Fried greasy everything forget your health, Fresh flounder thou. will not try it again. Lack of attention to customers, could be a little more friendly.

Really great food. The staff was really friendly and offered tips about local stuff. We had the fish tacos and crab quesadilla and streamed clams. We already have plans to go back again before the end of the week! (They also had some tailgating type games for while you wait).

It doesn't seem like there are many dining choices on Chincoteague. The crab cakes were recommended so I tried that - it was ok. The portions are small. My daughter really liked the fried shrimp. My husband had the flounder and it was ok. It is a takeout but they do have a few tables outside. The wait is long. It seemed popular, maybe would order something different next time?

Eh, I thought this place was OK. We went on a fairly busy evening, waited a long time (1hr+) for our food and when it did arrive our order was wrong. However, the food was decent and we sat outside and enjoyed it. We didn't bother to return during our trip there, but probably will the next time we are there.

Three and a half star food. One star for the attitude. Over-cooked fried shrimp and fish, fish had bones in it. The shrimp roll was really good, good clam strips and nice crab cake. Good dense little hush puppies.

The picnic tables are cool for eating your food hot and fresh, which I recommend for fried stuff as it doesn't seem to travel that well. Games outside and the begging cat are a fun diversion while you wait for your food.

I ordered the platter (everything) and asked to substitute drum for flounder. The lady taking orders said "Let me ask" and went over to ask the Deliverance-looking cooks who gave gave me dirty looks like I would dare to even ask and said "No". Seriously? It's the same price in your cold case and it ain't that hard to swap a couple of pieces of freakin' fish, what's the deal?

After watching them cook I realized the deal. Everything is pre-prepared and pre-portioned (cleaned, weighed out and floured) and then stored in their massive bank of fridges until ordered. Only then it is taken out and thrown in steamer/fryer. I guess it's just too difficult for them to substitute. We probably won't come back.

The crabcake sandwich was DELICIOUS. Definitely get it since that's what they're known for. The hushpuppies were also good, but I wish I got more!

I like the outdoor seating and game area, very fun atmosphere. I would definitely go here again to grab some take-out seafood.

Their specialty was the crab cake sandwich so we ordered it. They boasted 100% crab meat, no fillers. It was basic but delicious.  We asked for recommendations on another popular dish. They recommended the fish tacos. They were ok, not great. Cheese on a fish taco is a bit weird for me.

We also ordered a dozen fresh oysters. They weren't shucked properly (oyster still attached to the half shell).

The corn on the cob was average.

Each order can with a bag of chips, hush puppies and a pickle. The hush puppies were not bad.

This is a great place for takeout to eat at the beach. Stick with the crab cake sandwich.

Don't know who left all the good reviews but this is a NO. We shouldnt have even ate after we watched cross contamination happen more then once. Out of 3 orders none were good. Fish tacos served on flour tortilla with cheese was a weird and not good.  Clam fritter sandwich made me sick and it was soooo naaasttyy. Husband had cod sandwich and ehhhh it was edible. No flavor to anything. Also had fried oysters...again no flavor. Wish I could agree with other reviewers...

My boyfriend and I stopped in here on our way from the beach to go catch the sandbar shuttle back in August, and I cannot stop thinking about the crab cakes I got at Captain Zack's!

It must have been an off-time, because the place was not too busy. We entertained ourselves by playing the games outside (bean bag toss, blongo ball) while we waited for our food.

Everything looked so good, it was hard to decide what to order, but I had been craving crab cakes, so I ordered the mini crab cake appetizer (eight of them for $8.95) with a side of cole slaw, and my boyfriend got the blackened scallop burger. The crab cakes were delicious and not greasy at all, despite being fried. The cole slaw was a perfect complement on a hot summer day, and the scallop burger was really flavorful.

As a little bonus, they had a really cute tabby cat sleeping outside the door under a bench.

Excellent place -- would definitely go back!

Delicious food! It's take out only, so be sure to have a place to sit and enjoy (preferably inside, away from the mosquitoes!). The lines are out the door. My suggestion: Order you dinner, head to Island Creamery to pick of a pint of dessert, go back to Zack's to get your dinner, then head to a quiet spot to enjoy.
BTW, they accept credit cards, but the machine was down when we were there. It caused a bit of a problem.

The very best carry out seafood restaurant on the island.  The seafood is always very fresh with very large portions. The staff is also very friendly and I highly recommend Capt.  Zach's.

Everything here is take out, made to order, fresher than fresh and a real taste of chincotegue's best seafood. Plain and simple, the way it is supposed to be.

Fresh, friendly - no gimmicks, just made-to-order seafood. For lunch one day, we ordered a fried oyster sandwich and fried shrimp platter. Ten minutes later our styrofoam to go containers were stuffed and ready to go.

The fried shrimp platter came with a pile of hand cut fries AND hush puppies. The sandwich came with chips, a pickle, and hush puppies. Way too much food - but everything was fresh and delicious. We ate on one of the picnic benches parked out front.

We went back again for dinner another night and the wait was a lot longer - there were a dozen or so people waiting for their meals. The four or so people working the kitchen--which is in full view behind the checkout counter--looked a little frantic. After a longish wait in the steamy kitchen, we finally got our food. We indulged in fried oysters and a fried piece of flounder. (They have a display case full of fresh fish that you can order fried, blackened or grilled.) We also had really good steamed broccoli, corn on the cob, and cole slaw on the side.

