I'm sorry...I'm all about steals and deals...but this place gives horrible, horrible service. My boyfriend and I came here for the $4.99 all you can eat tacos, but 4 hours later, we're pretty much regretting it...4 hours you're probably thinking, "oh they must be enjoying the vibes and entertainment!" ...quite the contrary, we've been sitting here for 4 hours waiting to be seen and served. The manager started us off, but the server taking care of our section never looked at us once! ...Not to mention he got our drink order wrong. -__- We let the manager know that our server hadn't come around to check on us and he seemed to turn it over to a more "seasoned" server. Excitedly, we sighed with relief, like: "Finally! We'll be shown some attention!!!" ...again, we were quite disappointed. We sat for another 45 minutes, waiting for someone to take our order...I mean 2 for 1 specials almost makes up for inadequate service...but that's definitely a stretch...you're still getting unacceptable service, so you're stuck with frustration and regret for sitting at a table for 4 hours, starving for attention and drinks...the tacos are good, but not enough for us to consider ourselves regulars and return...sorry Cabo Cantina, you let us down.......this isn't our first rodeo, it's happened time and time again. Yelp won't allow me to give it zero stars, so I'm forced to give it at least one.
Review Source:I love coming here for their happy hour. Â They have two for one drinks. Â I also just tried their rice bowl this past weekend, which was AMAZING!!! Â The servers are cute and sweet. Â The only problem I've ever had with this place is the bartenders attitude. Â It never fails... every single time I order drinks from the bar, the bartenders are always so rude!! I don't understand, if you hate your job, QUIT!!!! Can management please do something about this... I'd hate to stop coming here because of them.
Review Source:Came here on a Wednesday afternoon on a spontaneous beach trip. The place looked like a typical on the beach joint with a Cabo like feel and a loose tropical theme going on. The place looked a little run down but it wasn't dirty or anything. The decor was friendly and the crowd seemed very chill. Overall a pretty comfortable and relaxing setting for a drink by the beach.
I ordered the surf and turf tacos which were steak and shrimp tacos with pico de gallo. It was much better than I expected it to be. Quite delicious. Steak was pretty tender and shrimp was delicious too. My friend ordered the quesadilla and it was good, although I enjoyed my dish much more. It had a hefty serving too so we ended up taking half the quesadilla togo. We also ordered shots here which were around 8 bucks each which was a little more than I anticipated. The overall bill with two beers two plates and two shots came out to around 50 bucks. It wasn't too bad and the service was decent. But the dishes weren't jaw dropping or anything. Along with the decent service and the tad expensive shots, a solid 3 stars. Good place for a quick stop for a shot or a bite to eat on the beach. Happy Yelping!
Great local bar despite the reviews. It's a great dive bar where everybody knows everyone. Their happy hour is wonderful with 2 for 1 specials on drinks. Their nachos and chicken tacos are amazing. It's more of a locals bar. If your a tourist then maybe the Cannary is more of what you are looking for (on the swank level). For a locals bar this place is awesome and the location is phenomenal.
Review Source:Very sports bar-y, which is totally fine because that's what it is! The windows are open to the beach, music is blaring playing anything from Britney Spears to Tom Petty, flat screen tvs flashing baseball games, baseball games, NASCAR, and baseball games, bright signage boasting drink & food specials are plastered everywhere, and patrons generally having a good time.
We were there mid-week in the early afternoon. We came specifically for drinks. We each ordered margaritas - I had the Cozumels Key Lime; my husband had the T.J. Classic. We both "mega'd" our margaritas which is basically making them gigantic 36 oz. Patron sized versions for an extra 5 bucks each. We shared an order of Muchos Nachos that we piled high with toppings (black beans, sour cream, guacamole, cheeses, & pico) and plenty of jalapenos.
The service was better than I expected from a sports bar -- we were greeted right away by a friendly staff and our waitress checked on us quite a few times to make sure we were doing good. This is a cliche, tourist-geared place that is actually a great spot to sit, talk, and enjoy drinks & food, all while you look out over the beautiful Newport Beach.
