This place was great! I'm so glad I found it.. My new favorite town breakfast place! I had the cinnamon French toast and it was cooked perfectly with a nice balance of cinnamon and sweetness. It came with some yummy blueberry sauce too..
My friend had one of the eggs Benedict's which he said was the best poached egg he's ever had! He loved it and said it was super delicious. The waitress was so friendly and made you feel like family. I noticed they have a lot of regulars which also says something about this place. I will definitely be coming back and bringing my husband next time!

I have been going to this restaurant for several years and have noted the portions are getting smaller. The last time I went I ordered the breakfast burrito which I like very much, which by the way has also reduced in size, in any case in the middle of my burrito I found I was chewing on something big and plastic. Rather than swallowing it which would have caused me profound discomfort to say the least I removed it from my mouth. It was a piece of plastic about one inch square. When the waitress came to pick up our dishes I told her to tell the chef the burrito was good but next time make sure he left out the plastic. She shook her head and took the dishes. No one came to apologize, nor explain. Needless to say this left a bad taste in my mouth.

I wasn't impressed with this place. I went this morning and was disappointed by the customer service. The host did not welcome our breakfast party and the server was not at all attentive. As each of the party members finished a dish, the server took a dish, one at a time, rather than bus the table.

The food was also sub par. We all took the recommendations from other reviews and were not impressed. The French Toast was soggy, the bacon greasy, and the scrambled eggs slid on the plate.

Yea, I doubt I will return.

I wish I could give a 3 1/2 star rating but yelp doesn't allow that :-(

Overall, I do like this restaurant! We came in for dinner one night and the gentleman at the front, I believe who is the manager or owner didn't acknowledge us at all. We stood there in front of him for a while until my boyfriend politely said "there's going to be 2.. Do we seat ourselves? Or is there a section you'd like for us to sit in?" To which he replied "no, no, I'll seat you in just one minute." (Would have been nice for him to say that to begin with).

It took them a very long time to come and take our order and our server Victor, although you could tell he was trying to do his best, was just being stretched to thin across the floor. There were 2 servers in there but their tables were all over the place causing them to be running back and forth across the room. We finally ordered the spinach dip as an appetizer, my boyfriend ordered a burger and fries and I ordered the vegetarian chili. The spinach dip which was wonderful and the bread bowl it was served with was very good! We were excited for our food! 45 minutes later, we were still waiting for our burger and chili! Which is a little ridiculous.. We were patient because like I said, Victor was truly doing the best he could. At one point, he had to stop serving his tables because the manager/host literally walked halfway across the room only to shout his name across the restaurant to ask him to assist him in splitting a bill for some customers.

We finally got our food. The burger in my boyfriends words was "nothing special, it's a burger." The seasoned curly fries were excellent though! My vegetarian chili was not chili at all! It was a bunch of mashed black beans DRENCHED and LAYERED in cheese, huge chunks of onions probably about 3/4th of a cup of sour cream and tomatoes. It was unbearable to eat! I mentioned it to Victor and he was quick to get me a bowl of soup instead. Only odd thing is he never removed the chili and just suggested we left it on the table (maybe because he didn't have enough time to clear it?).

I've since been back and got the turkey lettuce wraps (to-go!) which were very good and again was waited on by Victor. He does a great job as a server, just wish he had more supportive manager to assist. He should be learning from the manager, not the other way around.

I probably will come back, but it may take a lot of convincing for my boyfriend. Although when we left, he did say he had to hand it to Victor that he tried his best to remedy the situations as they were coming at him.

Hopefully next experience is a bit better! I have my fingers crossed with hope! Lol

I'm not one that looks for that special ambience.. or awesome artwork on the walls, or anything like that.

I do want a clean, sanitary restaurant with friendly/genuine people working, and a decent plate of food for my money. Buttercup is this place.

Table, clean. Waitress, nice. Ambiance, cozy. Breakfast menu, extensive, but NORMAL. I like normal.

One thing that was not normal was the crumbly, buttery, goodness of the blueberry muffin some of the family members got! Wow, it had a thick coffee-cake like topping to it. NOW THAT'S A MUFFIN!

Anyway, we all got omelettes, and boy were they huge. Lots of fillings, fresh, hefty amount of cheese. The house potatoes are very flavorful. Has some sort of red paprika sprinkle on them. It's not spicy, just gives them a great color and flavor!

