We had a catered in house event at this CJ Muggs location. Upon arrival and during the event the prices WERE NOT what we were quoted. We had the same issue a few years ago when we had an catered event there. Then the staff claimed they had "NO IDEA" about any quoted prices from the owner. We thought as a returning customer we would be cut a decent deal. We actually paid MORE then we would of had we walked in off the street that day with our group.  Then upon leaving the manager over the "servers" had the nerve to chase us down down the street and demand we leave a bigger tip. (JERRY). This guy (JERRY) had NOTHING to do with our party and this might of been the RUDEST experience a restaurant employee has ever done to someone. He literally came up to my trunk as I was loading my children into the car and DEMANDED that we tip more. (His comments "We ask for at least a 25 % tip with a group of 15 or more"). Mind you we left a tip, and the last time I checked any amount of a tip is optional. (NO we did SKIMP on the tip)
DON'T GO HERE, dont help out the owner SAM who stays out of anything either make ANY MORE MONEY!

I cannot believe this person came out AFTER we had paid and left a tip and demanded MORE! Get a life JERRY!

Another ho-hum dinner, a stone's throw from superior competitors.  Regarding the cleanliness, I will let the St. Louis County Department of Health Inspection do the talking for me:

    Inspection date: May 10
    Grade: A (93)

Can opener and ice machine baffle soiled with food debris
Walk-in cooler and freezer soiled with food debris and trash
    Dish station caulking missing
    Cutting boards have deep crevices
Standing water in bottom of reach-in coolers
Outdoor garbage receptacle lid left open
Downstairs floors soiled with trash and debris
Dry storage room ceiling has hole
Flooring in kitchen has missing and broken tiles

Free food happy hours are the only reason I go to either Clayton or Webster Groves.

Service is usually friendly, but expect to wait to order drinks.

Food is nothing more than greasy bar food, despite claims it is any fancier than bar food.

If you want to have cheap happy hour with a couple old friends, this is the place.  For dates or nice nights out, go elsewhere.

Stopped in for lunch with a friend today and took in the great weather on the patio. The food was good, I had the Grilled Chicken Club, however I could hardly see nor taste the tomato garlic aioli, not even sure that they remembered to put on my sandwich. Now with that being said the chicken was good, and made for a good sandwich however I was wanting the extra taste that was lacking.

The service was so-so, at times it was slow when the restaurant wasn't overly busy inside. Our waitress was nice however I was disappointed on how long it took to get the check after she took our plates.

CJ Muggs is dependable. I venture there with my college buddies once a year and every year it's quality. It is a cute standard neighborhood bar and grill. I would highly recommend this place if you have parents in town or a stick in the mud friend. You can show them how cute Webster Groves is and go to a nice restaurant that Dad won't snip at when he sees the menu. Now if you are up for adventure, this is not really your place. If you want to go to a place that will have you focus on the conversation and beer, CJ Muggs is, again, like I said, dependable.

Just returned from dinner here.  I would have to agree with many of the previous posters, that there was nothing particularly special, either good or bad, about the food.  If not for the service, I would not have written a review one way or the other.

However, the service was terrible.  After ordering, we waited for 40 minutes with no food and no update on the status of our food, at which time we asked the waitress how much longer it would be.  She told us she would put a "rush" on it for us (little late for that).  Another 10 minutes passed before our food was delivered.  Sometime prior to the food being delivered, I ordered a second beer.  The beer was not delivered until 15 minutes after requesting it, and only after having to ask for it again.  I will not be back again, unless I just have a whole day to kill.

We were excited to try CJ Muggs the other day and we were not disappointed.

The Webster location is close to our house and I love the ambiance of the city and it was quite easy to find.  Our date day did not disappoint at the restaurant.  We were seated immediately, had great service and the food was some of the best I have had in a long time.

We will certainly be back in the future, esp to check out the weekend crowd and entertainment we heard they have.

Went here for dinner while in Webster groves but didn't end getting anything but an appetizer and leaving.

    1. Drinks are terrible, thursdays are 'margarita night' I'm pretty sure my margarita was Minute Maid Lemonade mixed with tequila, whatever it was tasted like sugar and nothing like a margarita. My fiancees Mojito was a sugarbomb, basically tasted like a glass full of simple syrip wiht mint leaves.

    2. Menu has essentially nothing on it for someone who is lactose intolerant and doesn't eat meat, everything that wasn't meat was full of cheese or cream and when you pull those out of dishes that center around it they typically taste terrible.

