Woo Hoo this place is awesome.
First of all - for ladies and men who like men - there are some hotties at this place. Meow.
Great beer, great service, great pizza, great vibes, great music. Â I seriously have no complaints. Â It was like one awesome surprise after the other. When I thought I was impressed, I got re-impressed. This may be because I was boozin' that night, or because it was awesome. I vote the latter. I seriously can't wait to go again. Maybe first time's a charm? I'm always a little skeptical to rave after one experience, but since we can edit, I'll keep this up. As of yet - this place gets an A in my gradebook.
I Love this place! I don't live far so delivery takes about 30 min which is AWESOME!!! Very good pizza with fresh ingredients. I ordered a burger that arrived hot and perfectly charred medium and the lettuce and tomato were still crisp and my tots were warm and crispy too. Delivery fellows are always nice. I've also dined in and it's a really chill spot for catching whatever game is playing.
Review Source:We came here for brunch today - surprisingly good! I had a few rounds of delicious bloody marys ($5!), shared 2 buckets of coronas, and ate an amazing chocolate chip french toast for brunch! I typically come here for dinner (fish and chips special, and pizza!) and love it... Look forward to brunching here again soon!
Review Source:Great bartenders, great wait staff, great management/owners.
Pizza isn't really my thing, but even I'd say their super thin crust is good. The garlic fries will give you the MOST offensive breath ever, but it's probably worth it. The beer selection is impressive and I think they even had cider on tap. I'd be all over this place for Hawks games if the lockout would ever end.
The only down side is I live nowhere near Rogers Park!
We have passed by the Candlelite for years and always wondered what it was like inside. We live in Rogers Park and are always looking for those great spots to eat and thank goodness we stopped in to Candlelite! Â We have found one of those special places in Rogers Park! Â We walked in on a Sunday night during a football game and what appeared to be the middle of a birthday party. I mean the place was packed! We spoke to the gentleman at the front desk named Pat. I have to say that they have a gem of an employee there. Pat made us feel like we were family (and it was our first time there). He assured us that he would get us a table asap so we had a couple beers at the bar while we waited, not long, and I am so glad we did. Â We had the meat lovers pizza (large) and it was so good we ate the whole thing between the two of us, and stayed for a couple more beers. Â The venue is warm and friendly and you can tell that they have a regular clientele and I can see why with the staff they have. Â Such a great surprise. Again, thanks to Pat for convincing us to stick around for a couple minutes for the table and for taking such good care of us. Â We will for sure go back.
Review Source:Great spot! Â Classic pizzeria, very good thin-crust. Â The night we went on had great drink specials too. Â Friday features Irish beers and whiskey, and not just your run of the mill Jameson and Guinness... Harp on tap, and Powers and Tullamore Dew to go with it. Â Not the most common stuff to see, especially in a pizzeria. Â A large pizza was the perfect size for 2, with a couple of beers and wines to wash it down. Â Very friendly staff, lively atmosphere... good spot to take the family or a hot date. Â Pleasantly surprised, and will definitely go back!
Review Source:Only a couple blocks away from bf's casa ..we happened to find this chill sports bar/restaurant. Been here twice so far and here's my two cents:
Highlights:
* adequate amount of draft beers and liquors (Delirium Tremens, La Fin de Mondu)
* thin crust pizza
  ~BBQ chicken pizza
a little bit on the sweet side, but I enjoyed couple slices of it
~ made our own- italian beef, sausage, green peppers, mushrooms
* wings
~half and half of spicy buffalo & caesar chipotle
~ it's always a fun time trying out wings at different restaurants. The spicy buffalo here.. not that spicy. Perfectly coated with sauce.
The caesar CHIPOTLE! Creamy, mayo-like, sweet and deep, hearty flavor. My fav sauce! Never tasted anything like it!!
* Service is great. Red-headed girl (don't know her name) is friendly and super sweet.
We had 2 other guys at our 2nd visit that were fantastic as well!
Local joint. Good service. Satisfies my bf's pizza craving =]
Will check out some of their daily specials on our next visit.
This was a really nice find. Â We were looking for another bar to get a great hamburger and I stumbled upon this place. Â It's a Bears/Blackhawks bar, which made it funny that we came in wearing our Chiefs shirts. Â Everyone really had fun giving us a hard time, but it was all in good fun. Â They have enough large screen TVs to watch a Bears game on. Â The hamburgers were good enough that we will be back. Â The pour on my Oberon was a little strange. Â Came out very cloudy, but I'm guessing it was the end of the keg. Â We will be going back in the future and will try the pizza.
