Oh my heavenly sandwich from God! Â Go for the Healthworks full of sprouts, avacado, cream cheese, turkey slices, on wheat bread. Â The homemade soup is a legacy in this family owned restaurant. Â Dine in or out, they are special and celestial meals cooked and served for over a decade by loving hands.
Enjoy a loaf of bread to take home. Â I can't get enough of the amzing menu here of sandwiches such as the Reuban, or the beef one, etc. Â I have to say freshly made meals, are the way to a happy belly with the freshest fruits and vegetables to fill your warm plate. Â ANd the desserts here need a review of their own that is how marvelous they are made.
Praise the Lord! Â Psalms.
i had a boxed lunch from here catered to a work seminar. i had a turkey and swiss sammie with a brownie, cup of pasta salad, and chips. it took serious restraint to save half the sammie and brownie for lunch the following day. it was my first experience eating lunch from here and the bread was so remarkable i asked the secretary where this glorious place was. i have never had a bread so soft; i wanted to buy a loaf of it really. well it is hallelujah close to work: why anybody goes to ANY of the fast food options in this town when you have local small business winners in the mix which are 200% healthier is beyond me.
i made my way over the following week...
imagine if jimmy johns made a sandwich that actually tasted brilliant... voila bread basket.
i had the "health works": jack cheese, almonds, tomato, sprouts, smoked turkey, cucumber and leaf lettuce and i added avocado. imagine the "beach club" with some real flavor.
i got the 1/2 sammie & 1/2 cup o soup deal... the sammie was so good i almost wish i had the whole thing to devour... and the freshness and fill of it didn't have me feeling guilty at the gym one bit.
they have a pretty savory menu to drool over with a number of guilt free salads, soups, and sammies along with sweet extras like hand dipped shakes, cookies and brownies. i am excited for a healthier option for work lunches on a street over-saturated with fast food heart killers and hip busters.
After being deliberately misled by a group of local ruffians our group eventually found the correct entrance to this little gem, the pride and joy of the local township.
We were promptly seated by the efficient waitstaff, and despite our high expectations from other yelp reviewers were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the sandwiches that we ordered. I personally ordered the garden chicken sandwich, which had a broad variety of textures that tantalized the taste buds. I thought I could detect a hint of cinnamon and bergamot in the rye, which I tried to confirm. Alas i was mistaken. Nevertheless I can only agree with other yelpers and recommend the Bread Basket with enthusiasm.
This the best lunchtime eatery in the area... Â Their hours are only Tues-Fri, 10am-4pm and the lunch hour is usually packed.... Â They do accept pick-ups... Â I have tried nearly everything on their menu and all of it is amazing. Â Some of the nicest staff too! Â Everything here is so fresh and healthy, a rare find for Northwest Indiana. Â HIGHLY recommended! Â I wish I could give it more stars.
Review Source:They definitely need to fix up the exterior. Â I was not convinced this place was even open until after walking inside and smelling delicious bread cooking. Â I fully expected a guy with a toolbelt to walk out of the kitchen and say it was closed.
As I said, the bread smells great. Â Since I can't eat the bread, I stuck with the Cesar Salad sans croutons. Â Pretty good little place.
I wish every lunch restaurant was as good as this. The restaurant is a small, cramped little cafe that doesn't look like much from the outside, but the food is so delicious. Be aware that they are only open during the week (excluding Mondays) from 10-4. They have a pick two menu that consists of a mix and match off of their menu. Like Panera bread, but not mass produced...and much better.
Be ready to potentially wait for a table - this place is high demand but well worth the wiat.
I have been driving past this place for over 20 years and never new it was an eating establishment. Â Pulled in the lot on a Monday one morning and realized they were closed. Â It is only open Tuesday through Friday from 10 to 4. Â
I finally came by during lunch hours with my 4 yr. old for a bite. Â The decor inside is quite bland but it is definitely clean. There are about 6 or 7 tables total but much of the business is also carry-out. Â
They make wheat bread daily and it is available for sale. $1.00 Â for day old bread and $2.50 for same day. Â Yum! Â I ordered a panini and it was huge and magnificent! Â My little one had half a sandwich and he enjoyed it very much. We both had their broccoli cheddar soup and it was delicious!!