We were planning on taking a duffy out for the day of boatin and boozing and figured we would start our Saturday with the boozing. It was around 11ish and we walked in to Cabo Cantina.
It's teeny, the walls are plastered in colorful caricatures of six-packed men and coke-bottle women. Space is rather cramped and interestingly there's a neon green accented beer pong table. Definitely a happening place to be if you're looking for a dive bar kinda night.
We started off with a round of drinks: beers, sangria, margaritas, mimosas. When in Rome right? We ordered a plate of chips (delicious texture and crunch), guacamole and salsa -loved both as well. Drinks needed a bit more oomph though, ok maybe lots more oomph.
After a few more drinks, we finally ventured into food. I got the steak fajitas and chorizo breakfast plate, the rest got shrimp tacos, a burrito and chilaquiles. Our meals were delicious overall, but wasn't feeling their chilaquiles. The fajitas were rather greasy, but I'd eat it again if you put a plate of it in front of me. LOL
Good times, great food, ok drinks.
2 for 1 happy hour is great since they do a strong pour anyway. Â We've only eaten the nachos here, but we highly recommend them. Â Finding parking here can be a pain, but it is right on the boardwalk, so the location is great. Â Can be a bit busy and loud. Â Many TVs to watch all the games.
Review Source:Pretty good place. Food is decent. Â Drinks are good. Â Try the adios mother**** if you want to try something new. Â TIP: Â Get there M-F at about 3:00 and grab a window seat. Â Only way to do it. Â If there isn't a window seat (with amazing views of the boardwalk and ocean) then I go over to either the harborside or Newport Landing. Â Just looking for the best place to hang out. Â Those be the rounds people! Â Enjoy the fun zone and for crap sake - have some fun!
Review Source:Sure if you're into dirty bars with sticky menus and sticky tables. Sleaze is written all over this place, but hell, why the fuck not. They have a huge coronarita (or some people call it a beergarita) which is plenty to share with another person. Flirt with the not-so-cute bartender and he'll probably add in an extra patron shot in there later. It's enough margarita sweetness to add another beer too if you get a big one.
Unless you want to stay inside and get sloshed instead of actually going out in the sun and play in the sand, don't come here. Given the choice, I probably wouldn't have come but i was at the call of others.
Happy hour is awesome!
buy one drink and get the other one FREE!! ( any drink)
Needless to say, after 3 drinks of Coffee Patron I was done and ready to go!
Fun, party atmosphere beats the other surrounding bars/restaurants around us by far!
they have an extensive amount of different deals- from happy hour to bottomless mimosas (just has to order a 5 dollar or more meal for the 10 dollar deal) Â All the drinks i tried there had been well made and delicious...hence how i got drunk!
I am a snob and won't take anything unless it taste yummy!
fun fun place to go when ur with a bunch of friend hanging out in newport!
I was really excited to try this place out! I had heard it was a lot of fun for Taco Tuesdays, and as a regular at nearby Great Mex's Taco Tuesday, I figured I'd drop in and get a taste of the hype.
First of all, the place was practically empty at 10 on a Tuesday. For Newport, I think 10 PM is a pretty busy hour. Our waitress came to take our orders and was very nice, but kept pushing me to order one of the giant margaritas even after I told her I had already had some beer, and didn't want to drink that much. She would not let up! I finally had to sternly tell her that was too much alcohol for me and I did not want it.
The smaller margarita I did try was very strong and tasted dreadful. We ordered queso and chips, and it was decent.
They have no beers on tap. I find that very odd for a cantina with a full bar. I am in no rush to come back here, and definitely don't recommend it on a Tuesday night.
Very, uh "high use", which means dirty floors, dirty tables, and very dirty bathrooms.
This is at the location of the former Studio Cafe, which was a classier joint, with live music and upscale drinks. Â But here there are plenty of tourists (and you can't blame them, as the location between Newport Harbor and the Balboa Fun Zone, and the Balboa Pier and the Pacific Ocean is perfect), and at night plenty of 21 year olds just looking for cheap drinks so that they can get... wasted.