Review Source:Never again.
Had heard good things about this place for years.
When I took the pizza box from the delivery guy, I was amazed with how lightweight my large pizza was. Sure, I figured, this is probably attributable to their famous cracker-thin crust. Still, there was little sauce, Â little cheese, Â little sausage. And the large is the smallest large you're likely to find anywhere.
What ingredients there were had no discernible flavor other than "grease" and "salt."
Arrived cold and dried out.
If this is what they've been serving up for 67 years, I can't understand how they've lasted so long.
$23 including $3 tip and $3 delivery charge. I can spend far less on frozen pizza, and some frozen pizzas are definitely of higher quality.
There was one mitigating factor: the guy on the phone really couldn't have been more pleasant, both when I placed the order and then when I called to complain about it. It's a shame his people skills are being wasted on such a shoddy product.
EDIT: The "nice guy" called me at 8:30 a.m. the next morning to double-check how I liked my order. What I don't like is being called at 8:30 a.m. by somebody I ordered a pizza from the night before.
I agreed with other reviewers. Â Rogers Park is not my neighborhood, but if it was this would be my hangout. Â It gives the appearance of being a bar from the estimated dating of the outdoor signage and neon beer lights but this is a down-home comfy casual dining restaurant. Â I didn't have a beer since it was lunch but they have a selection of many beers on tap. Â My family had the thin crust pizza and this 5 star rating is provided via my teenage son who said it was some of the best thin crust he's ever had.
Plenty of TVs to keep the kids occupied.
I'd driven by many-a-time and totally fallen in love with their old-school sign. I finally got the chance to go when my wife's (then fiancee's) best friend planned our big-fat-gay bachelorette party there.
They took AMAZING care of us and even treated us to a congratulatory shot. I wish I remembered our waitress's name, she was super friendly. Since then, we've been back and also ordered delivery from them. The four-cheese pizza is super good, and their appetizers are also tasty. Good beer selection and service that can't be beat. I'm so happy that we're in walking distance from them. It's a wonderful way to spend a Friday night: walk over to Candlelite for some pizza and beer and walk on home feeling super happy about life.
The cracker thin and crispy crust here is perfect! Â We ordered an Italian Meat lovers pizza that hit home- I loved everything about it. Â We also had a house salad and some wings. Â For the wings they were able to do to different flavors, which is a rarity and appeased my desire for teriyaki instead of the usual buffalo. Â The place looks pretty modern- a loft feel with exposed brick. Â They also have a nice beer list... it was overall a solid experience minus their lack of staff. Â We were there on a Sunday for a late lunch, and our waiter was great, but there was only one of him, running the entire front of the house (waiter, bartender, host and busser). Â Poor guy looked about ready to collapse.
One other tip- the crispy crust doesn't reheat so crispy, so you should eat the entire pizza in one sitting!
Love it. Seems like a great neighborhood hangout. Fair prices on beer, good pizza, great garlic fries.
Our waitress was a little ditzy and didn't bring us new glasses when we switched beers and didn't bring the right silverware and napkin quantities, so they could do better with service during busy times. The guy who seemed like an owner/manager was really nice though.
Check-In on Foursquare/Facebook and get a free order of garlic fries.... SOLD!
I've been to Candlelite a handful of times now and I can honestly say that I have not eaten anything other than the pizza (and the free garlic fries)... and it's delicious.
We stopped in this past Sunday for lunch and found the place completely empty, which we just attributed to the fact that it was a really nice day out and there was lots of stuff going on in the city (pride parade, etc). No worries though, the last 2 times we've been there it's been pretty crowded. The pizza was delicious as always and even though the service was a little slow, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt considering she was the only person there serving 3 dudes at the bar, our table of 2 and another larger table of 7-8. It's not like the food came out cold or anything, there were just a few times when we wanted to pay the check, but she seemed to get distracted. But like I said, I don't blame her, she was doing the best she could given the circumstances.
My only other complaint with Candlelite is the seats in the booths. Every single one of them seemed to have duct tape covering up what I can only imagine are giant holes in the seats. These holes also make it so that you sink into the seats completely which got a little uncomfortable after a while. I was also a little upset that the outside area in front that we've eaten at before wasn't open, but it was Sunday afternoon afterall so maybe it just hadn't gotten setup yet.
Overall I really like this place, the pizza is good, tons of TVs, atmosphere is good and even though it's street parking it's not the worst. So if you live in the area and are looking for a good thin crust pizza I would definitely check out Candlelite.