Niece had mini pancakes.. came with WARM syrup.. they were really good.

Breakfast sausage is tasty, nice crispy skin, classic flavor.

Coffee is strong but not overpowering.

Prices are VERY reasonable for the amount and quality of food.

Very good choice for breakfast and brunch!!

Went to Buttercup first time this morning for breakfast (was going elsewhere) and sat at the counter and first thing I see is sign for breakfast special for $5.95 which I had and which was great - served fast too - told waitress I will be back. Only downside was when I came out of the restaurant, people were lining up at the court building and oh boy some of them were scary!

Standard diner fare. I had the tuna salad sandwich and it was good and generous serving. Nothing special. Good location. Good parking. Good staff. We stayed until it closed.

My man's family recently had a HUGE very spontaneous reunion/dinner here and this place was very accommodating on such short notice. I'd say we had over 40 ppl in there and only 2 waitresses. Im sorry but I don't think that's quite enough- and one of them was verrry frazzled by the whole thing, too!
As expected, we all got our food orders at different times, and some small things were forgotten.
But one of our family members does have a VERY serious allergy to gluten (nearly life threatening) and he was able to get a meal and enjoy it with no worries at all.
All in all an A-Ok place!

We have a large group of car enthusiasts who meet every Sat morning. We are very fortunate that the Buttercup gives us a large room to use, and we are very lucky to have Jo as our server. The orders are always delivered hot, and to the correct person. But what really makes our weekly visits worth the drive to Walnut Creek is the efficient, quick, and very friendly service we get from Jo. She is the most conscientious and attentive server we have ever had, and that has got to be tough, trying to keep our 25 plus orders correct, plus waiting on tables in the regular dining room. She makes the effort to remember names, and what you typically order. She does it with a smile and has fun with us as well.

Man, I love this little old school grill!!

I have always been curious about this place, especially with the temptatious name of Buttercup : )

I might have been here once years ago, though I really can't recall. So, my work crew had the fantastic Idea to get breakfast one morning. It was a toss up between IHOP and Here. Being I had never been to Buttercup Grill ( at least from what I can remember) and it was the closest to our work, well we decided to give Buttercup some business.

Located off Ygnacio valley rd, right next to a gas station and just a door down from the WC Court, this place stands out pretty well. There seems to be a decent amount of parking, with a nice outside eating patio. The interior of the grill reminds me of little diner/grills that I had visited back in the 80s, a little outdated though, clean, well kept and cozy feelen.

We picked up our orders to go. Most of us ordered omelets and Griddle breakfasts. I ordered a sausage, spinage and tomato omelet. All items come with your choice of 2 sides. I chose fruit and a blueberry Streusel. With tax my order came to about $10.08 which was about the same for everyone elses. The service I received from the people working here during my quick visit, seemed pretty friendly for the most part, except for one of the managers ( I believe) who finished ringing our orders up, he had a bit of an attitude which was a slight star knocker.I did notice there array of delicious looking pies there while waiting which does have me tempted to come back and try.

I brought the breakfast back to our office and I was pleasantly thrilled to see how fluffy and delicious it looked, as well as delicious it turned out tasting!! Yum!! Cooked to perfection, fluffy, flavorful and just down right satisfying. My fruit was nice, sweet and fresh, and my blueberry muffin was just incredible!! Everyone else felt just the same and thought everything tasted fantastic!!

Yup, I am definitely a fan!!

Buttercup's appearance reminds me of Denny's. Comfy, familiar. But, the food is poor quality - reminds me of something out of a box or a frozen dinner. I would prefer to go to Denny's over this place any day.

Disgustingly dirty. The tables were so filthy that we left without sitting down. Yet the restaurant was nearly empty.
How are they still in business?

An Update:

Wednesday, September 5, 2012

I received a message from the proprietor of this establishment. He is apparently watching the Yelp reviews, (if perhaps not his service staff). He was very apologetic and very concerned. (That is a HUGE plus. Someone is paying attention. This tells me that there is HOPE.) He contends that the strawberries on the waffle are in fact FRESH, not frozen. Since I have no proof to the contrary, I will concede his point and withdraw this comment. He also contends that the pastrami is a top shelf brand- Robert's. Again, I have no reason to doubt his word and will stipulate that it probably IS, in fact, Robert's brand. I have had better and I have certainly had much worse. My opinion of the pastrami is subjective, as would be anyone else's opinion. The bread was soggy. The potato salad was decent and there was nothing wrong with the cole slaw (as I stated below).

