I'm not into the big thick 10lb. burgers that seem to be popular around these parts. Let me just say, I'm what some of these yokels might call a "Yank"; it's about quality not quantity. This place has some serious appeal just from the looks of it- bunch of carnivores bumpin' elbows in a little, red airplane hangar for an old school diner cheese burger and a sloppy scoop of meat soup. Meat soup is the best description I can come up with for their totally original, delicious Chili, which I was advised by the enthusiastic regular next to me to add the homemade hot sauce to, along with the staple saltines. A complete stranger referred me there a few days prior for the Chili, for which I now know Casper's deserves a 5 star rating alone, but I descovered my new favorite local burger-joint in the process. ...There was something going on with a bowl of plain old fritos chips and the guy scrunched in next to me. I'm not sure what that was all about. I made a joke about how "this place is famous for its awesome fritos", but no one laughed, so maybe it actually is. I suppose I'll find out next time. The waiter way-talked me in to a big bowl of homemade, fresh-baked blackberry cobbler at the end of my meal, and he was way-right to do so as it was the proverbial "nail in the coffin" to my absolute zero-complaints meal. It came out to $12 with the cup of coffee and a fair tip (-+$4??). If you don't like the probability of a little wait or other eaters in close proximity - stay away. I got the feeling you're not welcome. Good job Springfield! I've found something besides bass-pro and o'rielies and 10 walmarts that you can consider unique to you. And you can definitely be proud of this.
Review Source:Caspers is a neat little place. Â Drawn to the place by other reviews. Â I had the Casperito. Â A tortilla filled with chili, cheese, sour cream lettuce and tomatoes. Â Very tasty. Â My coworker had a frito pie and a cheeseburger. Â The food was pretty good and the staff was great. Â Genuinely friendly, genuinely hippie. Â As we left, it looked like Jerry Garcia sweeping the floor! Â Check it out....it's a cool place.
Review Source:I've lived in Springfield for ages and never experienced this alleged Casper's...partly because it's only open during the winter months, partly because I figured it was just chili, and partly because they don't really advertise and it's not on the top of my mind when I pick somewhere to eat. However, I am officially de-virginized--in the words of Tommy, the fantastic waiter who was rocking a nice CLEAN white button up while slinging sloppy bowls of chili.
I have had better chili. Scorn me if you wish...but I have. Â I like my chili HOT and covered with peppers and onions and cheese and sour cream...hot enough to make my nose run. Caspers chili is very low-key. Tasty, don't get me wrong...Texas style, with no beans, and bowls so full that they run over into your saucer. It's just very basic, so even though I ordered it with cheese and onions, I kept squirting hot sauce in my bowl.
Since I was new to the Caspers experience, my dining buddy said I had to order a cheeseburger too, and that sealed the deal for me. Â The cheeseburger will be what I order every time from here on out, no questions asked. Â It reminds me of a steak & shake burger--irregularly shaped with crunchy edges, where you have twice as much burger as you do bun. It's AMAZING, and I am a burger snob. The bun is steamed or something, because it's warm and soft, and it comes with an entire thick slice of onion and some delicious secret pink sauce.
Get a small bowl of chili, and put a spoonful on each bite of cheeseburger for something amazing. They DO serve a chili cheeseburger, but word on the street is that it's open faced and needs to be eaten with a fork. I like to be able to hold my burgers. :)
The food is fast, the service is friendly and efficient, and it's cheap. Â Go check it out!
One of Springfield's best little spots. Been around for over 100 years for a reason. Some of the best chili I've ever had. Great food. Always great service. Is truly a gem. Just wish it was open all year. There's usually a line around the building at lunch time. Only open for lunch. I recommend the chili cheeseburgers, but just chili is always a good call.
Review Source:I discovered this prize while going to school at MSU and living literally in sight of this building (which is a tiny little airplane hanger). Unfortunately, I didn't discover it until about a month before I graduated.
First of all, let me brag on the food. It is delicious and cheap (keep in mind, college kid budget).
Next, and even more importantly the service is top notch. The guy (his name escapes me) met me the first day while I was with my roommate. We only said our names once but he called us by name as we left and said thank you, hope to see you again. But this is where it gets good... I was so impressed with the place that I went back the next day with my aunt and uncle. He comes up to the table and says, "Hey Grant, where's Chris today?" He didn't even have to think about it. Needless to say, after this I was on a chili only diet for the next month. I expect great customer service but this guy went way above expectations.
Go there, get a double whammy (with onions) and introduce yourself. You'll be hooked. Â And very very full.
This place is a hoot! Â Yep, it's a dive in an old hanger in downtown Springfield. Â They are not open in the summer months.
Old school burgers and chili that is the best I have ever had. Â It is uniquely smooth and makes me want to sing!
Bean soup is awesome, too! Â Do not miss this!
I kept hearing about this restaurant with "Great Chili" called Caspers. Â I just thought it was an Urban Legend.
I finally went downtown one afternoon with a friend from work for lunch & saw this small "building" Â I thought there was no way this was true.
Went in & sat up at the counter & ordered Cheeseburger with a side of Chili. Â WOW...the Chili came out quick with crackers & the burger soon followed. Â
It was FANTASTIC! Â The staff is really friendly & the food is BETTER than I thought. Â They are only opened from 10:30 am - 4:00 pm, Monday thru Friday. Â They open up just after Labor Day & Close the last week of May. Â No Summers, but I can guarantee you that I will be back MANY times!
Seriously you need to try it out.
