If you come here during the day time it's unassuming at first. Then you see the huge coolers filled with hundreds of different beers from across the county in bottles and 50+ beers on tap of both local and national macro and craft. Well shoot this is a close to a tap house/bottle house as I've ever seen outside of my hometown.

With this many beers to choose from it's hard to distinguish, but still they take care of you with categorized, described and  filtered menu's with all the info you'll ever need. The staff really knows their stuff when it comes to the beer.

The ice bar in the middle of the bar upstairs is where you place the beer to keep it cool as their small beers are 12, their large beers are 20 imperial pints. They have a stage with live music throughout the week and a downstairs bar and outdoor patio. This place is way more than meets the eye. Prices are average to pricey, but can be pretty inexpensive with their weekly specials and easing back because I can imagine how hard it is to get national favorites. They are open late which is nice when on Sundays and Mondays the rest of the city is sleeping, they aren't actively trying to kick you out.

Fried cheese curds make mozzarella sticks seem like fish sticks. Not only do they add fried sliced garlic, but the aioli sauce has a sriracha-esqueness about it. Deviled eggs topped with spiced Chesapeake crab was excellent. Pretzel is huge and should be shared and they do not skimp on the salt. The mustard is sweet with very little bite. Garlic herb mussels were good, but to me had very little garlic flavor, 1 pound for $10 and 2 for $19. I'm not a fan of the cream sauce on mussels due to the clean meatiness of steamed mussels and even though the cream may have bacon you should stay classic on this. Spinach dip was ok.

Downstairs bar has slightly different kegs, which when not busy they don't mind getting, but when it's slammed it becomes a nuisance. Darts, but no pool downstairs. Outdoor patio is actually pretty big with direct access to bathrooms without the need to go upstairs. Usually slightly understaffed unless it's the weekend. With many great bars in the area I kept finding myself returning here for the variety, patio and a surprisingly good menu for somewhere I might not consider a gastro pub. Gastro concert house may be more appropriate.

Protip: You will get lost and drunk trying to try them all. Stick to your usual category and go by their suggestions as their staff should be considered Subject Matter Experts on the stuff you don't know about. I made the mistake of trying most all their VA beers to support local not remembering that no breweries have all excellent beers, all make a few mediocre' s and many make more average than good beers.

Let's start w/the good:  Mad selection of brews in bottles and on tap.  If they don't have it, then you don't want it.  Barkeeps, in my experience, are very knowledgable as is the wait staff when comes to the beer selection.  If you love beer, then this place is for you.

The food has been decent in my past visits, and today was no exception.  I ordered the black bean burger with sweet potato fries.  The BB burger was filling, a bit on the spicy side, and generally pretty tasty.  The optional sweet potato fries were great.  Not too greasy, and served in a decent portion.  Wife ordered the Peppadew Chicken sandwich w/regular fries, and commented on the somewhat spicy nature of the sauce.  She was pleased.

The service:  The waitress was pleasant enough.  She did disappear for a time, but the place was busy, and I'm sure she had other tables far afield from ours.  No complaints here.  Service was adequate.

The wait for food, however, was 45 minutes on the nose.  We walked in and were seated immediately at 12 noon on Tuesday (today) for lunch.  We placed orders quickly, but after being assured at the 30 minute mark that lunch was on the way, had to wait another 15 minutes.

I believe it was a manager who delivered the food, and immediately apologized for the wait.  She comped the entire meal.  Big kudos for that gesture.  The place was busy, and she didn't have to do that.  It was a class move.  We didn't have to ask for it.  She just did it.  That's why I'll go back, and well, the beer, of course.

The food was excellent and the service was below average. We were grateful to not have to wait (they were very slow for a Fri night), but after placing our order, the service really slacked off. The food made up for it, and I would be willing to go again.

Out of the four of us that went, two ordered beers (our server made excellent recommendations), two ordered burgers, one ordered the bean burger and one ordered the prime rib sandwich. Everyone was extremely happy with their food.