Better choices for a relaxing waterfront afternoon (including Newport Landing) but having someone clean up more often would be a great start!
I was craving Mexican food and a strong drink. I didn't really want the party scene but eh, that's what it turned out to be so we just rolled with the flow.
Balboa gets packed on a week night and on the weekend it's nearly impossible to find parking. The nightmare of driving around in circles was enough for me to just abandon the car anywhere and just walk in for a drink.
We found parking near this place and got in quick. There are bouncers all over this place. They check ID at the door and you're good to go. If you get too drunk, they throw you out. Awesome.
We barely found a seat and had to ask a party of four to move over onto their table and free up a table for us. So happy they complied. It's always best to ask people when they're drunk.
Service was good for a busy night. They were quick to bring over waters and our huge margarita. We missed happy hour so our drink was $16. Ouch. We split the sunset rolls and chips. Kind of a bummer that chips aren't free. I think every Mexican place should offer free chips but eh, maybe that's just me.
Overall, not a bad place. It's a great location. You can watch the sunset from here and when you're faded, that's an awesome thing to see. I'd come back here for the strong drinks. They pour with the heavy hand. I love that.
Ok, so here's the skinny...AMAZING happy hour 7 days a week. Service though...downhill for a few years now. I'm here right now, 7:30 pm on 4/29 and its dead, however the server has no urgency and we've been waiting 10 mins for a drink. Went to the bar and got 2 Pacificos and a pitcher of sweet tea vodka lemonade in less than 20 seconds! This place is amazing and I'll still come here just with no expectations on service. PS- the summers are sick!!
Review Source:What's not to love about Cabo Cantina? They literally have happy hour for the majority of the day. Plus on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday they have bottomless mimosas and bloody mary's. I've gotten a chicken quesadilla, a cantina burrito, and their nachos. They have all been AMAZING. Aaand they have a pool table. AAAND they have a beer pong table! OH. MY. GOD. Did I forget the bartenders? Cause they're great too. Somehow my first drink is always strong enough to get my tipsy.
Review Source:Taco tuesdays are the shit here!! 5$ all you can eat tacos and if you go for early happy hour its 2 for 1 on drinks talk about a snag, this was my go to spot over the summer for a night of casual drinking with some friends im giving it 3 stars mainly cause of the price of the taco tuesday deal and happy hour, if I were to base it on quality of the food and service itd probably be a 1 star place because they did forget my meal, a simple mistake but no apology was received and I had to keep reminding them (an hour later i got my food)
Review Source:I love all Cabo Cantina's but this one not as much. We went here because we were in Newport. At first when we entered I asked one of the servers if there were space in the back she's all like I dont know you have to go check. What kind of service is that? So we sat and our server came and we got drinks. It was happy hour so she told us that we will get our drinks in the big cup instead of putting it in 2 seprate cups. AT the end she had charged us 17 bucks for each one which was not worth it at all. But the patron shots we got was the bomb. :)
Review Source:It's like spring break cancun in here and if you're expecting anything else, Cabo Cantina is really not the choice for you. Â It's loud, tacky looking, cramped, and full of drunk people. Â It's just that type of bar -- what else do you expect from a place that serves a variety of colorful 32 oz margaritas??
The 32oz drinks are indeed a pricey $20 and I didn't feel it was extremely strong either. Â Â The happy hour 2 for 1 deals don't include the massive margaritas but it's an awesome deal and allows you to get tons of drinks for cheap. Â We were hungry so we decided to order food. Â For a place that may look slightly questionable, my shrimp tacos were pretty good. Â The fajitas also come out steaming on a hot plate and its aroma is just amazing as the waiter walks by especially if you're slightly tipsy. Â Thankfully, we also ordered the fajitas because I think it's one of their better choices and I would have been so jelly smelling everyone else's orders.
