Upon moving to Denver at the beginning of this month, the BF and I made it our mission to find the best greasy-spoon breakfast in the area. Being two people born and raised in the Midwest, it's safe to say we know our eggs and bacon. So, we diligently set out to spend every Sunday at a different diner until we found the best breakfast Denver has to offer. We expected it to be weeks or months before we found a meal that met our Midwest standards. However, on only our second try, we found the perfect breakfast only blocks from our house. The search is now over, and there is no point in trying anywhere else. If you are looking for us on Sunday morning, we'll be the sleepy, sweatpant-clad couple huddled over our coffee mugs in a booth at Breakfast Queen II.
When you walk in, wave hello to us, and then head to the back of the restaurant. Weekends are busy, but there is a small area in the back to wait for a table. Once you are seated, your service will be everything you expect out of a diner. Most importantly, your coffee cup will be perpetually full.
I went with a simple order of eggs, bacon and hash browns. My eggs, ordered over easy, were cooked perfectly. The bacon was real, freshly cooked bacon, and the hash browns....ohhhhh the hash browns. Those little devils were to die for. I requested them extra crispy, and they were just that. They clearly come from a potato rather than a bag, and the flavor was amazing. I actually left bacon on my plate in order to have room for all of the hash browns, and I normally think it a mortal sin to let bacon go uneaten. My only regret was my failure to order the corned beef hash. Please learn from my mistake, and get it for yourself. The BF let me have one bite of his, and they were to-die-for.
We left stuffed but happy, and are already planning our return.
The hubby and I were browsing through our Entertainment book and came across the BOGO deal for Breakfast Queen II. Â Without knowing anything except we'd get a great deal, we headed down Broadway to give it a shot.
We were in for such a pleasant surprise!! Â We didn't have to wait (although based on the signs inside, it looks like there are often lines), the service was top notch and the food was great! Â I am especially a fan of gyro meat so I was thrilled that Breakfast Queen II offered it as a meat option. Â Potatoes were the kind that I like (cooked on the grill not fried) and everything was just plain yummy. Â We will be returning with or without a coupon!
Rolled in one Saturday morning based on the reviews of my fellow Yelpers. Again, they have directed me towards the light and have not let me down!
As noted by another Yelper, if you are driving down B'way and not paying attention, you can easily miss this place. So, keep an eye open.
As soon as I walked in I was greeted with a hail of "Hi"s, "Good mornings" and "Hey Darlin'" The latter made me feel like I was at home in the Carolinas once again!
I was a little disoriented at first as I didn't realize that the line to be seated forms at the back of the restaurant. As I stood there getting my bearings Brenda, one of the staff members, came up and said "If you are here by yourself, I can sit you with another person who is here by himself." Odd, but cool. So, off we went. It was quite busy, but not overwhelmingly so. It didn't look like a Denny's on a late Sunday morning full of blue hairs waiting to be seated. So, I would not have minded waiting.
I was seated with this dude named Richard. A cool cat in his 60s. He went on to ask me what I recommended from here. Sounding like a true veteran of BQII, I said, "Well, the corn beef hash is to die for." (Thank you, Yelpers!). And, based on that recommendation, Richard commenced to order it. ( As he did order, I was like... fuck... I hope this dude actually likes it, if not, imagine how much of a douche he'll think I am!)
So, we went on to talk about his experiences in this Big Band thing he is in and sea kayaking and the like. I chimed in with some good sports smack and a Cigar joint recommendation... I was great conversation considering we didn't know each other from Adam.
The point to that little rant was this: The people at BQ2 are friendly, down to earth and approachable. Not a lot of attitude here. People are to damned busy eating great down home grub!
Brenda was phenomenal, too. She never let his coffee cup get cold or my beverage of choice go empty. They really do treat you as one of the family. In fact, I was told by her... "You call me 'Ma'am' one more time..." (Sorry, chick, just the way I was raised! And besides, you're working and I was being polite and such... Brenda freaking rocks! Very cool.)
I ended up with the steak and eggs and sour dough toast. In my best Ru-Paul-esque voice "Yummmmmmmy!" The steak was not a little piece of bleck either. It was a pretty stout piece of meat. I'm guessing 10-11oz or so. The sour-dough toast was great, too. In total, it ran about 11 bucks or so with my drink. Uber reasonable.
I totally recommend this place. I left with a nice full little tummy! And, based upon Richards numerous "Ummms" and "mmm" I'm thinking he dug my (and your) recommend of the corn beef hash! Awesome!
The ONLY forewarning.... it is a cash or check only joint. No plastic. There is an ATM in the front and it charges $3.00 to get your cash, so, take a few Mr. Jacksons with you before hand.