If you're lucky to stop in during the limited open hours, you'll be glad that you did!
To reiterate other Yelpers' note: this place is not easy to spot. Â Despite a fairly neat and new looking website, the actual location has nothing more than a generic black-lettered sign visible from the road. Â Come ON, BreakBasket. Â Put a stylized logo up there!
To get the bad out of the way, the service was slow and the server wasn't the least bit friendly. Â She was all-business most of the time, with brief moments of typical waitress-y demeanor. Â We made it clear we hadn't ever been there, and were having some trouble deciding, but she just stood there in awkward silence as we tried to pick our lunches. Â No suggestions, no "I'll give you another minute and come back"; she just stood there. Â It didn't ruin the experience, I guess, but don't go here expecting the typical quick, helpful service that you get at most places. Â They are just there to get the job done, it seemed. Â And considering we only ordered some cold-cut sandwiches, and the place wasn't packed, I don't know why our food took 45 minutes.
The food was great though, especially considering what I normally find around the area for lunch. Â The bread and meat and cheese all tasted and smelled very nice and fresh. Â The menu is a little bit on the small side, but it's a small little restaurant. Â I'd rather them focus on making those dozen or so sandwiches REALLY well (which they do) than expand and become Panera-esque. Â Not that I don't love me some Panera.
Anyway, definitely check this place out for lunch, but go on a day when you have plenty of time, because you might not make it back in time for that 1-o'clock meeting...
the bread basket is one of the few things that i miss about living in indiana. Â their wheat bread is fabulous, which makes their sandwiches even better. Â the crust is firm, but not hard, and the middle is perfectly soft. Â i've probably tried everything on their menu and have never been disappointed. Â the chicken salad is definitely one of my favorites on the menu; in fact, it might be one of my favorite chicken salads ever. Â they use pineapple. Â PINEAPPLE. Â not grapes or cranberries, but PINEAPPLE. Â perfect. Â
i'm also a huge fan of the garden delight; i think cream cheese should be used in sandwiches more often. Â really.
in sum, while hammond's a pretty far drive...and you'll pass dozens of other cafes and restaurants en route...i think it's worth the trip.
If you're driving down Indianapolis in Hammond, and you look at the outside, you don't really expect much but once you pull into the parking lot and get out of the car, the smell of the bread is really intoxicating.
This place was a find for me considering many of the surrounding restaurants looked like grease spots and fast food. Â The food here is fresh and very good! I love their low fat honey dijon salad dressing. Â I don't know how they make it but they should seriously think about bottling that and selling it because it's wonderful. Â The salads and sandwiches are also very good. Definitely worth trying if you like sandwiches and salads.
My husband took me there for lunch and went on and on about how good the food was...a stretch for him because he is so picky...but low and behold...THE BEST SANDWICH OF MY LIFE!!! REALLY...I had a cheesy chicken bacon thing and fell in love again...it's SMALL but perfect for our lunch date...we did wait a bit for the food but it was well worth it...will go back again and again..a REAL SURPRISE FOR HAMMOND!!
Review Source:Hello, food snob here. Â How many places can say home made? Â Well this place can, from its GREAT BREAD to its Hearty Soups. Â Been going here since 1989. Â Has changed a little with new owner, but still good. Â Although the only thing I should say is I MISS THE PARMESAN ROLLS. Â They were the best and probably the only ones around here.
Review Source:This place is easy to pass up. The place does not jump out at you.
Because of local yelpers and their reviews, I just had to try this place out.  Verdict, The sandwiches are amazing! You can really sink your teeth into them. I had the almond chicken sandwich with a side of cheese broccoli soup. Soup needed more broccoli, but the sandwich made up for the soup. Price range just over $6  not bad.  The bread is very good as well  If you are looking for something different and healthy and find yourself in Hammond Indiana.(Courage) Check this place out!  I want to check out the yogurt shakes when I  go back.  This is Hammond's best kept secret!  Thank you local yelpers for pointing this place out!