Service was again sub-par as we waited a long time to receive our check and for our payment to be processed.

Dollar burger night! Delicious and plentiful beers on tap! Chocolate cake with raspberry syrup! Oh, and the Bavarian pretzel I so covet.

Most locations (there are only a few, and they are only in Virginia) have darts and areas to convene and play games.  This location has a courtyard around back and also a pool table and separate bar in the basement. Many nights have been spent here with good friends and good drinks.

Cap Ale is a must-go for sure.

There didn't seem to be much open in that part of Richmond open after business hours for a casual meal, so I stopped in the Ale House on a Monday night.  They had cheap burger night which seemed to have a good following.  They also had a crazy amount of beers, both on tap and in bottles to the point where it almost became paralyzing in terms of picking one.  That said, the beer was good.  The food was ok.  I had their chili which was pretty tasty, but the lamb burger wasn't anything special.  I would come back again though if I was in the area and try to find something else on the menu to try.

BTW, the ice path running down the center of the bar to keep the beers cold was a nice touch.

Their beer selection is excellent......my only argument is that some beers need warning from the server before purchase. For instance....when ordering something under the fruit beer area, one wouldn't expect to have their face burnt off by something spicy....ghost chilis are no man's friend. Having said that, they were obliging to take the beer off the tab and replace it with a better recommendation. Beer selection- 5 stars. Food- 3. They have good stuff, don't get me wrong. Nothing really was overly impressive. I would go back again with a group, but I wouldn't seek them out.

Come in on a Monday evening after 4 to enjoy $2 burgers with any of the incredible draft beers. Great service and food. Ask for Andrew C. He was a great server and should be tipped well.

I really REALLY wanted to give this place a higher rating, but after my few experiences, I really can't.

Yes, they have a really great beer selection, which is awesome for those of us who know and love beer. You would think a place like this would employ others who have some knowledge of beer, but I have discovered that the employees are clueless, and are really there to seel a "look".

The service is SOOOO SLOW. I went there during my lunch break and simply ordered a burger, it took over 30 min to get my burger, and the place wasn't busy. This was after I decided to seat myself at the bar after standing for 5+ min waiting for a hostess to notice me and seat me. THEN, it took FOREVER to the bartender to acknowledge me (and there was only 2 other people seated at the bar). The burger was very good, the service was terrible.

I went there with a large group of people, and the waiter was less than enthusiastic. It took so long to get appetizers, I forgot we even ordered them. I ordered the mac n cheese with crab. I honestly, never found anything that looked like crab, even though I could SMELL the seafood. I guess it was finely minced? Not at all what I wanted or expected. The dish LOOKED good but honestly, had NO flavor what so ever. That was a bummer.

Finally, at the end, 3 of us ordered a growler. It took 30 min to get 3 growlers, and they aren't even filled correctly. Then, I noticed the waiter had added automatic gratuity to my growler. I had to say something to the manager, who corrected it.

Basically, if you are in the mood to hang out for a good amount of time, drink some beer and munch of mediocre food, this place is probably for you.