I do stand by the rest of my review. The facts are the facts. The food was passable. I think the Black Bear has them beat for the money. The service is as I described.

The SERVICE is the part that the owner can most EASILY and QUICKLY repair. Treat the customers as honored guests. In this economy, it's a miracle that any restaurants are staying afloat. You can't afford to drive your market share to the competition. You just can't.

After careful consideration, I stand by my original review as originally written below, correcting for the strawberries & pastrami vendor. I also amend to note that the owner is awake and paying attention.

Bottom Line: Food, 2 Stars

The Service, 1 Star

***********************

Here's the Original Review

Similar to Denny's, but TWICE as expensive. (Well, the food at Denny's is a little worse.)

The service: Pretty poor. Over half the staff is ESL and the half that isn't ESL are pretty rough around the edges- inappropriate jokes, and so on. For example, I requested some Splenda brand sweetener for my coffee. (Their offering at every table was saccharine or sugar.) They brought me a single packet. I asked for MORE and could they please bring some Half & Half. Another single, obviously very expensive, precious packet arrived. A half an hour later, my coffee was finally refilled. "Could you please bring some Splenda & cream please?" The waitress replied "There's a $2 charge for extra Splenda..... just kidding! Hahahahhahahha!"

She was the only one laughing. I was not amused.

And yes, she really did say this.

So, the food arrives. The presentation is pretty good for my guest, the waffle had a fairly generous serving of thawed frozen strawberries and whipped topping. She likes it. She comments that the sausage is lousy & the eggs are meh. She eats her waffle and is happy with it.

On my end, I ordered pastrami. Now, everyone including me knows the ONLY place to get good pastrami is in a good deli. And so I'm not surprised at the 3rd rate pastrami on soggy bread. Mmmmm, uhhhhh, yeah, and so anyway..... It came with a nice crisp kosher dill (1/4 slice). It came with potato salad which wasn't bad. It came with sole slaw that was passable.

The Bottom Line:

1. The food- It's not good, it's not bad. It's passable. It's a step up from Denny's- an EXPENSIVE step up for what you get. If you compare this to the Black Bear Diner 2 miles away, the Black Bear wins hands down every day of the week. The food is about like Lyon's, Coco, etc. A cut above Denny's but not spectacular. Actually, the food compares exactly to the food they serve at the John Muir Hospital cafeteria. That's just about an exact match.

2. The Service- This is where they FALL ON THEIR FACE and SERVICE is the EASIEST thing to fix!!!!! Wow, really? Some simple training and they same employees could SHINE. But management doesn't want to manage I suppose. (Managers- read your Yelp reviews and save your restaurants! Please!)

Comparing AGAIN to the Black Bear, or to Sorrento's or Tullio's or Melo's, comparatively, the service crashes & burns.

I left them a tip, but only 10%. We dropped close to $50 in that place and I don't think I got my money's worth.

This isn't a one star place- it's not bad. It just doesn't reach it's potential and there are so many other places that actually treat their customers like honored guests.

Amazing omelet, fit for a hang over. Great mimosas. The cakes looked amazing, but due to the generous portions, I was unable to sample them. Definitely worth a second visit.

I love the Buttercup. It is my home away from home; when I want great food, great service and a consistently pleasant overall experience. I can say that although I have eaten there hundreds of time, over a 22 year span, it is my "go-to" place when I want a superb breakfast, good lunch and good dinner for a fair price. I can always take friends there and count on any enjoyable experience. They are very accomodating when you ask for any adjustments in your order. They go way beyond providing your meal the way you would like it.

I often sit at the counter and watch the amazing speed and efficiency that occurs in a very cramped space as the servers work. It runs smoothly with a real team effort. I am always amazed at the amount of food that the servers can maneuver on huge trays without any accidents or spills or sometimes, just balanced on their arms.

I have always been treated like a visiting relative that they like to see come in the door and I can truly say I have never had one reason to complain about anything in the many years I have patronized the Buttercup in Wlanut Creek, Ca.