Hammond is .....well, Hammond. I grew up there & never cared for it, but one of the few things I loved was the gourmet sandwiches & berry yogurt shakes at The Bread Basket on Indianapolis Blvd. I still get cravings for the Thin Swedish even though I no longer eat ham.
This place is a diamond in the rough. If you ever find yourself in Hammond, Indiana ( I am so sorry) then check this place out before you escape.
Such an unassuming little place, such delicious bread, soup, sandwiches and brownies!
Park your car in the lot and inhale the freshly baked bready goodness in the air. Â It actually trumps the NWI pollution! Â That's some powerful baking! ;) Â Wander inside the Bread Basket, take a seat in their country decor dining room and prepare yourself for a really comforting and delightful broccoli cheese soup, or perhaps the tasty and substantial spicy black bean. Â If you have room after that, enjoy a sandwich served on some delicious homemade bread (this is saying something, since I don't really fancy sandwiches or bread in general). Â The Garden Delight is a fantastic veggie sandwich and I have a habit of ordering the almond chicken salad sandwich. Â Salads are solid, other sandwiches are tasty as well and the brownies--ooooh, the brownies are delicious! Â I want one right now! Â Maybe I'll have to plan a trip back home to The Region soon just so I can eat at Bread Basket... Â It's a sweet, comfy spot that offers wonderful, inexpensive fare and I'm proud to have it near my home town!
If Hammond gets a bad name, then surely The Bread Basket makes up for it! I've been going to this kitschy cafe where ladies lunch since I was a little girl and my mom would haul me off to one of her ladies' luncheons. But I didn't mind. Everything on this menu is awesome.
The "Manager's Favorite" must have a pound-and-a-half of cold roast beef that tastes divine upon their stone-ground bread with horseradish sauce. When I really crave a sandwich, this is the one I want. But the others are just as delicious, too--like the "Garden Delight" with cream cheese, avocado, tomato & sprouts; and the almont chicken salad.
I'm also obsessed with their homemade salad dressings that taste oh-so-yummy upon their salads. If I go, I always buy a quart of the Honey Dijon to go! Â And yes, the chicken tortilla soup on Thursdays IS addictive!!!
Desserts, although sparse, are KILLER. Brownies and blondies satisfy like grandma's, and my personal favorite, the chocolate shake, is the best I've had anywhere! It's the kind made with chocolate ice (hard-packed not soft-serve!) and chocolate syrup. You can't lose with that.
Their only shortcoming is that they have weird hours. They close at 4 from Tues-Sat and they're closed on Sundays and Mondays!
The Bread Basket seems completely out of place for Hammond - it looks like the Cracker Barrel in a house. I went there for lunch after reading the reviews, and the first floor was full. We were told to go outside and enter the second story from the side of the house for more seating, which seemed strange. But the second floor was just as cute. Their bread is their claim to fame and is made fresh daily, as you would expect by the name of the restaurant.
Their soups were very good, and the bread sampler appetizer with artichoke dip was huge and excellent. I thought the sandwiches were mediocre and they would benefit from added creativity for the sandwiches (think: cucumbers, gruyere, brie, even honey!).
Tucked away on Indianapolis Blvd in Hammond Indiana, I can't think of a better place for lunch if you happen to be in the Hammond/Munster area. For about $6, expect a large sandwich with soup of the day or a leafy green salad with little goldfish on top. The "thin swedish" (which has about 1/2 lb of thinly sliced ham) and the "manager's special" (roast beef with horseradish) are my personal favorite sandwiches. I also wanted to warn you that the chicken enchilada soup on Thursday's is habit forming! Around noon, the small dining area fills in, but there is a second floor that is accessible through the side of the building.
On the way out, be sure to pick up a loaf of bread or carrot cake to go (it rivals Edward H.'s).
It's a nice, quaint little place. I forget what Sandwhich I tried there but it was delicious and healthy! , just like the "Healthy McHappy" at "Jinx Cafe". Funny thing is I've known about the place for years and even turned down the idea of going once before, but after I just finally recently tried it, I was surprised and impressed, as I'm sure you will be. I finished the review then remembered that I forgot to mention the Minestrone. It's delicious.