Tacky, oversized margaritas kinda place -- it's a cool atmosphere to have an awesome time with friends.
Wish someone would have told us that the 32oz cup of margarita costs $20. We went during Happy Hour and though it says it is not included in the Happy Hour menu, I didnt think it costs $20 each margarita. The margaritas weren't even strong-they were pretty weak.
However---the cheese nachos were amazing! The happy hour did do me good with the 4 shots of taquilla I got. It was a fun night! REALLY AWESOME NIGHT actually!
** my review is ONLY for Taco Tuesdays! that's the only times I have made my way here**
taco Tuesdays consists of $4.95 all you can eat tacos & 2 for 1 drinks! doesn't get much better than this, come Tuesdays! Â The 2 for 1 drinks are from 4-8 and then again 1030-close. Â This place is the best place to get completely wasted, I'm not kidding. Â There's also a light up beer pong table available for people, it's fun to get some competition and bet a couple drinks. Â The service is pretty good, could be a bit better but for the prices they have I don't complain much. Â The tacos are good as well, the beans are delicious. Â It is right by the beach so it's fun to walk along the beach drunk with friends afterwards, definitely a spot that's made some fun stories for me to share!
MY FAVORITE BAR IN NEWPORT BEACH!!
I love everything about this place... the vibe, loud music, pool table, monstrous nachos, and of course, their amazing HAPPY HOUR specials!
Cabo Cantina has the best happy hour. 2 for 1 drinks from 4-8pm, and late nights. Double the drinks, double the fun!! Yup, that means two coronas, two jacks with coke, or two margaritas with a double shot!
When you want to snack on something, get the nachos or quesadilla to share! One tip: if you like carne asada fries or just any type of French fries, you can request  to switch out the nachos for steak fries instead.
Cheers to beach days and a merry time!
This place is a dump!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Â!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Â!!!!!!!!!
I real flea bag!!! There was dust everywhere!!! and its not from being by the ocean either!! There was dust on the vents/ ceiling fan/ any given fixture. I never saw any of the wait staff wash their hands either! What I did see is them scratching their hair and rubbing their noses while they put straws and limes in peoples drinks!!!! I even took pictures because I was in disbelief!!! Its a wonder the health inspector does shut this clip joint down!!!!!!!!!! BTW the wait staff appear to be on something. I don't know if our waitress popped a molly or what but she could get our order straight and brought our the wrong food for us and then asked what we ordered?!?! She wrote it down for a reason right? I will steer clear of this place! I my tummy starts to grumple tonight I will know why!!
Last minute decision to eat here while frantically searching yelp for a good spot for dinner within walking distance of the pier.
It is pretty spacious with a bunch of tv's. To my disappointment, the SAME channel was on each and every one of them. Menu seemed like it was fairly decent and at an affordable price, however nothing really stood out. I guess the only thing was the 2-for-1 on drinks for their happy hour. Â So here are my thoughts..
Food is mediocre. Entrees sorta the same price as the appetizers. Torta sucked do not get it, burrito was pretty good though. Cold beans and cold mexican rice as side dishes. Fries were great. "Steak fries" are just seasoned fries. Reminded me of the frozen food brand of "ore Ida" fries. HA!
Margaritas. It is pure shit, not enough tequila and one is $12. I still wouldn't pay $6 for that shit... Skip it. Get a beer instead.
Service is kinda trash. And the bathrooms are the trashiest most disgusting thing. You'd feel more clean pissing in the ocean, seriously.
Great location and cheap booze. That's about it.
The service is slow and disorganized. Came here for bottomless mimosas on Labor Day weekend, and lo and behold they don't do it on the Labor Day weekends BUT, they still gave us the flyer. The server wasn't even friendly about it when we told her that we had a group of ten coming and we specifically picked this place because of the bottomless mimosas. My boyfriend was pissed considering it was his birthday and it's a USC bar (he is USC alum so felt betrayed haha).
Will not come here again for the bottomless mimosas cause we went over to Woody's and they have MUCH better food with bottomless mimosas.