This is one star because there aren't "no star" ratings. Husband and I stopped in for dinner because it was very hot out and we were tired. We were seated all grouped together with others although the place was relatively empty. We had two waitresses, both of them seemed high and flakey. When the food came I took a bite, and found the cheese on my sandwich was moldy. Instead of making a fuss I just ate the rest of my food (not the sandwich) although the meal was ruined. One waitress was always hiding in a small alcove, it was impossible to get drink refills. When we got up to leave husband told the waitress about the mold, and she gasped, but didn't offer to take it off the bill or anything to compensate us. This will be the last visit to this Buttercup for us.

I stopped in here for brunch after a long night out on the town. We were seated pretty quickly; my only complaint about our booth was that I basically had to disrupt the couple sitting next to us so I could slide into my seat. The tables were that close together. When that couple left, the wife accidentally smacked me in the head with her bag. Ouch.

I ordered the chicken apple sausage with scrambled eggs, which came with hash browns and a blueberry muffin. Silly me thought I could finish all of this. So silly of me. The portions were enormous, and I couldn't finish the hash browns, eggs, or muffin. The sausage was delicious, although it was a little on the burnt side.

I also got a hot chocolate. Real whipped cream...mmmmm. But no free refills!

I'm not even a fan of breakfast, but Buttercup was pretty legit :)

Early one morning I had to go down the John Muir and get an ultra sound done of my guts. If you don't know, you have to starve yourself in order to get the procedure. Starving sucks!

Every time I have to do this I go directly to the most greasy spoon diner I can find in order to fill my gullet back up again.

This is obviously the local geriatric hang out. Which is fine because that means its quiet.

I ordered the $5.99 Breakfast Special. Two Eggs over easy Biscuits and Gravy with a side of Hash browns. Of course Coffee, lots of Coffee.

My waitress was sporadic in her visits to my table and when I really wanted some more water she was nowhere to be found. Another woman is dispersing the Coffee on a regular basis but I needed more water.

I always order my Hash browns extra crispy and I never get them extra crispy. I also got barely enough Gravy. I would throw everything else off the table I just wanted enough Gravy.

Parking is rough as well because of the court house. They have designated spots for restaurant people and I got the first one right in front.

The food was good. I was also starving so I may have had a different opinion than if I wasn't.

Thought I would be crowded seeing I was there during the mother's day rush. But they seemed to be moving the food out quick. We waited nearly 10 minutes for a seat, which was on point with there predictions. Our service was great, friendly and accommodating.

My only complaint is that my pancakes were not very fresh. It seemed that they cooked a large amount in advance and set them off, so that they would not get behind on the rush. I was hungry so I did not have time to waist complaining about it - I just ate them. Outside of that - no complaints.

3/29/12: I have to say this first: Warm, fresh bread with the "just-baked" smell radiating off of it comes prior to your meal. I love their bread! Very, very yumms!!!

A legal professional group I belong to has our monthly meeting here and I've tried salmon and chicken dinners on their prix fixe menu. It's just over $20 for the dinner and a non-alcoholic drink, but I assume that's our group rate and not sure what regular menu pricing would be.

The salmon has been wonderful! Cooked perfectly, with tender and moist pink flakes. Rice and veggies on the side for a very full plate! The boneless, skinless chicken was in a light wine sauce and while the seasoning was just right, the chicken was slightly overcooked and dry. Also, there were either large pieces of skin or fat that I had to cut off. I'll stick with the fish!
6/11/12 food update: the BEST thing I've eaten here yet is the lemon-peppered chicken. Soooo good! It had a crispy outside and was served with perfectly cooked veggies and buttery rice. Almost a little too buttery, but very tasty. You must like lemon and pepper to order this dish. They are both strong flavors that stood out, but not in a bad way. In an excellent way. EXCELLENT dish. Perfectly cooked.

No complaints on service. For a room of 30 people, our server (Tanya) consistently keeps the drinks full. She's fast. She walks quickly and takes care of all of us! Impressive! Some servers can't do this with a table of 4. She also doubles as a bartender (outside of their conference room where we meet) and makes a great Bloody Mary ($5.50). Even salts the rim (I LOVE when places do this on the Bloody Mary.) My girlfriend also enjoyed her margarita tremendously ($6.00). Though, she does use a jigger. I hate when bars do this. I don't order a drink every time we go simply for that reason. It's a very light pour for such a big glass.

All in all, good food, great service.

This place is so cute! I also love breakfast food and the fact that they serve this at all hours makes me happy :)

This location has great service! I've been here a couple times with family and so far have not been disappointed.