Oh Candlelite, I owe you a review. Â I meant to do it after my last visit, for the NU-Illinois Wrigley Field game, but that debacle stung me so badly that I couldn't bear to think of it for days afterwards, and then I forgot to review. Â But you were so good to us that day...
Candlelite is great for lots of occasions. Â I have eaten there a few times and drunk there many more. Â There are three main things to recommend it, from my perspective.
1. Â It's an unofficial Northwestern bar. Â You can watch football there every Saturday in the fall, with a modest but appreciative NU crowd. Â Go ahead--camp out for the entire afternoon.
2. Â The food is pretty darn good "for a bar." Â They are known for their thin-crust pizzas, which are very good, but I can also vouch for the New Mexico salad, the hummus plate, the calamari, and the onion rings. Â The menu has lots of options for different appetites and food preferences.
3. Â The service is phenomenal. Â Both of the regular bartenders are gems of the first degree. Â They work hard (often serving the entire place solo) and make everyone feel welcome and special. Â I cannot emphasize this enough--these guys are the best.
Also, the beer selection is solid, and you will always find a parking space within a stone's throw or closer.
It's off the beaten path for most, but much beloved of Rogers Parkers. Â And NU fans. Â When does football season start?
We stopped for a quick Sunday lunch. This place has been here forever, which of course I love. I also like that they play good music and a volume that does not interfere with conversation.
We tried the onion rings. They look great and have a good flavor, but I would have preferred them a bit crispier. Next time I will send them back for another blast in the fryer.
Chris had the South of the Border burger with tater tots. It was good, but nothing special. I had a personal thin crust Italian Beef pizza with beef and jardiniere on it. I really liked the crispiness of the crust, but although it was nice and spicy, there was not a lot of flavor to it. That part was a bit disappointing.
The service was very good and the atmosphere was friendly. I am sure we will be back again sometime, especially because it is not far from home.
This is the kind of place where if I lived in the neighborhood this would be my neighborhood place. It's a little bit sports bar, a little bit family restaurant, a little bit neighborhood hangout. They probably have their own bowling league and softball team, and if they don't, you can bet they did in the 60s.
Pizza pizza pizza is what they push, of the thin crust variety, cut in squares. What was Chicago style pizza before the 70s. It's appropriately greasy and salty, if you know what I mean. If not, you've been ruined by Wolfgang Puck. They also have a variety of sandwiches, salads, and bar food. I had the fish and chips, which was a small order (only two pieces of fish), but it was their $5 Friday special (half price), which might have had something to do with it. Also on Friday: $4 gets you a pint of Guinness, Harp, or Smithwicks, or a shot of Jameson, Powers, or Tullamore Dew. How can you lose?
Service was great. On my first visit, they made me feel like I'd been coming in for 20 years. The only drawback is that it's a bit off the beaten path, unless you live in west Rogers Park. Fortunately, I have a friend who does, so you can expect to see me at the Candlelite more often.
I've driven by Candlelite hundreds of times and I always though it was just a local bar. Then a coworker told me that they had amazing burgers. Since then, I've wanted to try them for myself.
It took a while but I finally made my way over to Candlelite with a buddy of mine for the BOGO burger deal on Wednesdays. Amazing deal, average burger. I ordered the smokehouse. It's got bbq sauce, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onions. It was hardly smokey and definitely not a house. I have pretty high standards when it comes to burgers ever since I visited a certain heavy metal bar. Candlelite just didn't seem to ignite the fire; it barely lived up to its name.
I'll probably visit again because it's close to home and they've got daily deals [see photos].
It was a lazy Sunday afternoon - and we wanted to have pizza in the hood. Â Yelp to the rescue - and there we were sitting in Candlelite.
Briefly shift through a bunch of Yelp's reviews, I was drooling over the garlic fries. Â Must. Have. It. Â Also a thin crust pizza to share.
We got there around 5:30 p.m., greeted by the server, asked to sit anywhere we like.  The  menu came 5 minutes later.  We ordered.  Garlic fries and a medium pizza.  Garlic fries came - it was ... meh.  I like the fact that it has a surprising factor (looked like it was drenched/tossed in some sort of vinegary mix?) - but other than that, I certainly have had better garlic fries.  Even from a booth in a summer festival. Â
Move on to the pizza. Â I may have an OCD - but I like my pizza to be covered with toppings - at least somewhat evenly. Â That was not the case. Â Part of it looked like it was just cheese pizza (and we certainly did not order just cheese). Â The pizza was a bit too soggy for my taste. Â
Service was ... annoying, more than anything else. Â The waitress was polite enuf for us to file a legitimate complaint - yet, she definitely was not a good server at all. Â Menu did not come until 5 minutes we were seated (and she was the one who greeted us!). Â Parmesan cheese and chilli flakes were not offered. Â And I could point out a couple more flaws - but I don't feel like it.