It's a diner. They serve diner food. The portions are big. The waitresses treat you like family (depending on the day it can be good or bad). They don't accept credit cards, but there is an ATM in the front. They accept checks.
One day my boyfriend and I took my sister there. We were all playing on our phones while we waited for our food. The waitress "confiscated" my sister's phone. I was pissed, because we had never been there before, so I didn't "get" it. She gave it back to my sister and all was well...but we got the point. They treat you like family. And family should be talking to each other, not their phones.
The food is delicious, and they don't mind if you're picky. Which I am. The coffee is pretty good, too!
I recently was in the area and heard about this little breakfast place and wanted to give it a whirl. Â It was quaint and cozy but knew I had stumbled across something great as the line was literally out the door. Â I decided to wait and see if the hype was what it was built up to be. Â The food was amazing! Â The serving sizes do not disappoint. Â I had the steak and eggs. Â The steak was not a little piece of meat that could blow off your plate. Â It was actually as big as some of the dinner steaks I have ordered. Â The service was super friendly and I loved their listed specials of the day. Â Even if you are not in the area, I recommend heading that direction.
Review Source:I love weekend brunches out with my cousin Roy. Â He unerringly picks out some place that more often than not I've never heard the first thing about; and it without exception ends up being an epic foodie adventure in awesomeness. Â This weekend we went to BQ2; a place that does not stand out as you drive down S Broadway at all if you aren't looking for it, and looks teeny tiny in the unending row of narrow stores. Â There's parking in the back, free, I would advise taking that route. Â And there begins the 1 thing I find needs improvement about this place: the entryway is about a 25 foot long narrow corridor with no place to sit -- and if that place is full -- *and it apparently is, often* -- you are stuck standing there for however long your wait is for that day. Â With comfy, well-stuffed, round-bellied departers squeeeeezing by us in the hall on their way out. Â There *IS* a front door, right off Broadway -- but I was told by our server that "everyone seems to forget that it's there". Â And if you have finite dining space...95% of the time it's going to be irrelevant if you *manage* to get in -- because there won't be any empty tables. Â SO...resign yourself to a wait in the hall. Â Ours wasn't too bad, maybe 15 minutes or so. Â Definite design problem there. Â We were made to feel welcomed and like our wait was worth it with one of the kindly servers coming to the door with a basket of assorted baked breads and mini-muffins - yummeh.
And then suddenly you get in, and like traffic clearing on I-25 after an inexplicable jam you find no reason for, everything gets golden for you. Â
The rectangular shaped dining area has (I am guessing) perhaps 20 tables / booths in it...and it was full the entire hr-ish long stay we were there, with people rotating in and out. Â The booths had some kind of weird supporting framework; I could feel it at the table I sat and and it felt like I was sitting on a plank. Â Wear and tear, maybe. Â Low volume 80s music wafted through (it really is pretty low volume) the entire dining experience, which is great for me since I love 80s music - everything from OMD to Men Without Hats to Duran Duran to the somewhat-out-of-pattern GnR. Â We were greeted by awesome, cheerful server Alexis - full of smiles and energy, and usually, 1 or 2 pots of coffee in hand, if not balancing your hotplate of nomables on an arm. Â She makes good conversation too; just enough -- not too much (too busy for that!), but not nothing, either, which was nice. The coffee here is good -- first coffee I've had in 3 months. Â Really good. Â Plenty of creamer in tiny containers, and pink-n-yellow sweeteners for those who don't take sugar.
Now the food: Â I'm convinced, after just 1 meal (and eyeballing 2 or 3 other plates), there isn't a meal this place can't cook badly. Â Both Roy and I had the "Mountain Man Skillet", a medium round cast iron skillet heaped up with eggs, diced potatoes, red and green peppers, mushrooms, *jalapeno sausage* (SO GOOD!) and yummmmmy green chili; served up with your choice of toast. Â It was *amazing*. Â I can have a pretty sizable appetite, and I was only able to wedge in 2 ticks of toast and half the skillet, at which point my tummy said "ding! you're done. Â don't even try for more". Â Whatever room was left in there kept getting endless re-servings of coffee poured in to fill it -- no words, no requests, Alexis just rocks it that well. Â These 2 massive skillets, and the coffee for us both, came out to under $18 for both of us -- *very* inexpensive for the amount and quality of food you get. Â I love trendinista people-watching places with excellent food in places like Cherry Creek, Cap Hill and whatnot -- cousin says he loves *this* place because you can get the same quality food at half the price -- and now, I believe him. Â And you *still* get the people watching factor - if you can tear your eyes away from the food. Â Another person nearby ordered a large oval plate and graciously let me take a picture of it, that if Dennys, IHOP or VI saw it, they would weep at not being able to serve that much awesome for presumably a low price. Â Pics will be uploaded...to close, this place is outstanding and I can easily see they could fill a place twice this large on any weekend day. Â Can't wait to come back here!!