I've tried and enjoyed the Vegetarian Eggs Benedict, Basil Burger (season special), and the French Dip sandwich.

All were yummy and I definitely will be going back to try more things!

Had breakfast with a friend here this morning and while it was not my choice to come here (previous meh experiences), I agreed to come.

I will say our server was excellent-refilling coffee, bringing extra napkins, etc. so it gets an extra star for that. The food is fine-I had over easy eggs with decent bacon, rye toast and hash browns. The portion was huge and I put a little more than a dent in it. My friend had the special French toast and took half home. The bummer part is the use of Peerless coffee. How did that crap honestly earn an award?

I will come here again when this is what others choose but probably not by my own choice.

My boyfriend and I came here one busy Sunday brunch hour. We waited for only 5 minutes and were quickly seated at a booth. We had the new girl and she did a pretty decent job. The cute part was when she asked my boyfriend how he wanted his eggs for the Eggs benedict. : p

Their coffee hit the spot and dish of simple All-American dish with eggs, toast, and hashbrowns was comforting and definitely hardy. As I cannot never end a weekend without eating a good strong breakfast. I would definitely be back.

My boyfriend and I frequent this place often. It is our go-to breakfast spot, and we also stop in for dinner when we are being lazy and don't want to cook. Both breakfast and dinner have great choices. It's all comfort food here. I love it! I am always stuffed when I leave and the prices are pretty good. Overall, if you want a no-frills spot for comfort food, go here! They are usually pretty dead on week nights, so your food comes really fast!

My breakfast favorite: Eggs benedict
My bf's breakfast favorite: Bacon, sausage and cheese omlette

My favorite dinner item: Chicken and biscuit
My bf's fav. dinner item: Country fried steak

(We're a healthy couple, huh?)

Also, drinks are pretty cheap. Their blended margaritas are so delish, you'll wonder "where's the alcohol!?"

Buttercup for the win!

I'm a somewhat regular of this Buttercup and really enjoy going there with friends. It has a small town, hometown atmosphere - the wait staff gets to know you pretty well.

We usually sit in Debbie's section and she makes sure that we are taken care of. Always knows what everyone wants to drink, my companions usually order the same thing, so she has this down pat - for me, I like a little variety and she takes it all in great stride! Fun personality that really adds to the experience!

The food is pretty decent and there is variety with the seasonal menu, the breakfast is the thing to go for. Never had a bad meal or anything that disagreed with me.

It is a place that definitely is a regular spot, not just for me and my friends, but I see the same people there time and again - that speaks volumes for a restaurant.

Nothing fancy, but it certainly does the job. Sitting out on the deck, enjoying the fall morning, and the super-friendly helpful waitress quickly took and delivered our order. My hon of hons husband had the Eggs Benedict and I had the Huevos Rancheros. Yes, I know BG&B is not a Mexican restaurant, but who do you think is doing the cooking?

Eggs Benedict were fabulous - I actually think the hollandaise sauce might've been homemade - GASP! Huevos were delicious, but I should've told them to hold he sour cream and guacamole. We waddled out of there 30 minutes later, stuffed and content and ready to conquer the DVC Farmer's Market!

Thanks Buttercup Grill & Bar!

This is probably my favorite breakfast place in the East Bay and also my husband's. I usually get their waffle combo with the cajun sausage. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. I look forward to Saturday mornings because of this breakfast :) The waffles are light and delicious! I can never seem to get this consistency at home...sigh.

We have visited this location multiple times and the server already knows us. I've also tried their omelettes (I forgot which one though) and pancakes. The pastrami sandwich is also great! I haven't been disappointed in their food at all. All of my visits have been very satisfactory. The food is presented very well and they give you a lot for a great price. Most of the time, I have to have a take-home bag because I couldn't finish my food and that's saying a lot if you know how much I eat...LOL

You'l never leave hungry. In fact, I don't eat until later in the day when I have breakfast here.

I'm a fan of this place because of the following:

Fantastic French Toast - you can't go wrong with getting their full plate which is more than enough, or their combo with egg and bacon. So tasty with a hint of vanilla, plenty of powdered sugar. You are definitely are eating a great recipe.

Salad & Ranch dressing - Their ranch dressing is definitely at the top of my list. Not that generic in the bottle taste. Fresh ranch goodness, over any salad is a good thing.