We ordered some Hummus because we felt bad and it was good although the tapenade that came with it was not.  Its sad that places feel like they can't make good food without adding lots of fat to a recipe (heavy cream&cheese). I certainly wouldn't come here for drinks, I'm sure some of food is probably good if not run of the mill and uninspired.

I have been coming to this place for years.   It is a regular meeting place for friends, families or even co-workers for Happy Hour.  From the first time I started coming, it reminded me of the ol Cheers bar on TV.  After only coming a couple of times the bartenders knew my drink of choice and my name.  The service and quality is top notch.

I have also brought others here for the first time and had many of meals on the restaurant side.  The service is top notch and always friendly.  This is are always go-to place if we are out and about and can't decide where to go.

The girlfriend and I went there for a quick dinner before heading home to watch the Cards game on TV.  Great feel for an "Irish Bar",  lots of dark wood and brass.  The outside seating looks nice too but was too cold to try.  I ordered the Cajun chicken sandwich, but the waitress brought out a Buffalo chicken.  I didn't really care because it looked delicious and it was- large chicken breast deep fried to perfection!  The girlfriend had some kind of spicy chicken and shrimp pasta which was also good, but only had 3 pieces of shrimp.  Didn't bother me as I fed off her plate and didn't eat the shrimp (I dont care for shrimp).

CJ Muggs serves its purpose to fill you up and put you right back on the couch...

I like this location in old Webster Groves.  It's on a busy but not too busy street, so it can be nice to sit outside or inside near the many windows.

I love the rolls they bring out with the unique butter spread.

Pizzas have a pretty interesting crust that remind of some Chicago style pizzas - not that the pizzas are thick, but the taste reminds me of Chicago style dough.

I think I've enjoyed all of the sandwiches I've ever had - BBQ sandwich is one I get regularly when I come here.

This place is a great spot for girlfriends or for a lunch or dinner date with your plus one. I met up one of my girlfriends to grab some dinner this past Wednesday night and my experience at this Webster Groves location was pretty much perfect. I have been to the Clayton location numerous of times and enjoyed it thus I decide to try this one out.

We ended up sitting outside on their patio since it was so nice outside and we both ended up getting their salads as our main entree. My friend ordered their main house salad while I ordered their large Greek salad. It was your typical Greek salad with olives and feta but their dressing was quite tangy, which I liked a lot. I will definitely come back to this location!

This CJ Muggs gets 4 starts instead of 3 because they had a jazz/blues band there on the Saturday night we went. They were awesome!

This CJ Muggs, like the one in Clayton, has a large but usual bar food menu. The prices are average, the service is average, yet the atmosphere is classier than the usual neighborhood bar. This one particularly had a more upscale vibe, but probably due to the fact that we strolled in after our Mardi Gras celebrating downtown desperate for a hot meal and were in our winter gear and beads. We probably looked like a mess.

I would come back here again to check out more live music and their killer happy hour and late night drink specials.

Come for the Martini's, stay for the fun.
CJ Muggs is tucked deep into Webster Groves.  It is a way out of the way place for those that are not too far away.  They cater to locals.  It is pricey, but we come here to gather because it was very close to work.  The staff is friendly and the bar maiden makes great Martini's.

Trivia: Happy hour food may come in as; toasted ravioli, pizza, or hot wings.

The menu offers pizza, burgers, Cajun dishes, and pasta and more.  Muggs is a place where memories are celebrated.

CJ Muggs is your standard 3-star restaurant. It's OK, not terrible, but nothing over-the-top outstanding either. I've been to the Webster Groves location a handful of times and it's always sort of "meh".

Last night I met up with some West County friends, as we live an hour away from each other and Webster seems to be a good middle ground. We were seated right away, but they were severely understaffed that night so it took quite awhile to get menus, let alone have our food order taken. And my friend brought her (adorable!) baby and the high chair she was given was broken - the seat belt did not fasten properly so she had to keep her baby on her lap until a someone else with a rugrat left their table.

I don't think people come to CJ Muggs to be wowed by the staff or the decor - it's their food that keeps customers coming back. It's reasonably priced, tastes pretty good and isn't too bad for you. My favorite is the buffalo chicken sandwich, their house salads are also pretty good. And what's up with that delicious butter they serve with the hard rolls? It's addicting!

