Like another poster, I can't comment on the restaurant portion of this place as I've only experienced the "ultra lounge", not the "bistro". :)
Completely unimpressed, there is nothing "ultra" about this place. They started off as an upscale lounge type of place but like do many places in NN, it has quickly spiraled downward. The crowd is classless, tacky and loud, lines to get in are way too long considering what an awful experience awaits you.
Unfortunately NN really doesn't offer many other options for nightlife but I recommend steering clear of this place.
Blurr is a cool little spot in Newport News that prides itself on blurring the lines between how it is defined. Is it a cocktail place? Is it a restaurant? A late bar? Blurr definitely aims for all of these, and also has a nice lunch menu that is too often overlooked by the lunch crowd. Perhaps this owes to its location which is on Pilot House Drive off Jefferson. Truthfully, the food is really good and very reasonably priced. I think this gets overshadowed a bit by its reputation as a great late night hang-out spot. I recommend their Cuban Sandwich--while they didn't quite get the bread right, the flavor-blending concept they nailed.
The late night crowd is an eclectic mixture. Fortunately many of the menu items are still available at this time, and this has made it a good go-to for a late night meal. The music is typically clubby dance music mixed with top 40 hits. On Thursdays they usually have a band, which is a bit hit or miss. Either way, Blurr is a cool spot worth going to.
Blurr is a "Bistro & Ultra-Lounge" in Newport News. It's not a bistro per the actual definition, and I have no idea what an Ultra-Lounge is... and while we're on the matter, I really dislike the name Blurr with two r's. Were the two r's really necessary? Did the somehow make the name cooler than "Blur"? At any rate, the overall ambiance feels a little contrived, but it's not unpleasant. The staff is decent, but the servers do tend to take a while to check back in with their tables, so drink refills can take a while. The food, however, is very good. They have a $5 lunch menu that is great which includes a cuban sandwich and the 'Blurrger'. The fries are extremely good, and the menu is actually quite varied. Oh, the wings are excellent as well. Â They serve everything from burgers, paninis, wraps, salads, nachos, wings, and flatbread pizzas. This place does turn into a club on the weekend so if you're going for dinner you may want to check it out during the week.