BLT&A sandwich: Excellent.

Very friendly staff - Looking forward to getting back soon

Good food, decent portions and good prices. Overall, Buttercup Grill's fare is far above what I'd expect from a diner. Their French Dip in particular is one of the best I've had, excepting perhaps the one from Claim Jumper. So far, every other French Dip I've had in Walnut Creek is bland and made with roast beef instead of Prime Rib.

It loses a star for poor service. The waitress was rude, impatient and slow. She openly criticized my wife's meal choices and never bothered to mask her frustration, especially when I had the gall to order a latte at the last second. A couple who left the restaurant as we entered openly accused the waitress of being a b**ch before they walked out.

If I believed this waitress was representative of the restaurant as a whole, I would downrate it further. For the moment, I'll assume it was the exception rather than the rule.

Meh ! I have been there for breakfast twice and the first time was an "ok" 3-star experience.

The omelettes are decent and nothing to complain about but there was nothing to warrant their higher prices either. The eggs were not salted enough so it tasted bland and the stuffings were ordinary too. The first time around I had the hash browns and they were really really greasy. I do know for a fact that hash browns are by definition pretty greasy dishes but this one outdid the others (if you love butter than you might like as it seems to have been cooked in butter, or something buttery).

The second time, today, was 'to go' and I specifically asked them to remove the cheddar cheese. And when I got home to eat --- no prizes for guessing but there were all these yucky gooey cheddar cheese inside my omelette. Thanks for killing my breakfast !!!
I know there's nothing wrong with Cheddar but honestly I *UGH* cheese in my food (except Pizza) --- not even on my pasta !

Learning experience from today: I expected the "Ore-ida potatoes" to be like home-fries but instead it was more like hash. That didn't help my breakfast much (though it's not their fault) either.

Anyways, the long and short of it ?
I'm not going there again thank you very much!

When a friend suggested that we eat at "Buttercup" I imagined a super trendy, fun, bistro. When we arrived, I was slightly disappointed. It was very Bakers Square-ish. Oh well.

They have a pretty diverse breakfast menu, however, it was 1045am, and I felt more like lunch. The waitress gladly brought the lunch menu. I ordered a patty melt, and it was not so great. But service was good and fast, and a lot of other things on the menu sounded pretty good. Prices were very fair.

I'd come here again to try something else, since I can't complain about making a poor menu selection.

Needed yet again another "senior citizen friendly" restaurant today in downtown Walnut Creek vicinity w/ my pops & sis visting me for lunch, sooo we made our way over to Buttercup Grill & Bar http://www.yelp.com/biz_… In addition to Marie Callender's in the area, Buttercup is sooo fricken "senior citizen friendly".

LOCATION: Right off of Ygnacio Valley Blvd that crosses N.Civic Dr, & shares the parking lot w/ the local Courthouse...not hard to miss. Very spacious restaurant, outdoor patio http://www.yelp.com/biz_… , & large-clean bthrms *kudos*. There's a small bar area w/ 1 TV hanging up in the corner w/ sports...the place was fairly crowded also.

SERVICE: Awesome! Our waitress-Nancy was everything you want...polite, patient, thorough, prompt, & w/ smiles. Nancy had a handle on all the tables she was tending too, so I can't advise on teamwork as we never had to get anyone else's help...so big ups to Nancy ;-)

FOOD: Everything was just ok, nothing to brag. Pops had the Buttercup Burger http://www.yelp.com/biz_… , sis & I split a half order Caesar Salad http://www.yelp.com/biz_… , sis had the Avacado Burger w/ Potato Salad http://www.yelp.com/biz_… & I had the Monterey Chicken Sandwich w/ Curley Fries http://www.yelp.com/biz_… . Sis & I could taste the char on our sandwich; I'd say my chckn tasted dry, but was complimented w/ the tomato, pesto mayo, & avacado...actually I was only able to eat 1/2 of my sandwich too..exceptionally larger than both burgers. Reg & Curley Fries were good...weren't drowing in salt *kudos*.

Final tab w/ salad & 3 entrees came to about $35 bucks. Would I come back...sure.

Imagine being in San Francisco and making the huge mistake to eat dinner in our suburb while passing Absinthe, Zuni Cafe, Citizen Cake, etc. .

Somehow after trying to park at Fentons in Oakland and Chow in Lafayette, we regrettably ended up at this dump.