But I just can't get over how this place is always busy - is it THAT good? Are customers treated terribly awesome? I'm just not sure...

CJ Muggs is a fun place and I love the atomosphere.  The interior is filled with tin ceiling tiles, big warm wood panels and decorative antique chandeliers and local art throughout.  It feels like a pub/gentlemens club.  The people in the kitchen know what they are doing and everything seems either locally purchased or scratch made so the ingredients are fresh and tasty.  Located in Webster Groves this place makes for a wonderful spot for an afternoon lunch to watch people and relax with a beer.  Great for girl's days, families, couples and big groups.  This place manages to feel initmate and bustling all at once.

This place is good for a family who wants a large selection of items, but I think it is too much money for something generic.

Also - they are not dog-friendly, and I mean this in two ways! One, they do not let dogs onto their patio. And Two, the waitress actually kicked my dog away. I have a 10 pound pekingese - he wasn't doing anything wrong or disruptive.

I personally try to avoid this place as much as possible, but my grandpa likes it so I have to tolerate their over priced food and bad service.

The idea is genius but the execution is poor. Main street bar with cafe and open air sounds superb! This one however has slow service, ghastly smoke and food that has made me feel sick every time I've eaten. Save ur tummy... Go to llewellyns.

Bottom Line:  Way overpriced, I think, for what it is.  Nothing stands out here.

My friend and I had the spinach and artichoke dip.  It was not bad, but a bit heavy on the cheese.  I was happy they serve the appetizer with both tortilla and pita chips (toasted, I believe).  I think I like the pita chips best.

The hamburger and fries I had were just OK.  I had the "Saint Louis Blues" burger because I was in the mood for blue cheese.  It had bacon on it, as well.  Just kind of "the usual".

The bill came, and that is what kind of punched me in the chest.  Two beers (Bass Ale), appetizer, and entree came up to $30 sans tip.

Gordon Ramsey has mentioned that a restaurant with a big selection on the menu is a warning flag.  It seems like when a restaurant does too much, it can't keep high standards on everything.  I have to agree and this place throws that flag.

I will go back to CJ Muggs, if it is convenient, but I won't be having a full meal.

I was conflicted between a 3 and a 4 here.  I felt like I was eating at a Denny's with a liquor license.  I know that sounds like an awesome night, but the service here was kinda slow, the place was kinda dead, and the dining room a little messy.  The food was pretty good though, so I'm not at all opposed to going back.

The food is pretty good here I have to say.

If you are going to start with an appetizer i would do the hummus(best i've ever had seriously), the crab cakes(also the best i've ever had), or the bruschetta (it's a little untraditional but still tasty!)

All of the salads are pretty yummy, except the greek... it's kinda boring. For sandwiches, all are pretty exceptional, especially the Cajun chix sandwich, turkey club, and chix salad sandwich.

The pizza isn't their strongest thing on the menu, but it's edible. Their pastas are pretty good, especially the bowtie chix and Cajun pasta(yummy). Don't ever order their risotto... it's boring and flavorless... and not true risotto.

Their meatloaf is awesome! and I don't even like meatloaf really.

As for the bar, they have a pretty decent selection of local brews, drafts, and non-domestic beers. Liquor selection is quite extensive. Wine, not so much.

For the most part the prices are pretty reasonable, but they charge extra for anything and everything you want that is not served w/ your meal i.e sauces and extra dressing (come on really?)

As for the atmosphere, it's usually a ghost town except on a fri. and sat. when they have local bands playing.. and unfortunately, they are local for a reason (my 3 month old has more talent on a microphone then some of these ppl).

service is decent. There is 1 bartender that is kinda snobby and mean and tends to neglect her patrons i have noticed. Other than that, Muggs is okay in my book.

PS - did anyone notice how many times i said "pretty"? I need some adjectives ppl.

I agree with the previous reviewers.  If you have a large group of varied ages who need to get an affordable dinner, CJ Muggs isn't a bad place to try.  They have a pretty extensive menu of choices and they do also offer a kid's menu.  However, nothing there has ever knocked my socks off.  The pasta dishes are all pretty bland and the pasta seems overcooked.

I will say something about the children's menu though---it's not great as far as choices.  Sometimes you see children's menus that are fairly healthy and have a good variety of choices and other times it's a chicken fingers or hot dog kind of place---this is the latter.  I'd love the option of a fruit cup for my son or maybe a small bowl of plain pasta--something other than fries and chicken strips.