Never again, I've been here a number of times, Oktoberfest, dollar burgers, and to hear some local music but I will not give them my business anymore.  Why?  Because of our terrible server, Shannon (w/ reddish hair).  She needs to be retrained.  Seriously I've had better service at Arby's.
On this occasion we came to see Session Rockers play, we left after the opening act and never caught the Session set.
After 5 mins of sitting down and not seeing a server, I kindly went to the host and asked if there was a server on our side or if we should go to the bar.  He informed me there were 3 servers on my side, so I went back to our table and waited.  And waited.  And waited for over 5 more minutes.  She finally saw us, how she missed us I don't know as we were only 1 of 5 seated tables. She greeted us w/out menus and silverware and asked if we would like anything to drink.  As we do not know Cap Ale's extensive selection off the top of our heads, we asked for some menus. We finally got our menus and put in our order.  First round of beers and shots came out, no problems.  Then someone, an expediter I assume, delivers some food, and that was it. Shannon never came back out to check on us.  If she had, she would have found out that someone didn't receive their order (we just assumed it was coming), we could use some drinks, and ketchup to go along with the fries would have been nice.
Eventually Shannon came back out to the floor, but not to check on us, to talk to a friend.  We had to flag her down, yes we were THOSE folks, you know the kind that waved their arms around at their server.
When she came, we asked if our buddy was going to get his meal.  She looked perplexed and then stated I think I forgot to place your order.  Let me go check.  Came back and affirmed that she had forgot and she just put it in. Yeah we all make mistakes, human is human, but at least attempt to rectify the matter.  No attempt was made.
We asked for our check, paid our tab and carried our a$$e$ over to Havana.
Yes Cap Ale has a huge beer list, but there are many restaurants out there that have a great beer selection AND gives great service to go along with some delicious food.

I've been here SO many times and I absolutely love this place!

They have a wonderful beer selection and I couldn't be happier. They let you taste beers if you ask and they're all pretty knowledgeable. I love that this place has an ice bar of sorts on the main bar. It keeps my drink nice and cold. The downstairs has a pool table, darts, and some other game that I don't know the name of but is super fun to play. They also have a little patio out back so when it's nice outside, you can sit out there.

The food here is pretty good too! I've had the $2 burger, turkey burger, mushroom burger, pretzel, and countless other apps that are all equally good. The burgers are nice and juicy; they tend to overcook them sometimes, but I think most places do that. The mushroom burger is SO tasty in my opinion! They have this pesto sauce that they put on it and it adds the perfect flavor! And the pretzel... oh the pretzel. There are few places in the States where i can get a large, soft, salty pretzel and although it doesn't taste *exactly* like the ones you can get in Germany, it is definitely an amazing substitute.

I would absolutely recommend this place to people. For beer and food lovers, this is definitely a place to check out.

I may have been here a million times, the majority of them on Monday nights for the "dollar" burger special. "Dollar" burger night doesn't exist anymore, because the prices have gone up to at least 2 dollars/burger. You also have to buy a drink to get the deal. At one point in time, the quality of the burgers dropped and people stopped frequenting this place (the quality of the bean burger, that a vegetarian whom I know fought to have added to the menu, also suffered), but as of writing this, I tried both the cheeseburger and bean burger again and have to say I am satisfied. The quality has come back up. If you come for burger night, here's a tip: you will end up spending at least 8 bucks for burger + drink + tip. If you can down 2 burgers, you'll get more for your money.

The plate of fries is huge but expensive. Ask for a side instead, enough to get the delicious taste but without being robbed. They carry a variety of gourmet mayonnaises to dip your fries in, make sure to ask your waiter to try a sampler.

I've been here on non-Mondays too. The other menu items are OK but nothing special. I wouldn't return on a non-Monday. The desserts are expensive, but big enough to share amongst 3 people. I recommend the brownie a-la-mode and the apple pie.

I don't drink, but my friends who do rave about the wide selection of drinks here that are on tap.

Lastly: there can be a bit of a wait if you come during peak hours on Monday night (6-10) but if you're a Nighthawk yelper, just know that the dollar burger deal goes until 1am for your late night beefy cravings.

I can't believe I'd never been here before, having lived down the street for three years. I guess there are too many other (non-chain) options in the area for me to have ever bothered before. My boyfriend and I stopped in on a complete whim for a Saturday lunch on a holiday weekend, looking like complete crap in our workout clothes.

We walked in right after they opened and were seated in a roomy, comfortable booth near the front, and before long the place was buzzing with revelers. Our server was a young college-aged guy, and he was upbeat if not a bit too informal when interacting with us.

They've got a wide selection of sandwiches and burgers for lunch, as well and entrees, salads, and daily specials. I opted right away for the fried catfish po-boy with french fries, and he got the jalepeno burger.

