So full disclosure, I have not been to this restaurant in a few years since I moved out of the area. Â But I figured I could still write a review.
I think that what makes this place the best is the staff and the owners. Â Everyone there is incredibly sweet and welcoming.
The food is just great. Â My favorite is the roasted pear salad which is simply delicious. Â I would give the place 5 stars but I think the dessert menu could be updated and improved.
Definitely check this place out though!
I've been going to Cafe Vivace for years now, and I regret not reviewing them sooner.  They're like a hidden gem in Plainfield, NJ.  In the past 6 years that I have been going there they have always been consistent, both as far as service and the food goes.  Their prices are more than reasonable, they have a 3 course pre fixe  menu for $13 at lunch and $22 at dinner (with a glass of wine) and you get the same portion as if you had ordered a la carte.  By the way, the food isn't good for the prices - the food is just really good and happens to be at a great price.
My personal favorites are the ceasar salad with eggplant croutons, fried artichoke app, and I absolutely love the pork chop with mashed sweet potatoes, mushrooms and hot peppers. Â Their ricotta cheesecake is also very good. Â And did I mention that they make their own bread?? It's a rosemary and sea salt foccacia, and this has to be the only restaurant that I make sure I ask for bread when I get take out.
The owner, his father, and his wife are almost always there, remember everyone, and make everyone feel like they are family, like they really want you to be there. Â The crowd seems to be a lot of regulars as they all know each other, and rather than being cliquey, they too make you feel welcomed and at home. Â The entire staff is very friendly and competent. Â In the years that I have been going there, these are characteristics I've seen in every employee of theirs that I have encountered.
I've probably eaten here well over 30 times and I've never been disappointed. Unless you go in with unrealistic expectations (this isn't a substitute for Per Se people...), I can guarantee you won't be disappointed either.