Anyway. Â This is more like a 2.5 stars for me. Â I gave them an extra 1/2 for a good coke (the drink).
I noticed there were lots of regulars sitting on the bar making friendly chit chat with the servers and bartender. Â Maybe we need to be a regular to get a better service?
P.S. for you garlic fries lover - try Ketch Joanne in Half Moon Bay, CA. Â The best I have ever had thus far.
We've never been in here, but we live in South Evanston and order delivery fairly frequently.
The garlic herb fries are AMAZING. Seriously. If you're not a fan of garlic then you (obviously) wouldn't be into these, but they're packed with flavor, and as a girl who grew up in Yorkshire, I dig the fact that they're made with vinegar. Even delivered, these things rock. I'm afraid to go in and order them lest I end up weighing 500 pounds.
My favorite is the New Mexico salad. Just the right amount of everything- lots of avocado, tortilla strips, black beans. Delicious! The boyfriend is a big fan of their burgers.
Everything always arrives here piping hot and not mushy. The prices aren't awful, and delivery is generally pretty fast.
Definitely a favorite for tasty American fare, especially when you don't feel like cooking on a Friday night.
Any place with a TV in the bathroom is an automatic 4-star place.
Went here last night for the first time...Candlelite is much more bar-like than restaurant. Lots of TV's. Â Love the old-school sign outside. Heard the pizza was great, and it was indeed very good. We had veggie, sausage, and margherita. If I lived in the area this might be a regular haunt of mine. And not just so I can watch TV in the bathroom.
Candlelite, how do I love thee? Â Let me count the ways
1. Â Rogue Dead Guy and Bells Two Hearted Ales on Tap
2. Â "Bring in the heat" Pizza
3. Â Free samples of old no.38 stout
4. Â Megatouch XL (erotic photohunt anyone?)
5. Â Shuffleboard
6. Â Clean single person bathrooms complete with TV's
7. Â TV's abound, all tuned to sports.
8. Â Families, as in Mom, Dad, and 4 kids under the age of 16 taking in a meal at the next table over from us.
They only had one waitress on staff last night, and the bartender could have been more attentive. Â
Sure, it's hard to get to, and is only served by the 49B bus, but Candlelite wouldn't be Candlelite if it were anywhere else in the city.
**DISCLAIMER: This was delivery only**
Ever heard of an order gone bad? I'm writing this an hour after eating it, because it was that bad. Horror story not so much, but bogus place/never getting again? Definitely.
I got this because Jean C had much to proffer about the Garlic Fries. My girlfriend and I *LOVE* garlic so hey, not a bad idea right?
So we get Garlic Fries and a White Pizza. My thoughts were that it was kinda new-york ish. So where to begin?
Well, the phone guy was rude as hell, all "I've been here a long time hurry up", and apparently we get a $3 delivery? I've heard of places with $2, that's normal, but I don't get what the extra buck is for. Anyway, delivery done. The one plus is that they found our apartment complex and the right door properly, and quickly.
My girlfriend noted that the Pizza wasn't hot, and that maybe this place is decent for a stoner.
Anyway, take a look at the pics. Where the hell is the feta, and what happened to caramelized onions? We like onions just like we like garlic, but you know, it helps to get what you order. If you order a peanut butter sandwich you don't expect raw peanuts with butter.
Lastly, to pay $29 for a "large" Â (like 12 or 14") that is probably the size of a small at places like Traitoria Demi, I will pass on ever considering these guys again. Maybe they're better as a bar? I don't plan to find out.
Ate here with the roomies as they are always looking for good deals... Also, one of them, Derrick T, is a foodie and really likes it here so I trusted him to go on the massive hike up north passed my parent's place and old 'hood on to Candlelite.
Went on 2 for 1 pizza night and the pizza was pretty good. It was thin crust.. crackly and crispy which is fine to me, but not totally my taste unlike my roomie who loves it..
Also had the garlic fries which are good, but I don't think are as memorable as some make it. They are good though..
I think the best part of this whole experience was the price. It was like 31 dollars with tip to be stuffed and have leftovers between 4 people. This place is more a bar than anything else so I wouldn't of thought about eating here (I've seen this place so many times going to Evanston and never gave it a second glance.)
