Our favorite place in Fresno to have a micro- beer. Â The owner and "barkeep" is John O'Mera who has been to Ireland many, many times and has great Irish jokes!
Lots of people from the surrounding neighborhood go in after work and have a relaxing drink and a joke or two before going home......FUN!
Been here a few times, and it really is like drinking in a library....A Beer Library! Â The wood panels and soft lighting reminded me of many a pub I visited while in the UK.
The Librarian (John I think?) is a wealth of beer knowledge, and very friendly to talk to. Â Stop in for a pint and make a friend.
Terrific selection with lots of malty options, mostly European. Â My kind of place. Â Enjoyed a delicious Ayinger Celebrator last time I was there.
Hands down the best pub around! I have long looked for an authentic Irish pub within Fresno/Clovis area and have found none. Most don't last long, while others that do turn into a sports bar. At Body in the Bog you get an authentic experience with decor, music and beer. Even the elbow rests at the bar set this place apart from the rest.
Another huge plus is that this place doesn't have TV's on. Nothing sticks in my craw more than a bunch of flatscreens forcing sports or news into your pupils and ear canals. I think there was one nonoperational old TV in the corner somewhere. This encourages an atmosphere of fellowship, with traditional irish songs in the background. The lights are soft and kept dim creating a wonderful ambiance.
John O'Mara is a beer connoisseur and has a vast and seemingly never ending variety of bottles from around the world - with of course a very good selection on tap! Mr. O'Mara has the supernatural ability to just look at you and tell you the exact beer that will suit you best. "Oh? What's that? You're smoking a pipe outside? Why, this scottish ale will be fantastic with the smoke." He never ceases to blow my mind with some new elevation/revelation of heavenly brew. Brilliant, simply brilliant!
God bless the Body in the Bog!
I know that this is not going to be well recieved by my fellow yelpers, but I was "whelmed" by the Body in the Bog. Notice I did not say "over whelmed". Couldn't believe that the patrons were actually bragging to me about how "the game is never on" at the bar. If you want trivia, why don't you watch Jeapardy? Ordered a Stella, and the tender had to go to the back room to find one. Took ten minutes. It felt like I was drinking a beer in the library.
Review Source:It's taken me a long time to find a bar worth going to... nay, a pub worth going to. You see, a lot of times when you go out in Fresno and just want to sit down and enjoy an excellent beer... well, you end up in loud, crowded, dark, uninviting establishments with a very poor selection of beer, liquor, wine, and you also really have to compete to get good service. Coming from the Bay Area, this is just unacceptable. I know Fresno is kind of a college town but this is a large diverse community and some of us have standards. Some of us like to enjoy a high quality beer, and not chug swill. Some of us enjoy quiet company, intelligent conversation. Since when did being at a bar mean beer pong, beer bong, pool, darts, live music, loud music, getting drunk, fraternity mentality.
BiTB is a very special place... I've only been a handful of times as I am truly not a heavy drinker and it can get expensive. But when I drink I want to enjoy a pint... I nurse it, take in the smell, the flavor. With John (owner/operator) you not only get to partake in a very rustic atmosphere that fulfills all of the needs of a beer connoisseur, but you also listen to light classical, jazz, folk, irish music that breaks the silence. Want to be the creepy guy in the corner, cool, nobody will bother you. Looking for conversation? Pull up a stool... nobody around? John has had an amazing life and you owe it to yourself to ask him about himself. Not to mention that every beer John stocks, he can tell you about the company, the ingredients, the brewing style, the history... he is an amazing and fascinating guy!
Your welcome to bring food here, and if your looking for liquor... well that's not this kind of place. This is for beer drinkers only. Sure you can go to BevMo and pick up the same beer and save 50% but then you'll be the loner alcoholic sitting at home playing video games, eating pizza, and just getting drunk. No. Come to BiTB and support local business, and a dying breed. When the Central Valley loses this place, you'll most likely never see anything as unique roll through for years to come.
Closed on Sundays FYI.
Great vibe, great beer selection... one of the two best selections (BC's Pizza would be the other). Â I love the owner. Â Just a great, warm, fun atmosphere without the pressure of being a pick-up joint! Â My favorite bar in Fresno.. by FAR! Â You can bring in/order pizza or any food you like since they don't sell food... just wonderful beers.
Review Source:This place is a great  neighborhood pub.  There is so much beer selection to choose from making this a beer lovers utopia.
I don't recommend going to this place looking to get crazy drunk, but if you just want to go hang out and have a conversation with your friends or your neighbor sitting next to you at the bar and have a couple pints body in the bog is just the place to do so.
Its been a few years, but Im glad to see that this place is back! This place is perfect for just going and having a beer and unwinding at the end of the day. The selection of beers (both bottled and on tap) is amazing. The owner, John, has always made it a point to greet me by name and you don't have to stand around waiting all night just to get served.
Review Source:As hoped, The Body in the Bog is back! Â Had a good time here the other night, and it was all I hoped for in a pub; great beer, great service and great clientele too.
John, the owner, is a wealth of knowledge on all things beer, and he makes for a great experience just in talking to him.
The music is perfect; background noise only...barely notice it. Â So you get to know the people around you. Â And in what would otherwise be a possible uncomfortable silence as you are all sipping your tasty beverages, the music comes through just enough.
Not a pick up joint. Â Not a get drunk quick joint (but if you're willing to take your time...). Â Not a rock out bar. Â Just a great place to sit and enjoy a beer. Â I think I've found my home away from home. Â :-)
I've wondered about this place for awhile--my wife and I often eat sushi next door--but the pub has always been closed.
It reopened in April with the original owner, John. His vision for the pub is simple: sell the beer he would buy. Apparently, John knows good beer because this vision has resulted in a pub with a wide selection (currently 40) of fine beers that would be hard to find at other Fresno establishments.
The selection leans heavily towards UK and Belgian beers with a few high end domestics (mmmm.. Walker Reserve...) on draft.
For my first visit I tried a Chimay Triple-- something I've wanted to try for awhile but have never had the opportunity. John was knowledgeable about the history and characteristics of the beer, served it in the proper goblet and seemed to enjoy helping a customer discover something new.
In the end, that's what sets The Body In The Bog apart. You won't find Bud Light, kamakazis, and dancing, but you'll find a serious beer education and a chance to discover something unique.
Now, if only they served some pub grub...
THE BOG IS OPEN once again!
John, the original owner, is back behind the bar. Â The place was perfect when it first opened, then it slid way downhill with his "Monahan's" partners turned it into a glorified frat boy clubhouse.
Have yet to go there now that's back, but if it's anything like it was in the beginning, it will be a REAL pub with no frills, just a truly global selection of beers, many hard to find, each served in their original brewery glassware, and excellent service from a man that knows beer.
I'll write a review after a couple of visits.