The happy hour menu here is a killer, literally. The morning after spending time at the Cantina I woke up feeeling like death due to taking advantage of the 2 for 1 drinks. Better believe when I say that this place is a party on the beach. It's such a good time that cell phones stay hidden and your yelp check-in is the last thing on your mind because you'll be too busy double fisting. After all, it is the norm here.
The food is good but it's even better if your slightly inebriated. Always ask for the day's special as it can vary from $5 sliders that come with beans and rice or $5 footlong burritos. Vegetarian? Lets just say the options available come in liquid form.
Service isn't phenomenal but it isn't horrendous either. Use manners and the waitresses will boost their service level and will make sure you always have a drink in hand. The waitress serving us was so great with drinks that by the time I got home I was missing shoes and a wallet. LE SIGH. However, i'm sure I made a bum on the beach very happy and thanks to my drunken carelessness he or she was able to enjoy the Cabo Cantina double fisting experience!
Cool place to hang in Newport. Buy 2 get 1 free drinks~ Awesome~ anything is better when it's F.R.E.E. Awesome music, good crowd, has lots of of people but not overly crowed, so you still get to find a place to sit and hang with friends! Oh, and the music is not overly loud to a point that you have to SHOUT at your friend just to talk!
Will come here to chill again if I get a chance to~
F*ck this place!!! was walking by here and saw the unlimited sliders the bouncer dude or what standing in front was all hyping it up to us and  we said ok lets try it out. walked in the place is hella dirty went to the restroom and omg its worst than the  public restroom at the beach!!
the waitress was a lazy B*tch!!!! Â just sitting around with her friends at the bar ignoring us took 15-20min for a dam slider. after nine sliders she was like "were out of buns so thats it" and just walks away to her friends again.
b*tch did get a tip and it was "get SOME BUNS!!!"
i wouldnt ever drink here better off walking to the liquor store and buy beers its cheaper pitchers here were small as hell probably only fill up 2 mugs.
i would give this place a 0 star if i can..
i rather eat food from a food truck!!!
I came here on Saturday night after my friends and I went on a booze cruise right down Main street in the Harbor. Â We were only here for an hour, but we had a good time. Â My friends took shots of patron for only $4.50. Â That's basically unheard of for patron. Â We also got their chips and guacamole and nachos. Â Their nachos are good! Â They're also really big. Â I suggest you get that for at least 3-4 people unless you have 2 people who are EXTREMELY hungry and have a big appetite. Â My friend got The Mazatlan, which is this giant margarita. Â If you read my reviews, I'm not really a drinker. Â I have a few sips here and there mainly because I just don't enjoy alcohol, but that margarita was REALLY tasty. Â I would recommend that if you like maragaritas/fruity drinks
The overall atmosphere was fun. Â I actually enjoyed the music they played and they had the corresponding music video playing on the screens all around. Â We stayed near the bar and front of the place. Â Everyone there was just really nice and accommodating.
This place is party central - as it was written up at <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.winefoodjava.com&s=6a31e4bacbe883c3ac4657b6ff2c1f3da42959e7193610c487698ac835f8cda0" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.winefoodjava.…</a>  Does anyone really go for the food?
"Monday night in Newport Beach - it was quiet at 10:30 PM. We had just finished a fantastic meal at the Cannery and went into Cabo Cantina for a nightcap. There might have been six people in the place including us. Jimmy Buffet was playing on the music system. Suddenly, eight Canadians walked in and ordered a round of shots, "red headed sluts" to be exact (that's Jagermeister, cranberry juice and peach schnapps). Taken in by the moment, a long, lean and attractive (mid 20's) member of the Canadian party offered to dance on our high top table for four and proceeded to climb aboard - surprisingly agile despite her four inch heels. Her performance was short lived as the bartender scooped her up and carried her out the door. He let her come back when she promised to stay off the tables."
Taco Tuesday and foot long burrito night are pretty interesting too!