With everything though, I'd definitely come back again with the roomies to try another cheapie night. 3 stars.. A-OK in every way...
I had to eat the garlic fries as a means of self defense, since my husband chose to order them. Â There's nothing worse than sitting next to your loved one, smelling his garlicy breath (and the burps!) and not being able to spew your own garlic fire back at him. Â Two negatives make a positive, right?!
Though I have to admit, the garlic fries were pretty darn good; as was the sausage and pepper pizza. Â Top it off with a couple of Blue Moons and I was in heaven. Â Why did it take us four years to find this place?
The next day, I'm still burping garlic, but the husband is not. Â I think I won the battle.
I can't believe I haven't written a review of Candelite yet. After moving to Evanston we drove past all the time and were intrigued by the catchy sayings on the sign outside, so after getting rave reviews from a few neighbors we started going.
There isn't anything fancy or especially spectacular about Candelite, yet it is quickly becoming one of my favorite places. It's close to home which is great, there's always parking available, and after 6:00 (I think) you can use the Midas lot across Western. The inside is sized perfectly; not too big so that you feel like you're walking into a warehouse, and not so small that you are sitting on top of the people around you. Note: the 3 highly sought after booths on the north side of the restaurant are great for coziness and people-watching.
I think the best thing about Candelite is the daily special; 2 for 1 pizza, 2 for 1 burgers, $10 pitchers (bartenders choice), .10 wings, and the wings are GOOOOD! My favorite is the teriyaki, but the buffalo (spicy, please) takes a close second. $6 bloody mary's on Sunday, football, comfortable surrounding's..yeah, it's all of that and a hot wing.
Three words: Â Roast Beef Pizza
Sounds disgusting, but is actually one of the greatest things in the world. Â Only to be perfectly matched with the garlic fries. Â I'm so glad I don't live anywhere near this place, because I'd gain about thirty pounds, and all the delivery guys would know my name.
When I tell people about how much I like Chicago style pizza, they all nod and say something about Uno. Â No. Â No! Â Chicago style thin crust. Â So thin it's crispy. Â That's what I want. Â It's often my first meal off the plane when I arrive in town. Â I suggest you make it yours as well.
I tried Candlelite last night on the suggestion of a friend. Â The place is a nicely laid out establishment with plenty of bar space and seating indoors. Â Outside, the patio in the front has a few tables on each side.
Tuesday is the day I'd recommend you go because they have 2 for 1 pizza's. Â Yes, you buy one and get another one free....that is a deal in this town. Â A medium pizza is big, so unless you are hungry, that will probably be enough.
Beers are priced around $4 to $5 per pint. Â Not bad, but not great either. Â In addition, they have on their menu daily 2 beer specials, but the waitress told us to ignore them as they didn't apply. Â In other words, Fat Tire Amber ale was suppose to be on sale, but only Bud Light was.....now that is just doesn't make sense. Â
The pizza was very good....I ate the pepperoni and jalapeno pepper pizza and it had a nice kick to it. Â
I saw a ton of police officers eating here...no less than 3 cars over the hour + I was eating. Â Is that a good sign? Â Perhaps, but I'll let you be the judge of such an aspect.
Service was good as well as the food. Â Other than the beer pricing issues, I'd highly recommend this place.
I am a pseudo regular at the Candlelite. Â Over the past two years they've gone from being a bar that happened to serve decent food to a decent pub. Â Now they're pushing into the snooty with their menu. Â This has both positives and negatives.
On the positive: the food almost always delivers on the promise. Â The burgers are well prepared and the garlic fries are the bomb. Â If I were a San Fran transplant, this would be a spot to try.
On the negative: are you kidding me? Â Tempura mushrooms? Â Why not just call them what they are, fried mushrooms. Â You aren't fooling anyone. Â I also don't appreciate that beer prices have been steadily rising over time.
If things keep up the Candlelite will lose a star. Â That will happen when the cops stop going their for food (they always know the good spots) or when you can buy wine by the bottle with your dinner. Â
Stay close to your roots!
Excellent neighborhood bar and grill! Â I love this place. Â They have great specials all the time. Â Dollar burgers on Sundays, two-for-one pizzas on Tuesdays, etc. Â
It has a great neighborhood vibe and the wait staff is really nice. Â Despite the service being a little slow, the atmosphere allows you to sit back, have a conversation and hang out.
If anything will keep me in the neighborhood, it'll be the Candlelite.