I don't think I'll be going back to CJ Muggs anytime soon.  It's not a horrible place, but absolutely nothing stands out about it.  It has sort of a musty/old smoke smell to it and something about it didn't feel completely clean.  This is really nit-picky, but I hate when restaurants use black cloth napkins.  It's impossible to tell if they're clean or not.

On the plus side, our server was very nice and pretty attentive.  I tried the salsiccia and pepper pizza and that was pretty good, too.  Otherwise, the house salad was pretty average.  On the negative side, there were these tiny, gross gnats that kept flying around our bread basket and I found one crawling on my lemon that was on my water glass.  Just one more thing that added to the uncleanliness feel of the place.

The only phrase I can think of that sums up my experience with CJ Muggs is  "meh, not bad."

Every aspect of my restaurant experience was by no means negative, but neither was any particular feature distinguishable from the white background noise of memory. The service is competent. Sometimes it's extremely attentive and sometimes lax to the point of pseudo-neglect. The dining areas are bright, comfortable and clean, but the atmosphere has a bland 'Cheers' atmosphere that fits the image of a sleepy bar from years gone by.

And the food is, well, it's good but it's not memorable. This time I had the 5 cheese and chorizo quesadilla and it came out in a relatively short amount of time, seemed to be well prepared and tasted pretty good... but again there was nothing about it that really left deep impressions in my mind. I can't even quibble about the price/portion ratio.

Overall I'd put CJ's about 2 bars above Applebees. Great if you're in the neighborhood and don't really know what you want. But I'd wouldn't set it as a high priority  on a list of "Places I just gotta try."

Went today for a light lunch with Andy.

I had the hummus plate. It's an appetizer, but I wasn't very hungry, so I just had that for my entree. It's pretty good! Lots of pita bread, a huge amount of hummus, and olive tapenade and feta cheese. YUM!

Andy had pizza, and opted for andouille sausage and broccoli for his toppings. I had a bite, and it was pretty good. Not amazing, but decent.

Service was alright. Our waitress wasn't super attentive, but I'm fine with that. The place was pretty empty on a Saturday afternoon, which may or may not say something about the place.

I'm not dying to come back here, but I wouldn't be opposed to visiting again.

P.S. Try their homemade potato chips. They are absolutely AMAAAAZING!

We were looking for a place we don't eat at often. CJ Muggs was open and offered a fairly pleasant atmosphere, not too loud or busy.

The wait staff was very nice and did not rush the lunch service. Our waitress was relaxed and friendly, and she did not seem concerned with N and I taking our time to mull over the menu. She brought us drinks and let us enjoy our menu in peace.

We ordered an appetizer first. We ordered the bruschetta ($7.79). I enjoyed the overall dish. The topping was really good. It was a mixture of sundried tomatoes, kalamata olives, feta, garlic, artichokes and olive oil. The flavors were strong and enjoyable. I particularly liked the play between the feta, olives and tomatoes. The mixture was a bit wet, but I enjoyed that. Unfortunately, while the bread was good, it was not what one expects in bruschetta; it was a bit soft or undertoasted.

N ordered one of the specials which was a half order of chicken wings and a salad. He had the choice of a house salad and a Caesar; he chose the house with the house dressing, a creamy garlic. The salad looked good, with lots of toppings, but N said it was just ok. His wings were not dropped on time in the kitchen and were just a bit late coming to the table. The manager took the initiative to send a full order of wings to our table without any discussion. I was impressed by the gesture that certainly wasn't necessary, but was appreciated. N liked the chicken wings and brought the extras home. Though we are not big leftover eaters, N ate the chicken wings the next day for lunch. That says a lot to me!

For my lunch, I ordered the roast beef sandwich ($8.99) with provel. My sandwich came with a choice of sides, and I went with the fries. The sandwich came on a really nice French bread that tasted like a light garlic bread with herbs. The roast beef was not amazing. It was sliced thicker than what I was expecting, and it was a bit tough. I asked them to add the provel. It is not on the menu that way. That was my mistake. The provel was a bit too powerful for the sandwich overall. The au jus was pretty good, but it didn't do much against the tough meat. I really love good french fries. The french fries at CJ Muggs have good potential, but they didn't quite make it. They were seasoned well, but the fries themselves were a bit limp. I didn't bring my leftovers home.