***ONE HUGE POINT OF NOTE: Â they do NOT take credit/debit cards here -- so come toting some cash!*** (other reviews seem to suggest there's an ATM there; I never saw it.)
Had a few minutes to wait. Some of the friendliest customers I've ever seen. Definitely a Bronco's restaurant. Was quickly seated. Nice comfortable booths. Small seating and kitchen but they make it work and quickly. Ordered steak and eggs with hashbrowns and toast. Must of been a 8oz steak on steroids. It was big. Plenty of hashbrowns which were nicely cooked. The eggs scrambled and not rubbery. 4 slices of toast golden brown and soaked in butter. This place is a diamond on Broadway. Cheap prices and the menu will satisfy all tastes.
What are you waiting for Timmy? Run tell everyone to eat here.
Surprise, surprise! Â This place rocked.
Hole in the wall, cash only, but there's an ATM. Â Waitresses are a bit craggy and maybe even gruff --- but certainly nice enough and definitely accommodating. Â Â
We went on a Thursday morning, late --- which I'd certainly call off hours --- and got the last seat. Other people had to wait, and there's really not a lot of room to wait, unless it's outside. Great local, regular crowd.
And great FOOD. Plus it's CHEAP. My companion had bacon, eggs and toast and I had something with eggs and sausage gravy and cheese that was absolutely decadent but also absolutely tasty.
I'll definitely go again.
I have just added The Breakfast Queen II to my legendary diners of Denver status.
THE BAD NEWS: There is always a crowd. and a wait
THE GOOD NEWS: There's a reason.
Inexpensive love laden breakfast food, featuring a tremendous home made hash and terriffic bacon.
It aint' fancy. It ain't elegant. But boy howdy, is it good!
Cheap breakfast and funky. We heard the green chili was delic and so most of us ordered something with the chili in or on it. It was good but not the best I have had. I don't think any of the 6 of us were too hungry thNks to the yummy Thanksgiving dinner the night before. It is a good place for breakfast as long as you don't expect a lot. Service is great and when you wait they bring tasty treats around. I would go back especially after shopping at Teds mens store next store.
Review Source:i went here with my girlfriend's father for an early lunch. he told me the green chili was to die for and that i had to get the green chili breakfast burrito. i ended up taking his work and ordered the thing.
to say the least i thought it would be better. it was ok and all but for what he said i thought it would blow my socks off.
the wait staff was pretty nice. and the food over all was ok. it was pretty average breakfast diner food found in a pretty small little diner in the middle of a large city.
would i go there agian? sure. i would. i just wont go in expecting something super amazing. it's pretty average in my book.
if you are in the area and shopping at the many small shops then stop into this place for a bite to eat. all be it average it's better than a lot of the fast food chains in the area.
Screw the ambiance. This place is super fun. Finally a breakfast place you can order a la cart without feeling guilty. The waitresses are happy, look like they spend their free time at the gym! I'm not kidding. One of them competes in the Ms. Fitness contest. They are always moving and grooving, filling coffee cups and making sure you are happy with your meal. Typical breakfast but I understand the green chili is excellent. Price is extremely affordable. Compared to Racines, I'd say a super value.
Strong recommendation, but don't expect the Ritz. It's down home, like your father used to take you to. Same seats probably.
This is the only breakfast place the wife and I will go to anymore in our neighborhood area. Â Yea there might be a line when you show up but wait 5-10 mins and you'll be in a table before you know it. Â Its good food with over the top service. Â The wife and I can usually show up eat breakfast and be back to the house under 45mins. Â And we live over a mile away. Â The Green Chile goes great with everything on the menu. Â Sundays only they have eggs benedicts which are awesome. Good food.
Review Source:My family and I love the Breakfast Queen. Â My boys, ages 4 and 2 request this restaurant more than any other. Â The reason? Â Besides the food being excellent, the staff makes the experience personal. Â If you become even a semi "regular" they remember you, and are so fast, courteous, and friendly. Â On top of it all, my two-year-old has numerous and VERY severe food allergies. Â The staff goes out of their way to be sure he has something he can eat and they prepare it special if they have to. Â You can't get service like that just anywhere.
I'm from New Mexico and was having trouble finding chile that I like here in the Denver area. Â I found the Breakfast Queen when someone recommended the green chile to me. Well, it's THE BEST green chile in the Denver metro area, hands down. Â "The Garcia" is my favorite, and my husband loves the corned beef hash.
Awesome food at an inexpensive price with the best service you'll find anywhere.... doesn't get any better than The Breakfast Queen!