We started with the fried green tomatoes. If you want more tomato than breading, order them. My boyfriend is from the deep south, and he thought they were well-prepared. They were drizzled in some kind of herb aioli and topped with goat cheese.

We both loved our sandwiches! Mine was a great value and involved a huge fried catfish filet on a baguette with lettuce, tomato, and aioli. Yum! I could barely finish it. The fries were good, but (I think) they were cooked from frozen and not house-cut. I don't mind this at all, but I know some french fry freaks who would. My date polished off his burger in no time, and it was cooked to the correct temp (medium).

The only negative aspect was that one of our utensils already set on the table was caked in food gunk. When we brought it to the attention of the staff, they were absolutely mortified; I could tell that such oversights are rare for them. We weren't angry at all -- just wanted a new fork! -- but we appreciated that they cared and wanted to make sure we were happy.

Our bill with two sodas, an app, and two sandwiches, came to about $35 before tip.

Everything came out hot, tasted great, and our server was attentive. I didn't expect to enjoy my meal as much as I did, and I am now a fan. Not sure if i'd make a point to eat there over other options in the area given the price, but if invited back I would happily dine there again.

Now that I've "broken the seal" so to speak, I will probably return to the bar which has a lot of seating and looks like it could be a lot of fun. Lots of beers to choose from, of course. I wouldn't mind checking out their happy hour specials. I loved the atmosphere and found it a very comfortable experience.

If you like a pint or two of beer this is the place for you. There is a wide variety of beer from local micro brews to obscure out of state and out of country brews. They also regularly change some of their beers every week so there is always some new brew to try. In the downtown location every Friday night they have Blues and brews - which is free live music after work to get the weekend started. There are also various different styles of live music -at reasonable rates. The food is what one would expect to find at a micro brew pub or the like - although the menu isn't very imaginative, they pull off all the staples very good. It is a great place to grab some great beer, or ale, or stout or.. some good food and live music... great place and good energy and all around fun place in the downtown area

Over a year after my last review this place still is one of the absolute most god awful restaurants in Richmond.  A group of us dined here last night so we could catch the Dirty Dozen Brass Band show (which I'll come back to).  After the bartender snarked at me for ordering an Iced Tea instead of a beer I realized we were going to have a bad night.  When he slammed the tea down on the bar and trotted off I wanted to remind him that people still tip on tea, and that being rude to industry people is the fastest way to get snuffed.  What a prick.

For dinner I ordered the "Cuban" which wasn't at all a Cuban. It claims it's on traditional bread but it's not. I'm from Tampa, I'm 100% positive that Brioche style bread you are claiming is traditional Cuban bread (aka lard bread) is far from the fact.  It was WAYYYYYY TO DENSE to be the typical thin pressed, fluffy interior, crunchy exterior bread that we Floridians pride ourselves in.  It was also missing the mayo/mustard spread.  Terrible sandwich.

As for the show though... The 7 guys that showed up certainly put on a great show but what about the other 5 band members?  Why didn't Cap Ale tell patrons that it was only half the band performing instead of 5 original guys and 2 fill in kids?  Don't get me wrong they were awesome but seriously WTH guys?  If I pay to go see Matt & Kim and only Matt shows up I'm going to be upset.  Advertise your shows for what they are!

Anyways this place sucks in all aspects. I'm glad that there are other ale houses opening around town.

This place was pretty gross and unwelcoming.

I went here after work with some coworkers-- we were seated immediately in one of the most uncomfortable booths I've ever been in. The back reclines awkwardly and the seat has no padding. It's definitely not the kind of place that feels welcoming.

Every beer we ordered was out. The waitress was ditzy and slow. We ordered a big pretzel and that was OK, but after finishing what beer we actually could order, we left. No one wanted to be there any longer. I'm kinda surprised they're still in business. They need a big time clean up and some more personable staff.