This is a bar, not an upscale restaurant. So don't expect the white glove treatment. But as far as bars go, this pace is awesome.
The manager Lenny is always very flexible when we bring in a group. The staff are great. The servers are amazing at handling separate tabs, which is a must for us because we usually come in with 40+ people.
The happy hour is the best in town. The nachos are huge and deliciousness. If you get there early enough, you can catch the sunset. a rocks throw to the ocean. Nice windows that open up for the ocean breeze. And they have a ton of tvs for whatever game is on.
OMG! This place is like hot as shit!!! Screw the ocean breeze, who needs it? I love to dance and flirt from 4-8 and 10:30-12:30 during their mazing happy hour, soak myself in lamp oil, and light my self on fire. I highly recommend this place if your with tons of friends or are a complete loner who's lookin for tons of friends.
So i go here on the reg and am like totally VIP status. My favorite waitress is always doped out on opiates and pounds tequila with me before she goes to pick up her kid. Love u Paula!
FYI: there's a complete neglect for customer service during happy hours.
Advice: if u want to get served, attack ur waitress while she's at the POS system and introduce urself. Quickly share a childhood story and then ask them their name. Then thank them by name, slowly tell them ur order, repeat your order and then point to where ur sitting. Â Be sure to kiss their hand if its real busy.
Oh yeah, and this place has like the best worst mexican food ever. I recommend the boneless buffalo wings and thats it. Ur mouth will be sure to set afire and will require patron silver for dousing. Remember to have them bring orange slices instead of limes though -limes r for fags! Bathroom is a murder scene. Music rocks. Earth girls r easy and the beach is so close u can practically cum on it.
Love. This. Shithole
Cabo Cantina is all the way by Balboa's coast so it's pretty much a "destination" as some may call it. Ruby's DIner is down the pier (as always) so you have a choice between overpriced tacos or overpriced burgers. If it weren't for happy hour at Cantina, the decision would have been difficult.
2 for 1 drinks is the deal, and since each will cost around $7-$10, you'll definitely want to make sure you drink you're money's worth. The downfall is that you will not want to get up afterwards. It's just the beach environment and the laziness drunk attitude that comes with it.
The food is OK - not great. I got the taquitos and the soup. The taquitos were good but the soup was bland and watery. Service was ok. For some reason, they had free chili in this black pot when I happened to be eating here. Lol.
I've had my fair share of Sunday Fundays at Cabo Cantina. It's been a pit stop for buzzed biking many a times. But wow, night outs at Cabo Cantina was pretty darn fun!
So it's further down the peninsula than you like. And it's not in walking distances to any other bars, but Cabo was so fun that it didn't matter if we went anywhere else.
I can't be sure what their specials are, but the Saturday night that I was there, they were doing 2 for 1 drinks. 2 for 1!! Wow, what a steal! I got 2 jack and diets for about $6! I mean, you can't beat that. Really, you can't. They had a DJ spinning some top 40s and danceable music so me and my buddies were getting our boogey on. Sure there's no established dance floor but the crowd just kind of made behind the bar the dance floor and it worked out just fine. The bartenders were fast and drinks were always spot on. Cabo Cantina just made it into a Newps hot spot for me!
I liked how they had a ton of TVs lining all their walls. Definitely looks like a fun place to catch a game. And being steps away from the sand isn't so bad either.
I only give it four stars because food wasn't on happy hour and I HATE paying to park. The service was outstanding, even when I ordered a water to pace myself. Regardless, hit the place for Superbowl Sunday and had a blast. The music was playing at a perfect level, drinks were flowing, staff was super friendly. I didn't regret wasting $6 to the crappy city of NPB for parking because this restaurant was worth it. It's right off the boardwalk so you totally have the beach feel and seeing the sun set was worth the metered parking. My buddy ordered the nachos, and it's arguably the best I've ever had.
I think go there with no expectations besides to get your drink on and have a good time and you'll find it worth while. The place totally reminds me of San Diego and those feelings, so that's a total plus.
Will I be back, in a heartbeat!