Positives: Friendly staff and very quick service. Â Everyone enjoyed their meals and cleaned their plates (when possible- large portions). Â We recommend adding some habanero garlic hot sauce (made at the restaurant)
Negatives: Not much of a decor and we felt rushed once we received the bill (we were still eating at the time!)
Overall: Good cheap food if you want a very low key kind of place.
If you have not been here... I suggest you go. This is a place where everything on the menu rocks. this is good cheap food. Not just breakfast either. You can get a gyro, a burger... a steak... German sausage?
But the breakfast is stellar. I love love love the Mountain man skillet! It is the perfect day after drinking breakfast. Gyro Omelet is sooo good too. Best Tatziki sauce. One thing i love here more than anything... is the Green Chili. I crave this stuff. Homemade from scratch. : )
The coffee is always full... and that is a great thing.
This is a place that never closes either(they close everyday at 3). It is open when all the places in Denver are closed-think blizzards...christmas... etc!!
The owners always come out and ask how your meal is and that is always welcome in my book.
Cash Only. They do take checks... and park in the back for free parking. Always busy... but quick service! this is my favorite no nonsense breakfast ever... they just need Bloody Marys and they would be perfect!
Ok. lovers of corned beef hash. Get thee to the Breakfast Queen. Â It's made fresh in house here with real corned beef, ground up fine, and served well spiced with chunks of potato.
The poached eggs were "micro-poached". But, I can live with that now that I have finally found real corned beef hash in denver.
Great service. Well priced. Good Food.
Consider me a regular from here on out.
Great place to eat if your nostalgic for the old days and tired of the cookie cutter breakfast chains. Â Yeah the food is on the greasy side and it is a small restaurant but if's a fun place to eat if your open-minded. Â Only takes cash but they have an ATM in the front if you need it. Â If you want to see what the inside of a real restaurant looks like you can't go wrong here. Â It's usually fairly busy so be prepared to wait at least 10 minutes or so for a table. Â Service is good.
Review Source:It was like I just took my DeLorean up to 88 mph and drove into the 1960's. Â The Breakfast Queen is a real, authentic, American breakfast diner. Â From the pictures on the walls to the vinyl booths, there is nothing fake here.
The restaurant is fairly small, probably 20 tables total. Â We showed up on a weekday morning and scored a table within 2 minutes of arriving because someone was just leaving. Â I have no idea where we would have waited because every square inch of the restaurant was being used.
The food is very good, large portioned, and inexpensive. Â That is a fantastic combination in my world. Â I wasn't a big fan of the hash browns, but everything else I had (pancakes, bacon, and eggs) was top shelf. Â My wife and daughter were able to share a meal between the two of them.
Things to know when going to the Breakfast Queen II:
1. Park in the rear
2. They do not accept credit cards. Â Bring cash.
What a TREAT!!!  I was a Halloween costume shopping on Broadway and saw this little spot!  It was in the Top 5 for Channel 7's A-List so I figured I should give it a try.  I wasn't disappointed!  It's a tiny place with small tables and every single one was full at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.   It had that great diner look and the waitress was very fun and kinda sassy.. ( I like that! )  We got our brewed iced tea with lemon in moments and the waitress came to take our order very quickly after that.  She asked if we'd been before and proceeded to make recommendations.  I went with her first one because I am a breakfast burrito nut!  And my husband ordered the Denver Omelette - no onions.  This burrito was amazing... The flavors were all blended together, the chorizo sausage was good but  not overpowering like it can be.  The green chili it was smothered in was homemade and awesome.  My husbands omelette was FULL of ham, peppers and no onions as ordered ... YEAH!....  and the potatoes.. well lets just say that those well done, lots of crispy brown bits REAL hash browns are worth driving across town for... One of my favorite reminds me of my gramma on the farm comfort foods.  We will DEFINITELY be back.
Do park in the back as Broadway has very limited parking.
THEY DO NOT ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS!
I had my first Huevos Rancheros at the Breakfast Queen and have been an addict ever since. Be prepared for a wait on weekend mornings, and enter the back so you don't have to look for parking on Broadway or make your way through to the back where the waiting area is anyway. Good service and good, greasy, hangover food...
Review Source:The Breakfast Queen II holds a special place in my heart. It has nursed me through hangovers, fed me when blizzards closed all other doors, and given me that scuzzy, small town breakfast diner experience when I felt homesick.
BQII is a greasy spoon breakfast joint that is always packed. The food is cheap and quite good, especially the delicious breakfast burrito stuffed with chorizo. The waitresses are true truck-stop quality, always friendly and no-nonsense and ready with a coffee refill.
BQII makes my morning every time. Go there!