This place is not cheap relative to the surroundings-I was a little surprised that most of the platters were around $20. Ordering by the pound - as another reviewer suggests below - is a good way to bring the price down. No one needs to eat all of the fries that come with the platters, anyway!

A surprisingly great food option on Chincoteague. Don't expect much in the line of niceties; there's no room to eat inside, but they do their best with the tables outside to have some games and a beachy ambiance.

We ordered the crab cake sandwich, Fried.  It was 10 bucks and came with hush puppies and pickles and chips.  For our money Woody's probably makes a better crab cake, but this is definitely good and doable (and the side of Woody's that serves crab cakes isn't open before Memorial Day).

Anxious to try the rest of the menu. They have 5 different options of clams alone!  Name your seafood and they have it on the menu at Captain Zack's.

The only bad thing about this place was that we couldn't eat inside. Besides that, we ate here more than several times on our vacation for several reasons:

    1. The people are helpful and genuine. They will also bring your order out to you while you wait outside at the picnic tables or in your car.

    2. The menu is diverse and there are daily specials.

    3. The orders come with generous sides. My mother ordered fried clams which came with corn and fries plus complimentary condiments she didn't have to ask for like tarter sauce and ketchup. I ordered the special, crab quesadillas, and they came with chips and a fantastic pickle, plus hush puppies and a red pepper jelly dip which was an added bonus/surprise.

    4. You can buy fresh seafood too, in case you want to make your own dinner later.

    5. There's a soda machine outside with cheap bottle drinks.

I would also have to note that I ordered oysters on the half shell and they were less clean than I would have liked, but maybe that is normal to people who live by the sea.

After we placed our dinner order at Captain Zack's counter, I stood and watched one of the chefs make each of the crab balls my daughter had ordered. She pulled just the right amount of seasoned crab and filler out of a pan and hand-made each ball. She then placed each ball on the skillet, where she pressed them slightly with a spatula and then flipped them at just the right time so they were slightly brown on each side. Ask yourself: how many eating establishments do you think devote this much care (dare I say love?) to an item from the kid's menu!

This devotion to making quality seafood is what makes Captain Zack's worth a visit. There is a picture on the wall of one of the owners kneeling in the back of a pick-up truck with her catch of the day -- about 20+ red snapper, if I recall. I got the sense that the owner was an accomplished fisherwoman who made some mean fish dishes, and decided to open her own place because she considered the other offerings in Chincoteague to be lacking.

The "blackened" crab cakes I ordered were delicious. These cakes weren't a few pieces of jumbo meat with lots of filler. Instead, the cake was nearly solid crab meat  tossed with a homemade spice mix. The crabcakes came with fries and hushpuppies, which seem to be the standard sides in Chincoteague. These sides gave the dish a bit too much of a fried taste for me. Still, the fries had good flavor and the hushpuppies, though not the best we had in Chincoteague, were good. But it's the crabcakes that make Captain Zack's a place not to miss on your trip to Chincoteague.

Meh - I've had better seafood. To start, we had a half dozen of their oysters and it was pretty lacking. They didn't even give us a lemon for the oysters! There wasn't much oysters and it was actually a bit sandy. My girlfriend got the fish taco's and I got the flounder (I think). My girlfriend thought the fish was fried for too long (or maybe the oil was just not fresh) and didn't really enjoy it too much. I thought it was alright - but it didn't wow me. As for my fish sandwich, they give you a whole filet and you either have to fold it in half to fit the bun, or just hack away about a half of it and eat it separately. There were a few fish bones in there - none that you can't get out if you're careful but the fish was a bit bland. The food was just lacking to me and for the price, I guess I was expecting a bit more. There weren't even that many people and it took awhile for us to get our food because I guess it was just the Capt'n in the back cooking with a younger kid just taking orders. I feel the other reviews are overrated, but to each their own. I guess if you like just fried seafood - then this may satisfy your needs.

I had the single fried oysters platter and it was yummy!  The carry-out box was so packed with oysters, fries, huspuppies, and corn that it wouldn't close!  Both a great value and oustanding tasting food.  You are going to get fresh local seafood.  The only negative I can say is do not get there too late ....  Much like the rest of the island, this is not a late night dining option.  I would say definitely before 7:00 PM to be safe.  If you get there too late they may be backed up with all the tremendous amount of orders they get for dinner each day.

I had the fried clams -- correction -- the BEST fried clams I've ever had!  They start with fresh clams in their shells, shuck them, then toss them in a seasoned flour (I believe there was a little cornmeal with the flour).  The clams are then deep fried and served.  Wow, what a difference the fresh clams make!  The resulting coating was quite light -- I tasted the clams.

(Captains has two types of fried clams on the menu -- strips and what I had.  I didn't try the strips, but I can't imagine they'd be as good as the freshly shucked clams I had.)

This place has the best crabcakes in the world. My husband asked me to plan a trip here just so he could have this crabcake again. So worth the drive from Northern Virginia. It is pure crab, and large pieces of crab at that. You can get one in a sandwich, or get two in a platter and share.  They make them grilled, fried or blackened. If you don't like pepper that much, don't get it blackened.
They also make great corn nuggets. Imagine sweet corn battered and fried while still retaining its moistness. So yum.
