I had the pleasure of visiting this little shop while working in the Southside..taco specials are the way to go..add an fresh squeezed juice and you have a tasty vegetarian meal..for a deal!
*As a bonus, there was even live entertainment from a singer/guitar player during my visit...definitely visit if you're in the area.
I love this place! This location looks way better than the one that they used to have on 71st street. So far I have tried the veggie burger (both the soy and blackbean) and the chicken sandwhich. The chicken sandwhich has me hooked! My only complaint is the lack of salt on the fries. Other than that everything is great!
Review Source:On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Â tacos are $1. I decided to get one of each:avocado, chicken and beef.
The avocado and chicken were tasty enough. They certainly were all fresh. Now that beef, you just can't get me to believe that that wasn't real meat. It was well seasoned and it was just good. Â For a dollar you may as well go try them.
I did all kinds of research looking for a vegetarian restaurant in the Chicago area while i would be down there for the day.The other day ago i drove my moms car all the way from Northwestern Hospital to 87th and East End street and was thoroughly disappointed.
The ambiance or the customer service wasn't what did it.Let me get that out of the way.By this being a Black owned business i want to desperately inform people that its a good clean business that serves decently priced vegetarian food in a timely fashion. Its located right next to a Black braiding hair salon, and Harold's Chicken is the next store over.
The problem starts and ends with the flavoring of the food.I got 3 or 4 Chicken tacos and 2 beef tacos.By it being Taco Tuesday they were only a dollar. The tacos were halfway filled which is a killer for me.The Chicken tasted funny, almost kind of like Tuna. The beef was ok..i guess, but nothing I'd order again.
The other 2 items i got were the Vegetable nut loaf bread sandwich and the catfish nuggets. The sandwich cost $5 and it had no flavor what so ever.If i could describe what it was missing I'd probably have the talents to be a Vegan chef. All i know is that they needed to up the spices or change them all together.
About the best item i got was the catfish nuggets. Those were prepared with a batter that almost completly copied real Catfish nuggets. Those were $3.99
Altogether nothing I had Tuesday was worth the trip to the southside.I doubt any non vegetarian would want to come here, and i don't recommend twisting their arm to try to convince them either..Im sadly disappointed in the brotha/sista duo for trying to introduce this type of Vegan /Vegetarian food into these types of communities.
With Harold's Chicken right next to this place and most Blacks loving chicken over stale cardboard burgers and tacos, i don't predict a long and full business life!
I have loved Bro. Tim's food since forever! There are daily specials such as dollar tacos on Tuesdays and Thursdays! Â If you have not taken the opportunity to try Bro. Tim's get there PRONTO!!! The service is always awesome. Â The food is SUPER awesome and the location is convenient (just of Stony Island on 87th street). Â One more thing....FISH NUGGETS (of course its not fish ; )
Review Source:Great food. Â I got the fish sandwich, which had nuggets instead of a patty, but still was good. Â Breading was similar to that at Soul Veg.
I asked the cashier if the food was all vegan, and she didn't know what that meant. Â When I explained that it had no animal products like eggs or dairy, Â she immediately affirmed that it was all vegan. Â I didn't notice any red flags in the food I had either.
Food is pretty cheap, especially on Taco Tuesdays and Thursdays. Â The portions are smallish, so don't be afraid to get more.
This is more of a to-go place, it seemed. Â Atleast all our food was in a bag without asking. Â I second Cristene M's notion that the food is not fast, but I think worth the wait.
If you have wee ones, they do not have a changing table in the bathroom, nor do they have child seats.
For people unfamiliar with the South Side, the neighborhood seemed pretty nice. Â Even better than where Soul Veg is.
I'll definitely return. Â They have so much more I want to try.
Oh Brother Tims. How I want to give you 5 stars. A southside veg*n restaurant about 2 miles from my job. Cheap food. So many choices! Vegan shakes. So far though, everything I have eaten has been bland. The bread for the sandwich tastes like..flour. The "chicken" drumstick things? Three little bland but greasy soy nuggets. The shake? Can't go wrong with the shake, right? Soy aftertaste. No!!! The "fish" nuggets and tacos seem to be the favorite items so I will try those next. Oh yes, the fries are good, but you don't need to come to 87th street for fries. Stick with Soul Veg or Yahs for now.
Review Source:Hooray for another south side veggie restaurant! Â Brother Tim's is a fast-food style (minus the fast part) restaurant serving good vegan/vegetarian food on the south side. Â They have lots of sandwiches, burgers, tacos, pizza's, etc. Â And if you go on Tuesday, be prepared for their "Taco Tuesday" special - $1 tacos all day (yum!). Â I ordered the soy chicken sandwich, a veggie beef taco, and an avocado taco (it was Taco Tuesday!). Â All the food was decent, but I'm not sure that I would order the chicken sandwich again. Â My friend really liked the BBQ Staklet so I'm sure that will be the next item I order. Â We ended our meal with the oatmeal squares. Â They were good, but could have used more sugar - on the positive side, they were probably healthier that way. Â Brother Tim's is worth checking out, 3-3.5 stars.
Review Source:Any time I find a vegetarian restaurant on the south side, I'm always anxious to visit. You could plant a vegetarian restaurant directly across the street from a highschool in a rough neighborhood, and limit the operation times to the single hour when class is getting out, and I'd still go there, especially when the place hasn't given any reviews on yelp.
Earlier this week however, a friend of mine asked her group of friends if anybody had been here, and to my surprise, nobody had. So, given my vast amount of free time, I hopped on my bike, and trekked my ass 22 blocks east, and 62 blocks south to sample the Brother Tim's yummy treats.
It should be noted that I'd watched two hours of the tv show "gangland" on netflix prior to hopping off my couch, and hopping on my bike. This made me feel extra nervous about the trip I'd be taking, but at the same time, I was excited to admire the scenery on the way there. I ended up taking mainly residential streets (emerald & union) into the 6000's, and then I ended up traveling too-far east from some series of streets way over to south chicago avenue. After that, I finally got to 8700S, and 2000E, and took my trip west, past a lot of people who didn't care to see a white guy on a bike wearing a pair of purple gloves that had white stripes on them.
Finally, I made it to the restaurant, and upon walking in, was greeted by a super friendly girl who took my order, and even suggested other things to consume. I ended up getting the Soy burger with cheese, an order of fries, a taco (It was taco tuesday, $1 for any of their tacos), and a lemonaide that had honey added to it.
The food was awesome. It's been years since I've had fast food, and the flavors really took me back. They also had some of the very best soy cheese I've ever had on a burger, and it was all just amazing.
After finishing my lunch/dinner, I ordered what they call their "Rejuvenator Shake". It's made with soy ice cream, orange juice protein, and powdered honey, and it turned out super good.
I love south side vegetarian restaurants. I rode my bike in 30 degree temperatures for a round-trip total of a minimum of 148 blocks (more on the first leg of the trip due to navigation mistakes), and that ended up totaling probably at least 30 miles. Absolutely no regrets. This place is an absolute treat for any vegetarian on the north & south sides of the city, and I'll definitely be a returning customer as long as this place remains open.
Also, I wish they had a tip jar on the counter. I wish I could have tipped them for being so sweet.