I used to like this place. i don't go here for beer, just the dollar burgers on Monday. but the past few times I've been here, they just keep skimping down on their burgers. I've always ordered their southwest, but they took that off the Monday dollar menu. and now they barely give any toppings, not much lettuce, not much tomatoes. its better to go to Carytown on Tuesday for their half off burgers.

Great beer selection, upstairs and downstairs bar.  Didn't have any food personally, but the drunk lady next to me said she liked a lot of things on the menu.

Catchy live music the night I went in, but I'd personally only come here for a drink.  The bar has a really cool "coaster" which lines across the full bar upstairs... it's a glass/beer mug cooler!  I was a bartender for years and haven't seen anything like this; cool concept.

Small beer is 12 oz, large is 22 oz I believe.  Bartender was great at communicating when she'd be with you since she was a bit tied up, and that is always comforting.

My hubby loves coming here for the huge beer selection... and I'd usually give this place four stars, but our last trip was so disappointing.
On a recent Saturday night, we had to leave after one drink (which is blasphemy -- we live two hours away, so coming here is a big treat for the hubby and he usually orders a few drinks and a growler to-go).
I think the lines/taps need a cleaning or something, because both of our drinks tasted like metal. Hubby got a seasonal drink that he'd never had, so we weren't sure how it was supposed to taste, but I stuck to my old tried-and-true favorite, the lindemans framboise, which ALSO tasted like metal... and I KNOW that drink is not supposed to have an aftertaste like you've eaten pennies.
The place was dead... which was weird for a Saturday night... so maybe other people had this problem too?

Why this place gets 4 stars:

service is always fantastic. they treat you well... pay for quality & thats what you get in return.

beer selection is awesomeeeeee...sometimes pricey but they have exotic stuff!

food-  not run of the mill american food......but good recipes and some unique pairings.  yes its pricier.

FRITES (which are fries that come with 4 different amazing sauces....I come here just for the fries sometimes.)

If I could give a more precise star rating I would give it 3.5 stars ...because this one in richmond is not as good as the one in fredericksburg!

Had a great date with my wife here on Friday and enjoyed the blues music and the wine.  The wine list was not as extensive as I would have liked but the beer list did make up for it. I had a glass of the Orin Swift - The Prisoner and my wife a glass of the White Hall Viognier. We split two pounds of the Prince Edward mussels and the only reason I gave this place a 4 star rating was the temperature of the dish. Never the less we will be back for the music!

Great beer selection - if I was rating on beer alone I would give five stars.  But the food was just okay.  We had calamari (both regular and buffalo), cheese dip and pierogies.  The food was good, but it took a long time to come out and it was not hot. But did I mention how great the beer selection was?

Beer is always good of course, but I was disappointed with the speed of service and food quality.  Ordered the stuffed pretzel sandwich (which I frequently order in my home location - Harrisonburg) and it was just nowhere near as delicious as what I'm accustomed to in Hburg.  No one else in the place at the time appeared to be ordering food, yet we waited nearly and hour for our entrees to arrive.  And we didn't even get offered beer refills as frequently as we would've liked.  I expected more from the original Cap. Ale House since this location has always delivered for me in the past.

Amazing beer selection, tasty food - but pretty standard fare for a higher than average price.

Good to note they serve their full menu until 1am an have several bars and rooms (which includes a concert venue and a patio downstairs).

Great for beer...not so much for your wallet.

If you love to try new things in the beer relm...this is your bar!  They have an incredible selection of beers from all over.  I Yelp in what is arguably the most prolific micro brew producing parts of San Diego and I was floored by the sheer number of choices.  I loved the fact that they touted their SD brews to my wife and I with a real sense of pride.  They genuinely feel that they have something special there.  We turned them down of course and had to explain the fact that we are from the SD area to keep the Bar tender from having us kicked out...lol!  I wish I could extol about the food but the fact is, we went in for brews and we got our fill!  Had beers from enough places to forget what we had...sad I know, but we had a great time...I think.  Good thing the bar was stumbling distance from our hotel!

