them at home due to kids sleeping, etc.