Being new to the area, I didnt want to judge it too bad, but I knew just looking through the window, with the 70's decor, and average age being 80 that it was probably going to be funky food.

The menu was horrible. There was nothing on it that I wanted to eat. Everything was either fried or dripping in some nasty sauce. It was a diner style restaurant with very low quality ingredients.

We finally settled on the turkey dinner and the meatloaf dinner. They came with a salad. When it was brought out, the lettuce was completely brown w/ maybe 20% of the lettuce being green. They did exchange it for a new one, but it just consisted of iceberg lettuce and stale crutons.

While eating the salad, the entrees came out. Everything on my plate was rubbery and inedible including the broccoli. The mashed potatoes were sticky and the meatloaf literally made me gag.

My husbands turkey he said tasted like a tire and the stuffing was stovetop quality, while the cranberry sauce was flavorless...he didnt try the cream spinach because it was a greyish brown color. He just told me this was the worst meal he ever had. I just hope we dont wake up with the you know whats in the morning.

I really dont understand how places like this stay in business. Well, this is what we get for letting our GARMIN GPS system choose our restaurant. I wish yelp synched up to garmins restaurant suggestions so we wouldnt make another mistake like this again.

We went here the other night and while staring at the menu for 10 minutes I realized that there's not only not enough food choices on it, but nothing sounded even remotely good.

I've eaten here so many times that truthfully I'm sick to death of their haphazard 2-star microwave-food-is-better cuisine. The service is always a shot in the dark and I'm sorry, but if the food sucks and the service sucks there's no reason to even go to a restaurant. So yes, no more Buttercup.

I don't think my body is a temple, but if I am going to eat food that is bad for me, I want it to taste good and be made well - I love diners and greasy spoons that use good ingredients!

I went here for a meeting. Plenty of parking. The staff greeted us and knew where to take us right away. We had a great private room with closing doors. The drink server assigned to our room was very shy, so we just started forcing drink orders on him. A long and strange dance began of him bringing in cups, filling them with a pitcher at the table, going to get another pitcher, then more cups, then another pitcher, then more cups...

Salads were brought in first, which were boring... until I got about 1/2 way done with mine and found wilted lettuce mixed in. I used to work in restaurants and yes, you do mix in the old salad with the new at cheaper restaurants... but not disgusting old. The bread was warm and tasted fine, so I started eating that.

Then the snapper. I was pretty hungry, so I ate most of my meal despite thinking it wasn't something I'd want to eat again. I left about 1/2 of my rice and a few obviously brown and spoiled broccoli heads. The fish was moist - but that was only because it was soaked in butter. Not a good, rich, cooking technique - more like a "I just defrosted this thing and butter is all I have, so I'll just ladle some over to cover up not actually being a cook". Not healthy, but I had skipped lunch and as a guest of this group, I didn't feel I could send it back and get something else (especially since our hosts had ordered the same and seemed to be ok with it).

-here is the key point-

I've thought about what else I ate on Wednesday and on Thursday, but it all was either things I keep in bulk and eat all the time or meals I shared with someone else. It is possible something else I ate on Thursday was contaminated, but I worked in kitchens for years, so I tend to notice if something seems off or poorly stored or handled. I suspect this restaurant gave me food poisoning. I truly had food poisoning, not just a little indigestion. My husband had to come home to take care of me on Friday and now, 3 days later, I'm still not eating much.

Even if I hadn't gotten sick, I wasn't planning on going back again because the food was so bad and obviously not fresh. I talked to one other person who went to the meeting and she was fine, so maybe I did just get the flu... but I think that is unlikely, since I don't know anyone who had this "flu" and have not given it to anyone I know of.

Totally decent diner for big American meals. Where else can you get big fluffy pancakes and a BBQ burger before you go down the street to Yoshis jazz club? (As an aside, if you are going to Yoshis you will probably choose to eat dinner there beforehand, for the whole more-upscale-than-a-diner sushi and jazz Yoshis experience...)

But if you do come to this diner for good comfort food you shouldn't be disappointed. It's a Dennys/IHOP sort of thing, if you've seen one of these you've seen most of them. But it's friendly and hits the spot when you're tired of sushi (is it possible?). Come here, feel good, order big plates, consider the desserts... but don't make a habit of it, or your poor heart will tremble...