Now the best part...the ICE BAR!!  The bar has an ice strip that runs down the center to keep your chosen brew nice and chilly.  Its a cool gimmick, a conversation starter and a great place to rest your glass and give it a spin.  Entertaining and useful!

All in all, a great bar that has live music, daily drink specials and a really cool bar.  If we lived in VA I would certainly be a regular!

If pricing was the deciding factor this would be a 5 star review.  My co-workers and I headed out for a bite and once they found out I was a yelper they left that chore in my more than capable hands.

I did not let them down.  Monday night was like winning the lottery here if you like drinks and burgers.  Buy a drink, get a burger for $2.  You read that right...$2!!  The savings don't stop there if you get there before 7pm.  Get there before 7pm and get half off your drinks!  So for $4.25 I got a Bells Two Hearted and burger.  Come on! Outstanding!

Service was great and the location was crowded with a very energetic and cool vibe.  This will be a staple for me as I have to visit Richmond more often.

Sunday night, late-ish - don't bother sitting at the bar - unless you're looking for self-service.

there was a band playing in the music venue, which was crowded, but the main bar was mostly empty - of course the bar tender was too busy to possibly check on our party at all.

i literally had to get up, walk the length of the bar to ask someone for a second beer - service was extremely poor.

    beer selection is excellent.
food is usually good - go for lunch.

Like everyone has said, great drink selection and great bar-staff.

Had I gone there only to drink, I'd give it 5-stars.  But no, I ate there.  The food didn't taste bad, BUT it took forever to come out and was cold when it did.  The service by my waitress wasn't good either.  I want to blame this on the large group we had, but either way the service stunk and the food was disappointing.

Good place to drink, but not to eat.  Especially with a large group.

5-stars for the bar. 1-star for the food/waitress.

Capital Ale House was the highlight of my trip to Richmond, at least food wise.  We'd heard about the frozen bar from the friends we were visiting, and we decided that it would make the pickier folks in our group happy.

There's free parking in the deck around the corner.  As we walked in, I saw the 100 mile fish special on the chalkboard menu out front.  Right then, I decided that I would be having the soft shell crab BLT with ancho chili sauce.  We were at the bar barely long enough to decide what we wanted when we were seated at the front with the windows open to the street.

I tried to Peach Lambosa to start.  It's a decent enough concept, peach lambic mixed with sparkling wine - but it was too sweet for my taste.  The table got the rauchbier cheese dip to start.  What's not to love about beer cheese dip?  Only the calories...

The side salad with orange chive dressing was great - fresh crispy greens with the tang of house-made dressing.  But all I really cared about was the sandwich.  They even toasted the bun, as I'd requested (didn't want the sauce or the tomato to make the bread soggy around the crab).  It was all I could have hoped for - nice and crisp crab, fresh lettuce and tomato, just the right amount of sauce to give spice and flavor without making the crab or bun soggy.  YUM.

The table also split the apple pie with ice cream.  I only had one bite since I was trying to savor the sandwich flavor, and I think it was pretty good.

One of the best things of the night was the service.  Our server was so friendly and helpful, taking our special requests and patiently waiting while we talked and asked questions instead of focusing on the order.  Always smiling as she brought dishes and removed dishes.

Really great atmosphere and sandwich.  Wish I could get that where I'm from!

What a great find, a wide selection of beer and professional staff who know the beer in the heart of Richmond.

As a DC area native I am spoiled with almost too many bars that have a wide selection of beers, but I am always glad to find one on my travels. I was in Richmond for an Army event and after doing my Yelp due diligence (after having learned my lesson of not doing so not too long ago), we settled on this place. And I was quite happy, the staff knew their beer, the pretzel we had was pretty good and the beer selection was good (I would say great but they apparently recently kicked the keg of a few of the beers I wanted to try).

I liked the refrigerated strip running through the bar, it was a neat little quirk (not sure how well it works, but it is neat).