Overall, our meal at CJ Muggs- Webster Groves provided a better environment for chatting than food, but we enjoyed ourselves. Our waitress kept our glasses full and was discreet in her service at the table. We felt attended to, but not like we had a third member of our party! If I returned to CJ Muggs, I would definitely have the bruschetta again, but I would try a different entree.

I usually go to CJ Muggs for lunch since it is near my work. I think much of their menu is overpriced, but they have a good variety and evertyhing I've eaten (or seen my friends eat) has been great. High quality food and usually good service. I like the heavy wood featured in the restaurant and the fact that they display the work of local artists (for sale too). I HIGHLY recommend their turkey burger! They season it very well, which many places forget to do (I don't know why people assume you must like bland food if you prefer turkey vs. beef burgers). The burgers are thick, peppery, savory, and just delcious. The BBQ turkey burger is great too, but super messy. I love their fries and they give you tons of them. I'll keep coming back for the turkey burger.

I like CJ Muggs for lunch.  They have a hummus plate that is pretty tasty.  The goat cheese pizza is yums as well!   Oh, and the salads are big and full!

It's small so it can get really crowded on weekends but it's fun.  Service is pretty good too.

The first review really freaked me out though! I hope they don't put stuff in goat cheese pizza and hummus!!!

I went here for the first time in probably 5 years a few nights ago, and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I like the space and the ambiance, as well as the all-black outfits worn by the staff. Classy, but not pretentious.

We got in easily on a Friday night. I had a Bass from the tap which tasted a little funny, and our waitress swapped it for a Boddington's, no questions asked. I got the ginormous (wow, Firefox recognizes that as a word!) bacon bleu cheese burger and it was everything I hoped for. Some of the fries were a little dark, but there were so many that I was still able to enjoy as many as I wanted and have some to share. My companions had the pineapple and ham pizza, and a pasta dish. I tried the pizza and it was very tasty, and I'm not a pineapple guy. I'm sure I'll be back next time I'm in Webster Groves.

As bars and restaurants in Webster go, this is certainly one of my favorites.  It does not have the same grittiness that you find at Weber's, and it's not as nice and airy as Llewlyn's, but the menu is huge, and will basically serve to satisfy anyone's taste.

My family isn't huge, but we are a diverse little group.  Also, with a young baby in the family, we always need to be on the lookout for places that aren't smoky, that are kid friendly, and that aren't so loud that the baby gets upset.  This place fits the bill perfectly for an early dinner.  The waiters are awesome, very attentive, and will run back and forth to bring you whatever you order.  The food comes out fast and it's hot when it gets to you.  As I said before, the menu is diverse and has a ton of options.  I love the fajita salad (sans the meat and sour cream), but the white mushroom pizza is amazing as well.  I am also a huge fan of the portobella panini.  All these things are vegetarian and delicious.   Don't worry, there are plenty of carnivorous options as well, ranging from huge burgers to almond crusted salmon.  Everything from fancy to standard bar fare is found here.

In nice weather, they will open up the front windows, making you feel like you are really eating in open air.  This is great since the atmosphere is pretty dim, though not depressing.  Also, the bathrooms are in the basement, which is something I will always complain about regardless of how good the rest of the establishment may be.

This is also a great place to start your night with a few appetizers and beers among friends.  This place is not cheap and you will pay nearly $6 for a Guinness, but if you don't plan on spending the whole night drinking here, the bill won't break you (too much).

CJ Muggs has a huge menu! It can be a bit daunting, actually. I've found that pretty much everything on the menu is okay (not great), but I love the cheese and chorizo quesadilla. I think CJ Muggs does most of its business from catering events, so their dining room isn't anything to write home about either. All in all, an okay place to go but nothing seriously special.

C J Muggs is a cool enough place, but it kind of has an identity crisis - which isn't a bad thing.  Visit during the day and you will find it somewhere between a casual to elegant restaurant.  Your chair will be pulled out for you and you will be handed a menu.  Visit during the night, especially on a weekend, and you will find a rowdy crowd and live music.  C J Muggs is surprisingly large inside, with a central bar on the left side of the restaurant.  You'll find numerous heavy wood tables throughout.  The food is American, and is average yet tasty.

I was first introduced to C J Muggs through a local band who was playing there.  The crowd was vibrant, young and it was a great time.  My fiance and I recently went with another couple, and we felt a little out of place.  We happened to go at 6pm during the week, and oddly the rest of the patrons were all well dressed and in their 50s-60s.  The reason I mention this is that it could be quite confusing to future visitors.