They've  rehabbed the place in the last few years and it's really more of a sports bar/restuarant now.
But, the za is still fantastic; crispy, crackly thin crust and 2-for-1 eat in Tuesdays. Â I recommend the feta and spinach - or the sausage and mushroom. Â Too good.
In addition to the most garlic-y phenomenal fries this side of this side, try the chocolate chip cookie & ice cream skillet for dessert. Â
A-m-a-z-i-n-g.
The old marque (not neon) on the outside of the building is reminiscent of a movie theater. Â Take someone you like/love there after calling in advance (a few days) and they'll put a Happy B-day or Will you marry me _______? up for ya. Â Preeeeeetty neat.
5 stars for pizza quality, nothing else like it around town.
What a great joint in the middle of...well OK it's not really near anything of interest. Â Kind of a "special trip" place unless you live in Rogers Park or Edgewater. Â But I was very impressed with the interior, the service & the food. Â Oh yeah and that sign out front is MINE if this place ever gets rid of it (I got first dibs, punks). Â It is that cool. Â
Inside it is wood paneled ala Lincon Park sports bars, with many many flat screens for your sport viewing pleasure. Â The people watching is GREAT - I have never seen a more diverse selection of people since my last trip on the 22 Clark bus.
The pizza is really everything everyone raves about - the crust is thin but not cracker-y, the toppings are uber-fresh and plentiful, everything arrives piping hot. Â They also had some pretty tasty chicken fingers which we had to order after the kid at the next table had a meltdown because he only managed to snag two for himself before they were all gone. Â I recommend the Fat Tire Ale with the pizza, that is some fine brewski. Â Complements this high-end bar food very nicely.
A good place to hang after work to chill. Â Seems like it gets packed the later it gets on the weekends so be prepared.
Not sure whether to call this a restaurant or a pub. Â It's got a kind of brew-pub atmosphere, but there's a substantial bar and lots of restaurant seating. Â Good beers on tap, low-key atmosphere.
We would have come in just because of the cool retro signage, but we've come to like the place ... mostly for the garlic fries.
We finally made it here last night and the place exceeded expectations (though we only tried the pizzas and garlic fries.)
Jennifer P. is right about the Fries - literally DRENCHED in Garlic (and oil) but positively addictive - so just resign yourself to the garlic breath (strong enough to permeate even your dreams) and remember that garlic is extremely good for your health (I have it on good authority that the Army actually stockpiles it for medicinal use!) Anyway enjoy every  lusty, finger lickin' bite.
The pizza - whoever said the crust is neither  thin nor crispy must have been there on an off night - it was both and it was fabulous - may be in part because it was a little short on sauce. No matter, other toppings made up for it.
The Tuesday deal is 1/2 price pizza, NOT two-for-the price-of-one - which is good news if there are only two of you and you've already wolfed down the Garlic Fries (AND an order of the fries at "Wiener and Still... because Katsuyuki said they were the best and you happened to walk by on your way to the dry cleaner a few hours earlier...)
Still, purely for research purposes - we did order two (medium-sized) pizzas:  the highly and widely acclaimed  Italian Beef version (very tasty!) and since we were feeling a little "shy" about the Popeye Spinach Pesto version that is also strongly recommended (though waittress reassured they are currently using frozen spinach) instead we played it safe with the classic Margharita Pizza and I was immediately taken aback at how shockingly good the fresh tomatoes were. "Where did you get these tomatoes?" I wanted to demand to know. (FYI we ended up taking just about exactly  one whole pizza home.)
Our waitress was delightful - though service was a tad slow. Atmosphere was much nicer and cleaner than we expected. There were 6 BIG TVs located just in less-bar-ish half of the restaurant - all tuned to the Cubs game (we were just curious - if the Sox hadn't  flunked out beyond even miraculous redemption - would they have been showing the abysmal Sox game - just because - well this is Chicago...?)
All in all a good experience and we will go back and try other menu items and maybe shoot some pool. Â Also, maybe we just got lucky but there wasn't a whiff of cigarette smoke in the place - or maybe it was just the garlic masking all else.
P.S. The window booths are great for uniformed and plain-clothed police watching!
UPDATE: 10/6/06
We went back again last night (Jennifer P. Â was right about those unforgettable Garlic Fries....This time we split a quite good cheeseburger and an excellent Greek Salad.
Waitress thoughtfully put each burger half on separate large plates. Only flaw was that we said "yes" when asked if we wanted anchovies on the salad - they generously topped the salad with SIX way past prime, fishy fish on top. Â Not good.