After months of driving by and reading reviews, we finally decided to check this place out. It was a Friday around 6pm and it was pretty packed but we got a table right away.

The beer menu is bigger than the food menu and the server knew his beers! He suggested a beer I have never heard of, cuz they ran out of the beer that I have heard of and like! One thing tho, the beer was not as cold as I would have liked. I can't enjoy a room temp beer... that's just wrong! It needs to be north pole cold for me along with a frosted glass/mug. One appetizer that we really really really enjoyed were the wings. Man, I was surprised they were so good considering everything else we ordered didn't impress me. They are a lil spicy so watch out!

I was disappointed with the food, however, we only ordered apps..... maybe the entrees are better? I will most likely stop by this place again to try out the entrees and to explore the other fun and games it has to offer!

They hooked me with their Tuesday night special: "Steal the Pint." They have a different beer on tap every week and give it to you in the brewery's glass, which you get to keep. And yup, you keep as many glasses as you drink! Other than that, they have a RIDICULOUS beer menu. As for the food, I've had most things. Burgers are really good, white chicken chili is fabulous. I Haven't done many entrees there as I usually save room for beer, but the few I have had were pretty good (not the best ever, but definitely not bad).

    A favorite for sure.

wanted to like this place....tried twice and both times very unhappy. We started with Perogies and Chicken wings and both were good.. The beer selection is also a selling point and 3 in our party of 6 were very happy with the selection and the waiters recomendations. But 5 of us hated our entrees. I ordered the Prime rib, as did my wife and son-in-law and all were cold and over salted.
I gave it 2 stars instead 1 because the desserts were very good and the coffee was better than most coffee shops.

Did you know Capital Ale house has over 162,000 beers on it's menu? That's not exactly accurate, but it may as well be. The Brickskeller in DC is the only place I been where they had more beers, but Capital Ale scores over the cave-like DC institution in three important ways:

    1. They _know_ all 300 beers they have really well and how to point you to a brew or a style you'll enjoy

    2. They have some really fine food. It ain't cheap, but it's refined, prepared well, and often interesting

    3. They are 100 miles closer than the Brickskeller

    4. You don't have to endure the traffic and people in DC to have a great beer experience

    Yes, you're right... I can't count.

51 taps, 200+ kinds of bottled beer.  BOOM!

If their food could match up to the INCREDIBLE beer selection, they'd probably rank 4.5 stars for me but that's just not the case and never has.  Well, let's just say the food is good, just WAY overpriced esp. considering the prices of their beers.

Overall, I love the environment of Cap Ale and the ice rail on the bar to keep your Delirium or Two Hearted, extra chill'd.  The attached music hall is ideal for afterwork gatherings or any social occasion.  Cap Ale constantly hosts some of the best in blues, rock, jazz, and funk that "really ties the room together" .  There's TONS of room downstairs too w/ a gaming area that leads to the outside patio which is one of my favorite summer spots, particularly on Fridays before the Cheer's series @ Brown's Island.

$1 Burger night and "Steal Your Glass" night are great ways to lure you in, just be careful not to fall for the extremely overpriced side items like FRIES or the $6+ beer choices.  What was meant to be a "cheap night out" can easily turn into a $40-50 outing when all is said and done.

It's not often that I can say I've eaten at both chains of a local chain. Capital Ale House in the burbs was my first beer of my Richmond visit and the downtown location was one of the last. I came downtown for a local publication's music event and got exactly what I expected out of their pub fare menu. Unfortunately the Reuben sandwich I ordered only came with three pieces of bread. One sandwich was open face yet upside down. I guess the bottom slice was left in the kitchen or something. Enter knife and fork.

Aside from that, just like the location out in the burbs they have decent beers, slow service and pub food. I guess you just know what you're going to get here just like you would at a Denny's or McDonald's. Getting there is easy, it's just on you to decide if it's what you want to eat.
