First we started with the artichoke dip, which was phenomenal.   The size was huge for $6.00 and it was piping hot and delicious.  The fried pita chips on the side were perfect.   Next we had the fried pickles, which were huge and sour, just how you would want fried pickles.   I had the opa burger, which was very good.   It had a huge roasted red pepper, tons of pepperoncini, feta spread and kalamata olives.   The fries on the side were served in a huge fryer basket.   Everything was very fresh and service was very attentive and friendly.   Great, solid burger spot.

Our new favorite burger joint...I had the Tuscan, and my hubby had the Cozumel..both were absolutely delish! I really liked the decor and the waitstaff were very friendly.

There's a gourmet burger place in Chesterton that puts Bugerhaus to shame. It's called Octave and there are numerous reasons why it's superb.

    1) Drinks. Why are drink prices rivaling those of downtown Chicago? This is Valparaiso. Not everyone is a yuppie who wants to pay $6 for a Peroni (Italian urine water). A gourmet burger place should have gourmet beer -- that beer list should change every so often. Check one for Octave doing it right.

    2) Meat. Burgerhaus has a decent burger. Is it grass raised? No. Is it most likely pumped full of antibiotics standing knee deep in its own fecal matter? I don't know, you tell me. I do know however, you can taste the difference in a grass raised burger. It's night and day. Check two for Octave.

    3) Size. Ambiance. Variety. Burgerhaus surprisingly has a nice interior. It feels rather home-like. Octave is unique but very cramped. In terms of creativeness, I like what both establishments are doing. I have to give it to Octave though, some of their menu items will blow your mind. Nothing at Burgerhaus has. After having the Yucatan and the American I would say were good, but small. Octave has a bigger burger called the Hot Pants that I would choose 10 out of 10 times over any menu item here. Also, the Cajun fries were pretty bad. I seriously think they got some McCormick's Cajun seasoning and doused the fries in it.

TL;DR - A mediocre "gourmet" non grass-rasied burger place with over priced pseudo craft beer catering to Valpo's yuppies.

Great burgers, great service, and while beer selection is limited it was good as well. I recommend the beer battered pickle chips, you wont be disappointed. I like the fact they use local ingredients for everything, will definitely be going back.

This was a nice place, very pleasant and comfortable atmosphere.  The food was good and some of the burger combos were pretty unique.  I wish the portions were a little bigger (mostly the fries).  And since I have a young son I wish they had a changing table in the restroom.  But overall nice place.  Good food and very clean.

Not impressed. Over priced and not tasty. I guess my expectations were set too high.

I've only eaten here once, and was pleasantly suprised how good my experience was.  The environment seemed a step above.  The burger were fresh and very tasty. Although I was expecting a Huge burger, It wasnt enormous, but the taste made up for it. It was so good. And a very nice atmosphere. Fries come in a unique basket.  I will go back.

My wife and I visited Burgerhaus for the first time yesterday after attending a New Year's party where word got out of their legendary Spicy Black Bean burgers. We were skeptical but gave it a try. Oh my mother of God! are these things delicious. One bite and the wife and I were like ravenous beasts chowing them down. After the first bite we looked at each other, her with big approving eyes, both shaking our head yes, so enraptured in this burger we could not speak. I don't think a word was said until both burgers were devoured.

    Obviously, we'll be back!

1/4 lb. is not  a gourmet burger.  The toppings are ok but more beef would separate this restaurant from Red Robin.  Right now there is little difference.

Even though I am not a fan of gourmet hamburgers, i wanted to support another locally owned small business. The culture within this establishment is one of warmth reinforced with professional service.

The presentation of the food was different including the little baskets for the french fries. My meal was cooked to my request and very tasty.

This is a good place for a business lunch as the atmosphere was quiet and the food selection was simple and affordable.

The atmosphere is great, very classy and comfortable. Our server was amazing and attentive despite being extremely busy.

We started with chili cheese fries as an appetizer. I can honestly say that these were the best chili cheese fries I have ever had. They were beautifully plated, the chili was fresh and perfectly seasoned, and the fries were just amazing. I cannot say enough about these fries.

For entrees we got a Haus burger with a side salad and a Rhinelund with the Southwest slaw. The Haus is the basic burger offered. I added bacon to it. The burger was done to perfect and it is among the best burgers I have ever tasted. The salad was very fresh despite it being December. The dressing was homemade and delicious (I went for the balsamic). The Rhinelund was exceptional with homemade grainy mustard and lots of caramelized onions. It was a great flavor combination. The slaw was superb and well seasoned. It was creamy and not watery unlike so many slaws I have had.

    Limited Menu. Limited Beer Selection.
Our experience was overall okay at worst and great at best.   I expected a big juicy burger, but think more in the direction of Schoops and Steak n Shake for burger size.  Quality made up for lack of size in the patty, but at 10 dollars a burger, it's a little costly for the size.
The fries were fries, you can dress up a potato all you want, at the end of the day it's still a potato. They were crispy, thick, and an excellent compliment to the juicy (yet small) burger.
My only real problem was the lack of variety and questionable service.  More cheeses, more appetizers, more beer. Period.  The server was nice and prompt, the food was hot and fresh, but we ordered two cheddar bacon burgers, one medium one medium well, no toppings but the cheese n bacon.  My fellow diners burger was medium well (what I ordered) and mine was medium but with a shit ton of onions (lazily cut)...no one ordered that...also the cheese on our burgers was either white cheddar or Swiss, either way, not what we envisioned.
The food was good, but sharp cheddar and provolone are my fav cheeses on burgers. (of course they don't have em). The fries will prolly stay "almost famous" until they do something to make them different from other fries. Correct service is cool too.

Pros:  Friendly Courteous Staff, Quality Food, Interesting Beer On Tap, Hip Decor

    Cons: Order Accuracy, Limited Menu

Hopefully this review won't get clipped.

We've been here twice. We've had the burgers, the fries, and the fried pickles. Everything has been very good. A limited beer selection. The service has been good despite them being very busy. Overall, a good place.

Mehhh... the burgers were good as were the fried pickles.. but for a brew and burger place not impressed...come on.. only like 7 on tap..and one was miller light! Franklin House has a better selection.. guess the Costas went to Octave in Chesterton and had to make a halfassed Valpo version.. not bad but once was prob enough unless they add like 10 more beers and maybe some bottles.....would give 2 1/2 stars not 3

Visited this restaurant for the first time last night and it was spetacular!  From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with a very cool and inviting interior and atmosphere and a warm welcome at the reception stand.

After analyzing the simple menu, my dinner companion ordered the American Burger and I opted for the Aussie Burger with cheese, bacon and a fried egg.  The burgers were spetacular and the buns were perfect, not too hard and not too soft.  My friend ordered a side of the three bean chili and I ordered the Southwest Cole Slaw with our burgers.  The side portions were large and delicious.

While the entrees were great, our appetizer of Parmesean and Garlic Fries was spetacular!  A decent sized portion of perfectly cooked french fries topped with grated parmesean, garlic and I do believe a drizzle of truffle oil...spetacular!  They were so good that you wanted to eat them bite by bite and enjoy the blend of flavors!  Absolutely great!

One other item of note is the selection of beers and the service of the beers.  I ordered a beer that came shortly after we ordered.  That beer stayed cold the entire time I was eating and was cold from the first drink to the last swallow.

I highly recommend this restaurant!  I've already told others about it and am looking forward to returning soon!
